This month we welcome our new UPRAW writer / model / photography assistant, Ayla Angelos. She has been with us on our usual escapades around the south and we have loved every minute of her joining in! This month I would firstly recommend heading down to Smokin Aces, where you can get the newest edition to the UPRAW cocktails. It’s incredible; I was there when Matt Dutton was making it! Interview with Ben Cuervo for Inncercity Clothing Photography:

Innercity Clothing is a Brand that was founded in 2010 by two guys from Bournemouth and is starting to cause a stir in the UK fashion scene. With their collections displaying unique graphics and slogans that are exquisitely incorporated into street wear, it is becoming a well-known brand that will bring a distinctive style to any wardrobe. We talked to Ben Cuervo, a talented graphic designer and co-founder of Innercity, who tells us about the past, present and future of Innercity Clothing. So Ben, where did it all begin for Innercity? Wayne had the name and I met him through a friend. That’s where Innercity began. It was born out of a mutual love of street wear and design – and with my graphic skills and Wayne’s experience it was a marriage made in heaven. What’s your inspiration? We both get inspiration from what’s happening in all aspects of life, such as: art, music, catwalks, films, sports and we try to keep ideas fresh and original. But we know we have to keep an eye on trendss as that’s what fashion is all about! Also, us making the best product we can and doing what we like is definitely making Innercity stand out. What made you choose the name, Innercity? What about inc81? We used Innercity as it’s something everyone understands. It also has great connotations and it puts images into peoples’ heads. It’s where the rough meets the smooth and every city has one. 1981 was the birth of street wear and hip hop culture and that’s where inc81 came from; it was a street movement that continues to influence fashion and music today. How did you get into clothing and design? I studied graphic design at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth. I stood out pretty bad with all the arty-types, but I learnt a lot. I think it’s all thanks to Wayne really! He’s shown me clothing as an outlet for design, and that’s where Innercity began. It’s a

lifestyle brand – one that’s more than just clothes, so we host parties and try and get really interactive with the customer. It’s emerging with inspiration and it’s more than just clothing sitting in a store. This developed naturally and it has now become an integral part of the brand and in the long run we hope it will make Innercity iconic. Given the large number of street wear brands available in the UK, what is it that sets you apart from the others? What makes us stand out is that we don’t ignore trends; we use them as inspiration and add on our own thing to make it fresh. We’re pretty brave with our designs but the brand is versatile so we can handle it. I’d also describe Innercity as eclectic as we’re not worried about what pigeon hole it goes in to. We are an urban lifestyle brand so there something for everyone Joey Essex is obviously a keen fan of Innercity, as are some other celebrities. Are these the kind of people you like to see wearing Innercity? Yeah, definitely! They’re looked up to by a certain demographic. Celebs make a conscious choice as to what they’re going to wear on television so it’s a huge compliment that they chose to wear Innercity - whatever their scene. It’s great having the likes of Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk calling you up to wear your clothes! There are many different celebs that wear it which shows how diverse the brand is. Most people pay them to wear their clothes but they’re buying ours…that in itself is a compliment! Who’s the biggest celeb you’ve seen wearing the brand? I’d say Pro Green! But there’s been loads of others wearing Innercity which is awesome. What design are you most proud of? The logo, definitely! It’s on the red tabs and it transcends everything. It’s our stamp. We put a lot of thought and effort in to creating it and we hope it stands the test of time.

What’s the most popular with the customers this season? The big picture t-shirt and the pocket t-shirts. The pocket t-shirt, especially, as it’s never been done before. People have done pocket t-shirts, but they haven’t done it how we’ve done it with the bandanna (you can see these on our website inc81.com). What’s next in line for Inncercity? We aim to keep growing and turn our designs into different products like sock, beanies, bags and iPhone covers to name a few. We are also sponsoring some awesome local skaters and entering them into competitions. We hope to carry on making inroads into the skate world as skate boarding is having such a big influence on the UK fashion scene at the moment. It’s great to be able to support the skaters on a local level. Also, we are now going to be doing more drops. Instead of two collections a year we’re now going to do six. This will keep the designs fresh and on trend. Plus, in June we’ll be releasing some more wicked vests and tees for high summer. Watch out for INNERCITY beach party its going be the dopest! Asahi british beach polo championship 2013 – Oakley international beach volleyball

