It is to a group of students that we owe the founding of one of the first universities in Europe almost eight centuries ago:

the University of Padova, founded in 1222 and destined to welcome teachers of the calibre of Galileo Galilei and Andreas Vesalius, and students of the likes of Francesco Guicciardini, Carlo Goldoni, and the first woman in the world to be awarded a degree, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia. Today, Padova is among the foremost Italian universities, in terms of size and of educational quality. In 2017, it received revenues amounting to euros 543 million, earning bonus endowments of euros 72 million on top of its base funding. Its excellence in research is also reflected in the official Anvur evaluation (2017), which placed Padova at the top of the national rankings. In addition to the

The introduction of empirical and experimental methods together with the teaching of theory marked the dawn of a golden age. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Padova became a workshop of ideas, and a home to figures who changed the cultural and scientific history of humanity. These included Andreas Vesalius, reputed the founder of modern human anatomy and Galileo, who observed the heavens here.

THE MASTERS The great Pisan scientist taught at Padova from 1592 to 1610, a period he would later define as the best years of his life. It was during this time that Galileo Galilei developed the law of falling bodies, perfected the telescope GALILEO GALILEI 1564-1642
and discovered four satellites of Jupiter. Born into a noble Venetian family, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia displayed an early appetite for study. Despite the veto imposed by the authorities on her possible pursuit of a degree in theology, on 25 June 1678, in Padova, she succeeded in securing the title of Magistra et doctrix in Philosophia,

becoming the world’s first woman graduate. A celebrated poet and writer, Ugo Foscolo was one of the foremost men of letters between the Neoclassic and Romantic periods. He was taught and influenced by Melchiorre Cesarotti, a professor at the University of Padova known for his translations of Homer and of the “Songs of Ossian”. In 1795,

Foscolo asked Cesarotti for an opinion of his first tragedy, “Tieste”. An ingenious inventor and pioneer of industry, Enrico Bernardi built the first Italian automobile in 1894. It had three wheels, a four-stroke engine, and could reach a speed of 35 km/h. A working example with all its original parts is kept at the University of Padova Museum dedicated to this important

engineer. Tullio Levi Civita graduated from the University of Padova, his native city, in mathematics. One of his teachers was Gregorio Ricci Curbastro, with whom he later collaborated on tensor calculus, an essential point of reference and

THE MASTERS A poet, writer and essayist, from 1924 he taught French literature at Padova: a dedicated anti-fascist, Diego Valeri fled to Switzerland in 1943. He resumed his teaching post in Padova after the war. In 1962, Mondadori DIEGO VALERI 1887-1976
published “Poesie”, a selection of his work from 1910 to 1960. Cesare Musatti further developed the experimental lines of research pursued by Vittorio Benussi, continuing his work by focusing particularly on the psychology of perception, testimony, suggestion and hypnosis. He

was also a leading figure in the development of psychoanalysis in Italy.
A leading light in European space research, Giuseppe Colombo taught celestial mechanics and space vectors at Padova. A consultant to the world’s leading centres, he was awarded a gold medal by NASA. Worthy GIUSEPPE COLOMBO 1920-1984

With over 57,000 registered students, the University of Padova has embraced the principle of the right to education, offering financial accommodations for deserving cases in addition to scholarships and other funding opportunities. Places at the 10 ESU halls of residence are allocated to applicants on the basis of eligibility: information about how to apply, and the relative conditions and deadlines, is published each year at www.esupd.gov.it/en. Pricing varies according to academic merit and the financial resources of the student’s immediate family, on the services provided, and on the selected location. Dining options include 6 student canteens in the city centre and one at Agripolis (Legnaro).
Card holders can benefit from a range of discounts and special deals for educational, cultural and social events and activities. A list of the deals available and locations is available on the dedicated App.
Students can also enjoy subsidized meals at 9 restaurants in the vicinity of the main university structures. Menus feature a variety of options. Food quality is guaranteed by certification systems and regular checks and inspections. Students pay between euros 2.70 and euros 5.70 for a full meal, depending on academic merit and their financial circumstances; students in receipt of scholarships receive free meals.
