Just For Moms: Picking The Perfect Swimsuit For Summer

I

t’s bathing suit season again and while the thought may send some women screaming and running for the hills there is hope in finding the perfect swimsuit to show off your assets. The right swimsuit is a vital staple in your wardrobe and it’s important to remember that swimsuits are not sized like most clothing. In fact, you should try one to two sizes larger than your normal clothing size. Even if you are hesitant to go up a size, don’t get caught up in the number. The right fit is what counts. When you find a suit that you like, lift your arms, bend over, sit down, and walk around to make sure it is not going to gather or ride up. With so many styles of swimsuits on the market, it is important to take note of what works for your body and what does not. For example, when shopping

for a tankini, make sure the stomach portion of the suit lies flat against your stomach but is not too tight. If it is too tight, your stomach will bulge causing more harm than good. And when choosing patterns, remember that vertical stripes are more flattering than horizontal stripes. In fact, striped patterns with different sized lines look the best. BOTTOMS UP When trying on a swimsuit bottom, make sure your skin is not bulging from the waist or leg area. If it does, again, try going up a size. If the problem is still there, consider a different style bottom. In general, a bottom with a leg opening an inch below the hip bone is the most flattering. Remember, bottoms stretch when they get wet. Make sure the bottom fits snug enough where it won’t look droopy when it’s wet. Boy shorts do not disguise

hips, large bums, or large thighs ñ in reality they only accentuate your problem areas. Get a Supportive and Stylish Lift If you are looking for a top with an underwire, it should fit like your best fitting bra. The underwire should lie flat against your skin without any breast sneaking out of the bottom. For most ladies, side cleavage is an issue. Starting at your underarm, æ of the breast should be covered. And for large busts, a halter top or an underwire top provides the best support and coverage. Halter tops with a wider band provide the most support. When it comes to swimsuits, cleavage isn’t everything. Most women like to emphasize their bust, but over-padding is not the answer. Steer clear of large, push-up pads. The foam holds water like a sponge and tends to pull the top down resulting in a saggy look that is not attractive.

If you want to add a little extra padding to your top, choose a thin pad that looks natural. Most pads can be cut to fit any style top. To prevent the pad from slipping, insert the pads into the lining of the top or sew the pads into the top. Hide Your Tummy: Styles that focus the eye in other places are best. Try a printed top with a solid pant. Also, try a one piece that is slimming in the torso or that will move the eyes toward the bust line. Tankinis also work great at hiding your tummy.

Things Your Kids Can Do Instead of Watching the Television

’mon, admit it. You sometimes use the television set as a cheap

babysitter. That’s ok...we ALL do it sometimes! Ah, but it’s a double-edged sword, because kids who watch a lot of TV have trouble keeping themselves entertained, which in the long run makes your job harder! If you’re trying to limit the TV viewing in your household, you might need a little inspiration. Try these TV-free activities guaranteed to keep the kids busy... at least for a little while!

1) Design paper airplanes

Warning: This one is highly addictive! Buy them a book on the fine arts of paper airplane making, snuggle up or kick your feet up and read the book together. 2) Tower of Pea-sa Peas are good for something- have fun making a tower using toothpicks and peas. Go ahead- encourage them to play with their food! 3) Make homemade ice cream Put two parts milk and cream and one part sugar in a coffee can, with any flavorings you want. Put the lid on, then put it in a bigger can and pour ice around the little can. Put rock salt on the ice. Put a lid on the big can, and give it to your child to roll it back and forth for about 1/2 hour or until it turns into ice cream! (Do this one even if it’s winter...I won’t tell!) 4) Magnet Treasure Hunt: Give them a magnet and instruct them to run it all over the house and see what they find. 5) Home-Sweet-Castle: If you have bunk beds, put blankets around it and make a castle. Encourage your children to play, use their imagination, and save you from the fire breathing dragon! 6) Play First Family Savings and Loan Save your cancelled checks and fake credit cards that come in the mail. Then, supply the kids with a calculator, pencils, and Monopoly money. Let your child ball out of control as the household billionaire! 7) Build a mini log cabin with twigs 8) Have a tic-tac-toe tournament 9) Make your own soda. (A white rock, a feather, a red leaf, a penny, etc) Tell them an exciting booty awaits when they bring all the items to you. 13) Make a cave inside the house Put old blankets over the backs of chairs or over a table to make a tent. Grab a flashlight and instruct child to go read scary stories inside it.

