We are taking a proactive stance to uncovering needs and creating solutions around education, income and health. A Letter from the 2010-2011 Board President and Campaign Chair Dear Investors, The challenges individuals in need face are more than personal; they affect Lorain County’s future and continued strength. We believe that our interconnectedness with our community is a responsibility, not a choice. When one child goes hungry, we all feel discomfort. When one parent cannot provide, we all empathize. When one adult feels isolated, we all feel pain. This makes us uniquely Lorain County. We give because we can. We believe. We see boundless opportunities. We care. We Live United. To live independently, to feel safe, to know possibilities, to become involved in community are basic needs for which many individuals in Lorain County yearn. Because of your investment in United Way of Greater Lorain County, children are mentored, teens reach higher, adults can provide, seniors are engaged. Your participation in the 2010 United Way of Greater Lorain County campaign provided more than $2.72 million for critical programming in our community. Fifty-four life-changing programs in Lorain County will continue their unmatched work to support consumers, provide for our youngest students, and engage our most fragile resources. We acknowledge and commend the work of the 31 partner agencies who deliver these unmatched services to strengthen our community. The following pages highlight the impact your involvement in United Way of Greater Lorain County provided. You afforded the opportunities and success stories in this report. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is the largest and most effective federal aid program for people who work and need a little assistance. Enacted by Congress in 1975 to offset the burden of social security taxes on low-wage workers, the credit has been widely praised for its success in supporting work and reducing poverty. United Way of Greater Lorain County is a member of the Lorain County EITC Coalition, a group of non-profit and government agencies working to provide free tax preparation, filing and financial literacy resources for citizens of Lorain County. Recognizing the EITC’s potential economic impact on families and communities, the Lorain County EITC Coalition is initiating outreach and free tax preparation campaigns to ensure that families receive the full amount of the credit they earned. Individuals and couples earning less than $60,000 are, in general, able to connect with EITC for free tax preparation services, saving valuable time that benefits the family. EITC is just one way that United Way of Greater Lorain County is giving back to the community, bringing resources to those who need support and providing opportunities for those without hope.

Advance the Common Good Advancing the common good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us. It’s the idea that we are all connected and interdependent, the idea that we all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and people are healthy. We invite you to be a part of the change. You can give, you can advocate and you can volunteer.
That’s what it means to
