Here on the Hilltop, we are proud of our long tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. The University of San Francisco has won 12 NCAA National Championships, and for more than 100 years, student-athletes have represented this great institution with pride. Mel Khlok celebrates after Women’s Basketball defeats Saint Mary’s

The University of San Francisco will be internationally recognized as a premier Jesuit Catholic, urban University with a global perspective that educates leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world. USF Athletics feeds this vision through the development of a solid, broad-based program that elevates the exposure of the institution by developing leaders on the national and international stages. A successful athletic program, and one that is approachable and upstanding, can rally and unite multiple communities - the USF community, alumni and Bay Area residents in general. These communities all can be positively influenced by, connect to and help support a lifetime of successful athletic teams.

The University of San Francisco is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger commitment to excellence in educating students in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. USF Athletics is built upon four pillars of success that aim to develop young men and women in this tradition: Excel in the Classroom; Win at the Highest Level of Competition; Engage in the Community; and Become Leaders in the World. The entire Department, including coaches, training staff, facilities and equipment personnel and administrators, work to support student-athlete achievement in each of the four pillars, develop leaders and support the principles of the West Coast Conference and the NCAA.

The goal of the Harper for Kids youth character development program is to teach children how to achieve their personal best in life using legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. This special partnership with USF gives Harper for Kids the opportunity to deliver these important life lessons to thousands of children at schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Dons are ideal role models of all that Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success teaches and they make such a positive impact every time they visit a school with us. Student Attendance

12

San Francisco Athletics The student section was renamed the Fog Zone in 2011-12

A loud and spirited student section is the hallmark of collegiate basketball. Students create atmosphere and excitement, provide a competitive edge to our student-athletes, carry their energy and spirit with them around campus and ultimately graduate with a deep sense of pride in and connection to their alma mater. Given the importance of an engaged student body, we have been pleased with our growth and student participation over the past three years. The average men’s basketball student attendance figure in 2011-12 was 745 - a 178% increase over the average figure from the 2009-10 season. With an exciting team, an electric in-game experience, a positive presence on campus and continued collaboration with our University colleagues, our goal is to reach student capacity (1,000) for each and every men’s basketball home game.

Ji Hwan Park and Men’s Golf advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second straight year Annual fundraising is the lifeblood of a successful collegiate athletics program. From scheduling and recruiting to nutritional planning and state-of-the-art strength and conditioning software, annual gifts support those things that directly impact our student-athletes’ ability to succeed. The San Francisco Dons Fund (SFDF) was introduced this year to support these key areas and was a great success. In addition to the satisfaction of enhancing opportunity for student-athletes, donors to the SFDF enjoy a range of benefits. These benefits are a way for us to say “thank you” and are determined not by where the funds are designated, but the total amount donated over the course of the year. In addition, an Athletic Director’s Circle (AD Circle) was formed this year to generate leadership support for USF Athletics. In addition to providing leadership support, AD Circle members are closely engaged with the department, the decisions that will shape its future, and able to provide input and feedback on strategic planning, department vision, facility initiatives; and other key issues impacting USF Athletics.

“The USF Baseball program is a leader in collegiate athletics in everything that they do. The coaching staff does an amazing job of preparing their players for NCAA competition, the rigor and responsibility of being a student-athlete, as well as emphasizing important life skills that extend well beyond ones college years. As an alumni, it is extremely satisfying to come back to Benedetti Diamond to see the wonderful upgrades they’ve completed to the facilities and that those facilities are finally starting to match the hard work, dedication and excellence the program embodies. “ - Jake Bond, Former USF student-athlete, Class of 2005

Student-athlete leadership event

18

San Francisco Athletics Legend of the Hilltop Bill Cartwright returned to speak to the Dons at the Leadership Event

San Francisco Athletics hosted a memorable student-athlete leadership event Tuesday, August 30 at historic Fort Mason. The venue, where young people were shipped off for World War II, was selected intentionally. The Fort Mason location impressed upon student-athletes their fortunate position and set the table for discussions around opportunity, leadership, and service to others. All 2011-12 Dons were in attendance to receive the vision for the year from USF Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell and heard an outstanding speech from threetime San Francisco All-American and NBA Champion Bill Cartwright. Following Cartwright’s remarks, a short video presentation was shown highlighting the outstanding legacy and tradition of San Francisco Athletics. As the final component of the event, Ahern, Murphy & Associates gave a “Leadership the USF Way” presentation for all USF studentathletes, coaches and staff.

NFL Hall-of-Famer Bob St. Clair returned for the ‘51 Football Team Anniversary

The University of San Francisco and USF Athletics welcomed members of the celebrated and storied 1951 Dons Football team back to the Hilltop on Saturday, October 8th, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of one of the most legendary teams in college football history. A 9-0 record and top 10 national ranking brought the ’51 Dons an offer to play in the Orange Bowl - but only if they left their two African American players (Ollie Matson and Burl Toler) behind. Without hesitation, the team refused and as a result of financial losses the football program had to be dropped.

2011-12 highlights

To celebrate the reunion, a cocktail party with team members and their families coincided with the dedication of the Fr. Giambastiani Student-Athlete Learning Center. The following day, USF Chancellor Rev. John Lo Schiavo, S.J., officiated a special mass that was followed by a reception and banquet in the Handlery Room on the Lone Mountain campus.

Record fan attendance merged with a unique approach to fan engagement resulting in the most energized fan experience to date. A chartered bus shuttled Dons fans to and from the Orleans Arena for all games. There, fans were met with an outdoor tailgate party that took place just outside the Orleans Arena entrance. The USF Band, Spirit Squad, and the Don provided entertainment and “This was our third trip to the WCC tournament. There were 11 of us in our party. It was generated a high level of excitement just ahead of tip-off. The WCC tournament was by far the best experience that we have had there. The arena has good site lines for basketball. The set up for the USF pregame receptions was great!” also the site of the inaugural AD’s Circle meeting. - Larry Ratto, Class of 1964

“I didn’t know what to expect at my first WCC Basketball Tournament. It was a great opportunity to meet other USF fans and alumni in addition to a warm welcoming USF staff. The hotel accommodations were fabulous, great pre- and post-game celebrations, and best of all, watching USF Dons Basketball! See you in Las Vegas next year.” - Rick Ruiz, Class of 1986 “This was my first trip to the WCC Basketball Championships. I had such a wonderful experience with friends and fellow Dons fans during the pre-game tailgates, games and activities in Las Vegas.