T

he Asahi British Beach Polo Championship to be held at Sandbanks, Poole for its sixth year on the 12/13thJuly 2013 is now only a few weeks away. Supported by some of the best arena polo players, including England’s Jamie Morrison, the hotly anticipated beach festival promises excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be competing with Ireland keen to retain the title after a gripping final against Wales last year. The spectacular floodlit night beach polo on the Friday evening sees the Project Kudos Group and Beau Design teams doing battle. Arena polo is a spectacular spectator sport and played on a stunning Blue Flag beach (preferable sundrenched!) brings the very best out of the players and guests. The thorough bred ponies and high goal players love playing on the beach in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jack Kidd who is a regular for England at the Championships says ‘I have been lucky enough to play polo all round the world – Sandbanks is still one of my favourite weekends of the year. The polo is insanely competitive, the guests are always on great form and the beach party’s well – they are simply the best!’ Oakley International Beach Volleyball The Oakley Sand Slam International Beach Volleyball will again grace the world famous Sandbanks beach compliments of Oakley, Wessex Volleyball & Beach Volleyball UK Ltd. Robin Miedzybrodzki said, ‘this setting stands to be our first competitive match since our split after London 2012. Having played together for so many years we know each other’s game inside and out. Spectators can expect fireworks from Tom Lord and myself as we’re both very proud countrymen’. Both Robin & Tom are a part of the British Olympic Association ‘Rio 2016 Ambitions Athlete Programme’ and have re established themselves with new partners in order to qualify for the Rio Games. Tom Lord who’s currently training in Cyprus said, ‘Rio 2016 is our ultimate focus however it’s some time away so highly competitive matches and the FIVB Tour are essential in building our new partnerships. All this testosterone will need some very strong marshalling, so who better than two time Olympic Finals referee and Director of Beach Volleyball UK ‘Jeff Brehaut’ to manage proceedings. Jeff’s experience in refereeing will be essential to keep a smooth game flow and maintain a calm environment to ensure we see the best of the players and the sport. Tyron Dawkins, Oakley’s brand ambassador and event organiser said, ‘bringing the best Beach Volleyball to Sandpolo 2013 is what we’re all about, these athletes are in outstanding shape and we’re looking forward to see this contest of partnerships’. T

he evening of the 30th May saw the first ‘Thursday Night Ride’ of the year for the guys and girls at Coast. The surf, ride, skate and coffee shop started their every other weekly cycles last summer, when the weather was a little warmer and the sun a little brighter. Previous rides ranged from a trip to Muddeford to visit the Beach Cafe, a ferry crossing over to the Banks Arms and everywhere in between. Starting from their HQ in Poole and more often than not heading out to a local drinking establishment, the crew meet once a week to share their love for bikes, beers and a breezy ride along the promenade and beyond.The idea was to create a non-competitive, social atmosphere for casual rides along the coast where anyone is welcome. The launch for the 2013 ‘Thursday Night Ride’, was a short jaunt to Bournemouth’s favourite seaside and longest standing haunt, Hot Rocks. Although the weather looked like it might take a turn for the worst, sunnies were donned optimistically and the cloud even broke for a few moments along the way. After a few juice cocktails for the ladies and pints for the lads the crew saddled up and headed home to Coast for a man-sized burger, some homemade coleslaw and a few more

beverages. All in all, a good evening spent taking in the local seaside sights. So if you find yourself sat on the sofa every other Thursday night twiddling your thumbs waiting for something interesting to happen on the telly, get on your bike and head to Coast. or those who have never been to Italy, many obvious preconceptions of what it would be like are sometimes limited to what has been viewed on TV or films, and these preconceptions may not be about to change due to limited finances. However, when given the opportunity for a budget trip to the slightly underrated but no less beautiful city of Genoa, it would seem almost too good to pass up. With flights costing a fantastic £30 return with Ryan air and with a pre-decided plan to camp by a lake (apart from the first and last night), accommodation costs are kept to a minimum whilst staying in a hostel for €20 each a night. On arrival, travels costs appear to be fairly expensive. But luckily there are coaches into the city for €7 which is

nothing to go by and most other travel on public transport would thereafter come to no more than €1.50. After arriving at the hostel, it is clear that to travel anywhere in this quaint area of Italy you would have to jump on a bus or have an enthusiasm for walking. But, with just that enthusiasm for walking, en exploration of the town is to be had. It is apparent that the food and drink in the area is extremely hit and miss. With a restaurant in every other building, one could sell the best coffee you’ve ever had but serve microwaved-like baby food meals, or vice versa. Whether you’re fortunate or not with the quality of the food, one thing that can be said for this area is that the majority of places are reasonably priced with main meals costing roughly between €7-15.

