Unilorin medical school ranks 3rd best By Balqis Jimoh, Abdullah Adeleke and Abdulmumini Gboyega

T

he College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, has been ranked as the third best medical college in Nigeria after the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. This was revealed last Tuesday, (October 4, 2016) by the Clinical Director, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Ebun Ladipo Bamgboye, who was the Guest Lecturer at the oath taking and induction into the medical profession of the first batch of the 2016 graduating class of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin. Dr. Bamgboye, who is also a Consultant Nephrologist, noted that this feat has shown that the University's College of Health Sciences can be on the top of the first

ten medical programmes in Nigeria in no distant time. The revelation of the medical practitioner has been corroborated by the website, www.students.com.ng, which revealed that other medical colleges ranked are those of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on the 4th position followed by the University of Lagos,.The 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th best medical colleges are listed as the Lagos State University, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Delta State University, Abraka, the Niger Delta University and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in that order. The physician also disclosed that there are 31 accredited medical schools and nine accredited dental schools in the country. According to him, six out of the medical colleges

have partial accreditation and two of the dental colleges have partial accreditation. He said, “Each of the medical schools produce between 50 and 180 doctors yearly and the dental schools 10-40 dentists yearly. Altogether the medical schools produce an average of 3,000 doctors and 300 dentists every year.” One major high point of the medical initiation ceremony was the sensation created by one of the new medics, Miss Rasheedat Adedoyin Alabi, who made history as the first female graduating student to have distinction in Surgery as she graduated with the overall best result of the class.

Provost hails Ambali’s commitment to medical college’s growth In his lecture, entitled “The nexus between cutting edge, ITd r i v e n , 2 1 s t C e n t u r y To o l s , Conventional Medical Education And Clinical Practice”, the Clinical Director, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, said that for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to be improved, health technology must be kept simple, relevant and local. Dr. Bamgboye disclosed that there is a number of pilot projects that have demonstrated improvements in the productivity within the healthcare system and also improve dissemination of public health information, facilitate public discourse and dialogue around major public health threats and added value to gains expected in the involvement of ICT in health. The Guest Lecturer said that the use of Information and Communication Technology has been identified as a means of developing and organising new ways of providing efficient and cost effective health care services and in helping to achieve the MDG targets. Earlier in his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu

Ambali (OON), who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Technology and Innovation (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, congratulated the graduands and urged them to go out and compete with the challenges of the global world. Appreciating the lecturers, parents and guardians for their support to make the day real and “head-swollen”, the Vice-Chancellor said that despite the rigorous and strenuous training the students underwent, they have been adjudged the best set ever recorded by the college since inception. In his address, the Provost of the College, Prof. W. B. R. Johnson, said that in addition to the 53(comprising 38 males and 15 females) inducted, the college had inducted a total of 4,313 doctors since the inaugural event in1983. Prof. Johnson commended the Vice-Chancellor's transparent commitment, not only to ensuring the infrastructural growth of our College, but also the all-important and enviable development/capacity building of the staff and students”. The Provost said, “Since

Prof. Ambali assumed the exalted seat of leadership of this 'better by far' institution, the sustenance of the momentum of his administration's commitment to promoting excellence (on practically all fronts!) is legendary”, adding that “this has been accomplished by providing the required physical and psychosocial clime to maintain our 'pole position' as a repository of qualitative medical education in the 21st century”. Earlier in his address, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Abdulmumini Ibrahim, who administered the medical oath on the newly inducted medics, said that the Council would not hesitate to withdraw the license of any member found wanting. He warned them to represent their Alma Mater and the Council well anywhere they may found themselves. Represented by Dr. (Mrs) Zainab Saadu of the Kwara State Ministry of Health, the MDCN Registrar tasked the new medical doctors to always treat their patients with care, love, humility and compassion to the justify the duty entrusted on them.

Dignify your daily dialogues, Adedimeji tells Nigerians By Mustafa Abubakar

T

he Director of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Dr. Mahfouz Adediimeji, has urged Nigerians to embrace peaceful communication and guard against the type of communication that result in bickering, wrangling and violent conflict. Dr Adedimeji made this appeal in his presentation, “Communication in Peace and Conflict” made recently at the Conflict Management Capacity Building Retreat organised by the Centre at Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin. According to the Director, the principles of peaceful communication are four and they should always be borne in mind. These, he said, are, “ L o v e Yo u r C o m m u n i c a t i v e Neighbour; Dignify Your Daily Dialogues; Prioritise Positivisers In Your Language Use and Be A Communicative Humaniser.” The lecturer, who is also an award winning researcher, said that achieving peaceful communication is what everyone can do through three strategies which are imbibing communicative contrasts, adopting memorable alliterations and using positivisers. He noted that communicative contrasts that should be upheld in dealing with others are that communicators “don't denigrate, appreciate; don't detract, attract; don't suspect, respect; don't manipulate, cooperate; don't discard, regard; don't offend, commend; don't indoctrinate, illuminate; don't impose, propose; don't mortify, dignify; don't humiliate, humanize; don't resist, assist and don't attack (verbally), question.” The memorable alliterations that should guide interpersonal communication are given by the expert to include “AAA: Aim at affect

