Your support of scholarships The rising cost of education for those who can least afford it:

“Receiving this scholarship has given me great confidence and a belief to succeed” Kathryn Geary, BA (Hons) Accountancy student and scholarship recipient 2010-2013

Today, the average UK student will have spent more than £45,000 on tuition fees and living costs by the time they graduate. This is more than double that of 10 years ago. The days of free tuition and maintenance grants seem like a lifetime ago. We all know how important access to education is and thanks to you, over 40 new scholarships have been created in the past three years, helping those who need it most. The importance of this support cannot be overstated. The lack of parttime employment opportunities for students and rise in overall living costs can make financial hardship a real problem. The support of a scholarship can allow students to focus on their studies, making sure they achieve their academic potential. Continued on Page 3

Horizons

Welcome to the fifth edition of Horizons. You might be receiving this newsletter for the first time, especially if you have just taken part in our telephone campaign. If so, welcome! You are now part of our community of alumni, staff and friends who share our passion for education and what it can achieve.

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities. If you would prefer to receive this Newsletter by email, do let us know.

You may have already read in our alumni communications that we have weathered an uncertain year. However, we have begun 2013 with certainty that we will continue to be an autonomous, successful and financially sustainable institution. We can now look forward to continuing to play a vital role in Higher Education in Wales and in the UK.

While we have maintained our top ‘new’ University in Wales status in many of the league tables, our vision is to become one of the top 10 ‘new’ universities in the UK. As our supporters, you play an essential role in helping us to achieve this vision. Your support makes university a reality for many talented young people through scholarships and bursaries and through your generosity, we are able to raise aspirations and recognise academic achievement by awarding a variety of student prizes. It is also through your support that our applied research continues to be strengthened, making a real difference in the areas in which we focus - sport, art and design, education, management and health sciences. As with all universities, Cardiff Met is a charity and your continued support is crucial. We all know that a decent education, informed by quality research can change lives for the better. Thank you for playing such a significant part in this mission. I hope you enjoy reading about how you are making a difference.

It’s not all about the money… While every gift we receive makes a difference, whether it is £5, £50 or £500, we understand that not everyone is in a position to give at the moment. Many of our alumni are helping the next generation in a variety of other ways:  Offering work placements  Becoming a student mentor  Providing careers advice  Becoming an alumni ambassador. If you are willing to help in this way, please get in touch with Lisa Bowen, Alumni Officer at alumni@cardiffmet.ac.uk Also, remember that if you aren’t able to give at the moment, you can always fundraise on our behalf by doing a sponsored event. See our website for more details: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/supportus. It’s the perfect time to start thinking about the Cardiff Half Marathon in October! 2 for Cardiff Met supporters

“I was delig hted to be a part of the pilot alumni mentoring s cheme and to be able to share my ow n experiences and contacts to help current stud ents. It’s a to u gh job market at th e moment b ut with advice and support, stu dents may well stand a better chanc e of finding a post.” Mike Spinks , Education Class of 1971 and Former President of the Students Union.

Your support of scholarships... The rising cost of education for those who can least afford it Education should be for everyone, regardless of social or economic background. At Cardiff Met we want to make sure that financial constraints are not a barrier for talented individuals who deserve the opportunity to be the best they can be. Your support plays a vital role in ensuring the next generation can fulfil their potential. The great thing is you can make a gift of any amount, as collectively, donations can add up to a surprising amount! For example, we only need ten alumni to give £10 per month to fund a new scholarship every year. Our scholarships start from £1,000 per year for undergraduate students who are most in need. While £1,000 may not seem a lot, it can make a huge impact. Most of us can remember that financial worries can put you under enormous emotional pressure. A scholarship combined with support from our trained staff at the University will help most students overcome the difficulties they face and allow them to concentrate on their studies. Your support does not only help us to fund undergraduate scholarships, postgraduate scholarships are just as important. With undergraduates really feeling the financial squeeze, it is inevitable that fewer students are able to consider continuing their education with a postgraduate qualification.

“It is vital to the UK’s long-term economic success and social progression that home students are not deterred from progression to postgraduate study. The UK’s future growth, both economically and socially, rests on a highly skilled population and we cannot rely upon attracting international talent to provide this base for the future.” Your support is not only making a difference to the lives of the individuals who receive a scholarship, but to the wider community who will benefit from their skills and experience.

