Academic Focus Level 6, the top level of our Semester Program departs from the broad communication goals of Level 1 – 5 and focuses on the written and oral skills necessary for success in the English language post-secondary classroom. Students completing Level 6 with a minimum final grade of B+ in each course are eligible for direct entry into the Academic Communication Certificate.
Admission Requirements Proof of English language proficiency is not required to enter the Semester Program; students will be tested at the beginning of the program and then placed in the appropriate level. Advanced placement into Levels 5 and 6 of the Semester Program is available for students wishing to guarantee their level placements. The following minimum requirements are required for advanced placements: • • Level 5: TOEFL iBT score of 40, IELTS score of 5.0, or CAEL score of 40. • • Level 6: TOEFL iBT score of 52, IELTS score of 5.5, or CAEL score of 50.

Admission Requirements
The Academic Communication Certificate (ACC) is designed for English learners who want to improve their English skills to enter Canadian college or university programs. Through intensive instruction of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), you will not only develop essential skills required in academic settings, but also gain critical knowledge that leads to a successful transition to Canadian university culture. Students can choose to exit the ACC with the Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL), a nationally-recognized standardized test of academic English.
Students must fulfill one of the following minimum requirements: •• Successful completion of Level 6 of the ELP Semester Program •• TOEFL iBT score of 70 •• TOEFL PBT score of 533 •• IELTS score of 6.0 •• CAEL score of 60 •• MELAB score of 76 •• PTE score of 54 •• Cambridge English Language Assessment (CAE/CPE) score of 172
Students completing the ACC with a grade of B+ or higher will meet the English language proficiency requirement for admission into applicable University of Calgary undergraduate programs. Students intending to apply for admission at other Canadian universities or colleges can use their CAEL results to show proof of English proficiency. Your path to academic success starts with the ACC!
University of Calgary Continuing Education Certificate Students completing the Academic Communication Certificate with a grade of C or higher will be eligible for the certificate.
Courses EAP 220: Academic Writing & Composition (56 hours) This course focuses on writing effective academic paragraphs and essays while mastering essential sentence skills and reading critically. EAP 225: Research Writing & Form (56 hours) This course focuses on the process of writing research papers and critical responses while mastering critical reading and thinking. Students will attain advanced skills in comprehension, analysis, interpretation and citation required in research writing.
EAP 230: Critical Listening & Notetaking (56 hours) This course prepares English learners transitioning to an English-speaking university setting with the skills needed to engage in critical academic listening across content areas. EAP 235: Oral Communication Skills & Presentations (48 hours) This course develops essential skills that will help English learners defend ideas in academic settings, present coherent concepts, speak thoughtfully in discussions and contribute to group projects.
EAP 249: Academic Success Tutorials (24 hours) Seminars designed to facilitate success in the Canadian undergraduate degreecredit environment. Topics include academic integrity, critical thinking, exam conditioning & preparation, health & wellness, learning styles, study strategies, time management, understanding learning objectives and university customs & policies.

Building Fluency: Effective Communication Join students from all over the world and build your speaking and listening skills in our five-week intensive programs. Take English out of the textbook and into real life — your path to effective communication starts here. Levels: high beginner to upper advanced.
Courses General English communication skills This course takes a communicative approach to learning English, including lectures, learning activities, exercises, listening activities, pair/group discussions, and class discussions. Literature Circle discussion groups This course aims to develop proficiency at integrating critical thinking skills, reading tasks, writing tasks and vocabulary development. You will read and discuss a book with peers.
Pronunciation In this course, you will improve your pronunciation by focusing on vowel sounds, consonant sounds, syllable stress, word stress, contractions, rhythm and intonation. Vocabulary/Idioms In this course, you will review vocabulary learned in the morning class, as well as learn a variety of natural English expressions to be used in conversation.

Live in English! Living with a Canadian family is an excellent way to improve your English and intercultural skills. It provides you with an opportunity to practice your English in an informal setting and learn about Canadian culture. Many of our families have provided homestay accommodation for 10 years or more. We accept only the most respectable, considerate, and dependable families who will treat our students well and help them to learn English and Canadian culture. Payment Information
Refund Policy
Most international students require an entrance document — either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — and possibly a study permit to enter and study in Canada. For more information, visit ucalgary.ca/iss/immigration/info-elp. Study permits can take a long time to process, so please apply early.
Visa, MasterCard, or American Express are the preferred methods of payment. Bank wire transfers are also an acceptable means of payment; however, they are expensive and slow. All bank transfers require an additional $50 processing fee. Bank wire refunds usually require additional processing fees and a minimum of 3 months for refund. If paying in person, cash or debit card are also acceptable.
Tuition fees (minus non-refundable deposits) will be refunded to students who withdraw, in writing, 15 days before the course begins. After this point, a 50 percent refund of tuition will be given for withdrawals received in writing prior to the first day of the program. No refunds are given for withdrawals after the program begins.
It is recommended that you check with your nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate for more information on applying for entrance documents and study permits from your current country of residence. You can also visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website at cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp. You will be asked to provide your immigration status to the English Language Program office for reporting purposes.
Deposits: A deposit is required for each course at the time of registration. All course deposits are towards tuition, not in addition to it. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable. • ESL 100: $500 • EAP 200: $500 • ESL 101: $200 • ESL 111: $200 • ESL 105: $300

Application Fee $200 application fee is required at the time of registration. This is a one-time fee and non-refundable under any circumstances.
Deadlines Applications and non-refundable deposits must be received 30 days before the start of the course. Full payment is due 15 days before the course begins.

English Language Program Certificate
For the homestay program, a full refund, less the placement fee and non-refundable deposit(s), will be issued to students who withdraw in writing 14 days before their homestay begins. All other homestay cancellations will be refunded on a weekly pro-rated basis less the non-refundable deposit and the two-week notification period. Refunds will not be provided, under any circumstances, for periods of homestay already used. There will be a $50 per course administrative fee for all drops and transfers. If a visa denial prevents the student from entering Canada, tuition fees and deposits will be refunded with written proof of denial up until 15 days before the program start date. Administrative fees still apply.
Students who attend a minimum of 90% of classes will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the course.
Emergency Health Insurance Emergency health insurance is provided for international students under 65 from the first to final day of each applicable course. All fees must be paid in full for insurance to be processed and valid. Additional insurance is available between courses at an additional cost. Extreme activities (such as bungee jumping or skydiving) are not covered.
