NECO scores Unilorin high By Olusegun Mokuolu

T

he Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Abdulrasheed Garba, has said that the stable academic calendar maintained by the University of Ilorin has “placed the University on a pedestal that is higher than any other university in the country.” The NECO Registrar stated this last Wednesday (February 3, 2016) when he visited the ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), in his office along with some staff of the examination body. Speaking through the Kwara State Coordinator of the Council, Mr. Olapade Gbenga, the Registrar described the Vice-Chancellor as a great achiever and commended the University's management team for making the institution a centre of academic excellence. He noted that Prof. Ambali was among the three ViceChancellors that were honoured by the Federal Government during last year's National Honours Award

ceremony in Abuja. This, he attributed to the exemplary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, adding that the ranking of the University of Ilorin in recent times is a reflection of the leadership quality of Prof. Ambali. The NECO boss pleaded with the management of the University of Ilorin to consider the re-opening of the University's admission portal for a short period after its usual August 15 closure, to give NECO candidates some time to upload their results and stand a chance of gaining admission into the University. Prof. Garba, who presented a written request to this effect to the Vice-Chancellor, explained that NECO examination results are released in September because the NECO normally waits for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to first conduct its examinations. In his response, Prof. Ambali, who expressed happiness over the encomiums poured on him and the University by the NECO boss, said, “NECO, as an examination body, has

examined us and we are glad to have come out in flying colours”. The Vice-Chancellor then promised to look into the request of the Council for an extension of the portal closure deadline, pointing out, however, that for the University to maintain a stable academic calendar, it has to keep to its academic schedule. He disclosed that the University is expanding its programmes in order to be able to admit more students. Joining the Vice-Chancellor to receive the visitors were the D e p u t y Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. G. Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr. J. Omoniyi; the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho; and the Deputy Bursar, Mr. I. O. Ogunbiyi. Other NECO officials that accompanied the State Coordinator on the visit included Mr. Ajibola Bolade, Mrs. Bukola Alloh, Mr. Sheu Akorede, Mrs. A. Tunde-Kareem and Mrs. Alhasan O. Abosede.

The Youth Spring Publisher, who donated 500 copies of some past editions of the magazine to the University during the visit, said, “This is a University where students behave decently and are assured of graduating at the stated time. This University is good for the society and the country needs universities like this to educate the black race”. He added, “We are proud of the University. You are already on the global map”. Mr. Adebayo pointed out that the University has a good foundation,

adding that no one could afford not to be a friend of such University. The Youth Spring Publisher then commended Prof. Ambali, whom he described as a mentor of the youth. “You are a father to emulate”, he stated. In his response, the ViceChancellor appreciated the Publisher of the Youth Spring magazine for his donation and sweet words for the University, saying, “We have benefitted from people like you who observe us critically and offer us advice. Thank you for your observations, it will help us to do more”. Commending the contributions of the staff of the University to make the University what it is today, Prof. Ambali said, “I want to leave the University better than I met it. That is why we have invested heavily in infrastructural development, staff development and the raising of disciplined students”. Prof. Ambali told the

publisher that the University of Ilorin places high premium on moral and academic knowledge, saying that “the best we can give Nigeria is to train the youths to be good Nigerians”. He said, “We are the parents of the students and we take that responsibility seriously”, explaining that the University of Ilorin has been the most subscribed University in Nigeria in the last three years because of consistent academic calendar, good moral and academic training and serene environment. Unilorin researchers discover new diagnostic method for Hepatitis 'C' virus By Adeyinka Ademuyiwa

R

esearchers at the University of Ilorin have discovered a new diagnostic method of identifying Hepatitis “C” in human carriers long before they express the symptoms of the disease. Dr. Jide Agbede of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Ilorin, who leads a multi-disciplinary research team on the study, disclosed this in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin. According to Dr. Agbede, “Hepatitis “C” virus is a very deadly viral disease that has propensity to cause cancer of the liver as carriers advance in age”. He said that the infection is not easily diagnosed because not everyone with the virus expresses the symptoms. The symptoms are Gastro Intestinal Tract (GIT) infections and abdominal discomfort. The medical researcher explained that “it is when people need to donate blood for blood transfusion purposes and the donor's blood is screened that the virus is often discovered”, adding that “even

