When you are younger, you have life all We may never know how strong we really mapped out. “I would never (fill in the are until we are faced with a chance to test blank).” “When I (grow up, have kids, start it. With adversity comes opportunity. We a career) I’m going to do it this way.” The do not succeed in spite of our challenges, truth is we never know what we will do in we succeed because of them. It is in ada situation until we are versity that we find our faced with it. Life’s path humanity, form our charsometimes takes you acter, and discover our places you never thought own resiliency. Family...

Our parents, our children and our grandchildren: caring for the people we love.

Happiness is having a large, loving family... My sister used to have a magnet on her fridge. I cannot re-

member the exact words, but something like, “Happiness is having a large, loving family...in another state.” Hmm, come to think of it, I was the only member of her family who was living in a different state at the time… She and I have always been close. I’m SURE she was not talking about me! I later learned it was a variation on a famous George Burns quote, “Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.” Family, they have watched you grow, seen you through the good times and the bad times. They know how to lift you up and how to push your buttons. One cousin, in particular, takes great glee in reminding me that I am his “much older cousin”, by three whole days. That is ok. I get him back in different ways. Well, in truth, he is probably just getting me back from when we were younger.

For many, the definition of family has evolved over the years. Some friends can be closer than blood relatives. But, no matter who you call family, one thing is certain; we have a unique bond with our parents, siblings, children, cousins and other close relatives. Maybe it is because of shared experiences, maybe because they know the “real” us (whether they understand us or not) and give us a sense of belonging, or possibly because we know that no matter what happens, they are there for us. Whatever the reason, family is important. Many people will come and go throughout our lives, but family is always there. Even if a family member has passed, they remain in our memories, our traditions and sometimes in our reactions to the world around us.

Because family is “always there”, it can be easy to take members for granted, thinking they will “always be there.” But the truth is we never know how much time we have with them.

While researching my family’s history, one thing that struck me was that so many family members moved hundreds of miles away and probably never saw parents and siblings again. Their communication was limited to letters which probably took weeks or months to arrive. We are blessed today to have so many options to connect. Because family is “always there”, it can be easy to take members for granted, thinking they will “always be there.” But the truth is we never know how much time we have with them. No one ever says, “I wish I had that time I spent with my loved one back.” Instead, the common regret is that they did not spend enough time with that loved one. Take the time to let them know how much they mean to you, and build traditions and memories that will last long after you or they are gone. valleyvitalliving.com • 5

Kristy’s LITTLES BIGS

Family Photographs by Amanda Whitley Photography

&

By Ayla Green Community Senior Life

Kristy Bryant has always had a heart for caregiving. At her son Lawson’s doctor’s visit, the doctor asked him how many brothers and sisters he had. Lawson, putting hands on hips, asked, ‘Do you have all day?’ Kristy and her husband Greg have fostered twenty-eight children and adopted two sons, Lawson, age 8, and Grayson, age 4. In 2010, the Bryants took in their first foster children, Lawson’s siblings. They lived with them for about eight months before being reunited with their parents. When the mother became pregnant again, she knew the baby was meant for Kristy. Adoptive and first mom were very close during the pregnancy and birthing process. Kristy was there when Lawson was born and brought him home from the hospital. Both moms continue to share photos and stories. Transparency about the adoption journey and fostering is important to the Bryants. They explain that sometimes mommies and daddies have a hard time and they help them get back on the right track. Lawson’s adoption was handled by an attorney. Private adoption goes through a probate judge but still requires a home-study, background checks, and fingerprinting. When Grayson came along, Kristy and Greg had made the decision not to take in any more babies. But when the call came, they answered. “My mother had just passed away and Grayson was born on my wedding anniversary. It was a sign that this baby was meant to be with us. We had nothing prepared. Grayson came to us with the onesie he was wearing and a secondhand bottle. We picked him up and had to stop to buy everything we needed,” Kristy says. Born premature and substance-addicted, he was only 4-weeks old and remained in their foster care for 18 months before the official adoption. He was adopted through the foster care system; a significantly different process. The parents are still involved and home-studies and background checks are still conducted, but instead of just using a private attorney it is handled through the state court system and probate court along with the attorney. Most children in Alabama’s foster care system are reunited with biological family. About twenty percent become eligible for adoption1. In 2019 Kristy joined the team at The Madison Village, a not-forprofit organization specializing in senior care. Her duties as Community Development Director include placing seniors in their apartments or studios and social media and marketing content.

In both foster care where the role is parental and senior care where the role is more of an adult child or a grandchild, trust is required. “You have to have open communication and be willing to listen,” she says. “Stepping into that caregiver role, whether it’s as a mom or daughter means listening to the experiences they’ve had, understanding their current circumstances, be it opportunities or limitations, and hearing their wants and desires for the future.” Working in healthcare-related industries is not always easy. “Smile days” are her favorite. “The genuine, heartfelt, I want to live here days are the best part of my job. When my residents walk around the corner with a big smile on their face and I can capture that and send it to families…that is the best,” she explains. Caregiving is about relationships. Working with children leaves an impact on that child’s life forever. Senior care is creating relationships with the resident, their family and sponsors. Kristy has found with both, two things remain true: first, stability and routine are essential, and second, if you say you’re going to do something you better do it 15 minutes ahead of time. She says a schedule is crucial. Often when children come into the Bryant home, it’s their first stable environent. “Our home is by no stretch of the imagination perfect but some things we do know. We know we’ll bathe and brush our teeth every night and we’ll have dinner as a family. Some children have never had that type of structure before and knowing that certain things are going to happen every day they’re with us creates a sense of security.” Structure is also important in ensuring seniors feel secure. Helping seniors acclimate to a new living environment means getting to know their stories, fostering independence safely, and creating an environment where they feel welcome and wanted. It can be difficult when the children come and go but no matter how long they stay, they are always considered family. Kristy has a saying, “If I can love them for only but a time.” She adds, “When children leave or seniors need higher levels of care, sometimes families keep in touch and sometimes we sever ties. But no matter if it’s my home or The Madison Village, they always have a place they can call home.”

What’s the Difference Between Nursing Homes and Assisted Living? Senior living has come a LONG way over the last decade and among the senior living industry, there is a very distinct difference between assisted living and nursing care. By Ayla Green Community Senior Life

It’s very typical that families have little to no experience with either type so here’s a deeper look at the key differences: Choice vs. Necessity

The most significant difference between assisted living and nursing homes is that assisted living offers personal care in a home-like, social setting. Community Senior Life locations strive to maximize our residents’ quality of life and encourage independence when possible. Nursing homes provide personal, medical care in a clinical setting. Overall, there is a personal choice to move into a senior living community. Typically, entering a nursing home is a necessity usually following a significant medical event like a stroke or heart attack.

Levels of Care and Length of Stay

Both senior living communities and nursing homes offer different levels of care and services, however, the length of stay is varied case by case. Community Senior Life offers different levels of care including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite care. Assisted living and memory care communities offer services such as planned social activities, assistance with daily activities like grooming or dressing, and medication management. Nursing homes, in contrast, also known as skilled nursing, administer around-theclock care to more complex medical conditions usually tending to all or the majority of daily activities.

