Elizabeth Gordon in the book 'Bird Children' discusses the beautiful nature of various birds in a funny, engaging way. This book is a children's book with colorful illustrations that are not just engaging but realistic and distinctive. Filled with an ambience of creativity, it will impact knowledge in the younger generation. Paperback edition. Published originally in 1912, this charming collection of bird poems and full-color illustrations captures the child in each of the 84 birds included in the book. From Rooster to Lyre, the birds are each depicted as part child and part bird. This classic children's book, along with its predeccessor companion Flower Children, is the perfect gift for any child curious about the natural world. Prepared by Elizabeth' Gordon and illustrated by M.T. Ross you can use this excellent little book to teach your children the names of over 80 flowers which can be found in local gardens throughout the year. This book contains over 80 color illustrations of cherubs draped in the petals and foliage of the flower to make them more fun to learn. Each is accompanied by a catchy 4 line rhyme which tells children of what to look for to identify the flower and what time of year they should be looking for them. Herein you will find flowers like Crocus, Trailing Arbutus, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Tulips, Lily-Of-The-Valley, Dandelion, Wind-flower, Trillium, Pansies and a host more. A flower, a child, and a mother’s heart These three are never so far apart. A child, a flower, and a mother’s love This world’s best gifts from the world above. In preparing this book the author and the artist have attempted to show the kinship of children and flowers—and it is their hope that the little ones into whose hands this volume comes will find herein the proof that their knowledge of what flowers really are is true and that their love for the friendly blossoms is returned many-fold. ALL children are flowers in the garden of God’s love. A flower is the mystical counterpart of a child. To the understanding heart a child is a flower and a flower is a child. God made flowers on the day that He made the world beautiful. Then He gave the world children to play amid the flowers. God has implanted in the breasts of children a natural love for flowers—and no one who keeps that love in his heart has entirely forsaken the land of childhood. To you, then, little child-flowers, this book is lovingly offered as an expression

Reproduction of the original: Black Forest - Village Stories by Berthold Auerbach 'It is a singular story, and yet intimately connected with the great events of modern history, or, what is almost the same thing, with the history of Napoleon. Those were memorable times. Every farmer could see the whole array of history manoeuvre and pass in review beneath his dormer-window: kings and emperors behaved like play-actors, and, sometimes assumed a different dress and a different character in every scene. And all this gorgeous spectacle was at the farmer's service, costing him nothing but his house and home, and occasionally, perhaps, his life. My neighbor Hansgeorge was not quite so unlucky,-as the story will show...' The Black Forest is the topic of the exhibition of the Augustinermuseum, which shows a collection of paintings of the 19th and 20th century. Most art works celebrate the beautiful landscape, some tell the story of the sometimes hard life of the poeple living there in past times and the change of the nature of that area. The exhibition shows about 70 paintings of artists like Emil Lugo, Hans Thoma and Franz Xaver Winterhalter as well as artsts of the Gutacher Malerschule like Wilhelm Hasemann und Curt Liebich. This book is about love and guilt and forgiveness. Walpurga who becomes a wet nurse for the king and queen when they have their first child. Walpurga makes an accusation to one of the queen's attendant's, Countess Irma. Walpurga accuses her of passing romantic looks between the king over the newborn prince's cradle. We are reminded in this novel that guilt will bring us closer to the people we once caused pain and that we should forgive them and let love prevail. 'Mrs James White stood at her cottage door casting anxious glances up at the sky, and down the hill towards the village. If it were fine the rector's wife had promised to come and see the baby, 'and certainly, ' thought Mrs White, shading her eyes with her hand, 'you might call it fine-for April. ' There were sharp showers now and then, to be sure, but the sun shone between whiles, and sudden rays darted through her little window strong enough to light up the whole room. Their searching glances disclosed nothing she was ashamed of, for they showed that the kitchen was neat and well ordered, with bits of good substantial furniture in it, such as a long-bodied clock, table, and dresser of dark oak. ' Black, White And Gray: A Story Of Three Homes This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. Bob Strong's Holidays by John Conroy Hutcheson

