Two University of West Alabama football players concluded the 2008 receiving accolades for their on-field production. Garry Pack and Jon Weinreich collected multiple postseason honors. Pack, a Hattiesburg, Miss.-native, was named the 2008 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II statistical champion for solo tackles, as announced by the NCAA. Pack recorded 77 solo stops in 11 games this season for an average of seven per game. Nathan Yelk of Northern Michigan finished second with 61 tackles, an average of 6.78 per game. Pack led the GSC in total tackles with 114, which ranks 16th in the nation and finished in the top five in six defensive categories for UWA this season.

Pack also garnered Daktronics Second Team All-American, Football Gazette All-American Honorable Mention, D2Football.Com All-American Honorable Mention, 2008 Daktronics All Super-Region 2 First Team, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-Super Region 2 Teams, All-Gulf South Conference First Team, Finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy. Weinreich, a Pismo Beach, Calif.product, was named to the publication’s third team. The junior played in 10 games in his first season with the Tigers, receiving an overall grade of 89-percent, while helping UWA rush for 1,780 yards on the year. Weinreich, who split time at guard and tackle this season, allowed one sack this year and was named All-GSC First Team. 11 members of the UWA football team, headlined by Mitch Warfield being named to the Gulf South Conference Fall All-Academic Team, were honored for their work in the classroom.

With his 2008 selection to the academic squad, the Bay Minette, Ala.-product is a three-time member of the team. Warfield exits the Tiger football program as the all-time leading scorer with 180 points. He connected on 4-of-9 field goals, including the game-wining field goal in UWA’s overtime win against Southern Arkansas. Warfield tallied 2,785 yards on 49 kick offs during the 2008 season. As a sophomore, Warfield was named AFCA First Team All-American along with First Team GSC honors. In the classroom, Warfield sports a 3.57 grade point average in biology. Joining Warfield on the 2008 GSC Fall Honor Roll were Chase Bitowf (3.06-Sports Management), Jacob Burks (3.63-Pre-Engineering), Matt Patterson (3.01-Biology), Wes Pinto (3.05-BioloMitch Warfield gy), Lavanda Powe (3.50-Business Management), Brock Sharp (3.37-Business Management), Daniel Smith (3.24-Physical Education), Greg Smith (3.00-Physical Education), Derek Thomas (3.40-Exercise Science) and Wil Vickery (3.21-Biology). Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities.