Active Lifestyle vs. Isolated Recovery

Senior communities are built to meet the needs of the senior consumer. The apartments and studios can be personally furnished and decorated, and every resident has a key to their own front door. Communities are vibrant areas with activities and events providing opportunities for new friendships and socialization while also giving peace of mind knowing that personal care, as well as housekeeping, dining, and maintenance, are all taken care of. Nursing home centers tend to be more institutional. Patients are more likely to be isolated or even share a room with others. Meals are served in rooms, as opposed to communal dining, to accommodate the patient’s recovery and there is limited social engagement.

Assisted Living Communities – A Safe Choice

The more families learn about the amenities and opportunities associated with senior living communities and the differences between assisted living facilities and nursing home centers the more we can de-stigmatize senior living and generate greater confidence in the safety of assisted living communities. Seasoned operators like Community Senior Life enact the highest health standards to protect their residents.

From a Distance...

Grandparenting From Afar A close relationship between grandparents and grandchildren can have a positive impact in both of their lives. You probably already understand how much a grandchild can mean to you. But the positive benefits are even greater for the child. Studies show that nine out of ten adults think that their grandparents influenced their values and beliefs. Building that strong bond can be a challenge when you are not able to see them often. But, as they say, where there is a will, there is a way.

Fun Ways to Build a Bond Long-Distance 1. Become Pen Pals: Purchase stationery or postcards, address them to yourself, add a stamp, and mail them to your grandchild. Set a schedule of how often you will write each other. Will it be monthly or an agreement to reply within a set period after receiving one? Ask their parents to remind them if needed. 2. Celebrate Half Birthdays: My son’s birthday was two days before Christmas. To make sure he had his own special day, away from all of the holiday celebrations, we held a “half” birthday party for him in the summer. How special would it be for you and your grandchild to have your own private celebration then or a month before their birth day? Send a gift for them to open while you are on the phone or video chat with them. Make it festive and decorate the room so they can see it in the background. You could even send them a matching party hat for you each to wear while you are talking. 3. Book of the Month Club: Pick a book for you both to read and talk about later. Send them something special for each book, like a handmade bookmark. 4. Scrap It: When you are able to spend time together, take dozens of pictures. Create a scrapbook and send it to them to remind them of all of the fun you had together. 5. Play Time: Play games when you are on the phone or video. Ex: I Spy, I’m Going on a Picnic, or Simon Says.

Transform Your Child’s Summer! Did you know that kids can actually lose math skills while school is out? Studies have shown that students can regress by up to two and a half months over the summer — a phenomenon known as “the summer slide.” At Mathnasium, we turn this around with Summer Workout Plans focusing on fractions, multiplication, algebra readiness, and more. We prevent the summer slide, give kids an edge for the next school year, and we make it fun! Teaching math is not just what we do, it’s all we do. Mathnasium is the authority in math education, with over 1,000 learning centers worldwide. Keep your child from sliding backward this summer.

Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing, Baby! Is Your Jewelry Box Filled with Genuine Turquoise or Imitations? By Susan Voiers ~ Owner & Designer, WV3 Designs Which would you rather have, if the price was close to the same, an original Louis Vuitton bag or a knockoff? Crazy question, right? But with gemstones, many people are walking around with imitations, thinking it is the real thing. Because of its popularity, turquoise is one of the most copied stones around. I’ve always had a fascination with turquoise. Maybe because of fond childhood memories of pieces my mother purchased on our travels out west. I would stand next to her at the counter of some small shop along the road, amazed at the beautiful and unique stones. Each had its own veining and color variations. A gentleman, visiting my table at an event, studied the trays filled with pendants. He looked at me and said, “It’s good to see someone who has real turquoise.” My first thought was, “What an amazing compliment.” My second thought was, “What a shame it needed to be said.” I have come across multiple stores, shops and vendors selling “turquoise”, who really were not. In their defense, they truly may not know. The piece may be labeled turquoise because of the color, but customers purchasing it may think they are buying a genuine turquoise stone. Some imitations, like glass and plastic, are easy to spot: The weight is “off’, it has an unnatural shine to it, etc. Others, made by dying a different stone to look like turquoise, are more difficult. Some “turquoise” is really powdered stone attached around a rock with epoxy.

Some tips to help you know if you have the “real thing”: Uniform Color Real turquoise normally has shade and hue variations. Dyed pieces will have a consistent color and may have streaks. Hot Needle Test Stones made of plastic or covered in epoxy will begin to melt or put off an odor. The Nail Test Run your fingernail along the cracks (veins) of the stone. Real turquoise will have ridges, even if they are very slight. Fake will normally be smooth. I See Spots Dyed stones, naturally, start as a different color, normally white. Howlite and magnesite are the two main stones used to create imitations. Look at the stone or at the hole drilled into the stone, through a magnifying glass. Are there flecks of white or tan? That is the original stone color where it did not take the dye. Unpolish It Wipe the stone with acetone (nail polish remover). If the appearance has changed, it has been dyed or treated. You Get What You Pay For Price is not always a telling factor, but can be. Because of my love of natural stones, I work hard to source genuine stones at amazing prices so everyone can enjoy them. Not everyone is able to do that. Genuine turquoise will normally be more expensive than imitations, but still affordable. Make sure you buy from someone you trust. INSTANT G I grew up next door to my grandparents. In the country, the term “next door” means something completely different than in the city. Even though they were in the next house, there were several hundred feet between us. One of my biggest memories of those days is of the garden that stretched from our house to theirs. Every weekend, the whole family gathered at their home. Days were filled with playing tag football with cousins, riding horses, building forts in the woods and making mimosa pies (No resemblance to mimosas. This version consisted of actual mimosa leaves and water, a much less messy version of mud pies). But, no matter how young you were, you were expected to help in the garden: planting and weeding, then shucking corn and shelling peas at harvest time. Looking back, I think my younger cousins and I probably only helped long enough to say we had been there, then left to find some new adventure. My grandmother was an amazing cook. With all of those fresh vegetables, thirteen kids and dozens of grandchildren, she had plenty of practice. One thing I was always fascinated with, and had a healthy respect for, was the pressure cooker.

When I first heard about the much updated version, Instant Pot, I knew I wanted one, that it would cook food faster and seal in flavor, but I had no idea what to do with it. After I finally purchased one, I tried a couple of recipes. They came out amazing. But mostly, it sat empty on my counter. Over the last few months, it has become my new best friend. While you may think of it as an electric pressure cooker, it is actually multi-functional and programmable. You can use it to sauté, brown, slow cook, as a rice cooker and more, saving space and time. There are many different brands of electric pressure cookers. Even though Instant Pot is a brand name, it has become the “name” of multi-cookers just as all tissues became “Kleenex.”

