A NOTE FROM REX WALTERS ON THE 2012 INCOMING CLASS his is an exceptional class with great student-athletes. These young men have all competed at the top ranks in their respective states and state tournaments. They all come from winning programs. It is an exciting group for me and reflects our ability to recruit student-athletes every year that are achieving at higher and higher levels on the court and in the classroom. We always aim to up the ante, and we feel that this group definitely achieves that. They are all very hardworking, coachable kids. This group is about winning, and they understand the educational opportunities that USF will provide for them. Their average incoming GPA of 3.54 is a testament to their hard work and success in the classroom. The last few years we’ve coached our guys how to win, how to be successful. These student-athletes come from great backgrounds, and we’re confident this is a big step in the right direction for our program. These guys are going to be about winning, representing this University and competing for championships. Our past teams have set the stage for this group to take it to the next, and higher, level. We might be a young team, but you will watch this group grow up before your eyes and do great things. That’s what this thing is all about. Thank you for your support of Dons Basketball, and we look forward to seeing you in War Memorial Gym next season.

ROAR ANDERSEN two early goals against us. I just remember everyone celebrating and being very proud and happy.

USFDons.com is doing a series of profiles highlighting each member of San Francisco’s 2012 Hall of Fame class. Part one features Dons All-American soccer player Roar Andersen. The Norwegian helped San Francisco to NCAA Championships in 1978 and 1980. When you hear someone talk about the University of San Francisco, what are the first things you think about? I think about both the wonderful campus and university and the beautiful City of San Francisco that reminds me of my own hometown, Bergen of Norway. I have so many good memories, especially from my time as a soccer player for the USF Dons. I had such a wonderful opportunity to both study and to play soccer for USF, and also during those years, to travel around the country and visit many new and exciting places when playing against other university soccer teams. What was your favorite class/who was your favorite teacher at USF? I enjoyed most of my classes, but those involving sport – like Sport Psychology, Exercise Physiology – that gave me greater insight in taking part in sport was extra exciting and has been of great help working in sport myself later in life. George McGlynn was a teacher I liked a lot. What do you remember about your first game wearing the Green and Gold? We played a preseason game just after I arrived in San Francisco, and it was against a professional team called the Oakland Stompers. Their left fullback was a very famous former Premier League and Liverpool player from England named Alex Lindsey. We played to a 1-1 draw, and I scored our goal (and I scored again in the next game, so I was very fortunate to get a good start on my USF career). I also remember that our assistant coach, Lee Attack, played on that professional team at the time. Of course it was also very exciting to be a newcomer, but luckily I did fit in well, and I thought that we had some good players and that was of course great fun. What is your favorite memory about playing for the USF Dons? That is winning two NCAA finals, both against the Indiana Hoosiers – 2-0 in 1978 and then 4-3 (in a ”sudden death” victory in overtime) in 1980. We played at Tampa Bay Stadium both times, and I was happy to score one goal in the 1980 final to tie the game at 2-2 just before halftime after being behind 2-0 after

3.

What are three things that describe the teams you played for at USF 1. Good team spirit, and everyone was very eager to win and we did have great self-confidence after winning so many games and being very highly ranked in the nation. 2. It was a very international team with players from many different countries and cultures being able to work together and with great understanding of the game. We also always had great goalies We managed to keep calm under pressure and never got panicked.

What are three things that describe you as a player? 1. Good with both feet – hard shot, good running ability, scored many goals and was also able to score from long range/ distance with both feet. 2. Good understanding of the game, gave good passes, good dribbler. 3. Kept calm and got along well with my teammates and Coach Negoesco and never got in trouble with other opponents or the referee. What is the most important lesson your coach at USF taught you? Coach Negoesco had great trust in us players. We were all involved. He listened to us and gave us much freedom, so it was great teamwork and not a ”one-man show.” This kind of leadership was very motivating. What does it mean to you to be a Don? Originally, to be a Don means to be a gentleman or a nobleman, of Spanish descent. For me personally, it means that I have been lucky enough to be, at one time, part of a great USF soccer and sports tradition. We managed to follow up those good results from previous USF soccer teams. Hopefully I did make my school proud and that I did my service there as a player in a gentlemanly manner of conduct. The 2012 Hub Flynn Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday, May 12 at War Memorial Gym. The festivities start with a 6:00 PM reception in the newly renovated University Center Solarium, followed by a 7:00 PM dinner in “The House That Russell Built.”