Red, White, and Blue: America, our Home. Celebrating our nation’s birthday is about far more than barbecue, homemade ice tea and fireworks. It is our job, as parents to teach and instill in our children what it truly means to be patriotic. Since September 11, 2001 Independence Day for the United States on July 4th has been especially poignant. While there has been a surge in patriotism, we all need to maintain a sense of pride and love for our country whether we are at war or in a time of peace. Children need to feel a sense of belonging too, in their family, their classrooms and in their country. They will thrive in an environment of respect, compassion and stability. If we as parents teach our kids to love, honor, show compassion and respect for their country as well as for their fellow man, they will not only be graced by a sense of patriotism, they will become better citizens, and in turn role models for our future generations. One of our greatest challenges as parents is to raise our children to be honorable and respectful adults. Adopting a path of patriotism is a good reinforcement for them to show honor and a sense of ethics. Our babies learn kindness at first from our gentle touch; they also learn self-esteem

by our praise and respect. They mostly learn these living examples from their parents and at school. We are responsible for teaching them to respect and be kind to others, regardless of our differences. We are also responsible for teaching them to keep their community clean, and to trust that their country will defend and protect them as best it can. I truly believe they should be taught to revere their country’s flag and all it stands for as well. Children should be taught that, while it might be “legal” to burn their country’s flag as an expression of individual freedom, they would be hard-pressed to get this past Mom and Dad if they ever entertained the idea! This is the posture that a good parent should adopt. Children need to know they are a very large and integral part of their country’s make up. They are the future parents and member of government that will uphold the morals and ethics inherited

from their parents and grandparents. Is it too much to ask that our children be patriotic, actively show patriotism, honor their flag, and stand up for what’s right and good about their country? I don’t think so. It is our job to instill a sense of honor and patriotism in their young hearts, offering them the opportunity to love and honor their country and its flag. In doing so, their actions will be seen as a good example for their country to show mankind and the world. As much as we want our children to love their country, we also need to recognize the importance of global relationships in today’s world. Setting good examples of patriotism should, in turn, teach our kids that every person counts, no matter where they live, or who they might be, or what country they represent.

Often, as parents we are too quick to label our kids as shy when if fact it could be something much more. Your child could be emotionally withdrawn.

arents may not be fully aware of what is happening to their children’s and their everyday activities. After coming home from work, parents usually do some household chores and prepare themselves for dinner, while their kids do their homework after arriving from school. Conversations would usually begin at dinner time, asking them questions about how their day at school was. Kids may share their quirky experiences to their parents, but teenagers would seldom do the same. Adolescents would rather keep the details to themselves, and just share random events from their school. Many parents may be

unaware but high school life may be found by their children to be quite a challenge. Peer acceptance is critical for most teenagers. In campus, they have opportunities to build new friendships. For some teens, school is also about facing up to the difficulties of bullying. Other students from school or even their so called “friends� could tease and bully them by saying negative things about them in front of many people. Sadly, this scenario is considered as normal for people their age. At this stage, your children may be emotionally sensitive and choose to remain secretive about the issues and situations that they face in school.

In case one of your children is having difficulty sharing stories, opening up, or is showing symptoms of depression --- that child may be having problems with selfesteem. It is not uncommon for teenagers to experience a form of inferiority complex since the adolescent years are really about establishing self-identity and building their own sense of self-worth. They may also have feelings of resentment, alienation, and unhappiness. These are only some of the reasons why children hesitate to share their experiences to their parents and other adults. For parents who think that their children might be suffering from an inferiority complex, it is best to see and know the signs that your child may be experiencing. Your child knows what they are capable of, as well as their shortcomings. Bullying tends to point such negativity into the young adult, and perceives any form of criticism as a personal

Always remember that everyone is unique in this world, and individuality is best in leading a good and happy life.

f you have a swimming pool and a child, then safety has to be at the top of your priorities. This is especially true if you have a large swimming pool, which should be gated to prevent your little one from wandering into the water. It may also be necessary to place a lock on the gate in order to prevent a child from gaining access to the swimming pool area.

