Ambali thanks NLNG for Engineering Research Centre project He said, “I appreciate your high level of commitment and quality of the work done. The building stands out and that makes us proud”. The NLNG chief explained that the selection of the University of Ilorin for the project was borne out of its antecedents as a top-ranking tertiary institution by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and other global ranking agencies' standard. Dr. Eresia-Eke said that the University of Ilorin is always on the lips of the management team of the NLNG for several good reasons, assuring that the interaction between the two organisations would continue to blossom. He stated further that each time the NLNG team visits the institution, they always have the feeling that they are in a true university, pointing out, “Your students are well-cultured; you must be really doing something that is different, that is unique and no wonder you are better by far”. Mr. Ladokun disclosed that the Federal Government, which f u n d s t h e I T F, n o w p a y s allowances to the students directly in order that the students may gain employable skills for which the ITF designed SIWES. The Manager said, “If we sincerely want to grow the economy, we must grow the people. The only way to make this work is for all the stakeholders to faithfully come together for the sake of patriotism and make human capital development a realizable goal. The implication is this, skills acquisition must go beyond a theoretical knowledge that is

imparted under classroom situation. It must take into cognizance all its practical aspects towards solving shortage of skills that is plaguing the country.” He also noted that skills acquisition, industriousness, creativity, effective performance and productivity are important factors that can greatly propel the nation towards development and growth. Mr. Ladokun advised the students to wisely key into this scheme with all the seriousness it deserves so that they can join the league of great leaders of tomorrow, adding that the emphasis of higher education today has shifted from generating suitable employees in higher institutions to training and graduating students who will become employers of labour. In his own speech at the event, the Director of the SIWES, University of Ilorin, Prof. Kolade Joseph, described the scheme as a mandatory skill acquisition programme designed for students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria to bridge the gap between theory and practice of Engineering and Technology, Sciences, Agriculture, Medicine, Management and other

They may not be

4

ready yet but we will nurture them”. He said that the company, which has been in Nigeria for over 100 years, sees it as a way of giving back to the society. Salako, has enjoined the graduating medical students and young medical practitioners to learn both hard and soft skills that will enable them stand out in the face of the economic challenges facing the country. Prof. Salako gave the advice penultimate Wednesday (May 11, 2016) while delivering a lecture at the Academic Seminar organised by the 2016 Graduating Medical Class of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin. In the lecture, entitled “Making a Comfortable Living with Medical Profession in the Face of Economic Meltdown: A Time to Avoid Auto-Destruct Syndrome”, Prof. Salako explained that economic meltdown is a “sudden downturn in the state of a nation's economy, where many people are unemployed or underemployed, companies going out of businesses,

T

wages and workers benefits dropping or its real value reducing”. He defined comfortable living as a condition “free of pains, vexation, tension or stress, a situation of pleasant feelings of ease, enjoyment, relaxing, contentment or having security, etc”. The erudite Professor counseled the graduating medical students to imbibe the five D's of prosperity, which, according to him, are: Desire, Decision, Determination, Discipline and Derivation. He told his audience, “The amount of money you are able to attract in your life will be in direct ratio to the intensity of your desire”. Prof. Salako said, “Making a resolute decision to prosper and seriously working towards it will be helpful. Again, convincing yourself of the need to prosper and being determined to prosper is essential. You also need to be disciplined by staying on track, being focused and being frugal. Deriving stupendous

prosperity will come from following the first 4 Ds”. Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab B.R. Johnson, who was represented by the former Provost of the College and Chairman of the occasion, Prof. A.B Omotoso, recalled that it has been the tradition of the University of Ilorin graduating medical students to organise academic seminar for students on the path to follow after graduation since 1976 – 1977 when the College of Health Sciences came into being. In his own remarks, Prof. E. Ernest, a lecturer in the College, said that “life” simply means “Learning Is For Ever”. Prof. Ernest shared his personal experiences during his school days, noting that there are five levels in the life of every human being. “These”, according to him, “are struggling, surviving, stability, success and significant levels”.

