Unilorin holds Research Fair Prof. Ambali, who was represented by the Deputy ViceChancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof Gabriel A. Olatunji, said, “Universities all over the world cannot solely fund researches. In developing economy, like Nigeria, it is clear that government alone cannot fund researches. We have been to many parts of the world, America, Europe, Asia etc, and we observed what goes on there. At Unilorin, we are not joking with research. We strive to be the best”. He commended the Director of the Laboratory to Product Centre (LABTOP) of this University, Prof Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, “for his personal interest in the exhibition”, adding that “I have no doubt in my mind that he will lead us to the Promised Land”. T h e Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r ' s representative, however, expressed worries about few Faculties and Departments that did not showcase anything, saying that attitudes like this call for concern. While commending the Panel of Judges for a job well done, Prof. Olatunji said, “It is not easy to be a judge”. He, however, promised that “nothing exhibited will be dumped”, saying that the University will establish a research museum to keep them. Prof. Olatunji also commended the immediate past Director of the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), Prof (Mrs.) Adenike T. Oladiji, who, he said, “has done excellently well”, adding, “We would have loved her to continue but the law on tenure will not allow us”. Earlier in his remarks, the Director of the Laboratory to Product Centre (LABTOP), organisers of the E x h i b i t i o n F a i r, P r o f . S . A Abdulkareem, said it was a rewarding experience going round Faculties to screen their works before the exhibition. Prof. Abdulkareem said, “I

want to appreciate our Deans, Research Managers and Investigators who put up several innovative designs and reports that we witnessed since the beginning of this week. I congratulate those researchers whose exhibits made the final cut for today's fair while urging others to know that this is just the beginning”. While welcoming the researchers to the Fair, which was aimed at bringing into reality one of the objectives of establishing the Laboratory to Product Centre (LABTOP), the Professor of Chemical Engineering, who is also the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hilkmah University, Ilorin, reminded the researchers that it is their responsibility to go beyond presenting academic papers for promotion or even developing prototypes for exhibitions like this. “The University expects each researcher to patent his findings even if it is not physical product. Ideas and new research methodologies are vital and interesting to the development of the University and the nation”, Prof. Abdulkareem stated. The Director further counselled the researchers, “Note also that you can patent intangible products. Ideas can be patented and you can get royalty on them. We just need to be sure that our finding is new, novel, useful and more beneficial to humanity than the existing one. So, please visit the Legal Unit with your work to commence the patenting process and follow-up. You will get a unique number for each work you submit and if relevant authorities are satisfied with your work, you will be issued a patent which is for a lifetime. “Let me add here, ladies and gentlemen, that though as the researcher, you will be recognised as the inventor. However, you may need to share the royalty with the rest of your research group, your Department, Faculty and this

University. Filing of your work for patenting is free. The University will pay for you so you have nothing to lose by embracing the patenting culture”. Finally, I appreciate the University Administration for its continuous support. We could not have done much without their guide, encouragement and support”. Presenting her panel report, Prof Oladiji, who headed the team, expressed happiness with the quantum of exhibits that were showcased at the Fair. She listed the criteria used to judge presentations to include: innovativeness, originality, newness and novelty; usefulness of findings to see if the presentations can be immediately purchased at the Fair; finishing, aesthetics, cost e ff e c t i v e n e s s , r e l i a b i l i t y o f ruggedness of the materials, etc. Prof. Oladiji explained that some exhibits do not fit these criteria because of the nature of the work. She pointed at presentations from Faculties of Arts, Law and Environmental Sciences, whose exhibits were mainly published books, to buttress her point. The Chief Judge then announced the three best presentations. These are, the Short Message Sim (SMS)-Controlled Electronic Bill Board by Dr. A.O. Otuoze and five others from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which came tops; OAA Temporal bone holder by Dr. H.K. Omokanye and three others from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, second place and Production of Leather Shoe from goat skin by Dr A.T. Yusuf, third place. The winners were given N75, 000, N50, 000 and N25,000, respectively. Prof. Oladiji disclosed that 70% of the exhibits scored above 60% marks and that 45 exhibits were assessed in all. She, however, urged those whose exhibits were not among the best not to lose hope.

