A lo largo de este tiempo ha ido desarrollando una infraestructura académica y administrativa que ha ganado solidez y eficacia con la creación, en enero de 2009, de La Casa de las Lenguas, un centro que responde a la estrategia de internacionalización de nuestra universidad y que cuenta con dos subdirecciones: una dedicada a organizar y a potenciar la oferta lingüística destinada a los estudiantes que vienen anualmente dentro de programas de movilidad (Erasmus y Convenios), así como atraer a un mayor número de extranjeros que deseen mejorar su formación en lengua española. La otra subdirección atiende las necesidades de formación en lenguas modernas de toda la comunidad universitaria, para dar respuesta a los nuevos retos que debemos afrontar en el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior, donde la comunicación multilingüe será fundamental para el éxito de nuestra integración. Asimismo, la Casa de las Lenguas incorpora un servicio de traducción especializada, oferta de cursos de idiomas y asesoramiento lingüístico para los miembros de la Comunidad Universitaria, público en general y empresas e instituciones del Principado de Asturias.

STUDYING SPANISH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OVIEDO THE CASA DE LAS LENGUAS CENTRE The University of Oviedo, one of the oldest universities in Spain, was founded in 1574 and began its teaching activity in 1608. Today, more than 400 years after its creation, it is a prestigious academic institution, offering a wide range of study programmes as well as multiple cultural and sport activities. With over thirty research and teaching centres specialized in different fields of study, the university holds a firm belief in universality, which is evidenced by its numerous cooperation agreements with universities from all over the world. Since 1978, the University of Oviedo has been organizing Courses in Spanish Language and Culture for Foreign Students. During these years, the courses have gained academic and organizational solidity, now reinforced by their being integrated into the recently created Casa de las Lenguas (House of Languages), which, from January 2009, has become the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s driving force to foster the international scope of the institution. The new centre has two main divisions. One of them takes care of the Spanish language courses aimed at the students who come to this university under an Erasmus agreement or other exchange agreements and at increasing the numbers of foreign students willing to learn Spanish in northern Spain. The other division is intended to facilitate the integration of the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s students and personnel into the multilingual European Space for Higher Education, by providing them with a wide choice of foreign language courses. The House also offers translation, interpretation and other linguistic services to the general public and the private and public firms and institutions of the Principality of Asturias.

El Principado de Asturias Estudiar en la Universidad de Oviedo permite profundizar en el aprendizaje del español disfrutando al mismo tiempo de todo lo que tiene que ofrecer el Principado de Asturias, una comunidad autónoma con un rico legado artístico del que destacan los monumentos prerrománicos declarados por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad y que ofrece propuestas muy variadas de turismo activo, cultural y gastronómico. La Universidad de Oviedo se organiza en diversos campus ubicados en Oviedo, Gijón, Mieres y Avilés, cuatro ciudades que se encuentran en el centro del Principado de Asturias, en un radio de 30 Km. Esta región, que cuenta con una población cercana al millón cien mil habitantes, se halla situada en el extremo noroccidental de la Península Ibérica. El mar Cantábrico la limita por el norte y la Cordillera Cantábrica constituye la frontera sur. Esta privilegiada situación geográfica le ha merecido su denominación de “Paraíso Natural”, ya que presenta tres zonas diferenciadas: una de alta montaña, donde se alzan los Picos de Europa con cimas de gran altura y belleza; una segunda, de sierras interiores, valles estrechos, prados y bosques, que se extiende en descenso desde la montaña hasta la costa; y un área litoral, rocosa, con numerosos acantilados y bonitas playas y rías. El clima, fundamentalmente atlántico, con temperaturas suaves y abundantes lluvias todo el año, favorece la existencia de una variada y rica vegetación, cuyos mejores exponentes son el Bosque de Muniellos y el Parque Natural de Covadonga. Su cultura tiene un origen muy antiguo. Pinturas prehistóricas, termas y restos romanos, castros celtas, monumentos prerrománicos que definen un estilo arquitectónico propio, monumentos de arte románico y gótico son algunas de las manifestaciones artísticas que en se han desarrollado en Asturias. La ciudad de Oviedo, situada en el centro geográfico de Asturias, es la capital del Principado de Asturias y centro administrativo, político, comercial y cultural de la región. Gijón, emplazada en el centro de la costa asturiana, constituye uno de los principales núcleos turísticos de la región, con puertos comercial y deportivo, playas, una intensa vida cultural y numerosos museos. A menos de 30 km de las dos anteriores y a sólo 15 del Aeropuerto, se encuentra Avilés, pequeña ciudad con un importante puerto pesquero y bonitas playas. Cuenta con un casco antiguo de origen medieval declarado conjunto histórico-artístico-monumental y es la sede del Centro Cultural de los Premios Príncipe de Asturias diseñado por el prestigioso arquitecto brasileño Oscar Niemeyer. 4