KEN PITETTI USFDons.com is doing a series of profiles highlighting each member of San Francisco’s 2012 Hall of Fame class. Part two features two-time Dons Football MVP Ken Pitetti. When you hear someone talk about the University of San Francisco, what are the first things you think about? I have been living between Kansas and Texas since 1974 – so talk of USF did not occur unless someone specifically asked me where I did my undergraduate work. If anything they would say, “Oh yeah, Bill Russell and K.C. Jones played for them.” People East of the Rocky Mountains are vaguely aware that the West Coast exists.

What was your favorite class/who was your favorite teacher at USF? I usually think of Father Zabala (theology). He had a great personality and a good rapport with his students. What do you remember about your first game wearing the Green and Gold? We won—which in those years was a major accomplishment. What is your favorite memory about playing for the USF Dons? That they gave me a chance. I was a walk-on, nobody knew who I was. Although I had played for a very respected high school football team, Archbishop Riordan High School, I was not very big and had no offers from any school so I thought my football days were over. But Coach Pierceall gave me a chance, and I am very thankful. What are three things that describe the teams you played for at USF? Crazy, competitive characters. What are three things that describe you as a player? Crazy, competitive character. What is the most important lesson your coach at USF taught you? Play hard—you ain’t going to be here again in your life. What does it mean to you to be a Don? You got to be smart to deal with the Jesuits.

BRITTANIE BUDINGER One of the most decorated players in program history, Budinger took USF Volleyball to unchartered territory as a senior under head coach Jeff Nelson, lifting the Dons to their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003. A Legend of the Hilltop, Budinger was the first player in program history to have her number (7) retired and departed campus as the all-time leader in kills (1,518). An All-District VIII selection and an AllWest Coast Conference pick as a senior, Budinger ranks in the career top-10 in virtually every offensive category and owns the single-season kills record with 556 (4.8 kpg) during her final year on the Hilltop.

DARRELL TUCKER What was your favorite class/who was your favorite teacher at USF? My favorite class was probably sociology, and my favorite teacher was Dr. Edwards. With sociology, I really felt like you could stretch the boundaries, although you probably couldn’t, but this limitless feeling intrigued me about the subject. Professor Edwards was my academic advisor as well, so maybe I am being a little biased. What do you remember about your first game wearing the Green and Gold? All I could remember was that I was extremely tired after three quarters and had a ton of butterflies, all while Coach Mathews was screaming out demands to us. What is your favorite memory about playing for the USF Dons? My favorite memory was seeing most of my family and friends in one section, supporting me. What are three things that describe the teams you played for at USF? 1. Every team I played for at USF all had one common goal and that was to win and play hard for each other first before anything else. We understood that basketball is a team sport, and our individual basketball goals came second to our common goal. 2. The teams that I played for at USF were very respectful off the court and especially around campus. 3. We were very team-oriented, and we understood that having each other’s back was the only way we could move forward.

USFDons.com is doing a series of profiles highlighting each member of San Francisco’s 2012 Hall of Fame class. Part three features three-time All-West Coast Conference First Team selection Darrell Tucker. The 2000 WCC Freshman of the Year, Tucker departed the Hilltop ranked No. 3 in career scoring with 1,805 career points (16.7 ppg). When you hear someone talk about the University of San Francisco, what are the first things you think about? When I hear someone speak about the University of San Francisco, the first thing that comes to mind for me is the rich athletic tradition for all sports. I think about all the heroes and legends who have passed through this beautiful institution for not only sports, but academics as well.

What are three things that describe you as a player? 1. Scoring threat from all over the court. 2. Versatile. 3. A true team player, who also looked to carry his team. What is the most important lesson your coach at USF taught you? Coach Mathews taught us to always play hard and to be the best college player you could be (and how to handle crazy people!). What does it mean to you to be a Don? Being a Don to me means to be a man or woman of pride and dignity who fought for their team and institution to the best of his or her ability.

