Carbon Neutrality in the ECE Region

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE)

Well-informed energy policy design is key to reaching decarbonization targets and keeping global climate change under a 2°C threshold. In particular, lowcarbon electricity provision for all is essential, as the IPCC shows that the most ambitious climate mitigation scenarios entail the electrification of most of our economy. Understanding the full scale of potential impacts from current and future electricity generation is required, in order to avoid “impact leakage”increasing non-climate environmental pressure while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Life cycle assessment allows the evaluation of a product over its life cycle, and across a wide range of environmental indicators – this method was chosen here to report on the environmental profiles of various technologies.

ISSUES

Places and Spaces Environments and Children's Well-being

United Nations

This report explores how 43 OECD/EU countries are faring in providing healthy environments for children. Do children have clean water to drink? Do they have good-quality air to breathe? Are their homes free of lead and mold? How many children live in overcrowded homes? How many have access to green play spaces, safe from road traffic? Data show that a nation’s wealth does not guarantee a healthy environment. Far too many children are deprived of a healthy home, irreversibly damaging their current and future well-being. Beyond children’s immediate environments, over-consumption in some of the world’s richest countries is destroying children’s environments globally. This report makes policy recommendations to help protect children.

Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022

Our World at Risk: Transforming Governance for a Resilient Future United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

The central question for this year's report is how governance systems can evolve to better address the systemic risks of the future. In today’s crowded and interconnected world, disaster impacts increasingly cascade across geographies and sectors. The report highlights that a) the climate emergency and the systemic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic point to a new reality; b) understanding and reducing risk in a world of uncertainty is fundamental to achieving genuinely sustainable development; and c) the best defence against future shocks is to transform systems now, to build resilience by addressing climate change, and to reduce the vulnerability, exposure, and inequality that drive disasters.

Human Development Report 2021/22 Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Continuing the thread of the 2019 and 2020 HDRs, this year's HDR carries forward a conversation centered on inequalities while integrating other important themes related to uncertainties in the Anthropocene: societal-level transformations, mental health impacts, political polarization, but also, crucially, opportunity. The Report explores how uncertainty in the Anthropocene is changing, what is driving it, what it means for human development, and how we can thrive in spite of it. The report argues that, in the end, doubling down on human development is central to a more prosperous future for all.

Industrial Development Report 2022

The Future of Industrialization in a Post-Pandemic World United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

The global economy cannot fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic unless internationally coordinated actions are taken, and the industrial sector must be central to these efforts. The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that manufacturing remains the backbone of our economies. Yet, it also shows the vulnerability of our production systems to sudden shocks. For recovery to take hold, it is critical to understand how the pandemic has affected the sector—and the prospects for the future of industrialization as economies worldwide continue to rebound and recover. This report contributes to the discussion by providing evidence at the country, industry, and firm level and documents the impacts of the crisis, by examining the drivers of resilience and vulnerability in those contexts.

Shaping our Digital Future

Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report 2022

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP)

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL STUDIES Formats Available

The COVID-19 pandemic detonated a “digital big bang” that spurred people, governments, and businesses to become “digital by default;” a sea change that generated vast digital dividends. But new development gaps have emerged as digital transformation reinforces a vicious cycle of socioeconomic inequalities. This report highlights that bridging digital divide and ensuring that advances in technology can benefit everyone will be a key challenge as the Asia-Pacific region seeks to achieve a more inclusive and sustainable post-pandemic recovery. It argues that digital connectivity infrastructure is a critical “meta-infrastructure” for sustainable development and recommends pathways for action.

Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific

Through analysis, it aims to strengthen the evidence base and build capacity of policymakers to design and expand social protection, active labour market policies and health systems to achieve a resilient workforce today and in the future.

The Least Developed Countries Report 2022

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

This year’s Report highlights the development strategies and policies which LDCs need to enact to reach the ambitious objectives to which they have committed, and the painful trade-offs between climate action and accelerated progress towards fulfilling their right to development they will need. It shows that despite this harsh reality, international support for LDC adaptation and sustainable development has fallen remarkably short of what is needed. The Report calls on the international community to be mindful of the institutional and capacity constraints that create scope for maladaptation in LDCs and to enhance targeted assistance to LDCs in line with their need for special and differential treatment.

Trade and Development Report 2022

Development prospects in a fractured world: Global disorder and regional responses United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

This year’s report emphasizes that structural imbalances and inequalities in the global macroeconomic environment have grown since the global financial crisis and have intensified further with the Covid-19 pandemic. With less than a decade to meet the Agenda 2030, the Report finds that current policy trends could imperil the progress of developing countries towards inclusive and sustainable development. While improved policy coordination is needed at the multilateral level to better address the vulnerabilities facing developing countries, strengthening regional arrangements can also help widen the opportunities from closer economic integration.

Where such data do exist, persons with disabilities - especially women, youth, and rural habitants among them - are found to fare worse than those without in the labor market. Disability at a Glance 2021: The Shaping of Disability-inclusive Employment in Asia and the Pacific seeks to equip ESCAP members and associate members with updated information and insights on promoting employment for persons with disabilities in the region, through snapshots of the latest figures, trends, policy developments, and inspirational practices.

The State of the World's Children 2021

On My Mind: Promoting, Protecting and Caring for Children’s Mental Health

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised huge concerns for the mental health of an entire generation of children. But it may represent only the tip of a mental health iceberg we have ignored for far too long. This report examines the mental health of children and adolescents. Against a backdrop of rising awareness of mental health issues, there is now a unique opportunity to promote good mental health for every child, protect vulnerable children, and care for children facing the greatest challenges. Making that happen will require urgent investment in child and adolescent mental health across sectors – not just in health – to support proven interventions. It will also need societies to break the silence surrounding mental health, by addressing stigma, promoting understanding, and taking seriously the experiences of children and young people.

Our Common Agenda: Report of the Secretary-General United Nations

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals. TRANSFORMING EDUCATION, BUILDING OUR FUTURE

The Transforming Education Summit responds to a global crisis in education – one of equity and inclusion, quality and relevance. Often slow and unseen, this crisis is having a devastating impact on the futures of children and youth worldwide.

The Summit provides a unique opportunity to elevate education to the top of the global political agenda and to mobilize action and solutions to recover pandemic-related learning losses and sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.
