Unilorin won't compromise its 'better-by-far' status – Ambali By Fatima Abubakre he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that the institution would not be involved in any move that is capable of threatening the existing peace on the campus or undermining the University's better-by-far status. Prof. Ambali stated this last Wednesday (April 20, 2016) at a press briefing following the unsuccessful attempt by some people to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere on the University campus through the installation of a factional executive council for the local branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The Vice-Chancellor, who maintained that the management would not succumb to any approach that could truncate the University's 16 years of uninterrupted academic stability, stressed that “it is on record that the only University in Nigeria that has enjoyed a stable academic calendar is University of Ilorin and we will not allow anything to threaten that stability.” (Contd. on page 3)

'Plot to install factional ASUU exco has failed' By Fatimah Abubakre

T

he Chairman of the University of Ilorin Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Usman Adebimpe Raheem, has said that the plot by a group of people to install a factional executive council for the Union last Wednesday (April 20, 2016) has failed woefully. Speaking with newsmen at the Union secretariat after the abortive plot, Dr Raheem said that the plotters were not members of the University of Ilorin academic community, “but people from other campuses around the South-west, who wanted to impose on us, in a commando style, an executive of an 11-man congress, over and above the congregation of 1,538 lecturers of this University.” (Contd. on page 4)

‘We will resist any threat to our stability’ Prof. Ambali said, “I know that an election took place about two months ago by the local Unilorin ASUU; so this one now coming is strange and I'm awaiting the official information from those that are involved. I have been saying it is a union matter. I am the chief executive of the University, and all staff are my responsibility either academic, or non-academic. Everybody is welcomed on board to participate in what is going on either as an individual or as friends who have the same philosophy with the management in order to take the University of Ilorin to higher level.” The Vice-Chancellor, who stated that his doors were always open for dialogue and mediation, recalled that some national leaders of ASUU came to the University about one and half years ago. Prof. Ambali said, “They came in and I gave them audience, where they tabled their proposition in their effort to integrate the Unilorin ASUU and I gave them all the necessary attention and assistance. I told them in good faith that if you want to integrate Unilorin ASUU, I will advise you to meet all the stakeholders in ASUU and we gave them a good platform to do that and I think, unfortunately, they didn't come up with a decision that people deemed fair. It was not very fair because we all know in a democracy that the minority will have their say but the majority will have their way. They came up with conditions that were not all encompassing; there were two groups, there is one that is made up of 11 people and then you have the majority on the other hand. Where you want to integrate, everybody should be made to feel that their position is well articulated, but, unfortunately, where you intend to support minority over majority, then there are bound to be concerns and that is how that effort ended.” T h e Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r , however, stressed that “the door is still open up till now and once we come up with a very sound mind and not wanting to overrule the majority,

and let sanity prevail, let commonsense be maintained and then as long as the 16 years of peace on campus is not threatened, then we are ready to help all of us be on the same page. But this is an academic environment, it is very hard for all of us to be on the same page, but we can try and bring them closer. So, diverse views are always welcomed as expected on campus, because of the various schools of thought that exist here but that shouldn't threaten the peace that we have enjoyed over the last few years.” Prof. Ambali said, “If you look at the profile of all those that came here, they are people that have problems on their various campuses and they want to now bring their problem to the University of Ilorin that has enjoyed peace over the last 16 years. It is on record, and everywhere we go, as a team of Vice-Chancellors from all universities, we have met quite a number of 'Who is Who' in Nigeria and they have all advised them to please borrow a leaf from Unilorin for the sake of our children because what is happening in other universities is unwelcome, unacademic. That they should look at what Ilorin is doing and replicate it on their various campuses. That is a challenge to most of them and that is another challenge even to the umbrella organisation. “As I said, I am not a unionist, I am just the leader of Unilorin team trying to create a conducive atmosphere for academic exercise, none of them can come and beat their chests that they have had stable academic calendar on their campuses, I know all the universities, I know all the Vice-Chancellors, we meet, we compare notes, even Professors in some of those universities do send their children to the University of Ilorin, begging us to give them admission. So, I want a clear and honest statement; that is where we can talk and be on the same page.” T h e U n i l o r i n Vi c e Chancellor, who stated that the relationship between the union on campus and the management has