hen you do find somewhere good, the food is a credit to the area (and being a docking town, Genoa’s sea is a particular highlight). Then to begin the epic journey to a lake, which supposed to be not far from the main city. After getting two coaches from the hostel to the nearest town and a 10km walk over mountain, there would be doubts about whether or not a lake would be worth the trip. Another tip that should be made apparent if you’re ever to visit this beautiful place is to definitely learn some Italian before you go because, due to the size of the place, it is not as common to find English speaking Italians as you would think. Despite this, there are some wonderfully welcoming café owners to be found who can help with directions to the lake. Grab a cheeky espresso and some supplies and head off into the mist. Although tough, a walk over the mountain would deem incredible. With its amazing views and houses with so much character, breaks every twenty minutes to take pictures would be necessary. Arriving at the lake would be as satisfying as expected after the journey.

Clear blue water and the sound of wildlife all around would make it apparent that the right choice was made in making the journey at this location. Regardless of the cold nights, when waking up to what seemed like something from a Disney film with mist over the water, deer playing about and fish flipping out of the water not even a description could do the scene justice. After making fires, eating cheese and tomatoes and listening to the sound of wild pigs, the travel back to Genoa would begin. There to end the trip would be one over indulgent meal in one of the city restaurants including squid ink pasta and an excellent priced bottle of local Italian wine (€16). So, after gorging oneself, a mere €20 each would be spent on one of the biggest meals to be had over the whole trip. All in all, a budget of around £150 would be manageable to pay for all travel, accommodation, luxuries and even enough cash to buy a couple of presents in the duty free. So if you’re desperate to go to Italy, but your bank balance won’t allow it, you don’t have to go to Rome and spend hundreds to have a wonderfully authentic Italian experience.

ike Winter, head shaper at Acre surfboards, only began surfing at the age of 20, but with a long standing respect for all things ocean related, his interest in the sport quickly developed and has now become an integral part of his life. Not being able to source the exact board he was after, Mike immersed himself in the world of surfboard shaping. Spending his days reading up on tips and techniques of the trade, his main inspiration came directly from the West Coast of America, Cali to be precise, where board shaping developments were chopping and changing with the tide. Mike already had a feel for working with materials to create and form objects of desire from his background in sculpture. This artistic background combined with gratefully received advice from world class shapers meant Mike could comfortably translate his stylised ideas into foam creations.

he Students’ Union at AUB has finally secured a property for the long awaited popup gallery named DROP PROJECT. Their main goal this year is to provide a space for all students and all courses to showcase their artwork, practices and creative talents to the wider Bournemouth community. The Drop Project are breaking away from the campus and creating a student lead initiative open for everyone to get involved in. There will be a platform for each course to collaborate together, showcase their work and create dialogue between all the different disciplines that we have at AUB.

The gallery will be an interchangeable space with the ability to transform and suit the many different creative courses’ needs. On the ground floor there are multiple rooms to house anything from your traditional exhibition space to places for performance, installation and digital work. You graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2010 and moved on to become Director of If Not Now. What do you get up to at ‘If Not Now’? Primarily, I offer digital business consultancy - which can sound a little convoluted, but boils down to helping individuals and organisations develop digital projects and products (websites, applications etc) and create digital marketing strategies. Most recently, I’ve been working with an academic institution creating a learning management system that will allow them to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas online. We’re also working on a really exciting YouTube channel prospect… but that’s top secret! What made you want to go out and set up your own company? The simple answer is that I want to take on an employee within the next quarter to help me with a growing workload... The, perhaps, more interesting response is that I pretty much stumbled into self employment, it was never something I intentionally set out for. While I was working in New York alongside Karen D’Silva - a creative consultant who specialises in helping photographers build their careers and access new markets - I ended up being dubbed ‘Social Media Girl’; which I attribute to having spent far too many hours on the internet. Due to this title - deserved or otherwise - I built a network of clients, photographers, agents and agencies for whom I began to provide social media audits and strategies. When I moved to Brighton, I was fortunate enough to have a steady flow of new clients all through referral, but it wasn’t until May this year that the workload became so much that I realised it was worth becoming a limited company and looking at taking someone else on.

