Carbon Neutrality in the UNECE Region: Technology Interplay under the Carbon Neutrality Concept

United Nations

This publication calls for ambitious and bold action from governments, the private sector and regulators. Development of technologies will require new regulatory frameworks to support immediate commercialization. Policy frameworks should also incorporate legally binding commitments for increased international technology transfer, harmonized standards, and definitions for ‘green’ hydrogen, energy efficiency, and conservation. All decisions should be assessed against existing and upcoming net-zero and climate neutrality targets, with all energy infrastructure built to be net-zero compliant. Integrating innovative energy technologies, alongside the transformation of energy markets and downstream industries, is a challenge and an opportunity.

Circularity Concepts in Wood Construction United Nations

Wood as a natural raw material has advantages over other building materials. As a biobased resource, it has considerable benefits concerning greenhouse gas emissions, carbon-storing, thermal insulation as well as human health and wellbeing compared to other construction materials. New types of wood products enable the extensive use of wood in tall buildings. Innovative wood products provide less manufacturing waste, low carbon-emission alternatives and store massive quantities of carbon while new technologies speed construction processes and promote energy efficiency. This study examines the benefits of wood as a construction material and discusses practices applied in the wood construction sector from the perspective of circularity, sustainability and climate change mitigation.

Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2023

Mapping Resilience for the Sustainable Development Goals United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

Global warming will surpass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in the next decade, due to greenhouse gas emissions. The constant rise in temperatures and related impacts combine with other pressures, thus increasing risk and undermining resilience. The interconnectedness of people and human systems increases the risk of compound and cascading crises. The maps in this report highlight number of these resilience deficits that hold back achievement of key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report shows this is not inevitable, and how action is possible on every continent to stop the worsening spiral of risk and disasters and to accelerate SDG target achievement.

Survey of Economic and Social Developments in the Arab Region 2021-2022 United Nations

As countries worldwide recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine is expected to result in severe implications for the global economy. The ongoing conflict is driving up energy and commodity prices, and threatening food security in many parts of the world. The magnitude of the impact on individual countries depends on the composition of their economies, and their trade and financial links with the two countries in conflict. In addition to higher energy prices, countries face increasing food security concerns and disruptions to supply chains caused by military activities. Some also face a decline in official development assistance.

Crises of Inequality: Shifting Power for a New Eco-Social Contract United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)

There is perhaps no stronger evidence of the pressing need to redesign our global system than the fact that a global health crisis doubled the wealth of the 10 richest men in the world while sending upwards of 120 million people into extreme poverty. This report shows how inequalities and crises reinforce and compound each other, leading to extreme disparity, vulnerability and unsustainability. It argues that this is not the result of a broken system but one in which inequality and injustice are built in by design. The social contract has unravelled to the great detriment of people and planet. The report associates the multiple crises and rising inequalities we are facing with policy choices during the age of hyperglobalization.

Transforming Institutions to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals After the Pandemic United Nations

This report examines the role that national institutional and governance innovations and changes that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic can play in advancing progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Convention on the Rights of the Child United Nations Essential Documents Series United Nations

In 1989, world leaders made a historic commitment to the world’s children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This Convention, one of the core human rights instruments, has become the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history and has helped transform children’s lives around the world. It is up to our generation to demand that governments, businesses and communities fulfil their commitments and take action for child rights now, once and for all. The e-book for this publication has been converted into an accessible format for the visually impaired and people with print reading disabilities. 16 4 3

A Child’s Right to Rights United Nations

Written from the perspective of a child, this book explains in simple text many of the rights that are found in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child: from the right to play, to learn, and to share thoughts freely to protection from harmful work, violence, and exploitation. Young readers will learn that each one of them is important, but together these rights help kids everywhere live healthy and happy lives. This beautifully illustrated book contains drawings and paintings created by children from around the world—the winners of an international drawing competition titled “Kids for Human Rights”— illustrating each of the rights.

Energy Transition and the Post-COVID-19 Socioeconomic Recovery: Role of Women and Impact on Them

United Nations

Energy systems are transitioning to a decarbonized, sustainable economy. However, gender disparities in the energy sector have been observed around the world. Women are less represented in policymaking, corporate leadership and governance, as entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, and in the labour workforce. These barriers are surmountable using a two-way complementary approach, which is simultaneously bottom-up - action by women and society to bridge the gap of gender inequality in the energy sector – and top-down – government and policymakers need to develop policy tools to encourage women’s participation in the energy sector. This volume summarises key findings from a report and empirical case studies conducted in Albania, Belarus, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Uzbekistan.

Global Education Monitoring Report 2023 Technology in Education - A Tool on Whose Terms?

