FOREWORD Thank you for reading our annual report--although I must admit, I don’t really see it as that. I see it as a “progress reminder.” When I look back over the year(s) and see the progress, the enhancements, the beauty, the aesthetics and the enhanced green spaces, I am amazed at just how much was accomplished in 12 months. I am also reminded of how grateful I am to work with such a dedicated staff, patient and giving faculty, staff and students, in addition to alumni who generously support all that we accomplish as an institution of higher learning. This report confirms that as a Physical Plant, we have remained true to our mission statement, core values and high expectations. Our work has enhanced the recruitment, retention and matriculation of our students and improved the educational environment for all of us. My hope is that our annual report will provide you an example of the breadth and volume of our work. Managing more than four million square feet of building space and over 300 acres of university grounds can be a challenging task. It is one we embrace! The rewards of our efforts come when we take time to review our accomplishments. It’s exciting to see that The University of Southern Mississippi is continuing to progress. Together we are making Southern Miss a better place for all. Keep Soaring!

IN THE NEWS

Trash Tank

As part of the USM Can anti-litter initiative, and in an effort to track and measure the amount of litter picked up by Physical Plant team members, two “Trash Tanks” were placed in Shoemaker Square. All litter picked up by our team Monday through Friday of Earth Week 2016 was deposited into the tanks as a visual reminder of how litter impacts the Hattiesburg campus and our environment. A whopping 248 pounds Athletic Grounds team member, Davorius Davis, depositing litter into the was collected that week. Using that number to trash tanks. estimate, and excluding special events, that means nearly 13,000 pounds of litter is picked up each year. The Physical Plant and the Office of Sustainability will continue to communicate with students, faculty and staff the #PickItUpUSM message as a part of the anti-litter initiative, and the trash tanks will be placed in the same spot in 2017, with the goal of seeing a reduction in the amount of litter collected.

Arbor Day Students from the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi participated in the annual Arbor Day celebration on the Hattiesburg campus, as they worked with members of the university’s Physical Plant staff in establishing an edible orchard on the south side of the Payne Recreation Center. The garden, which includes a variety of fruit trees and Loren Erickson, superintendent of campus lands with the USM Physical Plant, shrubs, expands the campus’ tree canopy and will and DuBard School students plant fruit trees on the Hattiesburg campus in celebration of Arbor Day. KUDOS. . . The Physical Plant does a great job! They respond quickly to all of the work requests I have put in and are always very professional and nice. I even work with a few that got called out after hours, and they still are very courteous and work diligently!

Y’all are the hardest working people on campus - KEEP IT UP!

I have never had anything but positive experiences with Physical Plant staff and services. The level of professionalism is over the top. I appreciate your unit, and I appreciate the fine Physical Plant employees.

I appreciate your team! Keep up the good work!

They are always courteous, helpful and friendly.

I think that Dr. Crenshaw has done an AMAZING job with all of the on-campus building projects, the tornado, etc., and David Bounds is also extremely accessible and excellent at his job. Please send my congratulations to both of them!

Helen Hooker in the Kennard-Washington Hall is the best worker on staff. She receives big praise from everyone in the building, and it is a joy having her as part of the KWH--at least until she is ready to retire, whenever that may be. All of the Physical Plant staff I’ve encountered are all pleasant and agreeable to work with - great job, everyone.

Kudos to our PP (Physical Plant) Team! Very efficient in responding to so many demands on campus! Thank you all!

Everyone is always super nice.

Physical Plant staff do a great job with following up to make sure requests are completed.
