Baroque n Roll Cover Story Here we are at Issue 7 already, where has the time gone? I guess they do say time flies when you’re having fun. I have to admit, putting this issue together has been the most fun to date. We worked on two amazing photoshoots, including our cover shoot with our stars flying in from L.A and our Private Party shoot which really did get us all in the mood to have a few glasses of champers. In this issue we introduce some talented new writers, my personal favourite would have to be Emma Creen who writes about 1920’s fashion in a forward thinking way. The usual favourites are back including our for and against articles where this month our writers debate dogs in the fashion industry, who will you agree with? You will also notice that this issue is our BIGGEST yet, with more pages of fashionable inspiration to kick start your festive shopping. So what else has been going on at Urban Coco HQ? Claire Baxter Claire Baxter studied Fine Art with film and performance at Central St Martins in London before completing her degree there in Fashion (with print) in 2008. She has worked with John Galliano and Dior in Paris, Jeremy Scott in Los Angeles and as an events stylist for The Zoo Project in Ibiza. Also working on projects with Christian Audigier, Elisa Palomino and Eley Kishimoto among others. Claire Baxter is opening the Leeds Fashion Show at the town Hall this Month. “It is such an iconic building and as I’m from Leeds originally it’s an honour for me to have been asked to open the show there”. Can you tell us about the collection you are showing? “Its called ‘These are Hard times for dreamers’. Its 12 looks and focuses on digital prints that I have designed and highly intricate embellishments. I took inspiration from pole dancers, playboy bunnies and showgirls and used a paired down colour pallet of monochrome and red, it’s kind of tongue–in-cheek. Trend Reports Tis the season to be earthy Print trends this season have an ethnic edge. Tribal, animal and Aztec influences are awash over everything from suit jackets to bangles. Organic browns, deep reds and earth tones are the most popular colours, although brights have their place too. A purple haze descended on the Autumn ‘12 international shows in each of the major cities and we love the drama that purple evokes. Equestrian is a look that requires tailored and nipped in tweed jackets, tight fitting jodhpurs or trousers, white shirts and polished leather riding boots. UC

TheLatest Trend or Man’s Best Friend when people think of animals in fashion

the immediate image that springs to mind is of little handbag dogs being carried around by Paris Hilton. Since then the craze has just exploded and now, for the first time, a canine class system has started to emerge. There are the dogs who jump in muddy puddles, sleep outside and gasp..go out without any clothes on. And there are the dogs, usually of a smaller variety, who dash around London Fashion Week getting fussed over by fashionistas and having pampering sessions at Toni & Guy between shows. Something about seeing a cute dog in a handbag or sporting a designer doggy coat sparks outrage in some people and just triggers looks of disdain from others, but as long as they are still being walked and loved and fed properly I will quite openly admit that I think it is just the most adorable thing. However people are very wary of condoning this kind of pet treatment because it can be considered ‘humanisation’ of the animal which is supposedly cruel. But if humanisation is cruel, then is it not wrong to treat our pets like a member of our families? Including removing their desire to hunt by feeding them ourselves and keeping them in the house instead of outdoors?

campaigns, as is the same with many other big labels. There are also a growing number of pet modelling agencies which some deem ‘overstepping the mark’. So I spoke to Joy, the owner of a beautiful little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel about where she thinks the line is between love and objectification of the animal. “There is a line and it’s hard to define.” She explained. “A woman on Real Housewives of New York City has a Chihuahua and she dresses it to match herself. It never walks, she just carries it around and treats it like a little object. That’s the line, I think.” “When she was quite young I started making steps to sign her to a modelling agency, because she’s so pretty and I thought it would be quite fun. Small dogs like her are expensive to look after too, so the money could really help with the cost of the animals.” Joy doesn’t like to go overboard with Charley the spaniel and only dresses her in winter when it’s practical. So she only has two coats and one cardigan. However Joy does enjoy dressing her up because it’s sweet and not something to be taken seriously. As long as they’re looked after properly and loved, I just don’t see what the harm is in a little silliness and fun. Taste..now that’s another debate entirely*. *see Real Housewives of New York City. Fashion. Dogs. Dogs. Fashion.