remained cordial, said when he assumed office, he had pledged to leave the institution better than he met it. He pointed out that there have been tremendous developments in the areas of infrastructure, staff training and development, introduction of new programmes and Faculties for the overall benefit of the system. While noting that Unilorin has been the most subscribed University in the last three years, Prof. Ambali further disclosed that the University has put in place an enabling environment to support investment. He disclosed that the University was about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with an American-Canadian firm on solar power generation that would not only be useful to the University but also to the country as a whole. He said, “Doing things the way it used to be done 20 years back is like turning the hand of the clock backward and Nigeria has had enough of that kind of approach. If we have to compare ourselves with the first world, if we have to be among the top universities in the world, we don't engage ourselves in all this kind of derailing approaches.” “I have been told several times that we here at the University of Ilorin are the people saving the face of education in Nigeria, we are the people rescuing and improving the image of education in Nigeria, if anybody wants to challenge that and abort that effort then that person is left with his conscience.” “Anything that will make life meaningful, consistent, comfortable for academic pursuit of students and research pursuit of our staff, I'm all for it irrespective of who is bringing it. But if we have to be thinking of the way we use to do things 20 years ago, we are not going to get to anywhere and education in this country will be threatened further… So let's refocus our attention. Don't let us take the institution to 20 years back because we have come so far and that is why we are better by far”, the ViceChancellor advised.

‘We are not against reintegration, but...’ (Contd. from front page) According to him, “Those people that came here are not my colleagues. They are people from outside of this University parading themselves as representatives of the national executive council of ASUU”. The ASUU Chairman confirmed that indeed there were talks between the national leadership of the body and the local branch which started during the tenure of his immediate predecessor in office, Prof. Abdulrasheed Adeoye, on modalities for reintegrating the University of Ilorin into the national ASUU. He said, “We made them realise that we are not averse to joining the national but that we need to approach issues systematically. If you recall, the University of Ilorin, following the 2001 crisis, had been suspended by

the national ASUU and has been sanctioned for 15 years. Very prominent members of ASUU of this University have been expelled by the national ASUU. And there are seven court cases that has emanated from this crisis. We were of the opinion that to be able to discuss with clear mind with each other, these court cases have to be withdrawn; we have two, they have five. We were ready to withdraw our own, let them cause their own to be withdrawn. They should lift the sanction; they should lift the expulsion on our elders because there are very little discussions that will take place without the involvement of those critical elders in this University. But the last meeting we had with the zonal coordinator, he promised he was going to take the discussions and the conditions we have given to the national and we are expecting the outcome of that and the next thing we heard was that election was going to

hold at the University of Ilorin on the 20th of April. “To us, it sounded strange because ASUU is an organisation of intellectuals. There is no other o rg a n i s a t i o n , w i t h o u t b e i n g immodest, that can parade the quality and the quantity of intellectuals ASUU parades. We don't expect that they should be found wanting thinking that in a University that has been on suspension for 15 years, election should be the first thing. In a University that has endured sanction for 15 years, election should not be the first thing. In any case, it is not strange to us because it is the usual commando approach that they are known for. They have done this in 2001, it failed, they have done it some other time, it failed and there are good indications that this latest one is going to fail”, Dr. Raheem maintained.

‘Ambali, a golden fish with impeccable records’ (Contd. from front page ) Presenting the awards to Prof. Ambali in his office last Wednesday (April 20, 2016), the Country Representative of CYC, Ambassador Bakare Luqman, explained that the organisation pays keen attention to public office holders who have made the society better through their various endeavours. Ambassador Luqman said, “Through the years, the organisation has been observing the way public office holders have been discharging their duties in the bid to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of their respective communities so that they could be identified, recognised and encouraged to do more”. The CYC Country Representative described Prof. Ambali as “a golden fish with impeccable records, visionary leadership and a lover of the African youth”. He said, “The award recipient has won the heart of the African youths by his conduct and credentials

4

as a distinguished leader, dogged administrator, bastion of hope and a statesman per excellence”. Ambassador Luqman disclosed that the award to Prof. Ambali was unanimously agreed upon at the organisation's national executive council meeting held at the University of Ghana, Legon. In his response, Prof. Ambali expressed his appreciation to the organisation, noting that their effort is highly commendable. The Vice-Chancellor said, “I thank you for nominating me. I thank the University for the opportunity to serve. I thank the staff for their dedication that has made these awards possible and for keeping the consistent academic calendar”. Prof. Ambali also thanked the students of the University of Ilorin for imbibing the training they are receiving in the University and for being law-abiding, adding that academic excellence, character moulding, and clear vision are the traits of the students.