TOM LOUNIBOS endary Rod Dedeaux. I was scared to death because I didn’t want to let Dante down for having faith in me. I was numb for the first two innings, playing on the same field that Willie Mays played on. I had a pretty good game with a couple of hits including a double… but we got crushed by USC. After the game, Coach Deadeux came over to Dante and paid me a very nice compliment: “Your kid at shortstop is a gamer.” From that day forward until I graduated, I was Dante’s shortstop. This Game at Candlestick Park in 1975 led to the playing of the inaugural Dante Benedetti Classic in 2006, the first college game ever played at AT&T Park. USFDons.com is doing a series of profiles highlighting each member of San Francisco’s 2012 Hall of Fame class. Part five features former Diamond Don infielder Tom Lounibos, who established the Dante Benedetti Foundation and the Dante Benedetti Classic in honor of Legend of the Hilltop Dante Benedetti. When you hear someone talk about the University of San Francisco, what are the first things you think about? Pride! Sixteen of my family members have attended USF over the past 100 years. The entire Lounibos Family takes great pride in that fact. Also, I think of its remarkable sports history – Bill Russell, KC Jones, Ollie Matson, Pete Rozelle, etc. What was your favorite class/who was your favorite teacher at USF? Economics was my favorite class, but my favorite teacher was my baseball coach Dante Benedetti. What do you remember about your first game wearing the Green and Gold? What is your favorite memory about playing for the USF Dons? Dante Benedetti. I was so proud to have played for Dante, a man that I truly respect. I “walked on” to Dante’s program as a no-name from the sticks (Petaluma). I was a 5-10, skinny, insecure kid that had to be coaxed into trying out. When I left four years later, I was 6-1, confident young man ready to take the next step in life. What are three words that describe the teams you played for at USF? Scrappy, Tenacious, Gamers What are three words that describe you as a player? Tenacious, Focused, Loyal (Team) What is the most important lesson your coach at USF taught you? Never give up, keep fighting and never lose faith. What does it mean to you to be a Don? Pride & Appreciation. Senior forward Darrell Tucker led the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game and departed campus ranked No. 3 in career scoring at 1,805 points. Junior guard John Cox added 15.3 points per night and upped his average to 18.9 per game during league action. Baseball: Despite a tough year, two Diamond Dons turned in outstanding individual offensive seasons. Senior catcher Steve Booth was selected in the ninth round of the Major League Amateur Draft after hitting .316 with 19 home runs and 65 RBI en route to All-West Coast Conference First Team and All-West Region honors. Sophomore outfielder Joe Jacobitz set the USF single-season hits record with 85, hitting .383 with 18 extrabase hits and 44 RBI. Did you know? After completing a legendary 39-year career as the head coach of the men’s soccer program, Steve Negoesco served as the goalkeeper coach for the women’s team.

Lady Dons Highlights Basketball: San Francisco made its first postseason appearance since 1997 with a berth in the 2002 WNIT after posting a 18-12 overall record and a runner-up finish (9-5) in the West Coast Conference. First Team selection forward Carey Sauer (11.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg), guard Lindsey Huff (10.8, 3.4) and WCC Freshman of the Year Toni Russell (5.9, 3.1, 2.6 steals) powered the Dons to notable power-conference wins against Washington (72-68), at Cal (55-52), against Utah (65-56) and at Syracuse (61-56).

University of San Francisco Diamond Dons /// Arms Race

If you ever see a member of the Diamond Dons and hear them say “AEOP,” it is not a Latin phrase learned in the classroom or an obscure rap lyric. It is the simple philosophy used by the USF pitching staff and means “Attack On Every Pitch.” By embracing this culture, the Dons once again pose a formidable challenge on the mound this season and rank among NCAA Division I leaders in multiple categories. We sat down with sophomore RHP Abe Bobb, junior LHP Elliott Waterman, pitching coach Greg Moore and 2011 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year Nino Giarratano to go behind the curtain of the Diamond Dons pitching staff.