The Principality of Asturias

The Principality of Asturias Studying at the University of Oviedo provides students with the opportunity to learn Spanish and, at the same time, enjoy everything the Principality of Asturias has to offer, from its rich artistic legacy, which includes a series of preRomanesque monuments that have been declared Heritage Sites by UNESCO, to its traditional foods and a large variety of cultural and sports activities. The facilities of the University of Oviedo are organized around different campuses in Oviedo, Gijón, Mieres and Avilés, four towns within a 30-km radius in the centre of the Principality of Asturias. This region, with a population of nearly 1,100,000, is situated in the far north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bounded by the Bay of Biscay to the north and the Cantabrian mountain range to the south. This privileged geographical location has won Asturias the name “Natural Paradise”, as we may distinguish three different areas in it: a mountainous area, where the Picos de Europa reach summits of great height and beauty; an area of inland mountain ranges, narrow valleys, meadows and woodlands, which go from the lofty mountains down to the coast; and a rugged coastline with numerous cliffs, beautiful beaches and river estuaries. The climate, which is basically Atlantic, with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall all year round, favours the existence of rich and varied vegetation, the best examples of which are the Muniellos Forest Reserve and the Picos de Europa National Park. The origins of Asturian culture go back to ancient times. Prehistoric cave paintings, Roman baths and other Roman remains, Celtic settlements, Asturian pre-Romanesque monuments, and Romanesque and Gothic monuments are some of the art-forms that have developed in Asturias. The city of Oviedo, situated in central Asturias, is the capital of the Principality and the administrative, political, commercial and cultural centre of the region. Gijón, set in the central area of the Asturian coast, is one the region’s main tourist destination, with a commercial port, a marina, busy beaches, and plenty of museums and buzzing cultural activity. Avilés, about 20 miles away from these two main cities and some 10 miles away from the airport, is a coastal town with a busy fishing port, which is also close to some of the region’s beautiful beaches. Its mediaeval quarter has been declared as Historic-Artistic Heritage. The town is home to the Príncipe de Asturias Cultural Centre, designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. 5

Programa de español general dirigido a estudiantes sin conocimientos del idioma o con conocimientos muy elementales. Atiende al desarrollo integrado de las cuatro destrezas básicas: expresión oral, comprensión auditiva, expresión escrita y comprensión lectora. Pruebas de nivel idiomático finales que habilitan al alumno que las supere para acceder, si lo desea, al nivel Intermedio del Programa de Lengua y Cultura siguiente. Controles de evaluación mensuales. Máximo de 15 alumnos por aula. Los estudiantes deben asistir como mínimo al 80% de las clases para tener derecho a realizar los exámenes y a los diplomas acreditativos. Clases de lunes a viernes, 2 horas diarias. Se requiere un mínimo de 6 estudiantes matriculados.

1. ELEMENTARY SPANISH PROGRAMME (A1) •

An elementary Spanish programme aimed at foreign students with little or no prior knowledge of the language. It is focused on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. A pass in the course’s final language achievement test will enable students to move up to the intermediate level of the Programme in Spanish Language and Culture. Ÿ Monthly assessment tests will be administered. The maximum number of students per class will be 15. Attending a minimum of 80% of the course sessions is a requirement for the final exam and for the final diploma. Classes are held Monday to Friday, two hours per day. A minimum of six students is required for courses to be held.