The Vice-Chancellor then commended the efforts of the CYC members who have travelled from different parts of the world to present the award to him. Members of the CYC team that came to present the award included Ibiwoye Olawale, Yusuf Gbemisola, Jerome John, Ahmed Coulibaly and Helen Avideme. The Vice-Chancellor was joined at the award presentation ceremony by the Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adedayo Abdulkareem; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel O l a t u n j i ; t h e R e g i s t r a r, M r. Science students shine at Unilorin maiden Quranic contest By Mustafa Abubakar our Science students of the University of Ilorin were among those who performed brilliantly at the maiden Quran Recitation Competition organised by the University of Ilorin Muslim Community penultimate weekend (April 16 and 18, 2016). The event took place at the main Auditorium of the University of Ilorin with 64 participants comprising 44 males and 20 females. Announcing the result on behalf of the judges, a member of the Planning Committee, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, stated that Rahmatallah A b d u l Wa h a b E l e s i n o f t h e Department of Medicine , Isiaq Idris of the Department of Religions and Sodiq Abdulfatah Olabanji of the Department of Chemistry emerged as the overall winners in the First, Second and Third categories respectively. Also, Hajarah Imam Fulani of the Department of Islamic Studies, Abolarin Salim of the Department of Computer Science and

F

AbdurRahman Abdulrazzaq Akano of the Department of Plant Biology emerged the second overall winners in the First, Second and Third categories respectively. Marufah Odetundun of the Department of Medicine, Ridwanullah Adewumi Bamgbade of the Department of Geography, and Abdulhameed Ahmad Al-Katibi of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine also proved their Quranic recitation prowess by emerging as the third overall winners in the First, Second and Third categories respectively. In his lecture, entitled “The Position of and Opposition to AlQur'an: Implications for Muslim Children Education”, the Guest Speaker, Dr. Hamzat I. Abdulraheem of the Department of Languages and Literary Studies, Kwara State University, Malete, said that the importance of Quran recitation cannot be over-emphasized especially considering the level of distortion made on it by certain classes as well as its implication on

the children. Dr. Abdulraheem said, “Since the advent of Islam there have been a lot of plots against the Qur'an. This is an attempt by individuals to compose words like Qur'an as was the Musalimat al-Kaddahb who claimed to be Prophet of God and that he was even receiving revelations like Qur'an from God”. He added that “similar plots continue till today and some websites have even been developed to imitate the Qur'an which may be confusing to those who are not very familiar with Qur'an especially those who cannot grasp its meaning.” Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the occasion and the Dean, Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Prof. B. L. Yusuf, said that the importance of excelling in the recitation of the Holy Quran also include its understanding, reflecting on it and applying it in all human endeavours.

UITH Chapel of Christ marks 5th anniversary By Tajudeen Babamale

T

he Chapel of Christ the Healer (CCTH) of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has marked its th 5 anniversary and dedication of the Chapel. The celebration, which took place penultimate Saturday (April 16, 2016) at the Church premises, attracted a large turnout of believers from home and abroad. Speaking with the Unilorin Bulletin shortly after the service, the Chaplain of the Church, Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu, described the occasion as a very memorable one to the members of the University community. He said as a Christian community they were grateful that they have been able to bring the

church to a level where they could dedicate it and the location to God. Prof. Mokuolu also explained that the Chapel is expected to help the students and workers to imbibe the excellence of Christ in their study and work output. He said, “We want it to be a platform where we could minister to the needs of patients that are on admission and their relatives so that the fact that they are on admission should not preclude them from having a place to worship”. According to Prof. Mokuolu, the Chapel would be used “to advance the overall wellbeing of the hospital in the real sense of us being light and salt within any community where we find ourselves”.