Cabbage Roll Soup If you love cabbage rolls, but hate the time involved, this will be your new favorite recipe. It has all of the flavor, without the work. Although called a soup, it has more of a stew consistency and can be enjoyed in any season. Serve over rice (or on the side), or with cornbread or rolls. 2 tsp olive oil 1 lb lean ground beef 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups cabbage, chopped 2-3 carrots, sliced 1 - 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (undrained) ½ cup cooked brown rice 2-3 tbsp brown sugar (to taste) 4 cups beef broth* 2 tbsp parsley 1 bay leaf (optional)

1. Turn on Instant Pot to sauté setting. Sauté ground beef, onions and garlic in oil until beef is brown and onions are translucent. Drain and return to pot. 2. Add all other ingredients to pot. Place lid and set pressure valve. Cook on high pressure cooker setting for 15 minutes. Carefully open the quick release valve and take off lid after depressurized. (If carrots and cab- bage are not cooked to desired tenderness, replace lid and set pressure cooker for an additional 5 minutes.) *4 cups water and 4 beef bouillon cubes may be substituted for beef broth.

GOODNESS Whole Chicken and Gravy

Perfect Brown Rice

1 whole chicken (around 4 pounds)* 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 5 cloves garlic, sliced 2 tsp tomato paste 2 tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper 1 cup chicken stock 2 tbsp cornstarch

2 cups brown rice 2 cups water* Salt to taste**

1. Add one tablespoon oil to cooker inner pot and turn on to sauté setting. Sear chicken on all sides until lightly browned (3-5 minutes on each side). Transfer chicken to plate. 2. Add remaining tablespoon of oil to pot and sauté onions and garlic until softened. Stir in tomato paste. Cook one minute. 3. Turn off sauté function. Pour in chicken stock, salt and pepper. Add steamer insert and place chicken on top. Apply lid and set pressure valve. Cook on high pressure setting for 20 minutes. Release pressure. Test chicken to ensure internal temperature is at least 165 degrees. If not, cook at addition- al 5-10 minute increments to desired temperature. 4. Remove chicken and insert and turn back on to sauté setting. Cover chicken with foil to keep warm. Add cornstarch and cook until gravy is thickened, stirring occasionally. 5. Optional: Place chicken in oven for 5 minutes to brown while gravy is thickening. 6. Serve over rice, potatoes or noodles. *May substitute chicken pieces for whole chicken.

1. Pour rice and water directly into the inner pot. Attach lid and adjust pressure valve. Cook on high for 20 minutes. 2. When timer sounds, allow to naturally release for 10 min- utes. Check to see if the pressure valve has gone down, if not, open pressure valve to finish depressurizing. Open lid and fluff with a fork. Add salt and other seasonings to taste. Since there is no evaporation in the Instant Pot, less water is needed to cook rice. You can adjust the recipe as long as you use a 1:1 ratio of water to rice. Never fill pot more than one half full. For 6qt pot, use at least 1 cup of rice, for 8qt pot, use at least 1.5 cups. Cook ahead of time as an easy side for multiple meals. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to four days or freeze for up to four months. *Stock may be substituted for water. **Season to taste before or after cooking.

Easy Rice Pudding 1. Cook rice as in the above recipe without seasoning. 2. Once rice is done, add butter, almond milk, salt, vanilla and honey to taste. 3. Top with cinnamon, raisins or fruit.

• • •

Instant Pot Tips Recipes were tested using a 6 quart Instant Pot. Check the instructions for your brand for any adjustments needed. Never open a multi-cooker until it has depressurized. Be sure to turn off cooker when depressurizing. If not, it will keep building pressure after you have released the valve. Most brands call for at least one cup of liquid in a recipe to ensure it can build to pressure adequately.

Experiment with your cooker and drop us a comment in our Facebook group, facebook.com/groups/valleyvitalliving with your favorite recipe.

Finance... Looking out for everything we have worked so hard for.

e f i L a g n i v Ha Go From r a Living to Working fo

I recently re-watched an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. The one where a visiting preacher asked everyone what their hurry was. In an effort to slow down and enjoy a lazy afternoon band

concert, they all took on extra responsibilities to make it happen. When the preacher passed back through, he found them all resting on Andy’s porch. He was impressed that they had taken his sermon seriously and were spending their time relaxing. Little did he know that they were all exhausted from the hard work they had been doing all day. We do that to ourselves sometimes. We take on extra responsibilities, sometimes without even realizing it. Some come in the form of bills, thinking it will make life easier or more enjoyable. But maybe life would be easier to enjoy without the worry of how we are going to pay for everything if a setback hits. What if by making just a few tweaks we were able to reduce our bills and put that money towards something that would really make life more enjoyable? Do you want to travel more, retire earlier, or have your eye on something you have always wanted, but just have not had the extra money? Try some of these ideas and see how quickly you go from working for a living to having a life.

Create a Budget

• Divide expenses into three categories: 1) monthly; 2) annual; and 3) non-essential. • List expenses for the entire year including seasonal expenses. For gifts, vacation, etc. decide if you want to include some in each month’s budget for them or a lump sum in the months they come up. • Look at variable expenses like groceries and entertainment. Set a limit on the things you have control over. • Remember, no matter how well you plan, life happens. Include an emergency fund in your budget.

Now that you know your total expenses, hopefully, they are a lot less than your annual income. If not, you may want to consider some of these money saving tips. Entertainment • Cut the Cable: Antennas pick up dozens of channels in most areas. Services like Prime, YouTube, and Neflix offer hundreds of movies and documentaries. For a small additional fee, you can add regular channels and watch current shows through them. • Movies and Concerts in the Park: Most cities offer free concerts and/or movies. Some venues also have free concerts. Food • Discounts: Most restaurants offer senior, military and other discounts. • Coupons: Use digital or clipped coupons to try out new venues. • Price Match: Many stores will match a competitor’s sales price. You just have to show the ad. • Gardening: If space is limited, consider a container garden or a grow tower. • Freeze Meals: Cook larger portions and freeze for ready-made meals. You will be less apt to impulse buy and will cook meals that stretch.

Home • Heating/Cooling Check-Up: A clean system uses less power. • Purge: If you do not love it, lose it. Sell unneeded items on Facebook, Ebay or hold a yard sale. • Appliances: Unplug anything you are not using. Even computer cords pull electricity when plugged in and not being used. • DIY: See if you can handle a small repair yourself. YouTube has hundreds of how-to videos. • Seals: Check seals around windows and doors to keep heat/air from escaping and outside air from coming in. Miscellaneous • Receipts: Always check receipts for errors. Sale prices are not always adjusted in the store’s system. • Checking/Credit Card: Always monitor statements to ensure withdrawals are correct and warranted. valleyvitalliving.com • 13

