WELCOME

The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to welcome you to our 2012-13 Concert Series. We are proud to continue the sound tradition of exciting, innovative and entertaining concerts that we have been bringing to our community for over 100 years. From classical to jazz to opera, from solo performances to chamber music to combined orchestral and choral works, our Concert Series will entertain, educate and feed the soul of every listener. The academic year 2012-2013 marks the 25th season of Dr. Jay Dean as our Director of Orchestral Activities. Dr. Dean has built our symphony orchestra into one of the finest university orchestras in the country. His vision, dedication and passion are without rival, and his work continues to contribute to the quality of life for our students, university and community. We will take some time throughout the Symphony Orchestra season to pay tribute to Dr. Dean, and we hope you will join us at all the orchestra concerts to help us honor his work. This special orchestra season begins with a bang on October 4 as we welcome back to Hattiesburg Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg who thrilled our patrons in 2007 with her technical wizardry and musical artistry. The orchestra season hits its pinnacle in March with Gustav Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 5 and ends with William Walton’s ambitious choral and orchestra work Belshazzar’s Feast. The year also marks the beginning of a new era in our outstanding wind band program. Dr. Catherine Rand takes over the reigns as Director of Bands with two fall Wind Ensemble concerts featuring new commissions and contemporary music for the Wind Ensemble. And of course, both the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will host their “future stars” concerts of student concerto competition winners. We hope everyone will come out in support of Dr. Rand and all of our wonderful wind band ensembles. The Southern Chorale is featuring an American A Cappella repertoire during the 2012-2013 season. American Classics will include the work of Bernstein, Barber, Thompson and Dello Joio. Also included will be prolific living composers like Lauridsen and Whitacre and a section called American Shorts that will highlight folk music and traditional American songs. America’s biggest musical exports, gospel and pop will also be featured. And of course, everyone will want to attend the popular Holiday Spectacular on December 4. We are so fortunate to have incredibly talented faculty who regularly share their artistry as performers. We encourage you to turn to our Faculty Artist Series page and come support this talented group whenever possible. We also offer a variety of extremely talented guest artist performances for your musical enjoyment so be sure to check out that series as well. And again this year, with the generous support of Partners for the Arts, we present an exciting array of chamber music in the Connoisseur’s Chamber Music Series. We present the concert season by genre, but remember if you want to search the series by dates, there is a complete list of the concerts in the back of the booklet. We hope you will keep the booklet for easy reference, and we look forward to seeing you at all of our concert events this season. Enjoy! Dr. Michael A. Miles Director, The School of Music

TO D D A BLOODY GOOD TIME

28 February – 2 March 7:30 p.m. and 3 March 2 p.m. Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium A chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime, Sweeney Todd tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, Sweeney Todd nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor. Audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. Directed by Mike Lopinto with Jennifer Hart, music director; Michael Miles, conductor; Stephen Judd, set designer; Kelly James-Penot, costume designer; Tammy Mansfield, production manager and Daniel Lewis, stage manager, this production is a tour de force for the School of Music and Department of Theatre.
