/PUBLISHER’S NOTE

A

s a man and a father of two, growing up in the slumlike, poverty stricken neighborhoods that most of us know well, to say that I had been through a lot is an understatement. As a young boy I was taught the characteristics of not only what it took to survive but also what it took to be a man, by societal standards of course. Those characteristics were and still are synonymous with the repetitive notions that we tell ourselves every day as to what the role of a boy leaning on the cusp of manhood should be. Be “tough, strong and courageous!” “Boy’s don’t cry.” “Never show your emotions” but only when it comes to anger because anger showcases your fearlessness, right? “You are to dominate and lead.” All common sentiments we’ve all heard before. But if this is the message we are trying to get across to our sons, what subliminal images are we displaying to our daughters? As we all know, children are very impressionable. Although our intent and actions may be pure when it comes to “raising a man” we must be sure to straddle that line between right and wrong carefully. A boy who grows to believe, “I’m a man. I am strong, tough and superior. I must dominate” could very well internalize it, as “You’re a woman. You’re weak and inferior. You have no value.” These boys eventually turn into men who objectify and abuse women because they only see them as objects. The girls who hear the same message normally internalize it the same way and accept this farce. Abuse and domestic violence has no place anywhere. Ever. In the span of the recent war in Afghanistan, as of 2012 there were 6,614 U.S. troops that were killed. In that same time period, 11,766 women were killed due to domestic violence. In order to create change within our

society we must break our silence when it comes to the “status quo” of what it takes to be a man. We must challenge, deconstruct and redefine what true manhood is! Honestly, collectively as men we are taught that women have less value. Women are viewed as property and it ultimately equates to violence against women. However, like myself, there are a plethora of good men who act outside of this social norm but regardless of the fact we are still apart of the bigger problem. The good news is that we are also a part of the greater solution. Domestic violence, as you can see from the news lately with Ray Rice and others, is at an epidemic high and if you have a daughter of your own you can understand why that is a startling thought. So this is a call to all parents, not just fathers, raising sons. We must come together on how we will progress when it comes to teaching our sons how to be men. We must re-direct the notion that it isn’t okay to have emotions because It is. It is also okay to truly believe in equality, or being “just friends” with a woman without the expectations of sex. It’s okay to be whole. In order to understand true freedom, step outside of the box. Teach and live in a boundless atmosphere where our sons will understand that true liberation only comes from the liberation and uplift of others. Respectfully,

Among Southerners, 62 percent of parents spank their kids and believe that spanking should be accepted 41 percent of the country believes otherwise when it comes to such a touchy subject and believes that this method is outdated.

Information provided by ABCNEWS.com poll

One of the most frequently used strategies to discipline a child, especially a younger child, is spanking. About 94 percent of parents of children ages three to four in the United States report having spanked their children in the previous year. However, use of corporal punishment is linked to negative outcomes for children (e.g., delinquency, antisocial behavior, psychological problems, and alcohol and drug abuse), and may be indicative of ineffective parenting.

Breat Cancer & Pregnancy

A

lthough it is rare for breast cancer to strike younger women, the fact remains that all women are at risk. And for those of childbearing age, the first sign and symptoms of breast cancer leading to a diagnosis can not only be upsetting and unexpected, but complicated as well. Developing breast cancer at a younger age in a woman’s 40s, 30s, even 20s will mean making important and difficult decisions about one’s life and future perhaps much sooner than originally expected. One concern is developing breast cancer during pregnancy, which although rare, can still occur. In this case, the treatment chosen will not only affect the patient and her body, but the growing baby inside her as well. It will depend on what stage of pregnancy she is in (first, second or third trimester) and what stage her cancer is in such as whether or not it’s advanced. Most pregnant women can have treatment for their breast cancer without affecting the baby. But some might be advised by their obstetrician or healthcare practitioner or even decide themselves to terminate the

pregnancy, more so if the pregnancy is in its earlier stages, in order to receive certain treatments that would be too risky otherwise. But it is essential to remember that it is a woman’s own decision, it is not medically necessary to terminate a pregnancy if the expectant mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. All it does is limit treatment options. Breast cancer itself will not affect the fetus only certain tests and treatments will. Generally speaking, tamoxifen, chemotherapy, radiation, and other drug-related therapies are avoided if the woman is pregnant because of their associated risks with birth defects. Tamoxifen, especially, is considered very unsafe because it is a hormonal therapy and is never recommended if the woman is pregnant or planning on conceiving. Surgery, either a lumpectomy or mastectomy, is the most common and preferred method of treatment for breast cancer in pregnant women. Another concern is whether or not breast cancer survivors can or should go on to have children after treatment and recovery. It’s a very controversial issue with firm advocates on both sides of the debate.