Life Stages & Legal Stages

Addressing Your Legal Needs at Every Stage of Life

Throughout life there are many times where having access to legal guidance is a great help. Whether it is a positive event (marriage, birth of a child) or a negative occurrence (speeding ticket, car accident, divorce) a lawyer can help with a positive outcome. Life Stage: Getting Married Getting married should be one of the best, most beautiful events, but it is also a legally binding contract. Even when planning a wedding it can involve many contracts, also legally binding. Top Legal Needs Associated with Marriage: Prenuptial Agreement; Name Change; Will Preparation; Child Custody/Child Support Life Stage: Financial Decision Purchasing a home can be the biggest financial decision of your life, having lasting consequences. So, having the advice of an attorney to help you with consultation, contract review, and calls/letters on your behalf just makes sense. The same applies to buying or renting other assets such as cars, boats, and vacation homes. Top Legal Needs Associated with Financial Decisions: General Legal Consultation, General Contract Review, Prepare Purchase/Selling Agreements Life Stage: Family Additions There are few greater blessings in life than adding a family member through birth or adoption. In addition to the love and care required, one should also consider protecting that new addition by addressing the legal issues. Top Legal Needs Associated with Family Additions: Will Preparation or Update, Power of Attorney Preparation, Adoption Representation Life Stage: Living with Teenagers When your child reaches their teenage years, they are exposed to an almost overwhelming amount of responsibility, most of which can have legal ramifications. Getting a license, driving, the internet, social media, and social events are just a few experiences that can require advice and/or assistance of a lawyer. Top Legal Needs Associated with Teenagers: Representation in Traffic Matters, Review Agreements (car purchase, student housing), General Legal Consultation

Life Stage: Elder Care/End of Life One of the most important gifts you can give your family is a will. But it is also one thing that most people don’t like to think about. Not having a will creates a burden on those you leave behind and can even mean that the state will distribute your assets. Top Legal Needs Associated with Elder Care/End of Life: Will Preparation, Power of Attorney Preparation, General Document Review. Taking advantage of a plan that offers affordable legal access, can help you navigate life stages, life changes, and the legal issues involved, providing you peace of mind and help dim the confusion of legal matters. “When I’m 64” Thinking of retiring, but need extra income ideas?

If you were born in 1910, you could only expect to live to be 50! Planning for retirement probably was not something on your radar. If you were lucky enough to make it past the illnesses and other things that took so many lives in those days, the average person could not look forward to retiring until age 74. But, those of us who were born between 1946 and 1964 have been changing the rules at every stage of life. Not only has the life expectancy jumped to almost 79 years old, the normal retirement age has gone down nine years for men and eleven years for women. That is the good news. The bad news is that if you were born in 1946 or after and want to retire before age 66 you will not receive full social security benefits. A report by Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies says seven out of ten people at or nearing retirement age expect to, or are already, working past age 65. Some out of necessity, others by choice. There is mixed advice as to whether it is best to start receiving your social security benefits at age 62. While you will draw more if you wait until later, it will take a while to make up for what you lose by not filing as soon as you are eligible. Discuss it with your financial planner, who can give you the best advice. Even if you have planned carefully for retirement, having a mission and feeling productive keeps us young. Whether you are thinking of taking your social security benefits early and need the additional income, just want to stay active, or could use some “mad money”, creating an additional stream of income is a good idea. Starting a new business or monetizing a hobby allows you to bring in extra income, feel productive, and create your own hours.

Additional Income Ideas

• Invest in real estate. • Become a representative for a company with an established product. • Create a product (digital or physical). • Start a courier service. • Refurbish furniture or other items. • Set up an online store. • Become a virtual assistant. • Take paid online surveys. • Turn a hobby or passion into a business. • Launch an errand service. • Consult in your field of expertise.

Is Your Legacy Protected? Access to Money During Illness

Leave a Legacy

With longer life expectancies, people rightly worry about the costs of chronic care. According to a study published in The American Journal of Medicine in 2018, more than 42% of 9.5 million diagnosed with cancer from 2000 to 2012 drained their life’s assets in two years. In the case of a disease like cancer or other qualifying illness, some life insurance policies offer options, called riders, which allow you to use a portion of your death benefit while you are still living to pay the costs associated with a terminal, critical or chronic illness.

People purchase life insurance for two reasons, you love someone, or you owe someone. Many planning strategies use the death benefit from a life insurance policy as a funding source to leave a legacy for their families and to pay off debts.

Long-term care benefits, by definition, only cover costs associated with specific care provided. Life insurance riders that offer living benefits usually do not have limits on how you can use your benefits. You choose how to spend it, whether you need to make accommodations at home, buy groceries, or pay travel expenses for visiting family. However, using these benefits may reduce or eliminate the amount your beneficiaries receive.

5 Reasons for Leaving a Legacy with Your Life Insurance: 1. Care for your immediate family, first. The greatest legacy you have is your family. 2. Cement yourself as the cool aunt or uncle. 3. Leave a legacy to your favorite charity. 4. Set up a college scholarship in your name. 5. Build a city park or playground. By Dustin Awtrey Webb-Awtrey Agency

Blessed Are the Peacemakers Making Peace and Resolving Conflicts

We all have conflicts with others. Conflicts between spouses, parents, family members, business partners, or within churches between members or leadership are common. Sometimes we can resolve those ourselves, but sometimes we cannot. Conflict does not have to mean combat. Abraham Lincoln once said, “As a peacemaker, the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man.” For those of us who are Christians, we are called to be peacemakers. Paul wrote, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18. Living at peace is not easy when: someone is lying about you, the other parent is alienating you from the children, you’ve been cheated on, you disagree with your siblings about how to care for an aging parent, or you are dividing marital assets. However, Jesus gave instructions in Matthew 18:15-20 about how His followers are to resolve conflicts: (1) go directly to the person (2) if no resolution bring in another person (3) if no resolution go to the church. The second step in that process is where either a mediator or a Christian Conciliator comes in. Conflict resolution through mediation or Christian Conciliation brings in a third person to help guide you to resolution. Conciliation differs from regular mediation. It draws out the underlying reason(s) for the dispute, rather than strictly focusing on resolving the conflict, encouraging meaningful change and a way to resolve the conflict while preserving your Christian witness. Christian Conciliation requires all parties to be in agreement to: a. Pursue overcoming the distrust and hostility to reach a resolution of the conflict. b. Commit to pray for one another. c. Commit to communicating respectfully. d. Focus on your own responsibilities. e. Focus on the opportunity that conflict provides: to glorify God, serve others, and grow to be like Christ. See, 1 Cor. 10:31-11:1 Webster’s Dictionary defines mediation as “Intervention between conflicting parties to promote reconciliation, settlement, or compromise.” A mediator or conciliator trained in divorce and family law can lend assistance during this particularly difficult time. Potential Benefits of Mediation and Christian Conciliation: • Control your future. • Save money and time. • Create workable solutions for your situation. • Avoid contentious and lengthy legal battle. • Preserve relationships. As an attorney, I represent men and women in high-conflict divorce and custody cases and see people every day in the midst of battle. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. I have seen the benefits of resolving conflicts at mediation. Clients are able to walk away from mediation and into their new beginning with hope for their future. A Stich in Time Saveuns e System m

Boosting Your Im

What if you had a multi-level defense system constantly working to protect you from invaders? Surprise! You do. Your im-

mune system is always on the job guarding you from potentially harmful substances. If everything is working properly, you may not notice anything is happening. It does its job and the potential to wreak havoc passes silently through your body. But if the system is out of balance, its ability to combat the threat is compromised. Amazingly, the immune system is always learning and adapting so that the body can fight against bacteria and viruses that change over time. The immune system is really made up of two different systems that complement each other: • Innate - Works as a general defense against pathogens. • Adaptive - Targets very specific pathogens that the body has already had contact with.

