It examines why the city matters so much to contemporary critical theory, and why it has inspired so many forms of writing which have attempted to deal with its challenges to think about it and to represent it. Gathering together 40 contributors who look at different modes of writing and film-making in throughout the world, this handbook asks how the modern city has engendered so much theoretical consideration, and looks at cities and their literature from China to Peru, from New York to Paris, from London to Kinshasa. It looks at some of the ways in which modern cities โ€“ whether capitals, shanty-towns, industrial or โ€˜rust-beltโ€™ โ€“ have forced themselves on peopleโ€™s ways of thinking and writing. A Desperate Chance The Wizard Tramp's Revelation, a Thrilling Narrative by Harlan Page Halsey The circumstances that had brought them there were also very strange and unusual. Desmond Dare was the son of a widow who owned a small farm in New York State. There had been a mortgage on this farm which was about to be foreclosed when Desmond, a brave, vigorous lad, sold his only possession, a valuable colt, and determined to enter a walking match for the prize. He was on his way to the city where the match was to take place when in a belt of woods he heard a cry for help. He ran in the direction whence the cry came and found three tramps assailing a fourth man. The vigorous youth sprang to the rescue and drove the three tramps off, and was later persuaded by the man he had rescued to go with him to a rock cavern. There the lad beheld a very beautiful girl of about fourteen whose history was enveloped in a dark mystery; he also learned that the man he had rescued was known as the wizard tramp. The latter was a very strange and peculiar character, a victim of the rum habit, which had brought him away down until he became a tramp of the most pronounced type. This man, however, was really a very shrewd fellow, well educated, not only in book learning, but in the ways of the world, and seeing that Desmond had resolved to take a desperate chance, the tramp volunteered to land him a winner; he succeeded in so doing. The champion of the walking match carried his money to his mother, the tramp went upon an extended spree and spent his share. Afterward the tramp and Desmond Dare started on the road together. The girl had been placed with Mrs. Dare on the farm, and the man and boy proceeded West afoot, determined to locate a gold mine. The former discovered each day some new quality, and held forth to Desmond that some day he would make a very startling revelation. The youth had no idea as to the character of the revelation, but knowing that the tramp, named Brooks, was a very remarkable man, he anticipated a very startling denouement. After many very strange and exciting adventures Brooks, the tramp, and Desmond Dare arrived in the Rockies, and in due time started in to find their gold mine. The previous history of these two remarkable characters can be read in Nos. 90 and 91 of 'OLD SLEUTH'S OWN.' A Fond de Cale French Edition Thomas Mayne Reid (April 4, 1818 - October 22, 1883), was an Irish-American novelist. 'Captain' Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. Reid was born in Ballyroney, a small hamlet near Katesbridge, County Down, in the north of Ireland, the son of Rev. Thomas Mayne Reid Sr., who was a senior clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. His father wanted him to become a Presbyterian minister, so in September 1834 he enrolled at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. However, although he stayed for four years, he could not motivate himself enough to complete his studies and receive a degree. He headed back home to Ballyroney to teach school. In December 1839 he boarded the Dumfriesshire bound for New Orleans, Louisiana, arriving in January 1840. Shortly afterward he found a job as a clerk for corn factor, or trader in the corn market. He stayed in New Orleans for six months. It is said that he left his position for refusing to whip slaves. (Reid later used Louisiana as the setting of one of his best-selling books, an anti-slavery novel entitled The Quadroon.) From New Orleans, Reid traveled to Tennessee. On a plantation near Nashville, he tutored the children of Dr. Peyton Robertson, who some Reid biographers have confused with the Doctor's father, General James Randolph Robertson. (Some twenty years later, Reid would make midTennessee the setting for his novel The Wild Huntress.) Following Dr. Robertson's death, Reid founded a short-lived private school in Nashville. In 1841 he found work as a clerk for a provision dealer in either Natchez, Mississippi or Natchitoches, Louisiana (the latter place seems more likely). Although Reid later claimed to have made several trips to the West during this period of his life (on which he purportedly based some of his novels), the evidence for such journeys is sketchy and confusing at best. A Heroine of France: The Story of Joan of Arc By Evelyn Everett-Green 'A Heroine of France' from Evelyn Everett-Green. English novelist (1856-1932). 'The age of Chivalry--alas!--is dead. The days of miracles are past and gone! What future is there for hapless France? She lies in the dust. How can she hope to rise?' Sir Guy de Laval looked full in our faces as he spoke these words, and what could one reply? Ah me!