Yet another giant leap!

D

espite the desperate plot by enemies of success to disrupt the steady strides of the University of Ilorin and probably obfuscate its well-acknowledged contributions to national development, the Better by far citadel remains undaunted and unwavering in its set target “to be an international Centre of Excellence in learning, research and service to humanity”. The University, under the ever-dynamic leadership of Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), again made a big catch on Friday, May 6, 2016 when it signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with an American company, Arrow Capital Nigeria Limited for the development of a 500megawatts (MW) Solar Farm on the University campus to produce solar-generated green energy for use by the University, as well as for sale to other electricity users in Kwara State and even beyond! According to the MoA, the $2.3 billion (about N600 billion) Solar Project “shall consist of the dedicated property, photo voltaic collectors and associated structures, wiring, converters, transformers, plumbing, access roads, buildings and open space”. At the MoA signing ceremony, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Arrow Capital, Mr. Brian A. Travis, said that the project would commence immediately and would be completed within five months. To be sure, this venture, on completion, will be another giant leap by the nation's number one University in its sustained efforts to advance the cause of national development. Not only would the project substantially contribute to the improvement of national electricity power generation and dustribution, as it would provide 10 per cent of Nigeria's total power need, it will also trigger off a series of multiplier upshots that would eventually launch the University and its environs into the orbit of frenzied economic activities. Like the proverbial sugar that effortlessly attracts a swarm of ants, the University of Ilorin will continue to attract the attention of all people of goodwill. This assertion would seem to have been corroborated by the Arrow Capital boss, Mr. Brian, when he disclosed his company's reason for citing the multi-billion naira project on the soil of the University. According to him, Unilorin was chosen for the project because of the legendary culture of excellence it had put in place coupled with its stable academic calendar in the last 16 years. This, he said, is a great assurance of security for the project. And of course, these two reasons, in addition to the centrality of the location of the University in the North Central Zone of the country, make it ideal to transmit power generated to Kano and Lagos. In his remarks at the MoA signing event, the ViceChancellor of the University, Prof. Ambali, described the project as an opportunity to contribute to the effort of the

Federal Government in terms of power generation and distribution. Prof. Ambali, who stated that the project would guarantee 24-hour power supply to the University, disclosed that since the University consumes only about 4 megawatts (MW) of electricity, the remaining would be sold to the nation. The visibly elated Vice-Chancellor disclosed that a solar panel assembly plant would also be built at the University as part of the project. Prof. Ambali said that the project would enhance the academic pursuits of the institution's Engineering students and their entrepreneurial skills, as it would provide a ready avenue for practical lessons for them. Before this multi-billion naira solar power project, the University of Ilorin had been in the news for its commitment to register its relevance in the nation's sustained efforts to overcome some developmental challenges. At its 247th meeting on June 30, 2015, the Senate of the University approved a proposal to establish a Centre for Renewable Energy. This was part of the University's contribution to the government's concerted effort to find a lasting solution to the nation's energy challenge that is fast assuming intractable dimensions. When established, the Unilorin Renewable Energy Centre (UREC) will conduct research and training that will enhance the development and application of renewable energy resources as important component of alternative energy sources that is desired for the realisation of a stable and reliable energy sector in the country. Above all, the centre will promote renewable energies development with the aim of making rural areas self-sufficient in energy and food production. At the same meeting, the University Senate also approved the establishment of a Laboratory to Industrial Product “LABTOP” Centre to create a link between the University and industry for the purpose of promoting wide knowledge and application of the outcomes of research with potential for industrial application. Also remarkable are the University's welldocumented giant strides in the area of advancing the vistas of the nation's revenue generation efforts. The University is already engaged in certain economic ventures that, at maturation, could directly enhance its internally generated revenue and, indirectly, boost the nation's economy. The Unilorin oil palm plantation, the Moringa plantation and the Moringa industry, the Jatropha plantation, the Teak plantation and other economic trees that are the wonderful initiatives of the University administration are some of the potential revenue earners that will, in due course, take Unilorin to greater heights.