2. PROGRAMAS DE LENGUA Y CULTURA ESPAÑOLAS PARA EXTRANJEROS • •

Dirigidos a estudiantes con conocimientos medios de español. Al inicio de cada programa se realiza una prueba de nivel idiomático. Combinan la enseñanza del idioma, objetivo principal, con una panorámica amplia y profunda sobre la cultura y la sociedad españolas. A tal fin se ofertan tanto asignaturas de Lengua Española y Traducción como de Historia, Arte, Literatura, Cine, Español de los negocios, Sociedad y cultura españolas. Tres cursos: Curso Trimestral (octubre-diciembre), Curso Semestral (enero-mayo) y Curso Anual (octubre-mayo), para aquellos estudiantes que permanecen todo el curso académico en Oviedo. La inscripción en los cursos permite realizar hasta un máximo de 5 asignaturas (Curso completo) elegidas por el estudiante entre todas las que se ofertan. Los estudiantes matriculados en los cursos deberán escoger obligatoriamente al menos una de las siguientes asignaturas: Lengua española: expresión e interacción escritas / Lengua española: expresión e interacción orales. Máximo de 20 alumnos por grupo en las clases de Lengua Española. Las asignaturas de Lengua Española se imparten en 4 niveles: Intermedio I (A2), Intermedio II (B1), Avanzado I (B2) y Avanzado II (C1) Cada uno de ellos se desdoblará, si es necesario, atendiendo al número de estudiantes por grupo. Las asignaturas de cultura se imparten en dos niveles (Intermedio y Avanzado). Cualquiera de las asignaturas ofrecidas podrá suprimirse si no es elegida al menos por cinco alumnos. Durante el Curso Trimestral las asignaturas de Lengua Española tienen una carga de 4 horas semanales. Las demás, de 3 horas semanales. Algunas de las asignaturas ofertadas, aunque mantengan el mismo nombre (como Lengua española: expresión e interacción escritas, Lengua española: vocabulario, Traducción, Arte...) cambian el temario y las actividades de uno a otro curso, incluso en el mismo nivel. El primer día del curso se entrega a los alumnos el programa detallado con el calendario de clases y actividades complementarias, horarios, aulas, asignaturas, sistema de exámenes y trabajos, y todos cuantos detalles requiere el buen funcionamiento del Curso.

2. SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAMMES •

These programmes are aimed at learners of Spanish as a foreign language who have an intermediate knowledge of the language. A placement test will be conducted at the beginning of each programme. These programmes combine the learning of the language, which is their main objective, with a comprehensive overview of Spanish culture and society. They, therefore, include subjects such as Spanish Language, Translation, History, Art, Literature, Business Spanish and Spanish Society and Culture. There are three different courses: the Three-Month Course (from October to December), the Five-Month Course (from January to May) and the Fullyear Course for those students spending the whole academic year in Oviedo. Enrolment in one of these programmes allows students to take part in up to five different subjects. Students who have enrolled must choose at least one of these subjects: Spanish Language: interacting through writing / Spanish Language: interacting through oral expression. The maximum number of students per class will be 20. All Spanish Language courses are taught at four different levels: Intermediate I (A2), Intermediate II (B1), Advanced I (B2) and Advanced II (C1). Depending on the number of students enrolled, each of these levels will be split as needed. The Spanish culture subjects are taught at two different levels: Intermediate and Advanced. For courses to be held, a minimum of five students will be required. The Three-Month Course includes four hours of Spanish and three hours of all the other subjects per week. In spite of sharing course names (e.g. Spanish Language: interacting through writing, Spanish Language: vocabulary, Translation, Art, …) the course contents and activities are different, even for courses taught at the same level of competence. During the introductory session each student will receive a programme with precise details on the programme calendar, timetable, classrooms, courses, assessment system, homework, extra-curricular activities and any other necessary information for the smooth running of the courses. 11

3. SEMANA DE BIENVENIDA ERASMUS El objetivo fundamental de la semana de bienvenida es orientar y facilitar la adaptación de los estudiantes Erasmus a la universidad y a la ciudad en las primeras semanas de su estancia en Oviedo. Para conseguir este objetivo se han programado actividades como las siguientes: 1. Información práctica para desenvolverse en la ciudad: trámites burocráticos, asistencia sanitaria, cuentas bancarias, transporte público, planos de la ciudad, etc. 2. La Universidad de Oviedo: historia, organización, infraestructuras, recursos y servicios. 3. Lengua española en contexto comunicativo. 4. El Principado de Asturias: historia, arte, cultura y sociedad. 5. Visita guiada por la zona antigua de Oviedo partiendo del edificio histórico de la universidad, con visita a la Biblioteca central. 6. Visita guiada por Gijón. 7. Actividades de ocio complementarias: Noche de tapas y Fiesta Internacional de Bienvenida.