at that, only those who have passed the 'window period' are discovered”. He explained that the 'window period' is a time between when the virus gets into human body unnoticed and the time when existing diagnostic technology can fish it out”. He said, “Our research is to identify the core antigen, along with its antibodies. An antigen is any substance like chemicals, bacteria, viruses, pollen or even bacterial toxins or tissue cells that causes the immune system to produce antibodies against it while antibodies, also called immunoglobulins, are large Yshaped proteins, which function to identify and help remove foreign antigens or targets such as viruses and bacteria. Every antibody recognises a specific foreign antigen. “So if a carrier of the Hepatitis “C” virus, for instance, donates his blood for blood transfusion, because existing diagnostic method does not capture infected people at the window period, the laboratory technologist

will transfuse the blood into the blood bank or to another person ultimately and he will be blameless”. “Our effort is to track the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) - a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes which is the carrier of genetic information-of the virus on the infected person. We also note the substance produced by the virus in the process of infection”, he said The virologist, who is working along with Prof Yisa M. Fakunle of the Department of Medicine and who until recently the D e p u t y Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Management Services), Dr. F. Oladiji of the Department of Heamatology and Mr. O.O. Adeyemi of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, further explained that the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, is collaborating with the team on this study and that Mr. Adeyemi is currently at Leeds working on some aspects of the research.

T

he Director, School of Preliminary Studies, University of Ilorin, Prof. M. M. Prof. Akanbi, who made the call penultimate Sunday (January 30, 2016), while unveiling his charity initiative, tagged “MMGIVIT”, in Ilorin, said that the project is meant to redistribute wealth for the upliftment of the poor. The Professor of Business Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, said that MMGIVIT (Muhammad Mustapha Give It out charitable initiative) will be providing essential needs to the less privileged at give-away prices

annually. The don, who was also a former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University, said, “The initiative was an attempt to give back to the society by ensuring comfort to the less privileged. It is a nongovernmental, non-political, nonfaith based and non-tribal inclination aimed at redistributing wealth for the upliftment of the less privileged. So let all well-meaning Nigerians join hands with us to complement the efforts of other Non-Governmental Organisations in assisting less privileged in the society.” Explaining how the giveaway items were sourced, Prof. Akanbi said, “We set out to collect durable, quality items in good condition that are no longer desirable or relevant to the owners so that they

can be redistributed.” He added that the total amount collected from the sales would be used to fund the logistics of the scheme and the balance used to support good causes like off-setting school or medical bills of other less privileged in the society. Babalola urges synergy between academia, industry By Fatima Abubakre

T

he Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Ayo Babalola, has stressed the need to evolve a synergy between the academia and industry as a way of boosting the nation's economy. Dr. Babalola made the s u g g e s t i o n l a s t We d n e s d a y (February 3, 2016) while speaking at the maiden edition of the Industrial Talk organised by the Faculty. The Industrial Talk, which was well attended by students and staff of the Faculty, drew resource persons from the industry in the fields of Architecture, Estate Survey as well as Town Planning. Dr. Babalola explained that the idea of the seminar was occasioned by the close relationship between the academia and the industry, pointing out that some scientists have become entrepreneurs while scientists who had earlier criticised such activities had become advocates of industry/academic intersection, as they find it fruitful for both science and business. The Dean pointed out that academia-industry partnerships are expected to become common

because both universities and industries are experiencing financial pressures due to the economic downturn and the sharp drop in oil prices. Resource persons at the Industrial Talk were Arch. Adeola Sunday Odetoye, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Kwara State Branch and Esv. Afolayan Abel Omoniyi, who is the Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Kwara State Branch. In his presentation, Architect Odetoye explained that the building industry is one which enhances entrepreneurship abilities because of its collaborative nature, maintaining that gone were the days when an architect was waiting for a white collar job. Arch. Odetoye, who pointed out that traditional architecture exists all over the world, frowned at the idea of bringing in foreign materials, expatriates and consultants from outside the country, a situation, which he said, had made housing delivery cumbersome.

The NIA Chairman said, “When we hear people say Rome was not built in a day, the fact is that that statement means Rome is already built, so when will the Nigeria nation of our aspiration, of our dream, be built?” On his part, Esv. Omoniyi commended the organisers of the Industrial Talk, describing it as “a timely event that would enable the students gain relevant knowledge about the industry and boost entrepreneurship”. Other bodies represented at the event were the Nigerian Institute of Survey (NIS) and the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners. In attendance at the Industrial Talk seminar were the Ag. Heads of the Departments of Architecture, Estate Management and Valuation, Urban and Regional Planning, Survey and GeoInformatics, and Quantity Surveying, Arch. A. Suleiman; Mr. N.A. Bello; Mr. Jimoh Musa Yusuf; Surv. Abdulyekeen Ola; and Mrs. Taibat Ranti Adebiyi, respectively as well as staff and students of the Faculty.