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

The achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on education is dependent on opportunities and challenges posed by technology, a relationship that was strengthened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Technology appears in six out of the ten targets in SDG 4. These references recognize that technology affects education through five distinct channels, as input, means of delivery, skill, tool for planning, and providing a social and cultural context. There are divisions in how the role of technology is viewed, however. These divisions are widening as technology is evolving at breakneck speed. This report explores these debates, examining education challenges to which appropriate use of technology can offer solutions.

Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2022 United Nations

This volume examines the global and regional evolution of FDI and offers recommendations so these flows can contribute to the region’s productive development. FDI can support the investments needed for countries to move towards more inclusive and sustainable development, but that does not happen automatically. Policies are needed to provide a framework so that FDI entering the region is directed towards activities that support virtuous development in respect of inclusiveness, employment quality, environmental sustainability, innovation and technological sophistication. Given the growing complexity of the international landscape, it is increasingly necessary to establish national and multilateral development strategies in the region and to coordinate public and private efforts in such directions.

Trade and Development Report 2022

Development Prospects in a Fractured World: Global Disorder and Regional Responses United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

The Trade and Development Report 2022 analyses current economic trends and major policy issues of international concern, and makes suggestions for addressing these issues at various levels. This year's report emphasizes that structural imbalances and inequalities in the global macroeconomic environment have grown since the global financial crisis and have intensified further with the COVID-19 pandemic. With less than a decade to meet the Agenda 2030, this year's report finds that current policy trends could imperil the progress of developing countries towards inclusive and sustainable development. While improved policy coordination is needed at the multilateral level to better address the vulnerabilities facing developing countries, scaling up and strengthening regional arrangements can also help widen the opportunities from closer economic integration.

The Generalized System of Preferences: How Much Does it Matter for Developing Countries?

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) scheme is a voluntary trade measure implemented by developed countries that provide an advantageous, or “preferential”, tariff treatment to imports from developing countries. The scheme aims to contribute to developing countries’ export growth particularly in the manufacturing sector. Five decades since its inception, the GSP scheme stands at a crossroads. The effectiveness of tariff incentives as a tool to foster exports has eroded over time as trade liberalization processes at multilateral, regional, and unilateral levels declines. The question arises as to whether the relevance and effectiveness of tariff preferences remain valid today. This volume provides an objective assessment of tariff advantages offered under the GSP by quantifying the economic “value” of preferential treatment and the obstacles to the realization of its full potential.

State of Commodity Dependence 2023

United Nations

A country is export commodity-dependent when its exports are heavily concentrated on primary commodities. Commodity dependence can be linked to different persistent or even structural conditions of a country such as its resource endowment and factor composition, institutions, geographic situation, history and others. States are commodity dependent if more than 60 per cent of their merchandise export value comes from commodities. It is important to monitor and analyze the evolution of commodity dependence, as the latter can have negative implications for a country's welfare and development. This document identifies and characterizes commodity-dependent countries, and discusses the recent evolution of commodity prices, commodity export value and the net asset position of these countries. It also delves into country-specific commodity dependence profiles that include economic and social statistics.

Commodities and Development Report 2023

Inclusive Diversification and Energy Transition

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

This report highlights pathways to economic diversification in commodity-dependent developing countries in an environment where decarbonization of the global economy has become the overarching objective of climate change mitigation. The report argues that inclusive and green diversification is possible if the right to development of commodity-dependent developing countries, the need to address climate change, and existing inequalities are addressed in a common and balanced way. In this regard, green industrial policy can help to promote inclusive structural transformation in commodity-dependent developing countries. Furthermore, strong political commitment both in commodity-dependent developing countries and their development partners is needed to achieve just diversification pathways.

UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2023

The Path That Ends AIDS

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)

This report makes clear that there is a path to end AIDS. Taking that path will help ensure preparedness to address other pandemic challenges, and advance progress across the Sustainable Development Goals. The data and real-world examples in the report make it very clear what that path is. It is inspiring to note that Botswana, Eswatini, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe have already achieved the 95–95–95 targets, and at least 16 other countries are close to doing so. HIV responses succeed when they are anchored in strong political leadership to follow the evidence; to tackle the inequalities holding back progress; to enable communities and civil society organizations in their vital roles in the response; and to ensure sufficient and sustainable funding.

Our Common Agenda: Report of the Secretary-General United Nations

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals.

Geneva, Cradle of the League of Nations United Nations

The designation of Geneva as the Seat of the League of Nations in 1919 marked a watershed in many regards. On the one hand, the establishment of the first intergovernmental organization founded to maintain peace and promote international cooperation thrust the quiet town on the shores of Lake Geneva into the global diplomatic spotlight. On the other, it raised unprecedented challenges in infrastructural, political, legal and administrative terms that would enduringly shape the history of Geneva and, to a certain extent, the development of modern international organizations. By exploring the interactions between international and local history, this publication studies how Geneva became the cradle of a unique multilateral experience and provides insight into the oftenundervalued legacy of the League of Nations.