1. What’s the biggest reason for the success of the pitching staff this season? MOORE - “The pitching staff has been steady in their preparation. Each day there is a group of pitch-makers on the foul line working smart but using the creativity needed to make the next jump. It’s been a group that uses competition to improve their own goal-setting and execution. This group shows up to work each day.” BOBB - “Our team mentality that consists of the following beliefs: Attack on every pitch, 100 percent commitment to a pitch or decision, getting better every day, having fun and mental separation.” WATERMAN - “I think our staff as a whole pushes each other to get better every day. We all buy into the process and work hard each day.” GIARRATANO - “The work that they put in each and every day before games, after games, during games and leading up to the next moment. They never waste an opportunity to learn, mentally, physically or emotionally.” 2. What is your favorite Coach Moore saying or Nino-ism (that is printable)? BOBB - “After pitching or throwing on a game day or practice, Coach Moore always says, “Let’s do this again sometime”.”

3. How have you grown on the field and off the field since coming to USF? BOBB - “It’s hard to express in words how much stronger I am mentally and physically since coming to USF. The crazy/ fun/supportive/hard-working nature of our team and coaches provides a great atmosphere to better yourself.” WATERMAN - “I believe I have grown both on and off the field. The other pitchers on the staff have pushed me and helped teach me things I never knew before. Whether it is getting mentally stronger or getting stronger in the weight room, I have grown a lot.” GIARRATANO - “(My) patience has grown, knowledge of people and the understanding of the bigger picture.”

GIARRATANO - “AOEP.” WATERMAN - “Coach Moore at the end of each day asks Ben Graff, “What type of day should we have today?” The answer is always, “Let’s have a great day.”

4. Which pitcher has been the biggest surprise this season and why? MOORE - “Alex Balog has been the biggest surprise of 2012. I didn’t think he was going to get anyone out.”

BOBB - “Elliott Waterman. He has accepted his closer role with an animalistic mentality and shoved his changeup like the great Trevor Hoffman.” WATERMAN - “Abe Bobb has been the biggest surprise, seeing the way redshirting last year motivated him to get that much better. He has gotten stronger both mentally and physically and has really shown it on the field becoming a weekend starter.” GIARRATANO - “Haden Hinkle has been a great surprise. He has always put in the work, had the tools. This year he really put it together upstairs (mental approach).” 5. What has been your favorite moment on the mound this season? (You can choose a personal moment or a fellow pitchers’ moment) BOBB - “Beating USD at home in our gold jerseys on a Sunday, the day that the WCC Conference is won.”

MOORE - “My favorite moment of the year came watching junior RHP Haden Hinkle throw the final three innings of our series in Fresno. He executed nine of his first 10 pitches and closed the game out for a win. In his hometown, for three days he prepared without seeing the field, methodically and patiently. It takes sharpness to throw 90 percent of your pitches within six inches of a spot on the catcher’s glove, a heightened awareness that too much time, too many useless emotions or variances often begin to dull over a long series. Haden kept his eyes on the small spot.” COACH MOORE’S CLOSING THOUGHT: “The group is doing a better job of separating with runners on base. It’s important to be 100 percent committed to a pitch, a hold or a pick. We rushed out of some holds early in the year and divided between pitch and pick more often. With experience and the game reps, the staff has done a better job of truly “attacking on every pitch.”

WATERMAN - “The Sunday game at LMU, the way Abe Bobb battled when we gave up the lead, and I came in and the team wore down LMU and came out and scored three runs to beat them in the 10th inning.” GIARRATANO - “My favorite moment on the mound is seeing the ball exchanged by the pitchers to each other and how much teamwork goes into that moment.”