10 Urban Parenting Magazine |

October 2014

There are two main questions here, for both the medical and health community and breast cancer survivors wanting their own children: 1) Do certain breast cancer treatments affect fertility?; and 2) Is it actually considered safe to conceive and carry a baby to term following breast cancer and breast cancer treatments? As far as fertility goes, there is no definite answer here. For chemotherapy, it depends on the age and what specific drug was used, some affect fertility more than others. And taking tamoxifen after chemotherapy to prevent recurrence is not recommended if the woman desires to become pregnant right away. Although tamoxifen is sometimes used as a fertility treatment, there is evidence to suggest that it damages developing embryos, and therefore is not considered safe to use. Many doctors caution these women to wait several years to ensure receiving the best breast cancer treatment possible and to go past the point of the biggest threat of breast cancer recurrence. But some women decide to go ahead and have babies anyway, since it’s so important to them.

How to properly handle abuse and talks of divorce in such a hostile situation.

M

en and women deal with a lot of abuse in the family. But unlike any form of domestic violence, emotional abuse is the strongest yet the most subtle of all. It is too subtle that sometimes even the abused partner does not notice it. This kind of abuse leaves no identifying physical evidence, yet leaves a lasting mark to the abused person’s self esteem.

Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse may be described as subjecting a partner consistently to insult, embarrassment, scorn, shame or hurt. Emotional abuse may manifest itself in many different forms: from something as simple as mocking a partner for their beliefs or faith, or telling them nobody wants or likes them; to something as demeaning as telling a partner that he’s worthless; to the extent of threatening to hurt a partner or their family. People subjected to emotional abuse are constantly accused and criticized, and often faulted for every little thing they do. Domineering partners use emotional abuse to control, degrade, humiliate, or punish a partner to submission. This is comparable to how prison guards manipulate prisoners of war being cooperative. They use isolation to cut off any form of external support from friends and family, making victims dependent to the abusers. Abusers also use threats and intimidation to force a partner to submis-

sion. Abusive partners use negative criticism to demean a partner about his appearance, actions, and abilities. Victims of emotional abuse often manifest the following symptoms:

This is when the incident is forgotten. The relationship is at peace, and no abuse is being done to the victim. Resolving emotional abuse

.Depression. .Fearfulness .Withdrawal. .Social isolation .Suicidal tendency .Feeling of guilt and shame Because partners are constantly exposed to ideas of being worthless, they start believing the lies over time and tend to develop low self-esteem and eventually develop the symptoms mentioned above. Abusive relationships usually cycle around 4 phases:

Phase 1, tension building. This is when the tension begins, communication starts falling apart, and the victim feels an intense need to please or placate an abuser.

Phase 2, incident. This is when the actual verbal and emotional abuse happens. The abuser starts getting angry, blaming and arguing with the victim. The abuser threatens and intimidates the victim.

Phase 3, reconciliation. This is when the abuser apologizes for what he’s said and done. He passes the blame onto the victim, denying any abuse he’s done, or says that what he did wasn’t that bad as the victim thinks it is.

18 Urban Parenting Magazine |

Phase 4, calm.

In a relationship, both partners should learn to say when enough is enough. An abusive environment is never good for both parties, especially for the children. Children who grew up in an abusive domestic environment tend to carry this behavior when he has his own family. As parents, it is necessary to work on resolving emotional abuse issues as early as possible before it destroys the entire family. Of course it is natural for an emotionally abusive partner to decline to undergo counseling, denying the fact the he is subjecting his partner to such abuse. However, for the good of everybody in the family, certain steps must be taken to stop the abuse. Counseling. Both partners need to talk to a trusted therapist or counsellor to discuss the origin or the reason behind the abusive behavior. Counseling also helps regain trust, confidence, and self-esteem. Trial separation. Some time away from each other to understand the importance of each partner in the relationship is sometimes helpful to make the abuser aware of his mistakes. Divorce . If an abusive partner refuses to acknowledge the fact that he is manipulating and taking advantage of his partner,it is time to let go of the relationship and start life anew. Love is supposed to help us grow, not trap us like a prisoner. If you feel like you’re being boxed in by an abusive partner, speak up. It is never ok to let yourself be subjected to so much abuse. It is not advisable to immediately jump into a divorce, try to work it out first. With the right help, you might still be able to rebuild a happy married life.

OMG! Breast

Cancer!?

We hear it all the time? You’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical o their well-being and ultimately their life expectancy. Well here are 8 things EVERY woman should know!