'Bob Strong's Holidays' from John Conroy Hutcheson. British author of novels and short stories (1840-1897). John Conroy Hutcheson (1840-1897) was a British author of novels and short stories about life aboard ships at sea. Hutcheson was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1840, and died in Portsea Island, Hampshire, in late 1896 or early 1897. His works include: The Wreck of the Nancy Bell; or, Castaway on Kerguelen Land (1885), The White Squall: a Story of the Sargasso Sea (1887), The Ghost Ship (1903) and She and I. - A love story: a life history (1873). This collection of literature attempts to compile many of the classic works that have stood the test of time and offer them at a reduced, affordable price, in an attractive volume so that everyone can enjoy them. “Bob!”The noise of the train, however, drowned Nellie's voice; besides which Master Bob was further prevented from hearing this appeal to him by reason of his head and shoulders being at that precise instant projected out of the window of the railway-carriage, in utter defiance of the Company's bye-laws to the contrary and of his sister's solicitous entreaties to the same effect—poor Nellie, fearing, in her feminine anxiety, that the door would fly open unexpectedly, from the pressure of Bob's person, and precipitate her brother as suddenly out on the line.“Bob!” she therefore repeated on finding her first summons disregarded, speaking in a louder key and giving a tug to his jacket the better to attract his attention—“I say, Bob!”“Hullo! What's the row?” shouted back the delinquent, hearing her at last, and wriggling himself in from the window like a snail withdrawing itself into its shell, turning round the while his face, slightly flushed with the exertion, to hers—“Anything wrong, eh?”Little Miss Nellie had not expected her timid and tentative conversational advances to be taken up in this downright fashion. Really she was only anxious for some one to sympathise with her and talk about the various objects of interest which came across her notice as they went along; so, Bob's abrupt address, coupled with his gruff tone of voice, fell on her enthusiasm like a wet blanket!“Nothing's the matter,” she replied timidly. “I only wanted to say how nice it is travelling like this.”“You don't mean to say you only called me in to tell me that?” said Bob, almost angrily. “I do think girls are the greatest geese in the world!”With this dogmatic assertion, Master Bob shoved himself head and shoulders out of the window again, utterly ignoring poor Nellie's existence, much to her chagrin and dismay. He was very rude, it must be confessed; but, some allowance should be made for him, all things considered. The book '' Bob Strong's Holidays; Adrift in the Channel, has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies and hence the text is clear and readable. Bob Strong's Holidays - Third Edition is an

Bob, Son of Battle by Alfred Ollivant

Bob, Son of Battle, is a sheepdog so canny and careful of his flock, so deeply devoted to his master, James Moore, and so admired for his poise and wisdom by the residents of a small village in the rugged mountains of England’s North Country, that young though he is, he is already known as Owd Bob. In a recent contest, Bob has proved himself a matchless sheepdog, and if he wins the trophy two more times, he’ll be seen as equal to the legendary sheepdogs of yore. But Bob has a real rival: Red Wull, with his docked tail and bristling yellow fur, a ferocious creature, just like his diminutive master, Adam McAdam, a lonely Scot, estranged not only from his English neighbors but from his son, David. McAdam just can’t stop belittling this strapping young man, all the more so since David began courting Moore’s beautiful daughter Maggie. But what McAdam really wants is for his beloved Wullie to wrest the prize from Bob once and for all. The story takes a darker turn when a troubling new threat to the local flocks emerges. A dog has gone rogue, sneaking out at night to feast on the flesh and blood of the sheep he is bound to protect. Again and again, new sheep fall prey to this relentless predator; again and again, he slips away undetected. This master hunter can only be among the boldest and sharpest of dogs . . . Bob, Son of Battle has long been a beloved classic of children’s literature both in America and in England. Here the celebrated author and translator Lydia Davis, who first read and loved this exciting story as a child, has rendered the challenging idioms of the original into fluent and graceful English of our day, making this tale of rival dogs and rival families and the shadowy terrain between Good and Bad accessible and appealing to readers of all ages. Bob Son of Battle: Large Print Alfred Ollivant Bob, Son of Battle, is a sheepdog so canny and careful of his flock, so deeply devoted to his master, James Moore, and so admired for his poise and wisdom by the residents of a small village in the rugged mountains of England's North Country, that young though he is, he is already known as Owd Bob. In a recent contest, Bob has proved himself a matchless sheepdog, and if he wins the trophy two more times, he'll be seen as equal to the legendary sheepdogs of yore. But Bob has a real rival: Red Wull, with his docked tail and bristling yellow fur, a ferocious creature, just like his diminutive master, Adam McAdam, a lonely Scot, estranged not only from his English neighbors but from his son, David. McAdam just can't stop belittling this strapping young man, all the more so since David began courting Moore's beautiful daughter Maggie. But what McAdam really wants is for his beloved Wullie to wrest the prize from Bob once and for all. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Southern gospel classics that will warm your heart, fill your soul, and even get your toes to tapping. Most of these religious songs come from American soil, but the imagery of the poetry, and some of the twists and turns of the melodies have been borrowed from unknown songwriters in ancient times and foreign lands. The book includes a historical survey of the roots of gospel music--shape-note hymns, religious folk songs, camp meeting spirituals, and sentimental religious songs. All songs are in melody form with lyrics and guitar chords. This book traces the early history of the first English folksong revival during the late Victorian era, focusing on the work of three prominent song collectors, Sabine Baring-Gould, Frank Kidson and Lucy Broadwood. It follows E. David Gregory's earlier book, Victorian Songhunters, continuing the story of English folksong collecting from when that book left off, and is copiously illustrated with examples of the folksongs collected during these years. Following in the tradition of recent work by cultural geographers and historians of maps, this collection examines the apparently familiar figure of Robin Hood as he can be located within spaces that are geographical, cultural, and temporal. The volume is divided into two sections: the first features an interrogation of the literary and other textually transmitted spaces to uncover the critical grounds in which the Robin Hood ’legend’ has traditionally operated. The essays in Part Two take up issues related to performative and experiential space, demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between page, stage, and lived experience. Throughout the volume, the contributors contend with, among other things, modern theories of gender, literary detective work, and the ways in which the settings that once advanced court performances now include digital gaming and the enactment of ’real’ lives. The repertoire files of the late Dr. Barbara Doscher, in which she noted her tips, observations on each particular piece, and notes on how to best teach it, comprise a unique trove of wisdom unmatched by any other source. Laboriously transcribed and annotated by John Nix, one of Doscher's students, the notes are presented here as a companion volume to her best-selling text, The Functional Unity of the Singing Voice. Entries are divided by broad category (art song, arias, folk songs, oratorio, musicals, etc.) and are arranged by song title. Each entry includes author, poet or librettist, key(s) available, ranges (for each key), tessitura, difficulty level, voice types, comments, a summary of the text, and notes as to genre, language, and editions available. Five comprehensive indexes facilitate searching. As a guide to selecting vocal repertoire, this book's practical and sometimes colorful comments on each song or aria will assist

THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days lochfishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the

In 'Bound to Rise' Harry Walton follows in the footsteps of his hero, Benjamin Franklin, and secures a job at a printing business. Despite various setbacks and opposition from his foe, Harry triumphs because of his hard work, use of his talents and determination to succeed. 'Risen from the Ranks' continues the story of Harry Walton as readers learn of how he made good the promise of his boyhood. Horatio Alger was once crowned 'America's bestselling author of all time.' His works are back and they read like never before. E-books come alive with illustrations, commentary, author biography, study questions and more. You will fall in love with these stories of success! 'Sit up to the table, children, breakfast's ready.' The speaker was a woman of middle age, not good-looking in the ordinary acceptation of the term, but nevertheless she looked good. She was dressed with extreme plainness, in a cheap calico; but though cheap, the dress was neat. The children she addressed were six in number, varying in age from twelve to four. The oldest, Harry, the hero of the present story, was a broad-shouldered, sturdy boy, with a frank, open face, resolute, though good-natured. It was not until evening that Harry had a chance to look at his prize. It was a cheap book, costing probably not over a dollar; but except his school-books, and a ragged copy of Robinson Crusoe, '' it was the only book that our hero possessed. So our young hero looked forward with great joy to the pleasure of reading his new book. He did not know much about Benjamin Franklin, but had a vague idea that he was a great man. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. He wrote his first novel, Their Wedding Journey, in 1871, but his literary reputation really took off with the realist novel A Modern Instance, published in 1882, which describes the decay of a marriage. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an American entrepreneur in the paint business. His social views were also strongly reflected in the novels Annie Kilburn (1888) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). While known primarily as a novelist, his short story 'Editha' (1905) - included in the collection Between the Dark and the Daylight (1907) - appears in many anthologies of American literature. Howells also wrote plays, criticism, and essays about contemporary literary figures such as Ibsen, Zola, Verga, and, especially, Tolstoy, which helped establish their reputations in the United States. He also wrote critically in support of many American writers. It is perhaps in this role that he had his greatest influence. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed 'The Dean of American Letters', he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story 'Christmas Every Day', and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. Howells is known to be the father of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction. 'Sure it's me that hopes we've seen the last tough old carry on this same wild-goose chase up to the Frozen North!' 'Hello! there, is that you, Jimmy, letting out that yawp? I thought you had more sporting blood in you than to throw up your hands like that!' 'Oh! well I sometimes say things that don't come from the heart, you know, Jack. Wait, me boy, till I get good and rested up, and mebbe I'll sing a different tune. Ask Ned here if it's me that often shows the white flag when trouble comes.' 'Well, I should say not, Jimmy McGraw. There never was a more stubborn nature in all New York than you, once you'd set your mind on anything. That talk of being discouraged is all on the surface. A thousand cataracts wouldn't keep you from getting to Hudson Bay in the end, if you'd said you meant to reach open water. And Jack Bosworth knows that as well as I do.' 'That's right; I do,' laughed the party mentioned as Jack, as he slapped Jimmy on the back. 'I've seen him tested and tried out many the time, and never once did he squeal. I was only joking, Jimmy; you understand?' 'And sure that's what I was doing when I grunted about the carry. If a foreigner would apprehend (he can never comprehend) this England of ours, with her dear and ancient graces, and her foibles as ancient and hardly less dear; her lawabidingness, her staid, God-fearing citizenship; her parochialism whereby (to use a Greek idiom) she perpetually escapes her own notice being empress of the world; her inveterate snobbery, her incurable habit of mistaking symbols and words for realities; above all, her spacious and beautiful sense of time as builder, healer and only perfecter of worldly things; let him go visit the Cathedral City, sometime the Royal City, of Merchester. He will find it all there, enclosed and casketedÑ'a box where sweets compacted lie.' Let him arrive on a Saturday night and awake next morning to the note of the Cathedral bell, and hear the bugles answering from the barracks up the hill beyond the mediaeval gateway. As he sits down to breakfast the bugles will start sounding nigher, with music absurd and barbarous, but stirring, as the Riflemen come marching down the High Street to Divine Service. In the Minster to which they wend, their disused regimental colours droop along the aisles; tattered, a hundred years since, in Spanish battlefields, and by age worn almost to gauzeÑ'strainers,' says Brother Copas, 'that in their time have clarified much turbid blood.' But these are guerdons of yesterday in comparison with other relics the Minster guards. There is royal dust among themÑSaxon and Dane and NormanÑhoused in painted chests above the choir stalls. 'Quare fremuerunt gentes?' intone the choristers' voices below, Mr. Simeon's weak but accurate tenor among them. 'The kings of the earth stand up, and the rulers take counsel togetherÉ' The Riflemen march down to listen. As they go by ta-ra-ing, the douce citizens of Merchester and their wives and daughters admire from the windows discreetly; but will attend their Divine Service later. This, again, is England. Sundays and week-days at intervals the Cathedral organ throbs across the Close, gently shaking the windows of the Deanery and the Canons' houses, and interrupting the chatter of sparrows in their ivy. Twice or thrice annually a less levitical noise invades, when our State visits its Church; in other words, when with trumpeters and javelin-men the High Sheriff escorts his Majesty's Judges to hear the Assize Sermon. On these occasions the head boy of the great School, which lies a little to the south of the Cathedral, by custom presents a paper to the learned judge, suing for a school holiday; and his lordship, brushing up his Latinity, makes a point of acceding in the best hexameters he can contrive. At his time of life it comes easier to try