University of San Francisco 2012 /// New Staff Profiles

JIM MILLINDER, Head Coach San Francisco introduced twotime Pac-10 Coach of the Year Jim Millinder as its head women’s soccer coach in December. Millinder spent 11 successful seasons at USC where he guided The Women of Troy to a 135-70-21 (.645) slate, highlighted by eight appearances in the NCAA tournament.

for life in general. If you believe you can accomplish something, you can. We need more of those people. We need a good coaching staff. We need to be specific to the players we have to what type of system we’re running and what their specific roles will be. Since day one, I’ve told them ‘don’t try and play someone else’s role’. Know your role and be very specific with what I’m asking you to do. If we can do that, we’re going to win a lot of soccer games. These kids have bought in all spring long and are working their butts off and doing a great job.

You have been on the job for a few months now. How is the program taking shape? This has been a great spring. I can still remember January 23 when we met with the team for the first time, and the staff and I got together and we laid out the plan. You can set out all the plans you want, but if you can’t implement them, nothing is really going to come from it. We laid out the plan, and the kids have really bought in. They’ve worked extremely hard throughout the spring and have shown a lot of improvement. I just think they’re buying in and working really hard, and we have seen a lot of individual improvement as well. I’m very encouraged by what we’ve seen so far in the spring.

As a global university, how easy has it been to recruit internationally to the University of San Francisco? We signed the captain of the Chilean U-20 National Team. I’m always looking abroad. I have a lot of contacts throughout the world. This is a great city and is very recognizable throughout the world. I think it’s going to be easy to recruit here, it’s just going out there and finding the specific player that I’m actually looking for. I think we’ve done a great job in ’12 recruiting class so far and the ’13 recruiting class is lining up to be the greatest recruiting class that USF’s ever had. Now I’m really looking for specific players. I think it’s a great opportunity to go abroad and bring in quality players to take this program to the next level.

What attracted you to the University of San Francisco? It’s a great conference and San Francisco is a great city. It’s a private school and I’ve been involved with private schools for most of my career. I just think USF is a sleeping giant. I just don’t understand why it hasn’t been more successful. I think there’s a ton of upside here. This is a great, recognizable city. There’s some outstanding talent in Northern California. Scott (Sidwell) had a lot to do with it (coming to USF). I have a great rapport with our athletic director and I just like his vision. Now we just have to roll up the sleeves and go to work. We need to put in the time and get some quality recruits and build the program to what it needs to be. You have proven experience in building successful programs. What are the most important elements for building a winner at USF? There are a handful of things. The most important thing is you have to get the kids, the student-athletes to really want to get out there and work and have a positive attitude. When you don’t win and you kind of develop a losing mentality, it’s like a cancer spreading around your team. We need to inject new players, new life and a new mentality into the program. Once we do that, a lot of positive things are going to take place. Selfbelief is critical to being successful. Forget women’s soccer, but

You guided USC to the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. What would it mean to you to take the Dons to the postseason for the first time? It would be a great accomplishment. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but certainly we’re going to get there. Whenever you can take a program that’s never been there before and get it to the top, you feel that emotion of the hard work and success not only as a coach, but for my players. I want them to feel what it’s like to go to an NCAA Tournament. To be able to get into the press room and experience that you’re on one of the top 64 teams in the country. It’s something they’ll remember all their lives. This is my goal. This is my challenge. It’s going to be a lot of hard work to get there, but for the girls, for myself, it would be quite an accomplishment for this university.

What kind of style and characteristics do you want the Dons to display on and off the field? On the field, we’ve got to be really multi-dimensional. We’ve got to be penetrative, athletic. We’ve got to be able to keep possession. In the West Coast Conference there are several different styles, and we’ve got to be able to remedy the situation in any given match. Off the field, I want my kids to be good

kids. I want them to be recognized out in the community, and I want them to portray the University of San Francisco and themselves as good citizens. I want to go out for training every day and I want it to be enjoyable, and it’s enjoyable when you get kids out there that want to work hard and they’re good teammates and they want to go accomplish. I tell them all the time these are the things we must get better at to achieve the things we want to do.