--those were sad and sorrowful days for France--and for those who thought upon the bygone glories of the past, when she was mistress of herself, held high her head, and was a power with hostile nations. What would the great Charlemagne say, could he see us now? What would even St. Louis of blessed memory feel, could he witness the changes wrought by only a century and a half? Surely it were enough to cause them to turn in their graves! The north lying supine at the feet of the English conqueror; licking his hand, as a dog licks that of his master, lost to all sense of shame that an English infant in his cradle (so to speak) should rule through a regent the fair realm of France, whilst its own lawful King, banished from his capital and from half his kingdom, should keep his Court at Bourges or Chinon, passing his days in idle revelry, heedless of the eclipse of former greatness, careless of the further aggressions threatened by the ever-encroaching foe. Evelyn Ward Everett-Green (1856-1932) was an English novelist who started her writing career with improving and pious stories for children, and later wrote historical fiction for older girls, and then adult romantic fiction. She wrote about 350 books: more than 200 under her own name, and others using the pen-names H. F. E., Cecil Adair, E. Ward, or Evelyn Dare. In 1880 her first published work, Tom Tempest's Victory, appeared, and though it was soon followed by more, she found writing at home difficult, and town winters did not suit her health. In 1883 she went to live outside London with Catherine Mainwaring Sladen, and in the 1890s and early 1900s they had homes in Albury, Surrey. Her novel about Joan of Arc, Called of Her Country (1903), later republished as A Heroine of France, presents Joan as a feminine 'Angelic Maid' in white armour whose inspiring adventures were undertaken in a dutiful spirit. Much of Everett-Green's fiction was aimed at girls, but she also wrote boys' adventure stories, like A Gordon Highlander (1901). Beyond the Marshes Black Rock Michael McGrath, Postmaster Excerpt from Beyond the Marshes Have you ever caught the scent of the clover as you were whirled away by the train beyond the city on a summer's day and sped through the rich pasture lands? And do you remem ber how you stepped forth at the first halting-place to secure a sprig of the sweet, homely flower that had spoken to you so elo quently in its own language, and how you pressed it in your book P Does not its perfume remain with you till this day? And every now and then a fragrance is waited to our inner senses as we read some simple story which is to us as a breath of the clover, bringing us a message of sweet ness and beauty, and going straight to our hearts with thepower that belongs to the secrets which lie hidden at our life's core. And this sweet prairie idyll is surely one of those fra rant messages which lays its ho d on us as we pause for a moment in the midst of our fevered lives and anxious thoughts, and step across the threshold of that chamber where we must needs put our shoes from off our feet, for the place whereon we stand is holy ground. And as we press on again to life's duties, may we bear with us something of the precious perfume diffused by plants which are divine in their origin and which must be divine in their influence. Cameos from English History, from Rollo to Edward II Volume 2By Charlotte Mary Yongewhile returning from an expedition on the Baltic, made a descent on the coast of Viken, a part of Norway, and carried off the cattle wanted by his crew. The King, who happened at that time to be in that district, was highly displeased, and, assembling a council, declared Rolf Ganger an outlaw. His mother, Hilda, a dame of high lineage, in vain interceded for him, and closed her entreaty with a warning in the wild extemporary poetry of the North: Cameos from English History, from Rollo to Edward II by Charlotte M. (Charlotte Mary) Yonge is a rare manuscript, the original residing in some of the great libraries of the world. This book is a reproduction of that original, typed out and formatted to perfection, allowing new generations to enjoy the work. Publishers of the Valley's mission is to bring long out of print manuscripts back to life. Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901), was an English novelist, known for her huge output. She was devoted to the Church of England, and much influenced by John Keble, a near neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Her novels reflected the values and concerns of Anglo-Catholicism. She began writing in 1848, and published during her long life about 100 works, chiefly novels. Her first commercial success, The Heir of Redclyffe (1854), provided the funding to enable the schooner Southern Cross to be put into service on behalf of George Selwyn. Similar charitable works were done with the profits from later novels. She was also editor, for nearly forty years, of a magazine for young ladies, the Monthly Packet with a varied readership, but targeted at British Anglican girls. Young people learn the history of England by reading small books which connect some memorable event that they can understand, and remember, with the name of each kingโ€”such as Tyrrell's arrow-shot with William Rufus, or the wreck of the White Ship with Henry I. But when they begin to grow a little beyond these stories, it becomes difficult to find a history that will give details and enlarge their knowledge, without being too lengthy. They can hardly be expected to remember or take an interest in personages or events left, as it were, in the block. It was the sense of this want that prompted the writing of the series that here follows, in which the endeavor has been to take either individual characters, or events bearing on our history, and work them out as fully as materials permitted, so that each, taken by itself, might form an individual Cameo, or gem in full relief, and thus become impressed upon the mind. From the preface:The 'Cameos' here put together are intended as a book for young people just beyond the elementary histories of England, and able to enter in some degree into the real spirit of events, and to be struck with characters and scenes presented