Yusuf, new IOE Director, assumes duties By Fatima Abubakre

T

he new Director of the Institute of Education (IOE), University of Ilorin, Prof. Mudathir Olalere Yusuf, has formally assumed duties, taking over from Prof. A. Y. Abdulkareem, who was recently appointed Deputy ViceChancellor of the University. Speaking at a brief handover ceremony last Tuesday (March 1, 2016), the immediate past Director, Prof. Abdulkareem, congratulated Prof. Yusuf on his appointment, noting that since administration is a continuum, the new Director was inheriting something smooth. P r o f . Abdulkareem, who recalled the laudable efforts of his successor as a member of the Institute of Education Quality Assurance Committee, expressed the hope that he “would do far better than what is here today.” T h e D e p u t y Vi c e Chancellor-designate, who described staff members of the Institute as “men and women of probity”, who are committed to the work, thereafter presented his handover notes to the new Director. He noted that the hand-over notes “centre on the Institute's programme, the administrative processes and procedures in the Institute, staff personnel matters, students matters, physical facilities development and management, financial matters, publications, relationship between the Institute and other statutory bodies within the University and outside the University as well as the Director's office where you will be working directly”. Prof. Abdulkareem expressed appreciation to God that he was not being forced to leave the Institute. He commended the staff for their support and cooperation during his tenure. In his remarks, the new IOE D i r e c t o r, a c k n o w l e d g e d h i s

immediate predecessor's accomplishments, saying he was inspired to do more for the Institute following in the footsteps of Prof. Abdulkareem, whom he described as “a father and a man of vision”. According to Prof. Yusuf, “Prof. Abdulkareem is not a man of ambition; he is a man of vision”. He said, “When a man of vision is talking about the general good, a man of ambition is talking about me, myself, my wife, my children and my family. A man of vision, like him, also will not start to agonize over challenges; instead, he will organize to solve those challenges. Prof. Abdulkareem had the vision of moving the Institute to a higher level. A man of ambition is always transactional in leadership but a man of vision looks at it that there is always a blind-spot in the winning team; if you are not very careful that blind-spot becomes your albatross. A man of vision looks at it and says okay, yes we are good, we can be better; if we are better, we can be the best. A man of vision is always talking about legacies while a man of ambition is talking about privileges; so I am happy that I am following such a man.” The new IOE Director, who said he felt humbled by his appointment, also disclosed that Prof. Abdulkareem worked to bring about a new template for teaching practice, which was adopted by the Faculty of Education last year. He added that products of the Institute are as good as the regular students now, based on the efforts of his predecessor in monitoring lecturers and students in order to ensure quality control in terms of standards. Prof. Yusuf said, “The immediate past Director's idea of making everything digital for the Institute became the template adopted by the University Senate at its last sitting. There are things he has

done that the Faculty and the University are now benefitting. He could have been contented to say it is just Sandwich and the students are graduating, then fine, but a man of vision will go beyond that. So, I want to thank Allah on your behalf for the privilege that you have to serve and you entered through the door of honour and you exited through the door of honour and we pray that Insha Allah where you are going to serve now, you are going to excel also and God will continue to elevate you”. While calling for the cooperation of the IOE staff, the new Director enjoined them to key-in and do their part by clearing their own portion of the room and adopt the philosophy of: “if I don't do it, who will do it?”, pointing out that, if Nigerians adopted this attitude, the nation will be better for it. Prof. Yusuf said, “The Institute is like a system that is composed of components or subsystems. The Director is just one of the elements within the Institute; you are as important as the Director. Nobody is inferior, nobody is superior but somebody must lead. And like my attitude, I will not lead like a duck that will push its children in the front, I will be like the hen who will be in front and ask the others to follow. I push myself to work, so please when I also want to push you, please pull along with me.” The Secretary of the Institute, Mrs. B. A. Sa'adu, in her remarks, thanked all present at the event, enjoining them to extend same support and cooperation to the new Director. Prior to his appointment as Director, IOE, Prof. Yusuf, had served as Sub-Dean, Faculty of Education; Director, Centre for Open and Distance Learning and Head of the Department of Educational Technology, University of Ilorin.