DONS ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

University of San Francisco 2012 /// New Staff Profiles

DOUG PADRON, Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance Student-athletes work so hard to be successful in their sports. I want to assist in making their experience the best that it can be. I believe our program will assist in creating a better experience for the Dons, and in turn, lead to success. What attracted you to the University of San Francisco? The tremendous reputation and high academic standards. My philosophy works best with student-athletes who are intelligent and accountable. The Dons are both of those things and much more! Doug Padron joined the USF Athletic Department in December 2011 as the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance. In this newly created role, Padron oversees the maximization of student-athlete performance through management of strength and conditioning, sports medicine, mental training and sports nutrition. Padron spent the past decade working at Monmouth, coordinating the health care services for 500 Division I student-athletes. This is a brand new position for the University of San Francisco. How exciting is it to build a program from the ground up? It is professionally stimulating! My number one goal throughout my career has been to have an impact on the lives of the student-athletes that I work with. This position provides a great opportunity to accomplish that goal. USF already had much of what the student-athletes need in place (a talented sports medicine staff, hard-working, intelligent strength and conditioning professionals, as well as a tremendous mental performance coach. What we needed and what I have been able to do is bring it all together so we can create a personalized approach to our student-athletes, and “Create A Better Don!” What are the components to the program? There are four components to the Athletic Performance model at the University of San Francisco: Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Mental Performance and Sports Nutrition. We all share information through our athletic performance profile reporting system and apply the information in our respective area of expertise. What are your goals for enhancing each individual studentathlete? There are several goals, but the main goal is to maximize each student-athlete’s athletic performance. In doing so, I want to make sure that their health and wellness is at the core of our program.

What is your highlight so far in working with the Dons? There have been many good experiences in my short tenure, but not too long ago, there was a watershed moment. Jae Berman (Sports Nutritionist) met with one of our student-athletes, and the entire discussion was spent discussing mental approach to sport. The student-athlete was pushing all questions in that direction. The student-athlete had seen Yvonne Gomez (Mental Performance Coach) in the past but had been non-compliant recently. At the end of the meeting, Jae encouraged the student-athlete to see Yvonne again. Later that evening, Jae informed me of the case and I let Yvonne know through email. As I’m sending the message, Yvonne receives an email from the student-athlete explaining that he/she had not believed in the importance of mental performance training, which is why he/she had not continued sessions. After speaking with Jae, the student-athlete realized how important it was and wanted to see Yvonne ASAP. That experience meant a lot to all of us! It illustrated the value in having all the members of the AP team on the same page. We are a very engaged group and all involved give a great effort to do the best we can for the student-athlete. I hope to have many more experiences like that in the future! What is your top accomplishment so far with USF Athletics? The top accomplishment has been getting our student-athletes to understand the importance of an appropriate diet for their sport. That in itself begins to change the culture and create more ownership for the student-athletes of what they need to do to be successful. It is also a life skill, which is rewarding to the Athletic Performance Team, because we are all educators at heart.

BASKETBALL

University of San Francisco A Look Back at 2011-12 /// Voice of the Dons

Behind the Microphone With pat olson 1971. The Tigers are a great fit from a philosophical viewpoint, as UOP is an independent institution with a strong academic reputation and rich athletic history. NO SHAME IN LOSING TO THE COUGARS: Some college basketball insiders questioned Washington’s State invitation to the College Basketball Insider’s postseason tournament. The Cougars earned themselves a postseason berth despite the fact they lost eight of their final 12 games. Washington State’s overall record of 15-16 and an RPI ranking of 186 were misleading, as the Cougars proved themselves very worthy of postseason play. They were certainly one of the more athletic teams USF faced this season – and they came within one win of capturing the CBI title. The Cougars defeated USF, 89-75, then proceeded to roll past Wyoming, 61-41, and Oregon State, 72-55, before dropping two of three to CBI-champion Pittsburgh.