The sooner Fort Victor is shut of you the better for all hands, especially the women folks. You're a scoundrel.'Jack sprang to his feet; his hand went back to a hip pocket; but his blazing wolfish eyes were looking into the muzzle of the double-barrel gun that Cameron had swung straight from his hip, both fingers on the triggers.'Put your hands flat on the table, you blackguard,' Cameron commanded. 'If I weren't a married man I'd blow the top of your head off; you're no good on earth; you'd be better dead, but my wife would worry because I did the deed.'The Wolf's empty hand had come forward and was placed, palm downward, on the table... As a reader of a TREDITION CLASSICS book, you support our mission to save many of the amazing works of world literature from oblivion. The author of this little book is both blind and deaf! For many years he has been absolutely blind. He has utterly lost the sense of hearing also; and whilst he speaks with singular clearness, and with some modulation of voice, he can receive no communication from his fellow-creatures except through an alphabet which he carries upon his hand! Every word must be spelled letter by letter. Thus deprived of two of his senses, it is a marvel that he is able to write at all. That he has written a book of more than ordinary interest I am sure the reader will decide when he has read it. There are passages of true poetry scattered here and there, and some descriptive scenes that will not suffer by comparison with those of the best of living authors...We are happy to announce this classic book. Many of the books in our collection have not been published for decades and are therefore not broadly available to the readers. Our goal is to access the very large literary repository of general public books. The main contents of our entire classical books are the original works. George Chapman's 'The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois' is a sequel to his earlier work, 'Bussy D'Ambois,' and was first published in 1613. The play is one of Chapman's dramas based on recent political and historical events in France. Specifically the play draws upon Edward Grimeston's 'A General Inventory of the History of France' as a primary source and revolves around historical events that occurred in 1588, during the reign of Henri III. The drama concerns the story of Clermont D'Ambois whose brother Bussy has been gunned down in an ambush. Clermont becomes involved in a relationship with Tamyra, Bussy's former lover, who urges Clermont to take vengeance on her husband Montsurry, who is responsible for Bussy's murder. Since the events of the play of are more reported rather than enacted 'The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois' has not earned itself a significant stage history. Despite this fact the work stands as an important example of the Jacobean revenge tragedy. Bussy D'Ambois and The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois GEORGE CHAPMAN George Chapman was probably born in the year after Elizabeth's accession. Anthony Wood gives 1557 as the date, but the inscription on his portrait, prefixed to the edition of The Whole Works of Homer in 1616, points to 1559. He was a native of Hitchin in Hertfordshire, as we learn from an allusion in his poem Euthymiæ Raptus or The Teares of Peace, and from W. Browne's reference to him in Britannia's Pastorals as 'the learned shepheard of faire Hitching Hill.' According to Wood 'in 1574 or thereabouts, he being well grounded in school learning was sent to the University.' Wood is uncertain whether he went

A chorus of laughter, just a little derisive, greeted Katherine Crane's enigmatical figure of speech. The merriment came from eleven members of Flamingo Camp Fire, who proceeded to form an arc of a circle in front of the speaker on the hillside grass plot near the white canvas tents of the girls' camp. 'What does it mean to Teddy Bear your teeth?' inquired Julietta Hyde with mock impatience. 'Come, Katherine, you are as much of a problem with your ideas as Harriet Newcomb is with her big words. Do you know the nick-names some of us are thinking of giving to her?' 'No, what is it?' Katherine asked. 'Polly.' 