What did you study at AUB, and how did it help you get to where you are today? I studied the bachelors degree in Commercial Photography - though I realised early on into my third year that I found the business and theory of visual culture much more interesting than actually taking pictures. What my degree did equip me with was an understanding of the professional photographic industry that allowed me to communicate effectively with many of my initial clients. When I started out a solid 80% of my client base was professional - often commercial / advertising - photographers for whom I would provide social media and online marketing consultancy. Do you recommend fresh out of uni graduates to go it alone and do it for themselves (and do you have any tips)? Everyone’s career path is different and whilst I have enjoyed my journey into self-employment, it’s not something that I think is suitable for all graduates. You’ve got to have a lot of self-discipline, organisation skills, patience (with the awful HMRC website...) and be a good communicator so you can sell your work. Personally, I get a kick out of networking… You are also involved with organising the TEDxBrighton event, how did you get involved with this and why should we go? Like millions of people around the world, I found myself completely inspired and motivated by some of the fantastic talks on TED.com, so when I found out that you could apply to run a TEDx (x denoting the independent license) event in your local community I thought; my god does Bournemouth need something like this.... Then I didn’t move back to Bournemouth so ended up running the event in Brighton instead; but if any of your readers are thinking about hosting one in Bournemouth they should definitely get in touch with me as I would love to help out.

The three main TED (technology, entertainment & design) events, held in Vancouver, Whistler and Edinburgh, can cost up to $8000 to attend in person, whereas a TEDx event is limited to charging up to $100. The TEDx format opens up those inspirational talks to local audiences and directs their focus to the hosting community. When I went to TEDxBrooklyn in 2010 I had the pleasure of listening to Richard Saul Wurman, the founder of TED, as he came on stage holding a banana. As he approached the centre of the stage he turned the banana on it’s head so that the stem which once connected it to the branch was at the base. He then opened the skin from the opposing end and said, “look, none of those string-y bits.” For him, it was those little lightbulb moments that he hoped to give us all access to via TEDTalks; though typically the talks range from nuclear fission to women’s rights rather than bananas. If you need me to tell you why you should come to an event... you haven’t watched the right TEDTalks. Haha!

And lastly, what was the best thing for you, about being at AUB? Tough call, but for me, being connected to Karen via my Course Leader was undoubtably the most beneficial thing that came out of my degree. Moving to Brooklyn and working with her completely kick-started my career, especially as I was taking a detour from the content of my degree. From working with Karen, I was given a directorial position at a software company in the south of France working alongside an ex-Wall St, Columbia alumni medical surgeon...which was the biggest learning curve I’ve ever experienced, but completely invaluable. I also learnt that I can’t do a job just for the money, I have to be passionate about it and to be in a culture and with people that I respect.

There is a big focus on education, ensuring that the customer knows what they are drinking. A lot of people don’t seem to know or care what they are imbibing so, we aim to educate and inform our customers with information, from the history of drinks to tales of forbidden spirits.

e cater for everybody.” Says Kemal Azzeddin, the owner of Christchurch’s newly opened allembracing bar and restaurant, the Loch and Quay. It’s a beautifully fresh evening that is graced with sunshine and summer’s warmth and, as entering, the warmth and freshness continues. With its natural setting and wide open windows overlooking the charmingly independent streets of Christchurch, it is a restaurant that is scented with happy smiles and an all-round friendly vibe. Brick walls, drift wood and wooden floors are all just a fraction of what makes the atmosphere so authentic. Natural is a prominent theme that graces not only the surroundings and decoration, but also the food. The idea of locality is what makes the Loch and Quay so unique and spectacular. Here, a comfortable seat and tranquil, well-chosen music can certainly transfer you into a world of nature and relaxation. This is exactly what Kemal and his restaurant aim to do.

The Loch and Quay has currently graced Church Street for only a few weeks and, despite its short presence, has made a prodigious and positive impression. Whilst sitting and taking in the ambient and friendly atmosphere, it is clear that the food here is highly enjoyed by everybody – “This is delicious” was overheard from a couple at the table opposite. The Loch and Quay serve simple and classic British cuisine that everyone is familiar with; combined with Kemal’s Turkish background, the menu is truly something of taste and variety. This can be found through the selection of tapas and mezze to classically British (and locally caught) fish and chips. Plus, the decoration is surely something to be admired. Whilst being served a plate of golden-battered fish, the well-crafted chips are stacked and displayed to great visual affect. This also does not go unnoticed in the care and attention that goes into the coffees and their frothy yet fantastic designs.