and amiability; BBB: Build bridges of blessings; CCC: Consider controversies constructively; DDD: Develop a democratic discourse; FFF: Foster friendship and fraternity; HHH: Honour humanity and humaneness; III: Inculcate integration and interdependence; JJJ: Join justice and peace joyfully; LLL: Lead with lifesupporting love; MMM: Multiply mediation and meditation and NNN: Nourish negotiation norms” Others mentioned in the presentation are “OOO: Opt for openheartedness and openmindedness; PPP: Perceive people as peace partners; SSS: Sustain security and solidarity; TTT: Treat others with tact and tenderness; UUU: Unite for ultimate universality; VVV: Veto violent vocabulary and WWW: Weigh your words with wisdom.” According to the Fulbright scholar, further citing Gomes de Matos, the “POSITIVISERS”, a generic term used for peace-enhancing words , that should underline one's daily dialogues and discourses are to “accept, agree, acknowledge, assist, bless, bridge, build, celebrate, commend, construct, converge, cooperate, create, democratise, develop, dignify, educate, empathize, encourage, enhance, entertain, forgive, foster, help, honour, humanise, improve, instruct, interact, like, love, praise, promote, reconcile, respect, share, support, thank, trust and unite.” He alluded to the Qu'ran, saying that peaceful communication entails walking away and saying “peace” as enshrined when Allah says, “And the servants of the Beneficent Allah are they who walk on the earth in humbleness, and when the ignorant address them, they say: Peace! (Q. ArRahman 25: 63).” He then encouraged all to relate and interact with others “affirmatively, agreeably/amicably/appreciatively,

benevolently, benignly, bigh e a r t e d l y, c a r i n g l y, c i v i c mindedly, compassionately, conciliatorily, considerately, c o r d i a l l y, c o n s t r u c t i v e l y, d i g n i f y i n g l y, d u t i f u l l y, empathetically, empoweringly, encouragingly, equitably, ethically, fairly, forgivingly, good-heartedly, good-naturedly, generously, gently, graciously, helpfully, h u m a n e l y, h u m a n i t a r i a n l y, humanisingly, humbly, honestly, h a r m o n i o u s l y, h o p e f u l l y, impartially, interdependently, joyfully, justly, kindly, lovingly, magnanimously, mercifully, nonjudgementally, nonviolently, optimistically, openly, patiently, positively, reliably, respectfully, responsibly, selflessly, sensitively, supportively, sympathetically, tactfully, tenderly, thoughtfully, t r u s t w o r t h i l y, t r u s t i n g l y, understandingly, unselfishly, virtuously and well-meaningfully. While stressing the importance of language and its chief function, communication, Dr Adedimeji said it is part of the acceptable assumptions that all the problems of the world are communication problems and that all the problems of the world can be solved through effective and functional communication. By referring to major conflicts in the world, he illustrated how i n e ff e c t i v e c o m m u n i c a t i o n eventually leads to violent conflicts and how communication is always evoked at the end of all conflicts. The one-week Conflict Management Retreat was organised in conjunction with the Africa Peace Research and Education Association and it was attended by students of the Centre as well as peace practitioners.