I don’t know about you but they’re not really two things that I’d put together. Unless of course I was buying a novelty birthday card for my brother who has a penchant for comedy dog pictures. I’m not going to even go into the use of animals for fashion, that’s a discussion for another time. What I am concerned about is animals being used for handbags accessories like they’re mobile phone charms (remember them?). I just don’t get it; I thought dogs were supposed to walk? For animals to be doing their own thing out in the world? Isn’t this why you’re meant to be able to prove you’ll be around to walk them twice a day? Or why we call it wildlife? Fashion works in seasons and trends. We can all accept that. Of course whether we choose to follow said seasons and trends is a personal choice. It seems that even handbag critters have fads. In 2009 it was all about African pygmy hedgehogs and more recently micro pigs had their day but the all prevailing handbag accessory is the mini dog. Maybe they’re just easier to source? I think the most embarrassing thing about this whole ‘craze’ is that it was ultimately popularised by Paris Hilton. Even I feel too old to remember the time when she was actually a credible celebrity idol. The

popularity of ‘teacup’ dogs seems to be ever growing and I don’t understand why thinking something is cute means you need to put it in a bag…is this just me? The most recent animal

fashion phase is dying the dog’s fur ludicrous colours such as turquoise or pink; let’s hopes its nontoxic. The big question here is; why?! Fashion for fashions sake? Can’t argue with that. If they’re not dying them, they’re painting them; I’ve seen a golden retrievers coat painted up so that it looks like a tiger. Don’t people get pets so that they get out more? One place where fashion and dogs collide and at least get to walk was at New York fashion week

during many dog fashion shows. Designer and homemade ensembles were paraded down the dogwalk (of course) with the aim of winning their owners a prize. I must say, when my twin sister sent me a newspaper clipping many moons ago of a dog in a scuba diving outfit I did laugh and I’m sure most people have seen the picture on the internet of the dog dressed in an outfit that makes it look like two dogs carrying a gift. One off dress ups are fine…I think. Hey, my two baby nephews are continually dressed in comedy accessories without their consent (they’re going to hate us when they’re older). My problem I suppose lies with the dog becoming a fashion accessory rather than them wearing fashion accessories. Take this problem to the extreme and just take a quick look at China; key rings with live animals inside them. Yep, that’s not an exaggeration, they are definitely alive. The question is for how long? Turtles, lizards and fish placed within sealed bags with a chain attached. Whilst I don’t think this argument needs pushing to the Nth degree because readers, I know you’ve got some brain cells to rub together, but you’ve got to wonder where it’ll all end. DE

his month’s cover stars He Met Her, arrived for the shoot after flying in from L.A. The avid selfproducers, Rocky and Mowgli, arrived on location oozing with style and with sparkles in their eyes. They were recently in London for fashion week where they donned front rows and got fashionistas talking not only for their quirky dress sense, but because of their eclectic music sounds. We find out what makes them tick, where their strong connection comes from and the question on everybody’s lips – are they romantically connected?

You could just feel their energy, who they were, what they could produce.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years time? Hopefully playing big arenas and having an awesome live light and art installation for people to enjoy! Having our music reach mass audiences that all feel like they can relate to us & our moods is where we want to be. That is if we are not in a post apocalyptic world, riding bikes & rocking shot guns. You clearly have a passionate connection, have you ever dated? It’s funny, we get boyfriend/girlfriend, brother/sister, even twins! So it’s fair to say we have a strong connection. We get each other on more levels than that but we’ve never actually dated. It’s more like soul best friends. For any other artists trying to crack the music industry, what advice would you offer? Cut the bullshit. People and fans can smell it. It’s important to stay true to your art and have fun doing it, creating it is the best part and sharing it is the reward! Put out good energy & good energy will return. To date, what has been your career highlight? We’ve been super lucky to have experienced a lot of cool stuff already and it’s even more exciting to feel like it’s just beginning. One highlight has to be when we played at a festival in Cardiff last summer. It was so cool to be playing for thousands of people outdoors, with a carnival happening all around you. The sunset and the confetti feel of it was just surreal. We can’t wait to do more festivals.