Immune System Boosters

Daily exercise, adequate sleep and reducing stress all help keep your immune system in top form. But a healthy diet also plays a key role. Avoid sugars and refined foods and replace them with whole foods and/or supplements.

Herbs, supplements, essential oils and foods thought to boost the immune system: Beta-Carotene Beta-carotene helps fight oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. Most yellow, red and orange fruits and vegetables and leafy greens are good sources, including: sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, kale, spinach, and red bell peppers. Echinacea A 2003 study conducted at the University of Wisconsin Medical School found that echinacea stimulates the immune system, and is especially helpful in the treatment of upper respiratory infections. A 2012 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine shows that it was especially helpful in preventing recurring infections including the common cold. Elderberry Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” understood its ability to boost the immune system by fighting colds, flu, allergies and inflammation. Several studies have verified its ability to treat colds and the flu. The Journal of International Medicine Research published a study showing that when taken within forty-eight hours of the first symptoms, duration was decreased by an average of four days. Ginger The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that rid the

body of toxins. Ginger is believed to break down and cleanse those toxins from the system. Research shows it may be antimicrobial and useful in treating infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders. Oregano Known for its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-parasite compounds oregano is also used for its immune-boosting properties. Studies have shown it to be effective against several bacterial species. Vitamin C Studies show that adequate levels of vitamin C can help reduce respiratory infection symptoms and duration. Foods rich in vitamin C include: citrus fruits, parsley, mangos, bell peppers, guava, melons, tomatoes, kale, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes. Vitamin D A deficiency of vitamin D is associated with autoimmunity and increased susceptibility to infections. A study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital showed that people with lower levels were more likely to report upper respiratory tract infections, even after adjusted for other risk factors. Zinc Research shows that zinc can keep bacteria from building up in nasal passages by interfering with the molecular process, keeping it from passing into other parts of the body. It may shorten the duration and severity of colds and other illnesses.

Immune System Disorders

Autoimmune disorders cause either over activity or under activity of the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, lupus and type 1 diabetes are all examples of autoimmune disorders. In these cases the body is “attacking itself.” It sees a part of the body as a foreign substance that it needs to get rid of. If you have an autoimmune issue, you should avoid immune stimulant herbs and look for adaptogenic herbs that help the body regain balance instead. *This article is for informational purposes only and should not be regarded as medical advice. Always check with your doctor and do your own research before starting on a supplement or herb to boost your immune system. While most people can take them without issues, for some with existing conditions or because of drug interactions their use may be detrimental.

Natural Cleaning with

Essential Oils

Now is a good time to de-clutter your life and give your home and mind a fresh start! For some, cleaning is enjoyable; for others,

it is a chore. No matter how you feel about it, cleaning is an unavoidable part of life. Having a clean environment is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

by Andrea L. Shetley

Due to chemical residue, the pollution inside homes can be 2–5 times higher than outside! According to David Rosenstreich, M.D., the director of the division of allergy and immunology at New York’s Montefiore, “We live in a highly chemically-infused environment where people use tons of products. Just because it’s on the supermarket shelves doesn’t mean it’s safe.” A Home Cleaning Products Study on 6,000 women over a 20-year span was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Cleaning at home as little as once a week over 20 years initiated significant lung damage. Professional cleaners experienced lung damage on par with smoking 20 cigarettes daily for 10–20 years. A Chinese study of nearly 2,300 students found that frequently using cleaning products in the home increased the likelihood of kids having rhinitis (an inflammation of the nose lining) by 29–97%. Using chemical cleaning sprays at home is also linked to triggering existing or creating new cases of asthma. “Fragrance” is a catch-all term that can refer to over 3,000 different chemicals that include carcinogens, allergens, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic chemicals, and environmental toxicants. These synthetic scents can cause allergies, respiratory distress, headaches, dizziness, nausea, immune system dysfunction, damage to airways, and brain fog. They can be found in body care and cosmetic products, air fresheners, cleaning agents, and laundry detergents. Instead of harsh chemicals, try natural cleaners like Castile soap, white vinegar, baking soda, salt, and essential oils. Pure Castile soap is a versatile, all-natural, non-toxic vegetable oilbased soap. It doesn’t lose potency over time and is available in liquid or bar form. It helps lift dirt, stains, and grease, and can be used as a shampoo, body wash, laundry detergent, dish washing soap, and general household cleaner.

White vinegar has been used as a disinfectant for thousands of years. Research indicates it has powerful antifungal and antibacterial properties. It can be used as a fabric softener and for cleaning grease/mineral deposits. It may be too harsh for wood because of its high acidity (try “distilled” white vinegar instead, which has lower acidity).

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is another familiar household product. It can be used as a scrub, carpet cleaner, detergent booster, fabric softener, fruit/veg scrub, oven cleaner, grease remover, and deodorizer. It also can be used to extinguish minor grease fires in the kitchen. Salt is a known effective scrubbing agent. It is useful for cleaning stains and greasy messes. Essential oils (EOs) have natural cleansing properties and can be extremely effective cleaning agents because they are potent and powerful. EOs are extracts taken from plant parts and carefully bottled to preserve the properties of the oil. When choosing EOs to use for household cleaning, make sure the oils are pure, high-quality, come from natural sources, and do not contain any synthetic fillers or contaminants. High-quality EOs are safer to use around the family (including pets). Because EOs are so potent, just a few drops will provide serious cleaning power—often providing a more cost-effective solution than traditional synthetic cleaners. EOs are very versatile—a single oil can be used for several different cleaning tasks. Each EO has a unique chemical profile from a combination of several different components, giving it a diverse set of possible benefits. For example, Lemon essential oil can be taken in drinking water as a refreshing detoxifier, diffused for concentration and energizing, applied topically for congestion/mucus, and used on surfaces as a degreaser/disinfectant. An additional benefit of cleaning with EOs is that you will enjoy the aroma while you clean. Using EOs with uplifting, refreshing, and invigorating scents will make your home feel extra clean. Some of the best EOs for cleansing the air include: Arborvitae, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Tea Tree, Thyme, and Wild Orange. It is always wise to test the EO or your homemade cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area to see how they react with certain types of wood, fabric, granite, etc. This is especially important if you have unique types of furniture, carpet, wood, or other items you are concerned about ruining with cleaning agents. It is important to be aware of the ingredients you use, even if they are considered safe. Take note of any reactions that a cleaning product may cause for anyone in your home (including pets). Always have a place in the home a pet can freely go to that does not have EO aroma. Pets enjoy EOs too, but their bodies are more sensitive and they can easily get overwhelmed. Never confine a pet in a room with EOs. When storing your own EO cleaning agents, the chemistry of the oils will be best preserved in dark glass bottles or stainless steel containers kept in a cool, dry place away from UV rays and other types of light. EOs are corrosive to plastics, so solutions should not be stored long-term in plastic. Be sure to store homemade EO cleaning solutions in areas that children or pets cannot get to in order to keep them safe from improper exposure or ingestion.