A

ccessibility is what Kemal and his team thrive for both in terms of atmosphere and food prices – that is, prices that are very reasonable for the fresh and local food that they are serving. This is achieved well in the options of vegetarian and other dietary required dishes through to the meaty Black Angus burger. “We want to be recognised as a place that puts time and effort in” Says Kemal after discussing the options that are available and the special care that is put in to give the customer the dish that is suited for them. You could even phone up and make a dietary request – now, you certainly don’t get that kind of customer service in many other restaurants! “People have a better understanding of food these days” Says Kemal, so people want to know where their food is coming from and how it is being prepared. You can see the chefs hard at work from your seat and this definitely brings a sense of unity with the staff and customers; it’s also quite exciting to spot your dish being made. Clearly, the Loch and Quay is truly something spectacular. Not only do they serve natural and local food, but they also explain how and why they came about this. Through blind testing their meats, buns and many other samples at local shops, the conclusion was obvious: there was a unanimous vote that local and organic food was the tastiest. Kemal explains how their local fisherman washes the freshly line-caught fish in salted sea water so that they are ready to go straight to the restaurant – and straight onto the specials board.

“Everyone found them delicious” Kemal said with a slight grin across his face. Importing food is not what they are about. So, when deciding on what’s next for the special board, Kemal said that “It keeps the customers guessing what’s next” and it also depends what’s fresh and in season. The staff here at the end of the night will no doubt end up being your mates… “Last week we were dancing on tables”. Combined with the live music that is put on weekly, the sing-a-longs and great company sure brings about a personal touch that makes the night seem that little bit more special. After chatting about the previous nights and how he had customers playing on the spoons and bell, it sounds like they definitely know how to throw a party! Kemal has previously worked in restaurants in the past and his love for food has sprung from his families’ passion for cooking. His appetite for cuisine – excuse the pun, undeniably transfers into the atmosphere and catering at the Loch and Quay. Kemal has known the head chef, Giles, from a very young age. He strikes a slight chuckle and said that “it’s very handy!”. But not only does their relationship help in creating an exquisite and quality restaurant, but their close-knit staff creates an excellent atmosphere for any customer. Plus, Kemal’s sister Shireen, is right next door at Born Beauty Boutique.

The Loch and Quay is matchless. You can barely find a restaurant that initiates and encourages having a friendly chat with the table sitting next to you. This is due to Kemal and the staff’s strong passion for socialising, “We’d rather put money through customer service than advertising. You go away with a few surprises”. You certainly get treated well and they even learn you name….you don’t get that in many places, do you? With their up and coming plans to put on themed nights (Turkish or Spanish were mentioned) and their excellent sourced and local food, this is a bar and restaurant worth a visit.

hilst happily sedentary at a big wooden bar welldisplayed with local ciders and a fresh orange juice maker, it is almost hard not to notice the large shark hanging from the ceiling. With a beautiful park outside and an interior nicely decorated (and with plenty of grounds for entertainment), here is a place that serves for all purposes: great food, great drinks and great atmosphere for all ages. Le Bateau is situated in Ashley Cross and is an inimitable kitchen and bar that has stood strong for a mighty fifteen years. By supporting local surf shops, providing the area with exquisite food and delivering home-grown entertainment all under one roof, Le Bateau has made an invigorating stance among Bournemouth’s scene of cuisine. Recently, the venue has been turned-over and refurbished. With a stronger focus on surfing (and food, most importantly), it has now gone back to basics and back to retro surf; it has gone back to how it used to be. With a brand new team, Manager Robert Darnell (whose friends call him Bobby) explained how “they are young and fresh with a brand new big bar”. Those three aspects are certainly appetising to any customer. Samunariu Mugurel (Mario) is the new Head Chef and, with his Mediterranean background and Italian training, has a huge talent in cuisine. The food served here reveals the best of both worlds; through Mario’s background and training combined with Bobby’s restaurant experience, a whopping 50 years of knowledge stands between the two. This is unquestionably reflected in the food.