If you weren’t pursuing a career in music, what else do you think you would be doing? We’d probably both be involved in the fashion world or maybe writers but who knows, maybe we would be Acrobats in the circus! During London Fashion week, you were the guys of the moment. Do you like to follow fashion? We both had such a blast during fashion week. There is this buzz that’s exciting to be involved in. We portray our moods through what we wear all the time and our image is super special for us, so totally we follow fashion. But we don’t need to make the biggest hoohaw about it either, branding is not the most important factor. It’s all about personal choice of style, wearing things you really like and want to exhibit regardless of the brand name. Outside of music, what do you like to get up to? We like to get into fun/weird/interesting situations. We love dancing, especially a dance style called tr∆pping and movie watching is definitely way up there for us. T

hink of the 1920s, and the first thing that springs to mind is the unadulterated glamour of the era; feathers, fringing, metallic, sequins and beads, in the iconic drop-waisted flapper girl silhouette, all of which represents an attitude of champagnedrenched fun, frivolity and freedom. This spelt a revolutionary, unprecedented break from the dual restrictions of corsets and the Edwardian moral code that came before, the impact of which is easy to underestimate today. All of this makes the flapper girl, in both her style and her attitude, the ultimate party season icon, and Daisy Buchanan, the tragic heroine of Fitzgerald’s classic jazz age novel The Great Gatsby, is the high priestess. With Gatsby now being made into a hotly anticipated Hollywood film, from the makers of the likes of Moulin Rouge, interest in the 1920s is at an all-time high. But while the book is a tale of the tragically hopeless elements of the era, highlighting the meaninglessness and despair that is masked by a superficially glamorous lifestyle, the fashion world is focusing on the pure, poetic joy of the newlyliberated women of the jazz age, and most importantly, their decadent attire.

The hype surrounding Gatsby is proof that often the trends that most inspire people are those that capture a mood, a philosophy, a way of life, rather than those that are merely directly copied from the catwalks.

Not that the 1920s have been entirely absent from designers’ collections of late – the Gucci SS12 show was all about flapper-style dresses adorned with Art Deco-inspired panelling, and a gold and black palette that embraced the sparkle of sequins and the loudness of fringing, whilst keeping the overall look sleek and sophisticated with overtones of dark, Gothic glamour. The luxe embellishment trend that was all over the AW12 catwalks incorporates elements of 1920s style, with its emphasis on adorning every item with gems and jewels, whilst keeping lines clean and sophisticated, and above all ensuring that the outfit is easy to move around in. This is a priority for the flapper girl – at the same time as working her iconic look, she must remain uninhibited by her outfit to go about her business of gin-drinking and Charleston-dancing. The subtle tribal fringing that featured in the SS13 collections was another nod to the jazz age, suggesting that no matter what the season, the spirit of the 1920s remains ever-present. But it is during the Christmas season, with so many parties to attend, that 21st century girls can really embrace the look, which is currently readily available on the high street. Everywhere from Biba and Phase 8 to ASOS and Monsoon has a range of glam flapper-inspired dresses, complete with feather and sequin adornments. The key to making the trend work in 2012, and avoid looking like you’ve raided a fancy dress shop (albeit a very chic one) is by pairing a full-on flapper dress with minimal accessories, or by adding subtle 1920s touches to your usual outfit – accessories such as headbands, faux fur stoles and statement Decostyle earrings will help you to subtly channel the vibe. This is the beauty of Gatsby style – even when done in an understated manner, for fullfrontal, unabashed, spectacular opulence, the thrill of 1920s glamour remains unrivalled.

1 Apply Organic Golden Camellia Oil, which acts as a primer, to the eye lids. This gives a shimmering glow and provides a base for the rest of the makeup.