1/2 cup unscented liquid Castile soap 1-1/2 cups baking soda 1/4 cup white vinegar

ORGANIZE: An organized home has been proven to reduce stress levels and create a relaxing atmosphere. Establish an organizing system that works for you. DEEP CLEAN: After you remove clutter and get organized, give your home a thorough scrubbing. Start with more advanced deep cleaning jobs, then move to daily/weekly tasks. USE ESSENTIAL OILS: Certain essential oils contain powerful cleansing and purifying properties that make effective and safe cleaning agents.

Oven/BBQ Grill Grate Cleaner Paste

10 drops Tea Tree 10 drops Lemon vinegar for rinse

Mix together all the ingredients to make a paste. OVEN: Empty oven. Wipe down with hot, soapy water. Spread paste all over inside of oven except on heating elements. Let sit at least 4 hours. Remove paste with a rag, brush, or scrub sponge. Final rinse mixture: ⅓ vinegar and ⅔ water in a spray bottle. BBQ GRILL GRATE: Before cleaning, lay plastic or old towel under grate to catch drips. Using brush, paint surfaces of grill grate with paste (avoid heating elements on gas grill). Close grill lid and let set 8–12 hours. Note: DO NOT turn grill on. Using grill brush, scrub softened grill deposits loose. Wipe residue off grate with damp sponge and warm water.

Caring For Your Skin After Radiation Cancer can be a scary word. But with so many advancements over the years, and early detection, it is much easier to beat today. Anyone who has faced cancer and gone through radiation knows that it puts your body through many changes, especially your skin. It may become dry, itchy and flaky, similar to a sunburn. It is important to keep skin moisturized and hydrated. It helps to have a skincare routine for the morning and evening for anyone, but especially after going thru radiation and/or chemo treatment. Always cleanse and tone before you moisturize. To make it easier, some products cleanse and tone at the same time.

Ask Yourself These Questions:

Be Kind to Your Skin While Going Through Treatment: 1. Eat good skin foods: beans, complex carbohydrates, nuts — avoid sugar. 2. Keep skin clean, but do not overdo. 3. Keep skin hydrated. 4. Protect your skin. Years ago, there were not many options to find a quality skincare product. You just purchased what was available at the local drug or retail store. Or maybe a friend knew someone who sold a product they swore by. Today’s world is different. The internet is a vast source of information. That is good and bad. There are many more options, but it is hard to know what options to trust. Look for products that offer free or low-cost samples. Read reviews from people who have actually used the product.

• Is it in your price range? • How does it feel on your skin? • Do you like the smell or is it available unperfumed? Most importantly, always check with your doctor, especially if you are still going through treatment or have had any treatment on your neck or face. Remember, the best option is always prevention. Wear sunscreen to help lower the risk of skin cancer. The second best option is early detection. Watch for signs of skin cancer, have a mammogram to detect breast cancer early and follow any suggestions from your doctor for screening for other types of cancer. t? u o d e s s e Str In pain? d? e s s e r p e D never so busy it d Is your min lows down? s

Over 16 million people reported experiencing major depression in 2015. The same year a Harvard University article,

“When Science Meets Mindfulness,” listed the many benefits of mindfulness and meditation. Studies using MRI show that meditation improves brain function in depressed people.

Rhythmic Breathing

One key to health is self-healing breath-work. By combining mindfulness/meditation with proper breathing we make positive change in our lives and the people around us. An article featured in Scientific American magazine, “Proper Breathing Results in Better Health,” states that benefits include: stress reduction, better sleep, improved attention, insomnia prevention, a calmer brain and many more. Daily stressors can cause us to raise our shoulders and take rapid shallow breaths. Though this may seem normal, it causes our bodies to function in survival mode (Sympathetic Nervous System). Your body is unable to reach optimal health while stuck in fight or flight mode. By changing the breathing pattern from sympathetic to parasympathetic we can train our brains for healthier living.

Try this technique to get into healing mode (Parasympathetic): 1. Breathe in slowly through your nose (from your lower abdomen not your shoulders) to the count of 4 seconds. 2. Hold that breath in for 4 seconds. 3. Exhale slowly for 4 seconds and then hold your breath out for 4 seconds. 4. Repeat NOTE: If this timing is too difficult lower the count to 3 or 2 seconds.

tribute to physical, mental or emotional conditions that have not become symptomatic, preventing the onset altogether. A research study by Rupert and McKinzie involving patients who had failed to respond to traditional medical care, chiropractic and other natural alternatives would have been clinically significant if it showed 15% improvement. B.E.S.T. showed a dramatic 85% improvement in patient symptoms, not only in primary pain, but also in other areas like emotional stress level, depression and overall well-being.

HCT

Heart Centered Therapy (HCT) is another gentle and effective technique used to heal issues causing distress and physical pain. It is a respectful approach to spiritual-emotional-physical healing that guides the personal process toward wholeness without reliving any trauma. Personal stressors and emotional conflict holding us in disease can resolve through this therapeutic transformational process. Limited perspectives and blocks dissolve by learning to discern between perceived information, which can intensify trauma, and higher information received through the wisdom of the heart, directing healing and revealing inner truth. 1. news.harvard.edu > gazette > story > 2018/04 When Science Meets Mindfulness 2. scientificamerican.com > article > Proper Breathing Brings Better Health 3. Avoiding Caregiver

BURNOUT

By Gleria Anderson Home Care Assistance

Feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities of caring for a loved one? One of the most effective ways to avoid caregiver burnout is engaging in mindfulness and recognizing when you need help. Mindfulness is a necessary core competency that we all need to develop. Taking space for yourself will keep you grounded and peaceful while allowing you to be of service to your loved one.

Try relieving stress with one of these mindfulness exercises: 1. Take deep breaths - 5 minutes is all it takes. Focus only on your breath.

2. Practice gratitude - Sit outside, get some sun on your face,

be with your breath, and think of one, two, or three things for which you are truly grateful and bask in the power of gratitude. 3. Connect to others - Call on family and friends to be a listening ear. Verbalizing what is hard and difficult often diffuses the issue at hand or at least creates perspective. 4. Give yourself a break - What do you love to do for yourself that is healthy and renewing? Exercise? Listen to music?

Take a bubble bath? Whatever your “you time” is, take it! 5. Be present - Do one thing at a time. Do the task at hand as mindfully as possible.

Caregiver burnout is real, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone needs a break sometimes. When you’re a caregiver, your responsibilities don’t just go away when you need some time off. Asking for help is an important part of being a caregiver. Taking time for yourself as a caregiver will help you be more present as you care for your loved one and provide them with the best care possible. It can be easier said than done, which is why getting someone to help you can make the difference. When you are faced with being a caregiver and have people in your life who are unwilling or do not know how to help, seeking an outside source as a reliable support is a great way to receive the rest you need and avoid caregiver burnout.