3. ERASMUS WELCOME WEEK The main aim of the welcome week is to inform and help Erasmus students to adapt to the new academic environment and to the city during the first weeks of their stay in Oviedo. The following activities have been devised to meet this goal: 1. Practical information on the city: public administration offices, health care system, bank accounts, public transport, city maps, etc. 2. The University of Oviedo: history, governance, facilities, resources and services. 3. Communicating in Spanish. 4. The Principality of Asturias: history, art, culture and society. 5. A guided tour of Oviedo’s old quarter, starting from the University historical building and including a visit to its library. 6. A guided tour of Gijón. 7. Other entertainment activities: tapas night and international welcome party.

4. PROGRAMA INTENSIVO DE ESPAÑOL PARA ESTUDIANTES DE PROGRAMAS DE INTERCAMBIO UNIVERSITARIO (ERASMUS, TEMPUS...) •

La Universidad de Oviedo ofrece a los estudiantes de los programas de intercambio universitario (Becas Erasmus, Tempus, Convenios de Cooperación, etc.) dos cursos de apoyo idiomático con el doble objetivo de facilitar su integración en las distintas Facultades o Escuelas donde cursan sus estudios reglados y de acercarlos a la cultura y sociedad asturianas. Dos cursos de 40 horas (4 ECTS): Intensivo de Otoño e Intensivo de Primavera. Dos horas diarias, 4 semanas. Las clases se imparten en Oviedo (Campus de Humanidades y Campus Científico “El Cristo”) y en Gijón (Campus de Viesques). Para tener derecho a examen y al Diploma de la Universidad de Oviedo es imprescindible asistir como mínimo a un 80% de las clases. Los alumnos de estos programas pueden matricularse de las asignaturas que deseen del Programa de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros abonando una cuota especial reducida de 160 € por asignatura del Curso Trimestral o de 180 € por asignatura del Curso Semestral. Programa financiado íntegramente por la Universidad de Oviedo. Los estudiantes solo habrán de abonar la cantidad de 60 € en el Curso Intensivo de Otoño o de 63 € en el Curso Intensivo de Primavera, como tasas de inscripción, derecho a examen y expedición del diploma acreditativo. Los estudiantes de estancia anual que deseen realizar también el Curso Intensivo de Primavera abonarán además la cantidad de 189 €.

4. INTENSIVE SPANISH PROGRAMME FOR INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS (ERASMUS, TEMPUS...) •

The University of Oviedo offers international exchange students (Erasmus, Tempus and other exchange agreements) two intensive language courses in order to, on the one hand, accelerate their integration into the Faculties or Schools where they are taking their regular modules and, on the other hand, introduce them to Asturian culture and society: There is an Autumn Intensive Course and a Spring Intensive Course. Both courses run for 40 hours (4 ECTS credits): 2 hours per day over four weeks. The Casa de las Lenguas courses are taught in two of the campuses in Oviedo (Campus de Humanidades, “El Milán”, and Campus Científico, “El Cristo”) as well as in Gijón (Campus de Viesques). Students must attend a mínimum of 80% of the classes in order to to have the right to take the final exam and to obtain the final diploma. Students on these courses can also enrol in any of the subjects from the Spanish Language and Culture Programmes, for a reduced fee (€160 per subject in the 3-month course and €180 in the 5-month course). These intensive courses are financed entirely by the University of Oviedo. Students will only be required to pay €60 in the Autumn Intensive Course and €63 in the Spring Intensive Course, to cover the costs of enrolment and the diploma issued at the end. Full-year students who wish to take both the Autumn and the Spring intensive courses must pay an additional fee of €189.