I

always advocate self-care as the first step in preventing and treating health challenges. When it comes to breast health, the importance of self-care is a message I can’t share often enough. It is great to see pink ribbons everywhere in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! If I had my wish, every pink ribbon would carry an additional important message for women. That message would read “You can improve your breast health and reduce the risk of breast cancer right now with a few simple lifestyle changes.” We may not be able to control where we live or our genetic risk factors- it’s true. However, a growing body of research is showing us that women really can make a difference in their breast health through diet, exercise, and weight management.

We need to emphasize that everyone should be focusing on what we can control not what we can’t. - We can evaluate our hormone levels with a saliva test. The best way for premenopausal and postmenopausal women to know if their bodies have an imbalance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone is to do a saliva test. Saliva Testing is the most accurate and easy way to this. - We can use bio-identical hormones if we need hormone supplementation. Bio Identical means that the molecular structure of the hormones identically match the hormones made by our body as opposed to Pregnant Mare’s Urine which is natural to horses not humans. - We can change our habits: reduce alcohol consumption and quit smoking.

- We can manage our weight and exercise daily. Studies also show that maintaining a healthy, These simple steps can help optimize your body’s average weight is just as important in favorably hormonal balance and reduce the risk of develop- influencing the estrogen/progesterone ratio. hand, obesity, high insulin levels, alcohol intake, smoking, oral contraceptives, hormones from meat and meat products, pesticides, and herbicides can swing this ratio in the wrong direction.

“...women really can make a difference in their breast health through diet, exercise, and weight management.”

- We can do BSE’s- breast self exams becoming more familiar with our own body - We can become better informed - read Dr. John Lee’s “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer” as a start.

- We can eat a balanced diet choosing Eat organic to avoid pesticides, herbicides, and estrogens in meat and dairy products. Include one to three servings of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and cabbage in your diet each day. Studies show that Indole 3 Carbinol the active ingredient helps balance estrogen levels. - We Can supplement wisely with EFA’s, essential fatty acids and use a fruit and vegetable concentrate if you do not eat 5 - 8 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Just for dad dressing up as a fireman, policeman, soldier, fighter pilot, sailor, etc. But just one caveat, though. If you’re planning on attending a Halloween party with a group of other guys, make sure you’re not going to appear as The Village People. Pop Culture- Pop culture has recently given us a lot more choices for great costumes. You can opt to go dressed as a Survivor castaway, with some dirt smeared on your face, sandals, and swimming trunks. This is probably one of the easiest costumes you can assemble. You can also go dressed as Austin Powers, who seems never to go out of style. All you need is a velvet suit, ruffled shirt, pointy leather boots or shoes, and lots of colorful accessories to make an appearance as the shaggadelic man of Mystery. The Man of Steel is also back in business as one of the preferred costumes, with the recent return of the latest installment in the series.

Get Involved Dad! Costume ideas just for YOU! Let’s face it; Halloween was much simpler when we were just kids. I mean, you could just dress up as a clown or a ghost, and won’t have to worry about other people laughing at you. Now, it’s a whole different idea. You have to find a costume that would look sexy, scary, or funny enough without making you look stupid, especially when you’re with the ladies. When Halloween comes around and you need a costume for a party, for the office, or for the kids who will be sure to come trick-or-treating, just follow these great costume ideas for men, and you’ll be sure to get noticed without being laughed at. Men in Uniform- It’s not a big secret that women can go nuts over a man in uniform. Just ask the several other guys you meet who are wearing firemen, police, and soldier costumes. Dressing up in uniform is a great way to appear attractive and masculine. Uniforms always make great costumes, whether you’re

22 Urban Parenting Magazine |

Sports- Another good costume idea is to go and dress up as your favorite athlete. Don’t worry if you don’t really know how to play the game; that’s not the point here. Whether it’s baseball, football, basketball, or any other favorite sport, you can choose from lots of favorite sports icons to imitate. It would be a sure-fire hit, especially if some of the women arrive dressed up in one of those sexy tennis outfits or cheerleader uniforms. And don’t forget wrestling. You can have fun dressed up as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, or any other well-known wrestler. It would be more fun if you can also imitate the way they talk and move. Construction Worker- believe it or not, a lot of women go for those muscular, sweaty men they walk by everyday in building sites, even if they won’t admit it. Wearing a tight pair of jeans, a white tank top or t-shirt, a construction hat and a tool belt will complete your get-up. There are lots more of great costume ideas for men. You can either go out and visit costume shops, or you can browse the Internet. The latter is particularly convenient and practical. Lots of great costume shops online have a wide selection of costumes and accessories at very affordable prices.