2 The next step is apply red eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye and work towards the centre. We have used the popular Dazzle Dust from Barry M

3 On top of the red, you then need to blend deep purple eyeshadow from Illamasqua in to the outer corner of the eye.

4 Apply green eyeshadow from Illamasqua to the brow bone

5 Using a liner brush mix Illamasqua Sealing Gel with Sun Yellow eyeshadow from Barry M across the lid

6 Repeat the above but this time mix the Sealing Gel with cosmic blue eyeshadow and apply along the water line

7 Using Sublime De Chanel mascara (ÂŁ23.00), complete the look by adding that little extra length to the lashes.

And we’ve found a gem of a place where you can truly unwind, relax, and re-energise in luxurious and tranquil surroundings. Nestled on the edge of the stunning Malvern Hills in Worcestershire lies The Malvern, a spa complex which combines a national award-winning spa, health club, holistic therapies, fine dining and fabulous overnight accommodation under one roof while still retaining a contemporary boutique feel. Warm and attentive staff greeted us on arrival

This month we visited what can only be described as an Oasis in a frantic world set in the Malvern HIlls.

and showed us to our room, giving us the sense that we would be well looked after. The bedroom itself had a beautiful spacious feel with white walls and high ceilings. After settling in, we went to explore the facilities which were extensive. A state-of-the-art gym had built in TV screens and iPod docking stations. After discovering the restaurant and brasserie, we went on to find the spa itself. The hydrotherapy pool is one of a kind, 20 metres long and 35 degrees C, with indoor and outdoor areas and, we were informed, even filled with the world famous Malvern Spring Water. There were 4 different heat


rooms including a Salt Grotto, Crystal Steam Room, Herb Sauna and Kelo Sauna. The Salt Grotto had salt steam which I am told is good for the respiratory system. The Herb Sauna gave a gentler heat than the dry heat traditionally found in a standard sauna, and the Kelo Sauna is made from fragrant wood.Luckily we were visiting on a warm evening so we took the opportunity to go in the outside pool area. We laid back in the 35 degrees C waters and took in the breathtaking view of the Malvern Hills, moments of pure bliss! The pool is a complete experience in itself, fed by the Malvern Springs and with areas of different water jet arrangements including a hydrotherapy ‘bed’. You can easily spend over an hour enjoying and exploring all the different elements which stimulate the body from tip to toe. The Grand Salon is an impressive area where all the treatments take place. The building itself has a sense of light and space, with decor reminiscent of Mediterranean culture. The lounge was complete with exotic water fountains, olive trees and a grand stone fireplace. After a long, enjoyable day in the sumptuous spa, we dressed and headed to the restaurant. This offers a fine dining experience, with a thoughtfully designed menu, fully stocked bar and a good choice of wines. Waking from a sound sleep, the next morning we headed to the Brasserie for breakfast. There was a great selection to choose from, from yoghurts and cereals with fruit juices through to hot food including a full English Breakfast.

Later on after a relaxing swim, we headed to the Grand Salon. I chose the REN Moroccan Rose Ritual. The treatment room was decorated with dark woods and candles, and the friendly therapist took time to ask how I would like my massage. First, I had a scrub with Moroccan scrub oil followed by a full body massage. Finally, rose body cream is applied all over the body to leave skin feeling silky smooth and revitalised. The luxurious REN treatment is designed to leave you literally ‘smelling of roses’ and I have to say, I truly did! It was a wonderful experience and left me feeling genuinely indulged. The Malvern clearly has a loyal following of dedicated customers ranging across all ages. Many treatments cost less than £40, meaning affordability without sacrificing luxury. A Week in the Lifestyleof At Urban Coco we are inspired by driven people in business, who strive to get to the top of their careers. Our showcase takes you behind the scenes of a week in their life. This month we meet Julian Kynaston creator of the leading cosmetics brand Illamasqua.

