A JOURNEY of a thousand miles BEGINS

Kotzebue

Nome

Welcome! I’m really happy you’re considering coming to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I’m grateful to live in Fairbanks and work at UAF, where kindness and caring, along with determination, are at the center of all we do. UAF students, staff and faculty are unique in our ability to face challenges with grit and tenderness. UAF students are a friendly, down-to-earth, freethinking bunch. They make their own paths — exploring, researching and innovating in and out of the classroom. The opportunities to challenge yourself here in Alaska are thrilling, not only at school but also in life. Ask questions. You can find a lot on our website, and we’re here to help you each step of the way. I want to help you make the decision that’s best for you. I think this is a remarkable place, and I want to show you a little about why.

Kevin Huo came to UAF from California but, far from hibernating in the frozen North, the Honors College student has traveled the world. He went to Finland with students modeling a council of Arctic countries. He rode the Sikuliaq, UAF’s ice-breaking research ship, from Alaska to Seattle. Early in 2020, he flew to Heidelberg University, where he enrolled as a UAF exchange student and is studying in German. Quarantining there to avoid COVID-19 resulted in “a very unique study-abroad experience,” he reported by email. The anthropology and political science junior said UAF has constantly placed interesting projects in his path. “So many opportunities have come along, and I’ve just picked it up and gone with it,” he said.

nanook /na•nu. k/ noun 1: A derivation of the Inupiaq Eskimo word for polar bear, nanuq. 2: Open and friendly, independent but approachable, grounded in reality and always game. Someone who eagerly draws in those around them for work, study and play. Refers to hearty individuals who are enlivened by the vast dynamic laboratory that is Alaska, where a sense of pride comes with everyday living.

Beyond the books College is more than classes and exams. It’s also friendships, shared experiences and learning to live life on your terms. Residence Life sponsors hundreds of social activities each year, so there’s always something going on. www.uaf.edu/reslife/ Room(s) to grow Depending on your age, class standing and budget, you can choose a single room or a shared apartment. In some housing, students of any gender can room together. Living-learning communities join students based on interests or identities — engineering, honors, outdoors and gender diversity. Sports for fun and fitness Six residence halls serve Fairbanks students. Cheer for UAF’s 10 Nanook athletic teams. Ski, run or walk our 26 miles of on-campus trails. Get fit at the recreation center. Climb a wall — indoors, outdoors or, in winter, ice-covered. Or join our eSports Club. Virtual community Even if you’re not on campus, you’ll be part of the community. DISCOVER WHAT YOU’RE MADE OF Opportunities at UAF mirror the landscapes of Alaska — they’re big. And you can find them not only outside your door but also on your computer. In Alaska’s center is a land of wide river valleys, with majestic Denali — North America’s highest mountain — on the southern horizon. That’s Interior Alaska, home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

On the EDGE of EVERYWH

While UAF may be surrounded by wilderness, it’s also firmly connected by fiber and satellite to the wider world. So no matter where you are or what your schedule is, you can find your place at UAF. If you can’t attend in person, try our online classes and degrees. Our highquality, accredited programs are a great way to go, whether you are starting college or polishing your skills. If you come to Fairbanks, you’ll find that seasons change fast, rushing from midnight sun to midwinter snow. Summer days can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter nights can dip below minus 40. Fairbanks still feels its gold rush roots, the days of sled dogs and sternwheelers. But today, it’s Alaska’s second largest city, with highway and air connections to Anchorage and the Lower 48. And it’s linked to the rest of the world via modern communication systems. If you’re looking for adventure and a unique, connected community, you belong here — in person or online.

EXPERIENCE

WHO’S on campus and online?

63% of incoming collegians are first-year students; 37% are transfers. 70% of our students take at least one online course.

Kevin Grimes didn’t have it easy growing up. His family lived in rough places around the U.S. before arriving in Alaska in 2017. His mom passed away during his senior year in high school, and he entered foster care. When he graduated, he had to leave his foster home. He decided to start college early, and UAF was there for him, he said. He’s now studying secondary education and history, and he found a job in the Admissions Office. “I was treated so nicely and like an adult. It was something so rare, having a whole community welcome me like that,” he said. “I knew UAF was for me.”

Two unique features have marked UAF since its earliest days, and Grace Miller has embraced both. She skis on the cross-country team, and, like many students, she lives in a cabin without running water. Miller’s pursuit of the UAF lifestyle, though, comes with an extra challenge. She does it all with just one hand, a condition since birth. And she does it well. In January 2019, she won the U.S. Paralympics national championship standing sprint race. Students like Miller often seek out “dry” cabins to cut costs and live in the woodsy neighborhoods near campus. “The only thing is I have to haul my own water,” she said.

ACADEMICS

ENHANCE your education You’ll find all kinds of ways to expand your experiences at UAF. Jump into research, even as an undergrad. Take online classes. Study abroad for a semester or two. Challenge yourself through the Honors College.

Jenessa Oviok’s nephew was born with a hole in his heart. Watching him face that challenge, while she wasn’t able to assist, helped her decide on a career. “That’s why I want to be a doctor,” she said. Oviok, from Utqiaġvik on Alaska’s northernmost coast, said she chose to start at UAF because it has strong biology and science courses. That will give her a good foundation for medical school. Oviok’s classes also have included one whose subject she’s found very familiar — a course in the Iñupiaq language, which her grandmother taught in Utqiaġvik schools for 35 years.

Kahryn Buchanan didn’t like math until she started taking a college-level course. At age 13. Now she can’t seem to get enough. After earning enough credits in high school to obtain an associate degree from Kodiak College, she came to UAF. She’s studying mechanical engineering, computer science and math, seeking degrees in all three within four years. She’d like to work in space exploration. Kodiak Island has a rocket facility, but she never quite got to see a launch. “Me and my mom used to drive out there all the time. That was definitely a motivator,” she said.