Canoe Mates in Canada by St. George Rathborne

Kneeling in a 'bullboat,' fashioned from the skin of an animal, and wielding a paddle with the dexterity only to be attained after years of practice in canoeing, a sturdily-built and thoroughly bronzed Canadian lad glanced ever and anon back along the course over which he had so recently passed; and then up at the black storm clouds hurrying out of the mysterious North. It was far away in the wilderness of the Northwest, where this fierce tributary of the great Saskatchewan came pouring down from the timber-clad hills; and all around the lone voyager lay some of the wildest scenery to be met with on the whole continent. Here and there in this vast territory one might come across the occasional trading posts of the wide-reaching Hudson Bay Company, at each of which the resident factor ruled with the arbitrary power of a little czar. It might be he would discover the fire of some Ishmaelite of the forest, a wandering 'timber-cruiser,' marking out new and promising fields for those he served, and surveying the scene of possible future bustling logging camps. Otherwise the country at this time was a vast unknown land, seldom penetrated by human kind, save the Indian fur gatherers. Considering that he was in so vast a wilderness this adventurous lad appeared to have scant luggage in his well battered bullboatโ€”indeed, beyond the buskskin jacket, which he had thrown off because of his exertions, there did not seem to be anything at all aboard the craft, not even a gun, by means of which he might provide himself with food while on the journey downstream. This singular fact would seem to indicate that he might have had trouble of some sort back yonder. Indeed, the occasional glances which he cast over his shoulder added strength to this possibility; though the look upon his strong face was more in the line of chagrin and anger than fear. Now and then he shook his curly head, and muttered something; and once a name passed his lips in anything but a friendly fashionโ€”that of Alexander Gregory. Swifter grew the current, giving plain warning to one so well versed as this lad must be in the vagaries of these mad rivers of the Silent Land that presently it would be racing furiously down a steep incline, with razoredge rocks on every side, apparently only too eager to rend asunder the frail canoe of the adventurous cruiser. Still Owen Dugdale continued to ply the nimble paddle, weaving it in and out like a shuttle. He kept to the middle of the river when it would seem to at least have been the part of wisdom had he edged his craft closer to either shore, so that he might, in time, make a safe landing in preference to trusting himself to the mercy of the wild rapids, in which his frail bullboat would be but as a chip in the swirl of conflicting waters. St. George Henry Rathborne (1854-1938) was a prolific American writer of dime novels. Canoe Mates in Canada, or, Three Boys Afloat on the Saskatchewan was first published in 1912. 'Captain Dieppe' from Anthony Hope. English novelist and playwright (1863-1933). Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (9 February 1863 - 8 July 1933), was a British novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered predominantly for only two books: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, 'minor classics' of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance, books set in fictional European locales similar to the novels. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name and the 1952 version. We are happy to announce this classic book. But the profession to which I belong, which is that of a soldier, and which is the noblest profession a man can follow, is a hazardous one, and were I to delay until to-morrow to write down what I have seen and done, these memoirs might never be written, for, such being the fortune of war, to-morrow might not come. So I propose to tell now of the little I have accomplished in the first twenty-three years of my life, and, from month to month, to add to these memoirs in order that, should I be suddenly taken off, my debit and credit pages may be found carefully written up to date and carried forward. On the other hand, should I live to be an old man, this record of my career will furnish me with material for a more complete autobiography, and will serve as a safeguard against a failing memory. In Two Months in the Camp of Big Bear, the accounts of Theresa Delaney and Theresa Gowanlock were made to conform to the literary convention of the 'Indian captivity narrative.' Sarah Carter's scholarly introduction provokes a careful reconsideration of the text. This edited