Did you know... In the past 3 years you have donated more than £100,000 supporting over 40 new scholarships thank you!

Postgraduate numbers have already fallen across the UK by 8% according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency. This could have a highly negative impact on the UK’s future as pointed out by the 1994 Group of Universities:

10 alumni plus £10 a month = one Scholarship £10 £10 £10 £10 £10 £10 £10 £10 £10 £10

“The scholarship has given me the ability to concentrate solely on my studies and I have only had to work part-time during holiday time to manage the costs of living. This has given me more time to concentrate on my studies and helped me focus on my academic goals.” Owen, undergraduate scholarship recipient

“The scholarship helped immensely in the funding of my studies, it was good to know that the remainder of my year’s fees and studio fees for ceramic materials and firing costs were paid, and I was able to concentrate on my studies without the added anxiety of fee bills to pay.” Sharon, postgraduate scholarship recipient

“[With the scholarship] I have been able to buy essential books to help with my studies and essays, which have helped me to gain better grades. It has also helped me to pay for travel to participate in volunteering, which is vital experience that is needed for me to progress on this course.” Ryan, undergraduate scholarship recipient for Cardiff Met supporters 3

Sport Appeal Update: New 3G Football Facility Thanks to the recent Government matched funding scheme (which matched 50p in every £1 from all your donations), we are now able to embark on the development of a new floodlit 3G Football Centre at the Cyncoed Campus. The Centre will increase participation and provide a much needed facility for the demands of the curriculum, student sport and the local community. The development will be unique in Cardiff, where there is a lack of adequate all weather training and playing facilities. Over 2,000 children attend sports activities at the Cyncoed Campus every week and this includes one of the largest, most comprehensive and credible junior football programmes in Cardiff. When not in use for football, the pitch will be used as a training facility for many other team sports. A detailed plan will be unveiled in the coming months so watch this space! Thank you to everyone who donated when the matched scheme was running as without your support, none of this would be possible.

Your support of research Music can have a special value for many young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Telephone campaign student callers, March 2013

It’s your call

Since September 2012, the Listening Aloud Project, which your donations helped to support, has been working with three special schools to design a range of music technology tools that can broaden inclusion, promote creativity and increase music making in the classroom. The pupils have been actively involved in helping to design these tools. Listening Aloud is currently in its second stage and the new technology is being trialled in a classroom setting to help with other subjects such as maths, phonics and physical education. Over the coming months the new technology tools and activities will start to be used by a broader range of young people within the participating schools and will be made freely available to those who wish to use them. Dr Wendy Keay-Bright from the Cardiff School of Art and Design is working on this project in collaboration with MUSE, Youth Music and CARIAD Interactive.

As we go to press, our annual telephone campaign is underway to generate support for the Development Fund. We will have spoken to over 800 alumni over two weeks. Thank you to everyone taking part this year, a full update will be available in the next issue. The Development Fund makes a difference to current and future students through providing new scholarships and bursaries, funding world-leading research and supporting new resources and equipment.

Inspiring students to succeed Your donations supporting prizes and awards really inspire students to succeed. Some individuals choose to donate a student prize in memory of someone dear to them, while others choose to sponsor a prize through their employer. This year we have received several new sponsored prizes from a number of companies including: Solo Services, Effective Communications and T A Roden, which will be awarded to the highest achieving students at the end of their final year. As always, we are really grateful to everyone who supports us in this way, thank you. If you would like to donate a student prize in memory of someone special or sponsor a prize through your company, please contact Andrew in the Development Office on 029 2020 1591 or awalker@cardiffmet.ac.uk.

Thank you! Since we started fundraising in 2009, we have received over 2,300 donations totalling more than £1.2million. The donations we receive do not replace government funding, but enable projects and activity that otherwise wouldn’t go ahead. The work that is funded here through your support can really transform lives. We would like to publicly thank all our alumni, friends and organisations for their generosity over the past 12 months. Through philanthropic support, we can remain a truly progressive university. *indicates Cardiff Met staff
