P H I L A D E L P H I A , PA 8  U.S. OPEN

Welcome to the 2019 FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships. We are proud to host this prestigious competition for the ninth consecutive year in Philadelphia, where the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center at Drexel University is transformed into a stage for the world’s best squash. Since Drexel first partnered with US Squash in 2011, the U.S. Open has become a deeply rooted piece of the Philadelphia landscape. At Drexel we value entrepreneurship, innovation and a global perspective while maintaining meaningful engagement with the local community, and the U.S. Open is a perfect platform for these values. We are excited to showcase everything our University has to offer as fans come from around the world to watch the professionals and compete in amateur events throughout the week. Philadelphia is the historic home of squash in the U.S., and the opening of the Arlen Specter US Squash Center across the street in the Amory in 2020 will cement this status for the future. This Specter Center will be the heart of the sport nationally—and worldwide—and offer broad community access and engagement. We are proud to partner with US Squash on this transformative project. I would like to thank FS Investments for returning as title sponsor. Their generous support allows the U.S. Open to continue its momentum as a world leader in areas such as parity in prize money and event presentation. Thank you to all sponsors and patrons—your support shows how much the Philadelphia community has committed to making the U.S. Open a success. We are so fortunate to have our men’s and women’s squash teams represent the Drexel on the national stage. Their success in only a decade since the establishment of a varsity program has been truly exceptional, and I wish them all the best this season. I would also like to thank the hundreds of Drexel professional staff, student volunteers, and faculty members who help make the U.S. Open such a special event. Best of luck to all the competitors in this year’s U.S. Open. Please enjoy your time at Drexel University and make sure to take advantage of all that the vibrant city of Philadelphia has to offer.

US Squash is excited to welcome you to the 2019 FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships! We offer our sincerest thanks to Drexel University—an invaluable partner in staging the U.S. Open since 2011. Drexel’s steadfast support under President John Fry and Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer has enabled US Squash to develop the U.S. Open into one of the most prominent events on the world squash calendar. Our partnership will now extend to the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in the historic Armory in University City, Philadelphia. The Specter Center—now under construction and opening next fall—will model broad community access, serve as a home for the sport and US Squash, elevate the experience of the U.S. Open and amateur U.S. championships, and provide the support our Team USA athletes need to reach their full potential. This week, events such as Women in Sports Day, the Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon and Character in Sports Day will celebrate those who embody the sport’s core values, and we are proud of the ongoing leadership shown by the U.S. Open in prize money parity. Alongside the amazing play of the professionals on court, more than 500 amateur players will compete in events including the Arlen Specter Junior Championships, the Intercollegiate Squash Doubles Championships and the US Squash Skill Level Championships. We are grateful for FS Investments returning for its second year as title sponsor. Their support allows us to continue the U.S. Open’s momentum as a premier championship. Thank you to all our sponsors, patrons, partners and volunteers—we are fortunate to have such wide engagement from the community to make this event possible. We also express our appreciation to the many local clubs and institutions whose involvement has proven critical in helping US Squash to grow the U.S. Open into a festival of squash played at the highest level at every age. Finally, we would like to thank the athletes—juniors, collegians, amateurs and professionals—who make the U.S. Open such an eagerly-anticipated start to the season for fans and players alike. Please enjoy squash played at its very best! Sincerely,

Marshall W. Pagon Chairman of the Board 14  U.S. OPEN

CLASS OF 2019 The Class of 2019 is Ginny Akabane and Bunny Vosters, two pioneering players. This is the first all-women class, to be inducted on Saturday, October 12 at the Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon. Ginny Akabane became a dominant player in the 1970s, winning national titles in the U.S. and Canada and representing Team USA on the first women’s squad to enter the world championships in 1979. As president of the U.S. women’s association from 1979 to 1981, Akabane played a central role in merging the men’s and women’s associations. She was awarded the inaugural Feron’s Wedgwood Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and the Achievement Bowl in 1982. Bunny Vosters (1919-1999) was one of the greatest squash doubles players in history. Only taking up squash in her forties, she won eleven National Doubles titles, and was also the oldest person to ever win a U.S. national open squash tournament at age fifty-eight. Vosters was also longtime board member of the women’s association. 48  U.S. OPEN