colleciton examines aspects of the lives of individuals of European ancestry and organizations working with Aboriginal peoples against injustice in colonial Canada between the mid-19th century and the first 2 decades of the 20t century. The people in these chapters allied themselves with Aboriginal people who were actively resisting injustices, and worked in various ways to address them. Consisting of a series of stories, events, and episodes, the book highlights shifting patterns, attitudes, and perspectives toward women in the Prairies. One of Carter's overarching themes is that women are seldom in a position to invent or project their own images, identities, or ideas of themselves, nor are they free to fully author their own texts. Focusing on captivity narratives, a popular genre in the United States that has received little attention in Canada, Carter looks at depictions of white women as victims of Aboriginal aggressors and explores the veracity of a number of accounts, including those of Fanny Kelly and Big Bear captives Theresa Delaney and Theresa Gowanlock, Canada's most famous captives. Carter also examines depictions of Aboriginal women as sinister and dangerous that appeared in the press as well as in government and some missionary publications. These representations of women, and the race and gender hierarchies created by them, endured in the Canadian West long after the last decades of the nineteenth century. Capturing Women fits into a growing body of literature on the question of women, race, and imperialism. Carter adopts a colonial framework, arguing that while the Prairies do not readily conjure up the powerful images of Empire, fundamental features of colonialism are clearly present in the extension of the power of the Canadian state and the maintenance of sharp social, economic, and spatial distinctions between the

Though he would not be thought by the young gentleman himself to harbour the least doubt of his morals, he did not scruple to unbosom himself on that subject to Ferdinand, whose sagacity and virtue he held in great

So Tom Reade and Harry Hazelton have been here? demanded Midshipman Dave Darrin. That handsome young member of the brigade of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis was now in mufti, or cits, - meaning, in other words, that he was out of his Naval uniform and attired in the conventional clothing of a young American when calling on his sweetheart. It will make the situation even clearer to the reader to explain that Dave was back in the home town, on his September leave, after just having completed his second summer practice cruise with the three upper classes from Annapolis. Dave was now a fine looking and 'husky' second classman. He was just a shade more than half way through his course of instruction at Annapolis. Edward L. Stratemeyer (October 4, 1862 - May 10, 1930) was an American publisher and writer of children's fiction. He was one of the most prolific writers in the world, producing in excess of 1,300 books himself, selling in excess of 500 million copies. He also created many well-known fictional book series for juveniles, including The Rover Boys, The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew series, many of which sold millions of copies and are still in publication today. On Stratemeyer's legacy, Fortune wrote: 'As oil had its Rockefeller, literature had its Stratemeyer.' '[...] 'That may be. 'If your uncle is alive he must remember about the land, and must know that the matter will give your father a lot of trouble,' suggested Roger. 'That is true, Roger. But when a man is accused of a grave crime like that, he isn't apt to think about other things.' 'You say he is older than your father?' queried Dave.[...]'. Roundly criticized by church leaders and educators of the time, these short, quick-moving, pocket-sized publications were also, inevitably, wildly popular with readers of all ages. This work looks at the evolution of the dime novel and at the authors, publishers, illustrators, and subject matter of the genre. Also discussed are related types of children's literature, such as story papers, chapbooks, broadsides, serial books, pulp magazines, comic books and today's paperback books. The author shows how these works reveal much about early American life and thought and how they reflect cultural nationalism through their ideological teachings in personal morality and ethics, humanitarian reform and political thought. Overall, this book is a thoughtful consideration of the dime novel's contribution to the genre of children's literature. Eight appendices provide a wealth of information, offering an annotated bibliography of dime novels and listing series books, story paper periodicals, characters,