Home... Tips, ideas and making the most of your space.

CURB APPEAL

There is no one formula for creating curb appeal, but you know it when you see it. You instinctively feel the house is loved and cared for. It can be elegant or quirky and that is fine. Unless the home is being prepped for sale, it should reflect the personality of the owners. But, if you choose the more eclectic approach, remember less is more. You can add some touches that make your home stand out without being overwhelming. When you add too many conflicting elements, the eye does not know where to focus. Instead of creating the warm, inviting atmosphere you are striving for, you end up achieving the opposite.

1. Entryway: Friends and family may enter through the back door, but everyone sees the front one. Give it a fresh coat of paint or sealer. Do not forget to spruce up the hardware. Replace or refinish if it is tarnished. Add a new kick plate and doormat. 2. Greenery: Plants, shrubbery and trees bring an inviting element to your home. They can be used to camouflage less attractive areas. Plant flowers for eye-catching color. Consid er creating a container garden in addition to traditional flow er beds. You can use unique containers or flower pots. Install window boxes for a cottage feel. Although greenery brings warmth, if trees and bushes become overgrown, they can distract from the beauty of your home. Trim any overhanging limbs and out of control plants. Pull or kill weeds in walkways and flowerbeds. 3. Bring on the Pressure: Give your house a good cleaning. You will be amazed with the difference. It may look as if you just added a fresh coat of paint. You can use a garden hose, but a pressure washer does a much better job. You can rent one and do it yourself, or hire someone to do it for you. Do not forget to wash sidewalks and walkways. If you do take on the job yourself, be very careful, even though you are only using water, it can cut if you put your hand or any other body part directly in front of it, due to the pressure. 4. Chunk the Junk: Get rid of anything around the house that no longer serves a purpose. If the kids no longer use the bas ketball goal or swing set, donate or toss it. Fill or donate empty flower pots. Hang a garden hose caddy. Hide trash cans behind a wall or place on the most unseen side of the house.

28 • valleyvitalliving.com

5. Do Not Forget the Details: Add a birdbath or fountain. Place matching plants on either side of the front door. Hang flowering plants. Replace dull house numbers. 6. Light it Up: Landscape lighting can make a big impact as well as increase safety. Place lights along a pathway or to spotlight a tree. While wired lighting usually gives off more light, you can always opt for the solar version, easy to place, no instal lation required and normally less expensive. 7. Gutters: Paint or replace gutters. Because it is harder for paint to adhere to metal surfaces, gutters may peel before other areas of the house. If you really want to dress up your house, consider using copper gutters. They are more expen sive, but they add an undeniable sense of elegance. If you are thinking of selling your home, creating curb appeal is one of the best investments you can make. But be careful not to overdo it. You want your home to look warm and appealing, but just as you need to be more neutral indoors for potential buyers to see themselves in your home, the same holds true for the outside.

Our Real Estate Market I am frequently asked the question, “How’s the real estate market?” When I hear that question, I am remind-

ed of an answer that a real estate trainer shared with me some years ago. He said, “Tell people that ask, ‘It’s unbelievable!’” because that answer works whether the market is up or down.” We may laugh at that response, but I guess we should say our current real estate market is “UNBELIEVABLY HOT!” Recently, our local Realtor Association shared the February 2020 statistics with us. The numbers for the HuntsvilleMadison County market were: 554 homes sold; average sales price was approximately $259,000; inventory of homes available was 810; average time-on-the-market was 40 days. These numbers are evidence of a very strong market! When compared to a year ago, we see prices are up, the inventory has shrunk, and the days on-the-market have decreased. What does all this mean to you as a seller or buyer of a home? As a seller, you are in a very advantageous position. With limited available homes, you should be able to attract multiple offers and sell rather quickly. As a buyer, you will have to be vigilant to spot properties when they become available and be prepared to likely compete with other buyers for your dream home.

With this market, the value of a competent realtor can be a great resource to you. A realtor can help you, as a seller, prepare your home for the market, price it appropriately, and provide exposure for your home to a targeted audience to sell quickly. A realtor’s guidance to get you connected with a qualified buyer and “close” in a timely manner is critical. As a buyer, you need your realtor to help you in your search, assist you in organizing your qualifications to move forward promptly on the home of your choice, and be knowledgeable enough to suggest good strategy in negotiating your offer to purchase. So many things go into each transaction to make it workout smartly for both the buyer and seller – even in a “HOT MARKET”. An experienced realtor can make all the difference in being able to take advantage of a “HOT MARKET” and not get “burned!” Rosenblum Realty invites you to seek out our advice and lean on our years of experience on your next real estate transaction. We stand ready to help you — whether selling or buying your home — in this “UNBELIEVABLE” market! By Carey Rosenblum, CRS, GRI, ABR, MRS, SRES Rosenblum Realty

A Little Goes a Long Way

Quick, Inexpensive Upgrades:

Quick, Inexpensive Upgrades for Your Home What was originally the carport of my 60’s era home is now my studio. The high ceilings and lower floor transport me into

a completely different space from the rest of the house. That makes it the perfect area to get creative and let inspiration flow. Or at least it did. As my inspiration has grown, my space has shrunken. My new daydream is the expansion of my perfect space. When I close my eyes, I feel the warmth of the natural light streaming through the floor to ceiling windows and imagine what I will do with all of that extra floor space. Then reality hits. It is not happening anytime soon. While I would love to make my vision come to life, there are other things that need my attention first, like the upkeep on my 60’s era house…. But that is ok. The additional ceiling height has allowed me to go up and be creative with storage solutions so it remains a “getaway” from the rest of the house. Maybe the timing is not right for you to search for that dream home or to add the addition that would make your current house “perfect.” But there are simple, inexpensive things you can do that will make your space more inviting and functional. Sometimes, a few minutes and dollars can make a huge impact.

Switch Plates Replacing plastic switch plates with metal, wood, or ceramic ones adds elegance and personality. Do not forget the outlets and jacks. Window Covers Replace blinds or covers one room or area at a time. Make or purchase a roman shade for your kitchen for added impact. Shelving and Rods Add shelving above your kitchen sink for additional storage. Install a rod or shelf above the oven to store often used gadgets or hang utensils. Organize the Garage Add shelving and hooks. Create hanging storage for larger items by placing hooks on the ceiling. Create an Office Space Unless you regularly work from home, you do not have to have a dedicated room. Paint an old desk or vanity and place it against an empty wall. Add shelving above. Trimwork Replace and caulk any damaged molding. Give it a fresh coat of paint. Dividers Add dividers to cabinets and drawers to keep utensils off the countertop and store cutting blocks, muffin tins and cookie sheets vertically. You could tackle most of these projects over a weekend, or spread them out and knock out an area at a time. Either way, you will be amazed at how easy they are to accomplish and how far they go in making your space, your happy place.