So, what can you eat here? “We cook honest food that people don’t have the time to cook at home” Said Mario after discussing how they get their food so distinctive. Le Bateau specialises in Italian pizzas and their food is cooked with a wood fire which undoubtedly makes the taste different and unique…and healthier, even! Mario spent three years in Italy to get the best of Italian food for their restaurant, “Italy is the mother of pizza” he said. This is why they import ingredients such as mozzarella and flour directly from Italy to provide pizza perfection. They have a wide range of people coming to enjoy the food, entertainment and friendly customer service. Besides, with such a variety of food available and all at a great price range this is unquestionable. Whilst imitating delectably an Australian surf shack, Le Bateau now hosts live music in a successful attempt to provide the restaurant with a young-feel that also suits for the professionals. The restaurant and bar aims to be a lifestyle venue where the evenings are very social for everybody – all ages and all professions. This ethos of everybody being welcome with a warm social vibe also translates throughout the food: they provide funky sharing platters that are hugely popular among the customers. Due to the refurbishment, the venue now has an all over new experience and the staff here are working hard on change – but they are initially going back to their roots. Le Bateau used to be the only bar in the area and it was very surf-based. They are getting the old vibes back with acoustic chilled music, live events and surfy interiors. A wall covered in surf vintage magazine covers is a definite favourite. The covers alongside many surf prints displayed around the restaurant were generously donated by the well-known surfer Guy Penwarden which brings across a personal and aesthetically pleasing touch.

A relaxed atmosphere is definitely achieved throughout the day as, whilst revelling in a vegetarian pizza topped with sweet potato, chilled acoustic music is delicately played through the restaurants speakers. Interview with Neil Kennedy at The Ranch Production House.

So Neil, In 2009 yourself and Geoff set up The Ranch. How did that all come about? I had been working out of a practice room space in Southampton (Planet sounds, the old studio was called ‘Shelter’) for a few years and Geoff had been in a similar kind of set up in Salisbury. We seemed to have similar ethos, similar ideas for how to build and run a business in an industry which is, to put it delicately, in a state of flux at present. I start building the Ranch and Geoff, initially passed on it, joined the project a month or so into the build. Where did the name ‘The Ranch’ come from? It’s just a dumb reference to it being on a Farm, over the years our courtyard was used for a riding school also. Farms, horses etc Ranch just sounded cooler than ‘Farm’! You’ve got a few other engineers on board who do recording as well, and you all seem to enjoy different genres of music. Do you find this makes your studios more appealing for people to come and record? Yeah I think so! There’s obviously a little cross over between the engineers but we all work for the greater good in the end so there’s little conflict and most of the time it works pretty smoothly. It doesn’t works in the sense that I’m the ‘Rock’ guy and Lewis (Johns, the 3rd partner) is the ‘Hardcore’ guy but we certainly do have comfort zones that we produce work which attracts more clients but all 3 of us like to get out of the comfort zone where possible and challenge our selves.

You’ve most recently expanded, and musicians can now find themselves making sweet tunes in The Black Lodge. Did you feel this was something you needed to do to move The Ranch on to the next level? Absolutely. The black lodge has been our biggest undertaking, biggest risk and it seems to be our biggest selling point now! The Lodge is an 84 sq Meter Live space with huge ceilings and tonnes of vibe. Someone with more business acumen than me might call it a ‘Unique selling point’ for our business. Essentially it offers greater ambience for our recordings and clients, it is a ‘feel good’ space and has increased the quality of our output greatly. On top of this it also offers us the chance to get involved with having videographers and photographers come in and use the space for music videos, live sessions, photo shoots etc it seems to have a great deal of appeal as a creative space. Connected to this is our new control room which is a big step up from our original space also. Are there are any plans for further development? A year on from building the lodge we have just finished converting our last ‘spare’ space into a mix suite which is basically a little one person room with a computer and some monitors in so a 3rd engineer can be in working, editing, mixing etc while the recoding spaces are in use. As for the future I think we’ve pretty much run out of space unless our land lord want to do us a nice deal on her farm house!

What can a band or musician expect when they visit you? You have a wide range of facilities and equipment on offer. We offer access to our extensive back line inclusive with the studio. Essentially all of us who work here are gear obsessed nerds so we collect amazing amps, drum kits, Microphones, basically anything that can give us a great tone or something different for our recordings! A band arriving at the studio will have 2 working environments on offer, a couple of green rooms with Xbox’s and sofa’s and access to accommodation if required. Gear wise, we have an extensive list on our website but highlights include some amazing vintage Marshalls, Fenders and Orange guitar amps, a stunning DW collectors drum kit, piles of guitar FX pedals, Cabinets full of Microphones and other studio esoterica! You have a high number of musicians come and work with either you or one of the other guys. Of course it’s because you guys are so damn good, but also do you think is due to your services being affordable for everyone no matter how big or small? We all share a similar ethos with regards to the studio work. We don’t look to milk our clients of every penny, we work hard and we do our upmost to make sure everything that leaves the building has been recorded and mix to the highest standards we can offer. When a prospective client gets in touch first thing we do is try and get a project price that covers them from tracking, to mix and then on to either in house mastering or over to one of the trusted mastering engineers with which we’ve built a relationship over the last few years,

