Restored to the Top! On February 10, 2013, an EF4 tornado crossed the Southern Miss campus, leaving behind a path of destruction and devastation that would instantly add more than 18 projects to the already manpower-taxed Physical Plant team. The process of restoring the front porch of the Hattiesburg campus would not be easy. The tornado’s destructive path traveled east on Hardy Street, striking Elam Arms, the Jazz Lab, Mannoni Performing Arts Center and Marsh Hall. After crossing the Rose Garden and destroying more than 75 mature trees, it damaged the front half of one of the University’s five original buildings, the Ogletree House.

Office of Sustainability Continues to Make an Impact

The Office of Sustainability is a division of the Physical Plant that strives to develop and implement ideas and programs that influence awareness and concern for sustainable efforts, while reducing the university’s carbon footprint. Here’s a look at some of the accomplishments that are making a difference for future generations of Golden Eagles.

• Provided special move-in recycling for freshman and upperclassman move-in days, which included areas of focus at Century Park North, Century Park South and the Quad • Provided game day recycling for all home football games, which included tailgate recycling, in-stadium recycling collection bins, collection of all cardboard from concession stands, and post-game recycling by custodial services team during during Sunday morning cleanup • Introduced a campus-wide sustainability pledge, EcoPromise • Partnered with the City of Hattiesburg and SGA to improve bus service to the community and Southern Miss • Recycling Special Events: SGA Student Appreciation Day and SGA Elections Collection • Partnered with Center for Community and Civic Engagement to collect canned goods during No Impact Week for “Let’s SAAC Hunger” • Created a monthly Swap Table event, a program that received such good feedback that it was expanded to the first Wednesday and Thursday of every month • Reported to the ACUPCC, a required bi-annual progress report that helps access and track progress toward the goals outlined in the Climate Action Plan • Worked in collaboration with Goodwill Industries to expand and improve the move-out donation campaign “Don’t Trash, Donate.” The name of the program was changed to “Moveout Madness.” Donation tables were set up in every residence hall lobby, and a donation truck was on campus two days during finals week, collecting more than 5,000 pounds for Goodwill, and more than 400 pounds of food to Edwards Street Fellowship. • During the RecycleMania 2015 national competition, Southern Miss recycled 101,950 pounds of materials in 8 weeks, the equivalent of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 143 metric tons of CO2 equivalent or taking 28 vehicles off the road. • Implemented the third annual Recyclethon competition. In 4 weeks, 17 teams brought in 13,986 pounds of material. • Hosted the fourth season of the Southern Miss Farmers’ Market at new location, Shoemaker Square • Implemented a successful Earth Week celebration. Events included a healthy nature walk, earth poetry open mic night, an Earth Fair, a Reuse Fair and a field trip to Fulmer’s Farmstead. • Provided three $400 scholarships to students to attend Project Serve: Canada • Diverted a total of 444,434 pounds of materials away from the landfill and into the recycling stream • Purchased containers and created a self-hauling recycling program • Implemented a successful bike program for all three semesters

SGA Joins Physical Plant to Keep Campus Beautiful By: S.K. Beasley

The Physical Plant and the Student Government Association partnered together to launch the USM Can Initiative, an anti-litter campaign that promotes personal responsibility to help keep the campus beautiful. With more than 17,000 students, faculty and staff traversing university grounds, a significant amount of Physical Plant man hours are devoted to picking up litter each day. “Twice per day our custodial team conducts a trash sweep around the building in which they are working, and our grounds team does what we call a “paper run” to pick up any litter before they begin working on our landscape,” said associate vice president for facilities management and planning, Dr. Chris Crenshaw. “That’s a lot of wasted labor, and we could really use the help of everyone that loves Southern Miss to help keep it beautiful.” The campaign encourages everyone to take the pledge to do their part in three simple ways: • If you see trash, pick it up. • Throw trash in the proper receptacle. • Encourage others to be litter-free. Posters were distributed in various high-traffic areas, and both SGA and the Physical Plant also communicated campaign goals via tabeling and social media platforms. Participants were encouraged to post pictures throwing away trash every Thursday for a chance to win a free USM Can T-shirt, using the hashtags #ThrowitAwayThursday and #PickitUpUSM. “It’s not about everyone going out every day and having to pick up trash,” said Jeffrey George, SGA President. “But it’s the daily effort that we make to do the little things that will help keep Southern Miss beautiful. The only cure for litter is you.”

Southern Miss Reaches Energy Consumption Reduction Goal The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) has mandated that all universities reduce energy consumption by 30 percent by the end of fiscal year 2016. The Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus not only met that goal in June of 2015 but exceeded it to 31%. These efforts to reach this goal resulted in changes that produced more than $13 million in energy savings since 2009. “Our HVAC setback program during the summers and holidays has greatly impacted the energy savings we’ve been able to achieve,” said Dr. Chris Crenshaw, associate vice president for facilities planning management. “We appreciate the support and extra efforts of all our campus customers in helping us reduce consumption and meet the IHL-mandated goal.” In addition to the setbacks, efforts have also been made to upgrade and install more energy-efficient lighting and mechanical equipment. The program developed by our Energy Management Team also includes the monitoring of energy usage of boilers, chiller and HVAC systems across campus, as well as working with customers to reduce HVAC usage when facilities are not in use.

CHALLENGES AND HURDLES While our Physical Plant accomplishments are varied and far-reaching, we continue to have many challenges as we work toward our goals for the coming years. • • • • • • • • •

Insufficient financial resources to address aging infrastructure issues Continued need for human capital – currently down over 60 employees compared to peer institutions Continued need for legislative funding for capital projects, repairs and renovations Aging building inventory – 69% of buildings are 25 years or older. Escalating deferred maintenance costs Appropriate space allocation and continued need for storage facilities Need for larger and updated Physical Plant facility Increase in litter and trash and decrease in personal responsibility Staying up to date with changing technology and equipment

GOALS AND OPPORTUNITIES In spite of the challenges, we will continue to serve with excellence and strive to meet the needs of all faculty, staff and students. We look forward to achieving the following goals as we abide by our mission of constructing, enhancing and maintaining the physical environment of The University of Southern Mississippi: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
