Welcome! We are thrilled to have you here. This production of Amahl and the Night Visitors marks the opening of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company’s 75th season! It seems fitting to mark this anniversary with one of the most popular and beloved of American operas. Through all of these decades of the SOMTC’s development, growth, and change, one thing has remained the same: our love of and need for you, our audience. Opera, the ultimate combination of all the arts, does not and cannot exist without you. Your attendance, laughter, tears, cheers, and applause form a crucial part of creating this unique art form. Without you, it’s only a rehearsal. The SOMTC exists as an educational vehicle for students of many disciplines. Working together to produce what Wagner called a “Gesamtkunstwerk,” or “total work of art,” provides growth opportunities for our singers, orchestral players, dancers, tech designers, etc., that cannot be found anywhere else. And whether you realize it or not, your attendance today constitutes a crucial part in their educational experience. By being here, you are helping our students grow into better artists and professionals. So, thank you again for coming! We hope you enjoy the performance and that you will return again and again to support another 75 of opera and musical theater at Southern Miss! SMTTT! -Dr. Jonathan Yarrington

About the opera Looking back from our vantage point in 2023, it seems almost inevitable that Gian Carlo Menotti would make his career composing operas. He wrote his first opera before he turned 11; by the time he entered the Milan Conservatory at 13, he had written another. By the end of his career, he had written 27 and had forever changed and elevated the American operatic landscape. His compositional output was not limited to operas, but included ballets, choral works, chamber music, cantatas, and one symphony. Like Wagner, Menotti wrote his own libretti. His poetry and prose demonstrate his command of English, despite Italian being his first language. Menotti's biggest early breakthrough came with Amelia Goes to the Ball (1937), an opera that led to NBC Radio commissioning him to write another work that furthered his fame and reputation, The Old Man and the Thief (1939). After a few other successful works, Menotti wrote his most highly regarded piece, the full-length opera, The Consul (1950), which won him the first of two Pulitzer Prizes in Music. Innovatively, it ran not in an opera house, but in the Ethel Barrymore theater on Broadway, running for more than 250 performances. Several of Menotti’s operas would run on Broadway, a feat that seems almost unthinkable today. Following on the heels of the success of The Consul, another invitation came from the National Broadcasting Company, this time to write the first opera specifically for broadcast television to be premiered on Christmas Eve, 1951. Menotti found inspiration for his Christmas opera - a story about a young disabled boy and his mother, who are visited by the three Wise Men - in Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych, “The Adoration of the Magi,” which hung in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Given only a short time to write the libretto and music, Menotti fell behind and needed help orchestrating the piece. He brought in his colleague and partner, Samuel Barber, who completed the orchestration just in time for the premiere. Despite being under-rehearsed, the Christmas Eve performance was a success. The great conductor Arturo Toscanini told Menotti after the dress rehearsal, “This is the best you’ve ever done.” Given the fact that Amahl and the Night Visitors has become one of the mostperformed operas in English, it appears that Toscanini was right.