Dave is still at his well-liked boarding-school, Oak Hall, with his lively but manly comrades, who rejoice with him that he not only has discovered his parentage, but has a father and sister living, though unaware of his existence. Dave cannot rest until he finds those of his own family, and having secured leave of absence from school and accompanied by his chum, the son of a United States Senator, he goes to England only to find that his father has left on an expedition to the upper part of Norway. The boys follow in a most exciting pursuit which is replete with adventure. Edward L. Stratemeyer (October 4, 1862 - May 10, 1930) was an American publisher and writer of children's fiction. He was one of the most prolific writers in the world, producing in excess of 1,300 books himself, selling in excess of 500 million copies. On Stratemeyer's legacy, Fortune wrote: 'As oil had its Rockefeller, literature had its Stratemeyer.' 'Dave Porter on Cave Island' is a complete story in itself but forms the eighth volume in a line issued under the general title of 'Dave Porter Series.'The opening tale of this series, called 'Dave Porter at Oak Hall,' related the adventures of a wide-awake lad at a typical boarding school of to-day. This was followed by 'Dave Porter in the South Seas,' whither our hero had gone to find his father, and then by 'Dave Porter's Return to School.'From Oak Hall, Dave journeyed to Norway, as related in 'Dave Porter in the Far North.'On his return to this country he once more attended school, as told of in 'Dave Porter and His Classmates.' Dave made a host of friends and likewise a few enemies, and some of the latter plotted to do him much harm. When vacation came once more, Dave received an invitation to visit a home in the far west, and what he did on that trip has been set forth in 'Dave Porter at Star Ranch.' Stratemeyer (October 4, 1862 - May 10, 1930) was an American publisher and writer of children's fiction. When vacation came once more, Dave received an invitation to visit a home in the far west, and what he did on that trip has been set forth in 'Dave Porter at Star Ranch.' Then, when vacation days were at an end, he came back to Oak Hall, as related in the seventh volume of this series, entitled, 'Dave Porter and His Rivals.'In the present book we find Dave again at school. Day of the Druid, has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies of their original work and hence the text is clear and readable. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy. Since the appearance of the first science fiction magazine in 1926, thousands of short stories have been published in periodicals devoted to the genre. These stories cover a wide range of subjects, from spacecraft to the human condition, and feature little-known authors as well as masters like Ellison and Asimov. In the past, finding which issue of what magazine ran a certain story was nearly impossible. This much-needed reference tool provides valuable assistance in the daunting task of locating short stories published in science fiction magazines, providing exhaustive indexes to magazines, authors, and titles, allowing a variety of options for research on 34,000 stories appearing in nearly 5,000 issues of 133 genre magazines. Stories from all major American publications, as well as from several minor periodicals, are indexed. Also included is an appendix of the best known and most prolific contributors, giving the titles of all their stories in this work (necessary because the huge author index does not show titles). A guide to how to use this book clarifies its features for the researcher. Diterjemahkan langsung dari teks-teks asli Jepang, Yei Theodora Ozaki, menceritakan kembali legenda-legenda, seperti 'Kisah Putri Hase', 'Si Penebang Bambu dan si Anak Bulan', 'Kisah tentang Momotaro, si Anak Buah Persik' berdasarkan imajinasi dan sentuhan lokal, tanpa menghilangkan ekspresi autentiknya. The Last Viking unravels the life of the man who stands head and shoulders above all those who raced to map the last corners of the world. In 1900, the four great geographical mysteries--the Northwest Passage, the Northeast Passage, the South Pole, and the North Pole--remained blank spots on the globe. Within twenty years Roald Amundsen would claim all four prizes. Renowned for his determination and technical skills, both feared and beloved by his men, Amundsen is a legend of the heroic age of exploration, which shortly thereafter would be tamed by technology, commerce, and publicity. Fรฉd in his lifetime as an international celebrity, pursued by women and creditors, he died in the Arctic on a rescue mission for an inept rival explorer. Stephen R. Bown has unearthed archival material to give Amundsen's life the grim immediacy of Apsley Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World, the exciting detail of The Endurance, and the suspense of a Jon Krakauer tale. The Last Viking is both a thrilling literary biography and a cracking good story. The 1927 autobiography, in English translation, of the first man to traverse the North-West Passage and to reach the South Pole. 'Diamond Dyke' from George Manville Fenn. English novelist, journalist, editor and educationalist (1831-1909). George Manville Fenn--Selective Works 'Diamond Dyke' 'Cutlass and Cudgel' 'Seven Frozen Sailors' George Manville Fenn was an English novelist and journalist who wrote across a variety of genres, both fiction and nonfiction. His works are still widely read today. DigiCat Publishing presents to you this special edition of 'Diamond Dyke' (The Lone Farm on the Veldt - Story of South African Adventure) by George Manville Fenn. DigiCat Publishing considers every written word to be a legacy of humankind. Every DigiCat book has been carefully reproduced for republishing in a new modern format. The books are available in print, as well as ebooks. DigiCat hopes you will treat this work with the acknowledgment and passion it deserves as a classic of world literature. Beyond Gold and Diamonds demonstrates the importance of southern Africa to British literature from