Most small children love to splash around in a kiddie pool, which is very small and made of a strong plastic material. Specially designed for toddlers, these swimming pools are seemingly safe for play. However, if left unat-

tended, any situation can turn into a dangerous one for your child. Therefore, any time that your toddler is in or near a swimming pool, whether big or small, make sure that you are with them. When it comes to swimming pool safety, it is equally as important to maintain the pool’s cleanliness and water quality. Regular maintenance would include sweeping the pool of any debris and possibly even hiring a swimming pool attendant to stop by and make sure that the area is properly cleaned. Every swimming pool needs to have it’s water cleaned and also changed regularly to avoid any bacteria or other harmful buildup. When you or your family are swimming, you want to make sure that the water is as clean as possible. A regular checkup of the swimming pool filter, if you have one, is also a necessary part of this process. An important part of swimming pool safety is also making sure that you or your children wear the proper water attire, including ear plugs to avoid excessive water in the ears and possibly even inflatable safety gear to help stay afloat. If you plan to spend a lot of time outside in the swimming pool, apply sunblock in order to lessen the damaging effects of the sun.

Children can drown in an inch of water, yet parents can prevent water accidents by teaching their children safety steps when playing in or near pools, the beach, lakes, or other areas of water.”

REMEMBER- always use floating devices for kids 5 & under as they learn how to swim.

At the very least, a nasty sunburn can be uncomfortable. In the most severe cases, it may require medication or may eventually lead to skin cancer if exposure continues. In many instances, families prefer to purchase a swimming pool cover in order to keep bugs and debris out of the water. This is helpful, but the water must still be cleaned properly and maintained just as if a cover hadn’t been applied. A swimming pool cover is terrific for overnight use and it will definitely help to keep the bugs at bay.

Ways To Lose Stubborn Baby Weight

as many of these tips to your daily routine, and you will surely be well on the way to a slimmer, healthier you. We don’t get fat ”overnight” so you should expect it to take a certain amount of time to lose that weight again, but don’t give up! Persistence, Determination and Grit they should be your new best friends. Remember, these tips work if you stick to your plan! 1. Eliminate one tablespoon of fat a day and you will lose 10 pounds in a year. 2. Avoid strange fad diets if you can’t eat that way for the rest of your life, don’t waste your time or your health. 3. Limit alcohol consumption - each serving contains 100 to 150 calories.

4. Eat fruit at least twice a day. 5. Keep a food diary about your food choices, indicating how hungry you are each time you eat. Pay particular attention to your level of hunger when you snack. 6. Perform aerobic exercise a minimum of 30 minutes three times a week. Log this on your food diary. Aerobic means any exercise that increases your breathing and heart rate. Walking is fine! Do only what you can to begin with. If you have other health problems, consult your doctor before embarking on any strong physical exercise. 7. Gradually increase the length and frequency of your workouts.

8. Workout while you’re watching TV or sitting on the couch. Simple legs kick can help make a difference. 9. Weigh yourself no more than twice a week. And do it in the morning after going to the bathroom- it’s the most accurate reading. 10. Give yourself a break with a small sweet or salty reward for every 5 pounds lost. 11. Slow down your eating speed, make meals last at least 20 minutes. Try eating with the other hand or taking a sip of water between bites.

12. Bring your lunch to work at least three times a week. 13. Start to strength train twice a week as your fitness improves. Building muscle increases your metabolism and forces your body to use fat, not muscle, when you’re cutting back on calories. Cut down on carbohydrates and stick to lean white meat and fish, and you will notice vast improvements here. 14. Stop eating while watching television. 15. Have someone else put away leftovers. 16. Buy a good low-fat, low-calorie cookbook or magazine subscription.
