Scottsdale Land Dates Back 1.8 Billion Years By Joan Fudala, community historian

Scottsdale is a young city in a very old place. Geologists estimate that Scottsdale’s bedrock formed some 1.8 billion years ago when the first continental crust appeared. It’s no wonder, then, that residents, the city government, the tourism industry and businesses have been eager to protect and preserve as much of our land as possible. The city established the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in 1994; it now covers over 30,000-acres of mountains and Sonoran Desert land and provides our most scenic backdrop. Consider these bits of Scottsdale’s geologic history: In the early Precambrian Era, Arizona’s land was covered by ocean. Volcanic activity, mountain formation and sedimentation occurred. Schist and gneiss, the oldest rocks in Scottsdale, were formed during this time. Central Arizona’s sedimentary and volcanic rocks began to form during the Mesozoic Era, or between 200 and 70 million years ago, when tectonic (‘shifting plates’) and volcanic activity took place. The environment of this period would have supported amphibians and dinosaurs. Scottsdale’s current topography was produced during the Cenozoic Era, which began 70 million years ago. It is believed that during the Basin and Range Disturbance 10 to 15 million years ago that the Paradise Valley ‘dropped down,’ thus creating the McDowells as a separate mountain range.

Many millions of years ago, Scottsdale had two volcanoes, vestiges of which can be seen at either end of the McDowells: Brown’s Mountain to the north and Saddleback Mountain to the southeast. They are easily recognized by their distinctive black tops, which are comprised of basalt and tuff. The McDowells themselves contain several types of rock: Taliesin quartzite, metamorphosed rhyolite, dacite, metamorphosed quartz sandstone, quartz mica schist, basalt and granite. Chemical weathering of granite over millions of years has produced picturesque, boulder-strewn landmarks such as Pinnacle Peak and Troon Mountain. The Papago Buttes are the remains of a fault block which likely formed 15 to 20 million years ago. Rock shelters like Hole in the Rock near the Phoenix Zoo were formed when wind and water weathered feldspars and biotite. Camelback Mountain is also the eroded remains of a fault block that tilted many millions of years ago. The camel’s head and Echo Canyon have sedimentary clastic rock and cavernous weathering; the camel’s hump is Precambrian granite and schist.

Scottsdale’s soil has evolved from erosion and alluvial deposits. Over time, the combination of arid climate, seasonal rain and soil with a high level of calcium carbonate has produced caliche. This rock-hard substance that cements sand and gravel into a hard-tack subsurface layer has been a frustration to homeowners and builders alike, as it impedes water penetration, root growth and excavation. During the mid-1970s, the late Dr. Troy Pewe, then chair of the geology department at Arizona State University, along with several of his graduate students, was one of the first to intensely study the geology and topography of the McDowell Mountains. The study, funded by the City of Scottsdale, gave land planners data about potential development hazards in the area due to geologic conditions that ranged from washes that flood during rain storms to potential landslide areas. The highest point in Scottsdale is in the Continental Mountains at Scottsdale’s northern border: 4,789 feet above sea level. In 2007 the State of Arizona approved the naming of geographical features in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve: Drinkwater Peak, Bell Pass, Windgate Pass, Horseshoe Ridge, Toms Thumb (Tom’s Thumb variant), Gardeners Wall (Gardener’s Wall variant), Sven Slab, Morrells Wall (Morrell’s Wall variant), Mesquite Canyon and Ochoa Wash. Remember; as fascinating as rocks in the Preserve may be; it’s against the law to remove any rock, plant, animal or historic artifact from the Preserve. Photos are encouraged!
