2012-2013 Annual Report

A Message from THE

Executive Director This past year we made great strides in advancing our shared vision for Greater Lorain County. The big change at United Way is how we have proposed accomplishing this change. We have learned from the successes and failures of the past and are applying those lessons. Moving forward, our work will be through the combined strength of community collaboratives made up of the individuals and organizations from across the community that bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. We recognize that this calls for systems change and targeting the root causes of complex social problems in our community. The perspective that I often give on this transition is the view that instead of continuously providing Band-Aids for problems, we are researching the causes of the wound, and attacking those issues so that eventually there will be no need for a BandAid anymore. Frankly, it’s a more effective and sustainable way to create the community we all deserve. The measure of our work will not be program outputs – how many programs we’re funding or how many people were served – but it will instead focus on impact. We will strive to help our youth succeed in school, assist low-income families to become financially stable, increase the health of our community and respond to households in a financial crisis. We will collaborate with others to pool resources, align funding and share measurement, all in order to create systems change and communitylevel impact. Reflected in the financial section of this annual report is year one of this transition to Community Impact, with legacy programs receiving transitional funding. The change will be completed by the end of the fiscal year in June 2015. We appreciate the enthusiasm with which our current and future partners have embraced this change. It has caused many to be reminded of their mission in serving our community and we are indebted to those pioneers who have led the charge. The exciting new work that we are now leading with our community collaboratives will be better represented in our next annual report. With the support of our investors and community stakeholders, we will judge our future success on community impact, our ability to bring about strategic, results-oriented and life-changing impact in four key areas: Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs. We appreciate your support and patience as we move forward. Sincerely,

William Harper