Preheat Heat for ten to fifteen minutes with the lid closed to a temperature of 500F. Heat will loosen any bits of food so they can be brushed off easily. It will also prevent sticking and help meat sear properly. Keep Lid Closed To help prevent flare-ups, only open the lid when needed. Keep a section of your grill free so that if you do have a flare-up you can easily move the food to another spot. Skewers Food stays moister when it is placed closely together on a skewer (avoid over-packing). If you use wooden skewers, try soaking them and then placing in the freezer so they are ready to go when you are.

Think of grilling season and visions of summer come to mind. But in the South, we are blessed with weather that makes it

possible to enjoy a delicious grilled meal, almost year-round. Grilling is easy and it creates less mess in the kitchen, but there is more to successful grilling than just heating up the barbie and throwing on some food.

With a few tips, you can grill like a pro: Start Clean A clean grill not only helps keep food from sticking, it also avoids the buildup of potential carcinogens. Once or twice a year, or as each season begins, take it apart for maintenance and cleaning or have it done professionally. Clean up drips and any stuck on food before or after each use.

Professional Residential Grill Cleaning Service

Get ready for grilling season with a deep clean of your gas or charcoal grill, Big Green Egg, or smoker.

Direct vs. Indirect Generally, if food takes twenty minutes or less to cook, like boneless chicken, place it directly over the flame. To ensure food cooks all the way through, use indirect heat for foods that take longer, like a whole chicken. More Than One Setting Just because your grill has a high setting, does not mean you should always use it. Would you cook everything on your stove on high? Thinner cuts should be cooked on high. Fish, vegetables and chicken do well on medium. Thicker cuts should be cooked on low, indirectly. Sear in the Flavor Searing meat locks in the flavor and gives it that amazing, caramelized outer layer. Place meat on the grill that has been preheated to the highest temperature setting. Turn on each side to brown. Adjust the temperature to the right setting for your cuts and finish cooking.

Our unique barbecue cleaning method provides many benefits for the grill owner: • Food tastes better when cooked on a clean grill. • We remove harmful carcinogens and bacteria that can build up in your grill and be transferred to your food. • A clean grill keeps away rodents and insects and their droppings. • A clean grill reduces dangerous flare-ups. • Exterior panel cleaning is part of every service, so that your grill looks great. • Keeping your grill clean prevents corrosion, extending the life of your grill. • Get the maximum value from your grill purchase with regular cleaning.

CHILDERSBURG

If travel is on your bucket list, there may be faraway places you have always dreamed of visiting. Available time

and finances do not always allow you to quickly check off those fascinating destinations. But don’t worry, there are some amazing places to visit just a short car ride from North Alabama. Childersburg, Alabama, located on the Coosa River in Talladega County is only a couple of hours via Interstate 65 or an additional half hour taking the scenic route. It is worth the drive. Childersburg calls itself the oldest city in America. In 1540 the chief of the Coosa Indians, carried on a litter on the shoulders of his men and accompanied by attendants playing flutes and singing, greeted Hernando de Soto’s southeastern expedition. De Soto and his men rested there for a month before moving on. The area is rich in Indian lore and artifacts. With a lot of written documentation, the city can back up its claim to being the oldest continually occupied town in the United States. Visiting today, you will not find things remaining from the 1500’s, but there is still a lot of history to explore. Four miles northeast of Childersburg, you will find the Kymulga Grist Mill, covered bridge and park. Built in 1864, they are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and are the only pair of structures like them still standing in Alabama. The park is host to weddings, family reunions, educational and music events and the annual Kymulga Grits Festival in May. Tours are given of the Mill, including the inner workings, but flood waters have damaged the foundation recently, so check before you go to see if they are still being offered.

While you are there, be sure to visit the beautiful, Victorian style Rainwater Museum, located in downtown Childersburg. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was purchased in 1993 by the city of Childersburg and is operated by the Childersburg Historic Commission. George Butler gifted the house to his son as a wedding present in 1894, but many think it may have been built before then. Just five miles northeast of Childersburg, you will find beautiful Desoto Caverns. Playing an important role in American history for many centuries, including during the Civil War and prohibition, it is the first cave on record in the United States. A presidential agent, Benjamin Hawkins wrote to George Washington detailing the cave’s beauty in 1796. On your visit, you will first enter the “Healing All Cathedral”, named for the Indian word Kymulga, meaning “healing all”. The caverns have been family owned for over one hundred years. Ida Mathis and her business partners originally purchased the land in 1912 with the idea of mining the quality onyx in the cave. After the market for onyx fell, Ida purchased the remaining shares from her partners. It was not until 1975 that Ida’s great grandson Alex and his wife opened the caverns to the public. Tours take around an hour and include the light, water and laser show. There are many beautiful, historic sites between here and Childersburg. Make it a day trip, or spend the weekend exploring along the way. If you cannot make the trip, research the history and lookup beautiful photos of the different attractions online.

Go With the Flow

Would you like to be more interesting, make new friends, decrease stress, increase productivity, feel happier, and be more creative? Maybe a new hobby is the answer. In his book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, Psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, wrote, “Flow is being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.” According to research conducted by Teresa Amabile, a Harvard professor, people report higher levels of happiness, creativity and productivity for three days after experiencing Flow.

Find the Right Hobby for You by Answering These Questions: 1. What did you enjoy doing as a child? 2. What hobbies have you enjoyed before? You may be able to re-engage or find a variation that is even more fun. Walk the aisles of a craft, sports or book store. What jumps out at you? 3. What do you enjoy now? • Fashion: try designing. • Candles: pour your own. • Art: try your hand at painting. • Eating out: maybe there is a gourmet chef inside of you itching to get out. • Music: learn to play. 4. When was the last time you were able to lose yourself? Were you reading, gardening, or working on a DIY project? 5. What would you like to change about yourself? Maybe yoga, running, or self-improvement courses are a good fit. YouTube is an amazing source. You can find how-to videos on almost any subject. If your new hobby requires more than one person, check out MeetUp.com for groups of people who enjoy the same interest. Try a few different things. Do not give up if your first choice is not the right fit. Go online and research unusual hobbies. Keep looking until you find the thing that enables you to achieve your flow.

Laugh Often, Dream Big and Reach for the Stars Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all; surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself. - Edmund Lee Thrive: To grow vigorous; to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances; to develop, or be successful. Tribe: A large family or other group that someone belongs to; a group of persons having a common character, occupation, or interest. Is there a new skill you have always dreamed of learning, but were not sure where to start? Do you want health tips and to find creative ways of developing new habits? Need ideas to help your business grow? Or maybe you just want to do something fun? Sometimes we have the best intentions, but never seem to get around to those “wish list” items. If we have learned anything over the last few months, it is that we all need to be as prepared as possible to face whatever life brings. We need the skills and to have things in place so when life “gets interesting”, we come to the other side stronger than ever. At Valley Thrive Tribe, you will find information and classes on dozens of topics, contributed by local experts who are willing to share and a community ready to encourage each other. A place where knowledge flows and successes are celebrated. According to Psychology Today, people seem wired to adopt the goals of the people around them. Our mission is to empower our tribe members to thrive through whatever life brings. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Our community is growing.