PROGRAMACIÓN ACADÉMICA Las sesiones diarias se reparten de la siguiente manera: PRIMERA SESIÓN: 9.30 a 11.30 h: Gramática y Vocabulario en el contexto comunicativo; Interpretación de textos. SEGUNDA SESIÓN: 12.00 a 13.00 h.: Taller de escritura. A partir de los materiales que aporta el profesor se realiza una clase práctica sobre cuestiones de expresión e interacción escrita. TERCERA SESIÓN: 13.00 a 14.00 horas. Módulo de conversación o de cultura hispánica. Cada curso se organiza por módulos quincenales (1 hora diaria) independientes entre sí. Al comienzo de las clases el estudiante selecciona entre los cuatro ofertados los módulos que desea realizar. Los estudiantes de nivel elemental continúan sus clases de español.

ACADEMIC SYLLABUS The course sessions are scheduled as follows: FIRST SESSION: 09:30 to 11:30 Communicative Grammar and Vocabulary; Text Analysis. 6. PROGRAMA DE HERENCIA HISPANA Es un programa especialmente diseñado para los llamados hablantes de herencia, aquellos que a través de la interacción familiar fueron criados en un país de lengua no hispana pero en un ambiente de gran conexión cultural con el español. Estos estudiantes han crecido oyendo y, posiblemente hablando, en español en su entorno familiar, pero se sienten más cómodos en el idioma dominante de su país. No obstante, poseen una elevada motivación para perfeccionar su idioma “de herencia” y buscan una reconexión con sus raíces familiares. En muchos casos presentan un buen nivel de desarrollo de la expresión oral aunque a menudo carecen de escolarización suficiente en su lengua de herencia y suelen desconocer su registro formal, al haberla adquirido casi única y exclusivamente en contextos y situaciones de naturaleza informal y familiar. Así pues, los contenidos teóricos y las actividades prácticas que se recogen en este programa intentan cubrir, en buena medida, esas carencias.

6. HISPANIC HERITAGE PROGRAMME This course is especially addressed to the so-called heritage speakers, those who grew up in a non-Spanish speaking country but in an environment where Spanish culture had a strong influence. These students are likely to have listened to, and probably spoken, Spanish at home but feel more confident with the language of the country where they have been raised. Nevertheless, they feel strongly motivated to brush up their heritage language and seek a return to their roots. Often, these students speak the language fluently but, not having received their education in Spanish, they are not usually familiar with more formal registers. Therefore, the main theory contents and practical activities dealt with in the course are aimed at developing these linguistic abilities. ACADEMIC PROGRAMME The course contents are organised in three different modules: Language and communication module: 40 hours (two hours a day) 9:30 to 11:30. Spanish and Latin-American Literature module: 20 hours (one hour a day) 12:00 to 13:00. History, art and society module: 20 hours (one hour a day) 13:00 to 14:00

7. PROGRAMAS TÁNDEM Y A-DUO En el aprendizaje de lenguas en tándem dos hablantes con distintas lenguas maternas colaboran para mejorar los conocimientos de las respectivas lenguas y culturas: saber más sobre la otra persona, su idioma y su entorno. A través del Programa de Aprendizaje de Lenguas en Tándem, la Universidad de Oviedo organiza los encuentros entre estudiantes españoles y estudiantes de otras nacionalidades interesados en utilizar este sistema de aprendizaje. Los estudiantes de español, francés, alemán, italiano e inglés, cuentan con el apoyo de personas que se encargan de formar las parejas y de proporcionarles ayuda en forma de materiales y consejos prácticos para optimizar el aprendizaje, organizar encuentros, etc., así como de realizar un seguimiento de aquellas parejas que deseen obtener un certificado de su participación en el programa. Los estudiantes que lo deseen podrán beneficiarse mediante el programa “a-dUO” de la ayuda de un estudiante español de su mismo Campus, que pueden facilitarle la integración en la vida universitaria proporcionándole consejo y orientación sobre el alojamiento, el transporte, la vida en el Campus y otras cuestiones prácticas.

7. TANDEM AND A-DUO PROGRAMMES In tandem language learning, two people with different mother tongues cooperate to improve their knowledge of the foreign language and culture: to learn about their partners, their language and their cultural background. Through the Tandem Learning Programme, the University of Oviedo organizes the learning partnerships for students willing to take part in this learning experience. When the languages involved are Spanish combined with French, Italian, German or English, the University also provides support in the form of learning materials, tips and regular monitoring, which are compulsory for those students who want to receive a Tandem Certificate. Through the a-dUO programme, foreign students who wish to join it will receive help from a Spanish student studying at the same campus. The aim is to facilitate their integration in University life, providing them with useful advice on accommodation, public transport, life on campus and other practical matters.