Earlier in his message, entitled, “You are the Temple of God”, the Guest Minister and General Overseer of World Evangelical Bible International Church, Prophet Samsom Ayorinde, urged Christians to trust and believe in God. The Priest, who commended the idea of the venue of the church prayed for the continued progress of UITH, the staff and students of the University of Ilorin as well as the University management. On his part, the Chief Medical Director of UITH, Prof A.W.O. Olatinwo, congratulated the members of the University community especially the staff and students of the UITH on the achievement of the chapel.

& Avoid unnecessary use of antacids Be cautious of popping the heartburn pills indiscriminately. Calcium containing antacids cause constipation and magnesium containing ones cause diarrhoea. Antacids also interfere with absorption of certain drugs such as tetracycline. Use antacids only when necessary. Watch your lifestyle and food habits. Avoid eating spicy foods, a major cause for acid built up.

Seven success secrets

T

here is no controversy about the goal of every human endeavour, it is to attain success. Everyone wants to be successful in school, in business, in politics, and ultimately in life. The overarching motivation behind our toils is to be successful. Everybody wants success in life; nobody wants failure. However, what constitutes success varies from one person to another. Ask an average Nigerian, to be successful is to make a good grade, get a good job, have a good spouse, live in a good apartment, own good cars – everything good. To many people, being successful is being famous, rich and powerful. It is the crave for success that leads some people into crime. It is the same misplaced zeal that make misguided students to engage in examination malpractice. It is normal for students, especially those of a better by far University like ours, to dream big and aim high. But it is important that they understand what success actually stands for in order not to derail. I just saw a clip on how the quest to be “successful” led some young Nigerians to an Asian country where they ended up in the hangman's noose. Bill Cosby was said to have remarked that he did not know the secret of success but the secret of failure was trying to please everybody. Yet, the secrets of success are not rocket science; they can be found in "success" itself, if you ask me. Therefore, we can say S.U.C.C.E.S.S. entails seven things or secrets, each represented by a letter. This process is known as acronymy in morphology. The first success secret is Sincerity of intention. You want to be rich – for what reason? Is it to help the needy, assist the poor, empower the people or to contribute to human development? Is it to oppress others, exert revenge and boast to the world you have “arrived”? Your actions are judged by your intention. To be successful, be sincere. Then comes the second letter, “U”, which represents Understanding the purpose of life. The purpose of life is to serve – God and humanity. This understanding would make one appreciate that success is service to others. Just as we have many students in school without knowing the purpose of their education, many people live today without understanding the purpose of life. This is unfortunate. The third letter represents Contentment. Without

contentment, one is prone to a life of worry, anxiety and sadness. The principle here is to put in one's best in every endeavour and be contended with one's portion. Not everyone will own a private jet, for example. As Rajinikanth once said, “Whether you have a Maruti or a BMW, the road remains the same. Whether you travel economy or business class, the destination doesn't change. Whether you have a Titan or a Rolex, the time is the same. Whether you have an Apple Samsung or a Lava, people who call you remain the same. There is nothing wrong dreaming a luxurious life. What needs to be taken care of is to not let the need become greed. This is because needs can always be met but greed can never be fulfilled.” The fourth letter stands for Consciousness of God. This consciousness manifests in character. It is character that clears the way for those that have it. It is character that makes one to pick the petal and drop the metal in every situation. Good character engenders consciousness of God; bad character entails closeness to the devil. Who are you closer to? The fifth letter is Excellence. You have to excel to succeed. A student who wants to succeed in life must begin by excelling in his studies. The same thing is applicable to an artisan. To succeed, he must be excellent in his craft such that people would seek him. Even if good grades do not automatically lead to success in life, they are closer to success than bad grades. Be the best in your class if you can. Besides, success is a function of Sacrifice. All successful people sacrifice something to be where they are. To be a successful student has a cost and that is to avoid distractions. To be a successful leader, every student is also a leader as everyone is a shepard, you will not be thinking about your long throat and your immediate family, you will be thinking about people. Lastly, as no success is achieved on a platter of gold, anyone who wants success must embrace Seriousness, which is the secret of the last letter. If you are not serious in anything you do, you will not succeed in it. That is why in all matters, seriousness is key. Whether in the micro world of the University or the macro world of the society, unlocking the secrets of success is our responsibility. When one works with the secrets, one's success is guaranteed. If the anticipated success does not come immediately, it is definitely deferred till the best time, which is God's time.
