Tennis Anyone? Scottsdales Tennis History By Joan Fudala, community historian

While many consider Scottsdale a golf destination, it’s been a perfect spot for tennis, too. Here’s a serving of Scottsdale tennis history: Tennis was an easier sport to support in the early years of Salt River Valley settlement than golf was. Tennis courts required far less water to maintain than golf, and the sport was already popular with both men and women by the 1900s. Some of the earliest tennis courts in the valley were at the Phoenix Country Club, Tempe Normal School (now ASU) and the YMCA and YWCA. Scottsdale’s first two luxury resorts included tennis courts – the Ingleside Inn, which opened in 1910 (now in vicinity of the Arizona Country Club) and the Jokake Inn, which opened in 1928 (now on the grounds of The Phoenician). Scottsdale High School had a tennis team before World War II (and not a golf team until after the war). The former, private Judson School in Paradise Valley also had a competitive tennis team.

The Paradise Valley Racquet Club opened in 1956 on the northern slope of Camelback Mountain. It hosted national tennis events and the Phoenix Thunderbirds’ annual tennis Championships in which Alex Almedo, Lew Hoad and Pancho Gonzales were star players. In 1969 the resort became John Gardiner’s Tennis Ranch, site of the annual U.S. Senators’ Cup and other celebrity tournaments. Merv Griffin was honorary chair of the 1983 Senators’ Cup, with Eva Gabor celebrated as its ‘official cheerleader.’ In 2001 the historic property transformed into The Sanctuary on Camelback. In 1971 Alice and Bob Hing opened the Scottsdale Racquet Club on Indian Bend Road as a private tennis club. Most new resorts and master-planned communities offered tennis facilities. Actor Tom Poston was among the first celebrities to enjoy tennis at the newly-opened Scottsdale Conference Resort (now the Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch) in 1976. When the Silverman family redid their Paradise Valley Guest Ranch into the Granada Royale Resort on Scottsdale at Chaparral, they began hosting benefit tennis tournaments. The 1982 tourney supported Arizona Special Olympics. The Registry Resort hosted the Desert Wheelchair Classic in October 1982, a sanctioned National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis event. The resort continued to host many celebrity tennis events until it closed in the early 2000s. For example, the Bert Convy Celebrity Tournament held in 1983 benefitted the Spina Bifida Association.

Then-Scottsdale resident and tennis star Butch Walts hosted several tennis exhibitions in the 1980s at Scottsdale resorts, each benefitting his Butch Walts Urologic Cancer Research Foundation. Australian tennis greats Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall were the stars of a tennis exhibition to premiere the new grass courts at Desert Highlands in February 1986. Also, the ASU Sun Devil tennis team played the U of A Wildcat team at the exhibition. For several years in the late 1980s the Scottsdale Charros hosted WTC tennis championships in Scottsdale. John McEnroe won the singles final in 1986 at the Camelview Radisson Resort. Brad Gilbert won the 1987 event at the then-new Scottsdale Princess tennis stadium. Throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s the ATP held both men’s and women’s tournaments at the Scottsdale Princess, bringing in superstars like Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, Venus Williams, Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati.

The City of Scottsdale has two public tennis centers – at Scottsdale Ranch and Indian School parks – that offer lessons and league play.