8. EXAMEN Y CURSO PREPARATORIO PARA LA OBTENCIÓN DEL D.E.LE. La Universidad de Oviedo es Centro Examinador Oficial para la obtención del D.E.L.E. (Diploma del Español como Lengua Extranjera) expedido por el Ministerio de Educación y el Instituto Cervantes. Los exámenes se realizan en los meses de mayo y noviembre según el calendario establecido por el Instituto Cervantes. PRUEBAS DE NIVEL IDIOMÁTICO Y EVALUACIONES El primer día de clase los alumnos realizan una prueba para determinar el grado de conocimiento que poseen de la lengua española y el nivel que les corresponde. Las evaluaciones se repiten con el fin de medir y controlar los progresos del grupo y de cada uno de sus miembros durante el curso. Los alumnos se entrevistan personalmente con sus profesores para comentar los resultados. Los últimos días del programa se reservan para realizar los exámenes finales. ACTIVIDADES CULTURALES COMPLEMENTARIAS Como complemento a la actividad académica, se ofrece un programa de actividades culturales y recreativas en las que los alumnos participan como protagonistas activos bajo la supervisión de los profesores: 1) Jornadas sobre Sociedad y Cultura Españolas (talleres de periodismo digital, de fotoperiodismo, de baile, de radio, de relatos, de gastronomía, de fotografía, de cómic,...). 2) Ciclos de cine español. 3) Concursos literarios de relatos cortos. 4) Concurso-exposición de fotografía. 5) Visitas a lugares de interés artístico o paisajístico. 6) Días temáticos, en los que la actividad en las clases se centra en temas de especial interés histórico, social, cultural (el Carnaval, el Quijote, Asturias…). El objetivo es doble: por un lado, profundizar de manera directa en el conocimiento fuera del aula de distintos aspectos de la cultura española y asturiana; por otro, servir como «tareas» (proyectos y actividades de uso lingüístico) que permitan la práctica de los conocimientos adquiridos de la lengua y la cultura españolas mediante actividades coordinadas por los profesores. En las actividades extraacadémicas colaboran jóvenes graduados, estudiantes de postgrado del Máster en Español como Lengua Extranjera y miembros de asociaciones como AEGEE (http://www.aegeeoviedo.org/) y ESN (http://www.facebook.com/people/Esn-Oviedo-Asturias). AEGEE (Association des Etats Généraux des Etudiants de l’Europe / European Students’ Forum) es una organización de estudiantes que promueve la cooperación, la comunicación y la integración entre jóvenes europeos. Como asociación no gubernamental, sin ánimo de lucro y políticamente independiente, está abierta a estudiantes de todas las Facultades y disciplinas. Hoy en día cuenta con unos 13.000 miembros activos en más de 200 universidades de 40 países europeos, lo que hace de ella una de las asociaciones de estudiantes más grande de Europa. ESN (Erasmus Student Network) es una de las asociaciones de estudiantes más grandes de Europa, fundada en 1989 para desarrollar el intercambio de estudiantes. ESN está presente en 339 Universidades de 34 países. ESN Oviedo prepara cada curso un programa de actividades (viajes, excursiones, cine, baile…) para que los estudiantes extranjeros puedan disfrutar de la ciudad de Oviedo y de la región de Asturias, además de conocer otras ciudades españolas. 36