that way there’s no horrible surprises at the end for the clients and we have a solid idea what we’re going to be making from each session. Of course there’s always a margin of error but we, without fail, make sure we do everything with total transparency. Is there an EP/Album that you are particularly proud of working on? I think if you ask each of us there’d be something over the last few years that we’re each proud of! Personally I’m proud of the work I did last year with Landscapes and Burn The Fleet. I think both albums had distinctive sounds and are both, artistically, incredible records. I know Lewis is proud of the work he’s done with guys like Grappler and Sharks over the last year and Geoff did an incredible job last year with a folky duo called Paper Shades. You’ve worked with some great local bands over the years, as well as national and international bands. Who have you worked with recently that we should keep an ear out for within the next few months? In the last 6 months I’ve been lucky enough to work with a few incredible up and coming artists, I’ll name drop a couple here! Signals are from the Isle of Wight and their recent EP is amazing! Guys like Rob Da Bank have already picked up on it and they just scored a slot at the Isle of Wight festival! They have influences like Local Natives and Maps and Atlases but channel something really very unique also. Secondly, Press To Meco are a three piece from Croydon that are a bit of a mash up between Biffy, Muse and something much heavier! Really technical but melodic, expressive and, importantly, accessibility.

ot simply in the literal sense – although ‘Peace’ was largely written during a series of sessions at guitarist Iain Mahanty’s house, as he and frontman Aled Phillips tinkered at leisure – but in the way that it represents the band at their most relaxed. Where 2011’s ‘In Gold Blood’ was a critically acclaimed head-trip through a fantasy world, ‘Peace’ is a boundlessly entertaining collection of songs that proves beyond all doubt, that Aled, Iain, guitarist Joel Fisher, bassist Andrew Sheehy and drummer Philip Jenkins, can write one hell of a tune. “The approach to this record was to do something in the vein of what we used to do, where we focused on writing singles, as on ‘Smart Casual’ and ‘Dirt’,” says Aled. “Then again, it’s as experimental as the last album, but instead of making one big, sprawling album we tried to make each song as catchy and memorable as possible.” And that’s exactly what they’ve done. ‘Peace’ fizzes with ambition and melody, because Kids In Glass Houses stripped back the dramatic concepts and instead focused on what really matters to them. Being in a band is one of the best ways possible to spend your days, and the simple joys therein inspired their most confident album yet. “We just wanted to have fun writing songs again. The last album was us challenging ourselves so much that it stopped being fun, and on this one we just had fun with the songs,” remembers the singer. “Writing them was a pleasure, and we were writing in a different way because Iain had become better at doing demos at his house, and I’d just go there and we’d write together. “We had more discipline in the actual writing, but that made them come more naturally because we were more focused. We think we’re better when we do those three-minute, catchy pop-rock gems, and we didn’t just want to do it as a bland pop-punk band, we wanted to push ourselves and do something musically new.” While it avoids the all-pervading darkness of ‘In Gold

Blood’, ‘Peace’ retains its intelligent songwriting and inimitable ear for a hook and marries it to a newfound sense of abandon. It’s a thoroughly modern guitar album with a contemporary edge that will both sate long-time Kids fans and appeal to newcomers. Featuring Aled’s most personal lyrics ever, it’s an unprecedented look into his life, written from an entirely pretension-free standpoint. Having formed in South Wales in the same fertile scene that also produced the likes of Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral For A Friend and myriad others, Kids In Glass Houses rapidly rose to prominence after being championed by their peers as talented newcomers. By the time of the release of debut album ‘Smart Casual’ in 2008 on esteemed rock institution Roadrunner Records, they had a Kerrang! Award nomination and numerous tours already under their collective belt; once it surfaced, things went crazy for the quintet. Support tours with the likes of Paramore and Fall Out Boy swiftly followed, and before long work had begun on what would become second album ‘Dirt’. Daytime radio play, festival main stages and significant press attention would greet its release in 2010, teeing up their shift into darker territories with ‘In Gold Blood’ the following year. What ‘Peace’ does is both serve as a reminder of what Kids In Glass Houses have achieved thus far and signal a bright new future for them. There’s a gleeful simplicity to it, that’s summed up by Aled himself: “ We wanted to make something that sounds fresh – it doesn’t necessarily sound like what guitar bands are doing at the moment! But it sounds like us, our own little niche. And more importantly, I want people to take it for what it is, which is ten awesome songs.”