Two boys were arguing when the teacher entered the room. The teacher says, “Why are you arguing?” One boy answers, “We found a ten dollar bill and decided to give it to whoever tells the biggest lie.” "You should be ashamed of yourselves," said the teacher, "When I was your age I didn't even know what a lie was." The boys gave the ten dollars to the teacher.

The royal, gubernatorial endorsements

F

or the University of Ilorin, Friday, January 22, 2016 was a day of double fortunes, a day of a resounding royal endorsement and an unmistakable gubernatorial backing. On that day, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola hosted the management team of the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), at the Enuwa Palace, Ile-Ife and Bola Ige House seat of the state government, Osogbo, respectively. And the duo delivered a reassuring verdict of pass mark that confirmed the university's pre-eminent position among the country's tertiary education institutions It was “love-at-first-sight”, as these two prominent citizens literally fell in love spontaneously with the august visitors in January! While the royal father praised the existing love and harmony among the University staff, which he identified as the reason behind its consistent progress, the governor lauded the University management for developing “a seamless strategy for a stable academic calendar” in the institution. The two-city tour was in continuation of the University's advocacy engagement with the Town and, in this extant case, the Crown. As explained by the ViceChancellor, the visit was a way of reaching out to the friends of the University with a view to identifying how they could be of assistance in tackling some of the challenges confronting it, especially in the area of students' accommodation. It is no longer news that of the over 35,000 students of the University, barely 10 per cent could be accommodated on campus, a situation that might not augur too well for the ideal society of well-groomed, optimally disciplined and well-behaved young men and women the management is trying to build. On this score, the two visits were handsomely rewarding. The Ooni, whose palace was the first port of call, promised to support the University of Ilorin in the area of the provision of more hostel accommodation for the students. Expressing his “deep concern” about the challenge, Oba Ogunwusi disclosed that he was already “in discussion on the accommodation problem” and promised to work with the University management on the matter. And in an apparent demonstration of his commitment to his promise, the royal father promptly handed over one his foreign friends, Mr. Laresh, who was incidentally in the palace during the visit, to the ViceChancellor, with a mandate to take up the matter from that point. Mr. Laresh, an Indian national, is the Managing

Director of Emel Construction Company, a leading supplier of building materials in Nigeria. One thing led to the other and the industrialist enthusiastically took up the challenge and, as if to prove his readiness to carry out the royal mandate, pledged, on his own account, to donate some solar lanterns to the University. This pledge, one must note, was redeemed exactly 15 days later, last Friday (February 5, 2016), when the solar lanterns were handed over to the Vice-Chancellor in his office by Mr. Roy Chatterjee, on behalf of Mr. Laresh. But if the visit to the Enuwa Palace was an instant success, the one to the Osogbo seat of the government was even more so, as Governor Aregbesola also pledged “a very cordial relationship with the University of Ilorin”. The governor, who said he was “enthused by the University's leap in the area of ICT development”, commended the commitment of the institution “to modernisation and knowledge tradition” with the distribution of i-Pad tablets to all its students. Ogbeni Aregbesola also described the University of Ilorin as “the only public university in Nigeria that has escaped the customary breaks in academic calendar”, noting that “when a student enters the school, the fear of not completing his/her education on time is totally eliminated”. The governor pointed out that “this is Unilorin's most important contribution to sustaining a credible academic environment in the country”, saying, “We commend those who have developed this seamless strategy and we also commend those of you who are sustaining it”. …and a presidential Unilorite With its status as the most subscribed tertiary institution in Nigeria, the University of Ilorin has become such an attractive bride that even some world leaders are beginning to show interests in becoming honorary “Unilorites”. This emerging trend came to the open recently during Prof. Ambali's thank-you visit to the Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. While welcoming the Vice-Chancellor's team to his residence in Accra, a visibly elated President Mahama said, “Since my last visit to Nigeria last October, I have taken time to constantly monitor the progress of the University of Ilorin. The University stands out as a very distinguished centre of learning. And I have been following developments at the school on its website as I have become a honorary member of the institution”. Wow! What else can one say?