PLACEMENT TESTS AND ASSESSMENT On the first day of each programme students are given a placement test which will determine their level of Spanish and the group they should be put in. Assessment continues throughout the course in order to evaluate the progress of each group as a whole and of each individual student. Students can discuss their results individually with their tutors. The final days of each programme are devoted to final exams. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES As a complement to the lectures, there is a programme of cultural and leisure activities with the students playing the leading role under the tutors’ guidance and supervision: 1) Seminars on Spanish culture and society (workshops on digital journalism, photo-journalism, dancing, radio broadcasting, storytelling, cooking, cartoon design, photography, etc.) 2) Spanish cinema series 3) Short-story competitions 4) Photography competition and exhibition. 5) Sightseeing of landscapes and places of artistic interest. 6) One-theme days in which all classes focus on a topic of special social, historical or cultural interest (El Quijote, Carnival, Asturias, etc). These activities serve a double purpose: on the one hand, they give students the opportunity to acquire indepth knowledge of different aspects of Spanish and Asturian culture outside the classroom environment; on the other hand, they are designed as “tasks” (projects and activities for the use of the language) through which students will practice the contents learnt in the Spanish language and culture courses taught and coordinated by their teachers. Students enrolled in the Master in Spanish as a Foreign Language, Ph.D. students and young graduates members of students unions like AEGEE and ESN collaborate in extracurricular activities. AEGEE (Association des Etats Généraux des Etudiants de l’Europe) was founded with the aim to unify young people in Europe in order to foster democracy, human rights, European dimension in education and to strive for creating an open and tolerant society. One of AEGEE’s major goals has always been the promotion of European Integration. is a student organisation that promotes co-operation, communication and integration amongst young people in Europe. As a non-governmental, politically independent and non-profit organisation AEGEE is open to students and young people from all faculties and disciplines – today it counts 13.000 members, active in more than 200 university cities in 40 European countries, making it the biggest interdisciplinary student association in Europe. ESN (Erasmus Student Network) is one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe, founded in 1989 for supporting and developing student exchange. ESN is present in 339 Higher Education Institutions from 34 countries. ESN Oviedo has prepared a program with activities (tips, movies, dancing…) so that international students can enjoy the city of Oviedo and Asturias region, as well as meet other Spanish cities. 37

DIPLOMAS Y CERTIFICADOS DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE OVIEDO La Universidad de Oviedo expide para los estudiantes de todos sus programas un Diploma de Asistencia y Conocimientos. Para la obtención de este Diploma es necesaria la asistencia al 80% de las clases. En él se hace constar, además del programa en que se ha matriculado el estudiante, el número de horas, el nivel que ha seguido y su correspondencia con los establecidos en el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia, y, en su caso, la calificación obtenida en el examen final.

PROFESORES Nuestros Cursos de español para extranjeros cuentan con la colaboración regular de profesores doctores de la Universidad de Oviedo de los Departamentos de Filología Española, Filología Clásica y Románica, Filología Anglogermánica y Francesa, Historia, Arte y Geografía, especialistas en materias como Lengua Española y Traducción Inglés-Español. Contamos, asimismo, con una plantilla de profesores con una amplia experiencia y formación específica en la enseñanza de lengua y cultura a estudiantes extranjeros. Algunos de ellos son también diseñadores de materiales.

ALOJAMIENTO Preferentemente en familias españolas o en viviendas compartidas con otros universitarios españoles o extranjeros. En los cursos de verano se ofrecen además las Residencias Universitarias. La Casa de las Lenguas y el Vicerrectorado de Internacionalización y Cooperación al Desarrollo de la Universidad de Oviedo facilitan ayuda a los estudiantes extranjeros para encontrar alojamiento, y ponen a su disposición una base de datos de familias de acogida y de pisos para alquilar.

General information

CERTIFICATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF OVIEDO The University of Oviedo will issue a Certificate of Attendance and Performance to all students who have enrolled in these programmes and have attended at least 80% of the classes. Each Certificate specifies the programme the student has attended, the number of hours, the level (and the corresponding level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages –CEFR-) and, where appropriate, the grade obtained in the final exam.

LECTURERS All these courses are partly taught by PhD faculty and qualified lecturers from different Departments of the University of Oviedo, specialized in subjects such as Spanish or English-Spanish Translation. There is also a group of experienced lecturers, who form the permanent staff of the Casa de las Lenguas and are specialized in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. Some of them are also regular course designers.

ACCOMMODATION Accommodation is mostly provided in host families or in flats shared with other universtiy students (Spanish or foreign). University halls of residence are offered, together with the previous types of accommodation, for the Summer Programmes. La Casa de las Lenguas and the International Office (Servicio de Internacionalización y Cooperación al Desarrollo) have developed a data base with flats and host families where students can find the accommodation style that suits them best.