INTERVIEW What and who first got you excited about music? I grew up listening to a lot of Ray Charles and 60s rock thanks to my father, and then my brothers got me into Kiss and whatnot, so I guess that’s where I got my first taste and excitement for music. When was it you realised you could start making it yourself and at that time did you ever think it would go this far? A friend of mine showed me FL Studio. I’ve been hooked from the minute I first got it. I would spend almost 12 hours a day producing. I worked really hard to get where I am today but I truly had no idea I would make it this far. If I hadn’t met Ash, my manager, I probably wouldn’t be. Was it a surprise being ranked number 3 in DJ Mags Top 100 DJs list last year? It was a great honor to be ranked #3, especially amongst such great DJs. However, I never really check my rank. It’s always flattering if you get a good ranking but I don’t know how much it actually helps. Who is the best DJ in the world right now in your opinion? There is so much talent out there right now, it’s really incredible. I just can’t narrow it down to one DJ or producer. Dance music is constantly evolving; we’ve had dub step, grime, moombahton, what’s the next big thing? Only time will tell how dance music will evolve, it will be interesting to see where it goes. What do you think sets you apart from other DJs? I’ve been working a lot on getting a signature sound, the big-room melodic sound which I think sets me apart from other producers and what they’re doing. You’ve produced tracks with some world-renowned artists, who has been the most fun to work with? That is a hard question. I loved working with all of them in some way to be honest.

Who has so far escaped you collaboration wise and who are you looking to work with in the future? To my knowledge, no one has escaped yet! But then again I never reach out; it’s always my manager, Ash, who handles all of that. My dream collaboration would be Adele. The Avicii X You project invited anyone in the world to contribute to a song that you would produce, what was the response like and are you happy with the finished track? This track was such a unique experience. I wanted my fans to be a part of the process that goes along with making a track and see what we could create together, and we did just that. I received about 13,000 submissions and put some final touches on it in the studio. I think the track turned out to be a great learning experience and success. You’re playing at Creamfields in August, what’s it like playing a festival compared to a club? It’s just two different types of vibes. A good club show can be as good as a good festival but obviously in a different way. Festivals are way bigger, and seeing the reactions of twenty thousand people jumping can yield different results than playing to a club. Is there anyone you’re looking forward to watching perform at Creamfields this year? I’m not sure what I can and can’t say right now but I’m always trying to do something really special for such big festivals as Creamfields. Where would you go for the perfect night out? I’m not sure, I guess it really depends on where I am but I really like the food over at Berns in Stockholm, Sweden. What’s on your mixtape? I listen to a lot of music when I’m working so when I’m off I tend to not listen to anything at all.

So where did it all start? As far as defining a location, Source Bar (a local nightclub in Kent) was where I discovered my infatuation with underground music. The club had a courtyard where selected DJ’s would play. It was small, dark, dingy and crammed full of people on a weekly basis. Everything about it was right! Where does the name ‘Neffa-T’ come from? The name is a discrete homage. Years back a good friend of mine gave me a book called ‘The Prophet’, which inspired me to start DJ’ing. Another term for Prophet is ‘Neferty’ and with some wordplay I created the alias Neffa-T. Who would you chart as your main influences? There was a DJ I stumbled upon years ago when I first started out called ‘Whoa-B’. His mixes opened my eyes to a lot of music spanning back to the early days of grime, dubstep and UKG. I was definitely influenced by his selection drawing for spaced out, primitive tracks that had a unique and experimental sound. Apart from that I don’t have a specific group of influential artists. However, I drew a lot of inspiration from various

mix CDs and series – such as Sidewinder and Fabriclive. Notably the first of these mixes I listened to were by artists such as DJ Slimzee, High Contast, Caspa & Rusko. What’s your pet hate when playing out? I don’t have a particular ‘hate’. DJ’ing is something I love to do, so I rarely find myself facing problems and negativity. On the flip side what are your favourite parts? My favourite part of playing out is communicating with the crowd. DJ’ing is a two-way relationship between yourself and the people watching/listening to you, and when you have a good response it fuels you to keep pushing up the energy levels. You’ve played at festivals such as Outlook, Bugged Out, and Horizons. What’s next in store for Neffa-T? I’m currently finishing off my new mix, which is hosted by legendary grime MC – Flirta D. This has been my main focus for the past month. Aside from that a great deal of my time is now being devoted to production which is an aspect of my career I now want to focus on more than ever.