E

agerly anticipating the arrival of Julian Kynaston, we waited with baited breath in the board room of his agency, Propaganda. Upon arriving, Julian demanded our attention with his strong demeanour and immediately we knew this Yorkshire man meant business. Charismatic, charming and not afraid to speak his mind, we had the pleasure of finding out more about what this friendly giant gets up to in his working life. He talked about his football hooliganism days paired with been a Goth and having to fight prejudice head on leading to the launch of his already successful beauty brand, Illamasqua. Illamasqua arrived with a difference to other beauty brands. For one, it was created with Julian previously having no experience in the cosmetics industry. Launching at the time that Blogging was going big, Illamasqua stamped their arrival with a punk/rock fusion event with David Vanian from the Damned. This was a clear way to get people talking! We find out where he progressed with the brand as we shadow a week in the life of Julian Kynaston.

MONDAY : Julian is a seasoned marketer who loves what he does and isn’t in it for the money. He believes Illamasqua are the anarchists of cosmetics. Sitting with his team for a weekly catch up on the brand, the week starts off by discussing the latest face of the campaign. When he arrived to meet us he had just finished a call with one of the brand’s biggest fans and customers, Courtney Love. It’s a private brand and Julian does not want any celebrities to advertise it and confirms that he has a celebrity following but refuses to pay them to promote his brand. The latest face for the brand is a girl from Leeds called Georgia. TUESDAY : Julian works closely with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. The Illamasqua brand was setting out to build a brand which would empower women to wear makeup louder and prouder than ever before and for men to wear makeup beyond the cliché of eyeliner. Somewhere else Sophie Lancaster was killed for being a Goth. Murdered for the way she chose to look and live her life. It felt natural for


Julian to work with Sophie’s mum Sylvia to help build the charity and spread the message to Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere ( S.O.P.H.I.E). He takes time out of his busy schedule to promote this wherever he goes. Julian has produced a short film for the charity with a free soundtrack which was played by MTV. wEDNESDAY : Julian admits he can’t switch off from work. Looking back over his career he tells us about all the holidays he missed out on because he was too dedicated to his brands. Half way through his busy week and Julian has been awake since 2am taking calls from America ahead of his international travel plans later in the week to keep his eye on the international growth of the brand.. THURSDAY : Almost at the weekend and today sees Julian in London talking with his business partners about their own personal investments in to the business and what return they are going to see. Julian admits that they are facing

challenging times ahead which will stretch the private wealth of him and the other partners but he is happy to look failure in the eye in order to move on and expand.. FRIDAY : Although the weekend is around the corner, it’s time for Julian to prepare for his next stop in Dubai. Travelling from London to the airport, he has the luxury of his own private driver so that he can continue working right up until he boards his flight. All in all, Julian leads a hectic lifestyle but it’s clear he wouldn’t change it for the world. When finding out about his personal life it was nice to see he balances his hard core work attitude with a relaxed home life which consists of horse riding, walking and visiting one of his stunning houses in his picturesque hometown of Huddersfield.. HARVEY NICHOLS AUTUMN-WINTER FASHION SHOW October saw luxury department store Harvey Nichols showcase their AutumnWinter 2012 collection at a glamorous fashion show held in the iconic Victoria Quarter. Packed with members of the press, fashion bloggers and Yorkshire’s most stylish, Harvey Nichols transformed the VQ arcade into a romantic gothic runway. The evening began with guests being greeted with a chic and sparkling drinks reception.. The show visited four main looks; the first being ‘Dark Decadence,’ this was then followed with ‘Plethora of Prints’ which embraced a clash of colours.

Next guests were introduced to ‘Winter Warmers’; a showcase for staying fashionable during the colder months and the grand finale encompassed ‘The Riches’ which saw an array of sparkle, embellishment, and opulence from brands such as Catherine Deane, Amanda Wakeley, Issa and Talbot Runhof. Menswear was represented by gentlemen’s eveningwear uniting sharp tailored jackets with patent leather loafers and a jewel colour palette. Ph by Voir

The ‘Dress me Beautiful’ show gave us a diverse array of personality among designers, reflected in their equally diverse collections. At the end of the show, several awards were handed out to the best designers and models. Designer of the Year, sponsored by Accent, was awarded to Allessandra Bersam for her daring use of floral prints in matching pantsuits.