Philosophy of Death he news about the death of late Prof. Yekini Abayomi, the a misfortune. Maslow saw the categorical desires that drive our lives as the desire for self-fulfillment- the peak of what he called hierarchy immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, hit me of human needs. We all want to be fulfilled, and if a man is not last Wednesday with a rude shock and distress. This was not fulfilled before he dies, we see his death as premature and as a really because he was one of the academic colossuses in our misfortune. However, adopting the concept of preferentialism, death to University, but, definitely, because, by all human standards of some philosophers, is not a misfortune if a man dies at old age assessment, he was a gentle and modest man. The news of his death, because he might have been fully fulfilled and attained many of his indeed, reverberated in me a deluge of meditations on the philosophy aspirations. The belief is that if already satisfied, or given up, a desire of death. For some minutes, I was beleaguered by the metaphysical cannot be thwarted, even by death. So, as we lose our motivation for living, death ceases to be objectionable to us. Perhaps, death is bad and axiological introspections of what death really means, whether for us, then, only if it comes prematurely at a time when we still death is bad for its victim, what makes it bad to die, why people fear inordinately desire to fulfill the aspirations that propel us forward in death and what right attitude should we have toward death. My life, and, particularly, when we have a real prospect of meeting the aspirations. Perhaps, this is why there is a marked difference between reflections on all these were, of course, guided or coloured by my how young and old people see and understand death. The young have upbringing as a Muslim, my sojourn in the world of Sufism, as well as an intellectual understanding that death comes to us all, but their mortality has not become real to them. For the old, mortality has sunk my little knowledge of Western philosophy. in, and they have started being fully conscious of the imminence of One of the impulsive conclusions I made immediately I got death. This consciousness is what I think Prof. Oladosu, the Chief the news about the death of Prof. Abayomi was that death was just Imam of Unilorin, in his remarks at the Fidau Prayers of the late Prof. indiscriminate. My spontaneous thinking was that 'Why should it Abayomi, referred to as the precursors of death. For the old people, take away a gentle and modest person like Prof. Abayomi'. However, growing grey hairs, involuntary bending of backbones, joint pains as well as squinting are all ominous and reality of the imminence of my impetuous thinking was corrected by Prof. Abdulsalam, Deputy death to the old people. Young people who are not yet fulfilled refuse Imam of Unilorin, in his striking sermon at the Fidau Prayer to observe and accept these realities because they fear death. But the real question is that: do we need to fear death organized by the Muslim Community for the late Professor. He because we are yet to fulfill worldly aspirations? Professor asserted that all souls, irrespective of their worldly status or spiritual Abdulsalam again provided an indirect answer to this question, and ranking, will taste death because all of us begin from non-existence the answer fitted into my prolonged meditations about death. The and we will all go back to non-existence. This remark, I think, essence of our lives is not really about worldly aspirations, and must, corresponds with Guthrie's philosophical contention that “Things therefore, not be built solely around it. Our ultimate goal is to strive in the cause of God and to doing good deeds. The larger and real value perish into those things out of which they have their being, as is due . . that gives life its meaning is serving God and doing good to people. ." If we see death as a migration of the soul into another world, then If this is the case, it is still surprising that many of us fear there is nothing to fear about death because no evil can await a good and just person. This is in line with Socrates' philosophy about death. death to the extent that we don't even want to talk about it. But if Prof. When he was condemned to death, he welcomed death without fear Abdulsalam's assertion, derived from Islamic Philosophy with an because, according to him, his mind had been made ready and undertone of Sufi's acknowledgement, and Guthrie's Western purified. To further clean his way to a better life hereafter, he Philosophical orientation, sink well with every one of us, we will requested his friend, Crito, to pay the debt of a cock he owed Asclepius, reminding me of the ultimate cleansing Prof. Oladosu have no cause to fear death. So, the fear of death can, therefore, be made at the interment of the late Abayomi through a repeated shout reduced by the acknowledgment of our eventual nonexistence and that anybody that the deceased owed or indebted to should see his family. the acceptance of death's inevitability. The challenge for us is to live our life in such a way that we But why do we even fear death anyway? This is one of the questions that I persistently reflected on when I heard about the death are prepared for death when it comes. From all indications, late Prof. of Prof. Abayomi. It is a question that has preoccupied the minds of Abayomi prepared for his death. He was an epitome of good life. He many philosophers. We all fear death, according to some Western served his God as little as he could; he was kind, gentle, modest and, philosophers, because we see death as a misfortune. Dying is the loss overall, very tolerant. Whatever might be our interpretation of his of a thing's life—the loss of its capacity to perpetuate itself using vital tolerance, he was vindicated at death that God loves him. He died processes. So, when a man dies, he loses the capacity and hopes of after being thoroughly purified with his pilgrimage to Mecca. So, perpetuating himself except through his soul – particularly if we Professor Abayomi's death is not a misfortune. For all of us still alive, we should always recognize our believe that man is an animal, person and mind altogether. Death thwarts what a philosopher- Bernard Williams- called categorical human temporality and finitude, as Professor Abdulsalam reiterated desires that give meaning to our lives. Death stops a continued life at the Fidau Prayer. Ignoring death leaves us with a false sense of that can only make good things accessible to us. Categorical desires life's permanence and this, perhaps, encourages us to lose ourselves are essential to human identities. Through categorical desires, we are in the vanities and trivialities of this life. “What we have done for attached to projects that are definitive of the self; and when we are ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the faced with their destruction, we would feel our lives are meaningless. world remains, and is immortal”. This is why we don't want to die, and why we see death as an evil and UNILORIN PRESS To download a copy of UNILORIN BULLETIN weekly, visit: www.unilorin.edu.ng.