'Campfire Girls at Twin Lakes' by Stella M. Campmates A Story of the Plains Authored by Kirk Munroe 'Campmates' from Kirk Munroe. American writer and conservationist (1850-1930). Campmates: Large Print Kirk Munroe when his senses were again quickened into action by a smothered cry, close at hand. At the same time a dark mass drifted towards him, and he seized hold of it. As the cry seemed to come from this, the man's struggles became directed by a definite purpose. Partially supporting himself by the wreckage, he attempted to guide it to the nearest bank; but so swift was the current that he was swept down stream more than a mile before he succeeded in accomplishing his purpose. Finally his feet touched bottom, and he drew his prize to shore. It was a car seat, torn from its fastenings. Tightly wedged between it and its hinged back was a confused bundle, from which came a smothered wailing. Tearing away the wrappings, Luke Matherson stared for a moment, in a dazed fashion, at what they had held so safely. He could hardly believe that it was a live baby, lying there as rosy and unharmed as though in its cradle. The publishing house Megali specialises in reproducing historical works in large print to make reading easier for people with impaired vision. As Canada came to terms with its role as an independent nation following Confederation in 1867, there was a call for a literary voice to express the needs and desires of a new country. Children’s literature was one of the means through which this new voice found expression. Seen as a tool for both entertaining and educating children, this material is often overtly propagandistic and nationalistic, and addresses some of the key political, economic, and social concerns of Canada as it struggled to maintain national unity during this time. From Nursery Rhymes to Nationhood studies a large variety of children’s literature written in English between 1867 and 1911, revealing a distinct interest in questions of national unity and identity among children’s writers of the day and exploring the influence of American and British authors on the shaping of Canadian identity. The visions of Canada expressed in this material are often in competition with one another, but together they illuminate the country’s attempts to define itself and its relation to the world outside its borders. Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the 'Other.' The treacherous 'redskin' and the 'Indian maiden,' embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty. 'Poet, novelist, theorist, playwright, translator, politician, and teacher, Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010) is one of the most original and influential Italian intellectuals of the second post-war period. An ardent and unremitting historical materialist, he investigated the links between language and ideology, literature and the other arts, together with their functions within the logic of late capitalism. The extraordinary range of his creative work persistently defies conventional aesthetic notions. With their variety of topics and critical perspectives, the essays assembled in this volume explore both the relevance of his theoretical postures and the ideological and formal fabric of his literary production. They highlight his subversive objectives, the complexity of the language, the astonishing linguistic ingenuity, metaliterary significance, whimsical disposition, and provocative social critique. Testimonials by Sanguineti's colleagues and students, presented here in English translation, offer a portrait of the man, his temperament and his distinctiveness, and provide a personal view of the life and work of a brilliant intellectual.' Folengo (1491-1544) was a native of Mantua and a member of the Benedictine order, later to become a runaway monk and satirist. Blending Latin and various Italian dialects in a deliberately droll manner, Baldo follows a sort of French royal juvenile delinquent through imprisonment, fantastical adventures, and a journey to the underworld. Dancing around the Well: The Circulation of Commonplaces in Renaissance Humanism examines the reception and reuse of classical sayings in vernacular and neo-Latin authors of the sixteenth century, especially through the mediation of Erasmus' Adages. That the Tarot originated in ancient Egypt as a divinatory tool is a romantic misconception. Ron Decker’s meticulous scholarship will surprise practitioners and academics alike, revealing the Tarot’s true evolution and meanings as its inventor(s) understood it. The Tarot consists of the Minor Arcana, four suits of cards similar to our modern deck, and the Major Arcana, twenty-two allegorical or “trump” cards. Decker says the four-suit deck was invented in Asia Minor before AD 1000; Italian courtiers added the trumps in the 1400s. But Tarot was first used as a game. Tarot divination was only created in the 1700s by a Parisian fortuneteller who based the trump images on Hermeticism, which merges Greco-Egyptian alchemy, astrology, numerology, magic, and mysticism. Today, the suit-cards are often traced to the ancient Jewish Cabala. But, says Decker, they, too, acquired their meanings only in the 1700s, and he cites a lost numerical system based on Cabala at that time Decker’s interpretation integrates three whole systems-astrological, arithmological, mystagogical (concerning initiation rites into the Mysteries). His depth of knowledge makes the book a must-have for serious students of Tarot and esotericism The Encyclopedia of Italian Literary Studies is a two-volume reference book containing some 600 entries on all aspects of Italian literary culture. It includes analytical essays on authors and works, from the most important figures of Italian literature to little known authors and works that are influential to the field. The Encyclopedia is