The with the communicator

Dr.L.A.Azeez

Rumour bomb

S

ome two or three weeks ago, the rumour mill was full of malicious and obnoxious disinformation about the University of Ilorin and its management. As a faithful member of the University community, I was perturbed by the abhorrence of the various disinformations, which the Vice Chancellor, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, had debunked and described unequivocally as “malicious, misleading and unfounded”. As a communicator, too, who has an iota of understanding of how rumours work, I was enthused to do a thick and deep discourse analysis of the corpus of disinformation about our University. Ultimately, I cannot but conclude that the Vice-Chancellor was spot on with his succinct description of the disinformation as a narrative of malice. Indeed, rumour is nothing but a claim whose truthfulness is in doubt, or whose veracity is not quickly or ever confirmed, and which often has no clear source, even if its ideological or partisan origins and malicious intents are clear. Rumour, therefore, is a kind of persuasive message involving a proposition that lacks 'secure standards of evidence'. Rumors are stories that are steeped into speculation. No wonder the Vice-Chancellor had described the rumours peddling around about our University as “unfounded”. Interestingly, my analysis of the rumours about Unilorin depicted them as wedge-driving instruments intended to undermine the loyalty of the University staff as well as the relations of the University with its main publics and stakeholders. And this is my greatest concern. The question that I have been asking myself is that: why is that, in our society, we are more predisposed to spreading negative rumours than disseminating positive rumours? One major answer that has been persistently racking my brains is that we tend to distort facts as a result of certain subconscious and malicious motivations. This, in my view, is the reason some communicator scholars consider rumour as one of the potent rhetorical strategies of propaganda. So, the narrative of disinformation our University and its management have suffered recently is a rumour bomb, which is, more or less, a smear campaign that is coordinated to attack our personality as a an entity as well as our image. It was deployed for specific deleterious effect to discredit us and tarnish our image. But this is not uncommon for the individuals or corporate entities that are successful. Rumour bomb is a manifestation of what Town and Gown synthesized from the philosophical truism or premonition of the Publisher of the Newswatch as the burden of success. According to the Publisher, the mischief makers whose stock-in-trade is often to plot the downfall of highfliers and successful individuals are predisposed to discredit and smear the personality of the individuals or focal human entities that are trailing the blaze and doing things

rightly. Unilorin is on the top. Its management team is exceptional. No wonder, the University and its management team are the topic and target of rumour bomb. Since the rumours about Unilorin were strategically weaved and strewed by the mischief makers to, interalia, undermine the loyalty of the University staff, it is necessary that we fortify ourselves against any form of manipulation that could make us accomplices of malice and mischief against ourselves. Rumour spreads fast and wide with the word of mouth, and as it is diffused by people, it gets more and more distorted. In other words, as a result of subconscious motivation, people transmit rumours with a great deal of distortions that present information about what it is assumed ought to be rather than what it is actually the reality. To this end, all religions clearly enjoin us to shun any form of rumour mongering. Although rumour is an inevitable form of informal communication in corporate organizations, I think that it should not be tolerated at the University of Ilorin, which, in my own evaluation, is an open system. We should not give the mischief makers the chance to rubbish our glory and achievements. Bernard had explained the function and danger of rumours in a strategic communication context by noting that rumours, like explosives, can be deadly for those in its direct path, and can instill ridicule and fear. It is desirable that we are by no means the mongers of the rumours that are directly meant to destroy our leaders or that are indirectly meant to destroy the glory of our University. Kudos to Adeoye Undoubtedly, the outgone Chairman of ASUU, Unilorin Chapter, Rasheed Adeoye, has really defined what Constructive Unionism means. He has, indeed, established the standard for Reasonable Unionism. In spite of the hazardous trying times he endured as the Chairman of ASUU, Unilorin Chapter, which he himself had described as “loathsome and awesome”, he recorded great and indelible achievements – surprisingly without any bloodletting and disruption of the system. The achievements are legion and amazing in their quality and quantity. In no particular order, I should mention the ones that are extremely remarkable to me. Annual promotion of qualified members into professorial cadre, 2014 appointment into the professorial cadre and the special respite for a few committed individuals that deserved it, donation of 1% of November of academic staff salary to the IDPs, ASUU Shopping Mall, Purchase of Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus for Union activities, ASUU Hostels and host of others that space cannot permit me to list here. One will wonder how he was able to achieve this much in the environment of disunity, or within what he described as the “prevailing situation of dual antagonism”.