Longtime voice of Dons Basketball Pat Olson reflects on the 2011-12 season and looks ahead to the future in this entry of “Behind the Microphone.” Olson, who just completed his 21st season with the Green and Gold, has called the play-by-play for more than 600 games for the University of San Francisco. WELCOME TIGERS: The University of the Pacific will be a tremendous addition to the West Coast Conference. UOP has been interested in joining the WCC for the past several seasons, and Bob Thomason, who has over 400 career coaching victories, will continue the league’s reputation as a “coach’s league.” The Tigers will enter the WCC at the start of 2013-14 academic year and will become the league’s 10th member. Having 10 teams is much easier for scheduling as everyone in the league will now have a travel partner. I would think the travel partners would set up like this – USF/Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s/Pacific, Gonzaga/Portland, Loyola Marymount/Pepperdine and San Diego/ Brigham Young. Pacific’s entry into the WCC also means that beginning in 201314, there will be 18 conference games. That leaves two fewer non-conference games – and with the difficult task that midmajors have in scheduling games, this is great news. Pacific was a founding member of the California Basketball Association in 1952. The California Basketball Association later became the WCAC, and the Tigers remained in the conference until

CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII ANYONE?: I receive a lot of calls from USF alumni and fans wanting to know if I have any insight on the schedule for next year. The coaches, along with Athletic Director Scott Sidwell, are all very busy working on the 201213 schedule, so very little is confirmed at this point. With regards to non-conference opponents, the Dons will play on the road at UOP and will host Holy Cross at War Memorial Gym. USF will also play in the 2012 Diamond Head Classic along with Arizona, Indiana State, Miami (FL), Ole Miss, San Diego State, Texas Tech and the host Rainbow Warriors. The remainder of the non-conference schedule will likely not be finalized until late July or early August. 20-WIN PLATEAU: With their 20th win coming against Loyola Marymount, the Dons won 20 games for the first time since the 1981-82 season under Pete Barry. USF finished 25-6 overall that year with wins over California, Georgia and Notre Dame in the non-conference part of the season. Just to give you some perspective, ponder these facts for a moment: In 1982 Ronald Reagan was our President, Dallas was the top show on television and ET was the number one movie at the box office. Madonna made her musical debut, and Michael Jackson released Thriller. I was attending junior college at Diablo Valley College in Concord and Coach Walters was 12 years old. The headliner on the Georgia Bulldogs team that year was Dominique Wilkins – long before he became the “Human Highlight Reel.” WCC TOURNEY RECAP: What a tremendous West Coast Conference postseason tournament. The Orleans Arena is truly a great venue, and Las Vegas is a great destination city. The

Dons played well over their three days. They looked tremendous in their Thursday rout over Portland, and on Friday, I felt their defense simply wore down the Lions in the second half. On Saturday, they gave the top-seeded Gaels all they could handle. Cody Doolin was unbelievable against Saint Mary’s as he played 39 minutes and scored a career-high 28 points with five assists and only one turnover. He was fittingly named to the All-Tournament team following the Monday finale. WCC HALL OF HONOR: The West Coast Conference hosted the fourth annual Hall of Honor breakfast Saturday during the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Championship. Each of the nine schools inducts one new member to the Hall of Honor and the Dons selected basketball legend K.C. Jones. USF Legend of the Hilltop and two-time WCC Player of the Year Mike Farmer introduced his former teammate and shared a few stories from their playing days. Farmer gave a tremendous speech and when Jones stood up to give a proud wave of acknowledgement, he received a standing ovation. It was an extremely touching moment – and the first time in the four-year history of the event that an honoree has received a standing ovation. Well deserved for one of the greatest players ever to wear Green

and Gold. Jones, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, was accompanied by his sister and two daughters. OFFSEASON WORKOUTS: Now that the college basketball season is officially over, the Dons and their coaches can begin their offseason workout program. Per NCAA rules, the coaches are allowed to work with the players two hours per week though June. At these workouts, the coaches are allowed on the floor, but they can only work with four players at a time. The players are also allowed to spend six hours per week working off the court on strength and conditioning. THEY SAID IT: “We plan on reloading, not rebuilding,” Coach Walters told me on his postgame radio show after the seasonending loss versus Washington State in the CBI. “We need to continue to get better players that want to compete for a conference title year in and year out. This program has taken some positive steps, and we need to keep it going.” PAT OLSON BLOGGING: For more Pat Olson blog entries, log on to www.Insider.USFDons.com. Olson writes bi-weekly during the course of the basketball season, with sporadic updates during the offseason.