the 1880s to the 1920s, from the rise of the systematic exploitation of the region's mineral wealth to the aftermath of World War I. It focuses on fiction by the colonial-born Olive Schreiner, southern Africa's first literary celebrity, as well as by H. Rider Haggard, Gertrude Page, and John Buchan, its most influential authorial informants, British authors who spent significant time in the region and wrote about it as insiders. Tracing the ways in which generic innovation enabled these writers to negotiate cultural and political concerns through a uniquely British South African lens, Melissa Free argues that British South African literature constitutes a distinct field, one that overlaps with but also exists apart from both a national South African literary tradition and a tradition of South African literature in English. The various genres that British South African novelists introducedโ€”the New Woman novel, the female colonial romance, the Rhodesian settler romance, and the modern spy thrillerโ€”anticipated metropolitan literary developments while consolidating Britain's sense of its own dominion in a time of increasing opposition. The ' Dolly Dialogues ' serve much the same purpose that the ballet does in an operaโ€”they are a divertissement pure and simple. The winsome, irresponsible 'Dolly' picks her steps amid the conversational pitfalls which the adroit ' Mr. Carter' spreads for her, with as much dainty sureness as a premiere danseuse, and we cannot but admire and applaud her grace and vivacity. There is no hidden meaning to the 'Dialogues ' any more than there is to 'Dolly.' They but reveal the polished inanity of the modern ball-room, the fashionable frivolity of the five o'clock tea-table, and the harmless flirtations of the lawn-tennis court. As 'trifles light as air,' Mr. Hope offered them to us; as trifles we accept them, and who but the most nobly serious could refuse to smile over their gracefulness, their immaculate innuendo! As a hand-book on 'Polite Conversations; or, The Art of Saying Nothing Gracefully,' these ' Dolly Dialogues ' might almost take rank as a serious classic. As a hand-book on 'Polite Conversations; or, The Art of Saying Nothing Gracefully,' these ' Dolly Dialogues ' might almost take rank as a serious classic. This book is full of wit and humour, told in the first person by the once romantically involved with Dolly, Sam Carter. The Dolly Dialogues is a collection of short stories all linked. Dolly is a flirtatious and funny young woman who marries a dull but wealthy husband, Lord Mickleham, against the wishes of his dull mother and his spiteful sisters. In the character of Dolly Foster, British writer Anthony Hope has created an unforgettable embodiment of the turbulent end of the Victorian era. Constrained by old-fashioned conventions but bursting with newfangled ideas, this young woman is the element that ties together all of the vignettes and short tales collected in The Dolly Dialogues. Reproduction of the original. The publishing house Megali specialises in reproducing historical works in large print to make reading easier for people with impaired vision. Anthony Hope has written two kinds of stories; one interesting for the civilized detail, the other for the situation and plot. When we read the first kind we do not care about the result, and we don't get excited. If we have plenty of leisure and care for little turns of expression, feeling, and thought, and care a great deal for clean and pleasant society, we are content with books like 'e;The Dolly Dialogues.'e; The mixture of tolerance, urbanity, and cynicism is just right for the idle person of refinement who

Dorothy Dale: A Girl of To-Day By Margaret Penrose Immerse yourself in a more innocent time in this enchanting tale about a sweet little girl named Dorothy. In spite of her guileless and kind demeanor, Dorothy often finds herself at the center of controversy and scuttlebutt. In this, the first volume of the beloved Dorothy Dale series, Dorothy and her best pal Tavia take on grumpy teachers, ailing parents, and other challenges of daily life. The train started a second after the two almost breathless girls entered the half-empty chair car. They came in with a rush, and barely found their seats and got settled in them before the easily rolling train had pulled clear of the station and the yards. 'Back to dear old Glenwood School, Doro!' cried Tavia Travers, fairly hugging her more sober companion. 'How do you feel about it?' 'De-lighted, Miss,' laughed Dorothy Dale. 'After our trying experiences in New Yorkโ€”โ€”Well! a country life is strenuous enough for me, I guess.' 'But we did have some fun, Doro. And how we got the best of that hateful Akerson man! I just hate that fellow. I could beat him!' 'Your feeling is not scriptural,' groaned Dorothy,2 though her eyes twinkled. 'Don't you know, if you are struck on one cheek you should turn the other also?' 'But suppose you're hit on the nose?' demanded Tavia. 'One hasn't two noses!' 'Well, Aunt Winnie is well rid of that Akerson,' said Dorothy, with a little sigh of satisfaction. 'And your cousins, Ned and Nat, have you to thank for the salvation of their income,' returned Tavia. 'Us, you mean,' laughed Dorothy. 'You had more to do with the showing up of that real estate agent than I had, Tavia.' 'Nonsenseโ€”โ€” Oh, here's the station where the girls may join us. Do let me open that window, Doro!
