VC commends alumni's interest in Unilorin's progress By Ishaq Babatunde

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has commended the alumni of the institution for embarking on series of activities and projects that have direct positive impacts on the progress and development of their alma mater. Prof Ambali gave the commendation last Friday (December 4, 2015) when members of the Executive Committee of the Lagos Branch of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association visited him in his office. Members of the Association were in the University for a lecture on "Life after graduation", which they organised for the students. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, particularly underscored the frantic efforts of the institution's alumni, which, he said, have really assisted the University in all ramifications. Prof. Ambali said that the lecture was very apt and timely, pointing out that such a lecture could not have come at a better time than now when university graduates

in the country could not boast of securing jobs after graduation. The Vice-Chancellor, who described the lecture as worthwhile, also called on other chapters of the Alumni Association of the University to take a cue from the Lagos Chapter so as to unanimously add more value to their alma mater. He commended all alumni for their sacrifice and commitment towards giving the institution that produced them the best it deserves. Earlier in his address, the Managing Director of Towncriers Ltd, Ikeja, Lagos, Mr. Kayode Olagesin, who was the Guest Lecturer, expressed satisfaction with the physical development that has taken place on the University campus. Olagesin, who is also an alumnus of the University, admitted that a lot of transformation had taken place on campus between the time he graduated from the University in 1988 and now. He ascribed the academic integrity of the University of Ilorin to the leadership style of the men at the helm.

VC commends Kwara Governor’s good leadership style (Contd. from front page) The Commissioner noted that the University of Ilorin is known for excellence and attributed its resounding success over the years to the leadership quality of both past and present administrations of the institution. Alhaji Ajeigbe explained that the rationale behind his visit to the University was to familiarise himself with the institution's radio station, the Unilorin 89.3 FM. Ambali backs govt's efforts on HIV/AIDS eradication By Mustafa Abubakar

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that the efforts of the Federal Government towards the eradication of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country would yield positive results. Prof. Ambali stated this last Tuesday (December 1, 2015) during the World AIDS Day programme organised by the Nigerian Association of Microbiology Students (NAMS), University of Ilorin Chapter. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented on the occasion by the former Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, said that the government's efforts at increasing public awareness of the disease will assist in keeping the infection rate down. Urging the government not to relent in its efforts towards the eradication of HIV virus, Prof. Adeleke said, “What we are organising today is a way of supporting the government's efforts in the eradication of HIV/AIDS in the country. This awareness is about the negative effect of the virus to every home in the society.” He disclosed that as human beings our health is paramount and we should do everything to sustain it, adding that what we can do for those that are having the virus is to assist, support and not stigmatise them. The Vice-Chancellor's representative said, “For those yet to contact the disease, we need to sustain our health. We have to be careful. We cannot say we want to protect someone's health and endanger our own life. This is one of the dangerous diseases that could damage your health. So, do everything possible to protect your health. Know who you interact with and how, especially members of the opposite sex because you may not be able to retrieve your health if you allow yourself to be infected”. Speaking at the event, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Dr. Joseph Fayeye, urged

4

those not infected with the virus to avoid unprotected sex, receive regular check-ups and relate well with those who have contacted the virus, to assure them that having the virus does not mean certificate of death. Dr. Fayeye, who said that the disease does not have respect for anybody, also urged victims to come forward and not be stigmatised. The don said, “For us to be safe means that we must be faithful with our partners. Abstinence is the key word here. We need to be careful. Let us spread the message and advise people to do regular check-ups. It is like a storm and we need to prepare for it. We must disabuse our minds from the belief that we cannot bring those who are infected closer. There is no way we can get to zero level of the virus if we keep those infected away from us”. Dr. Fayeye, however, said that for the country to get to zero level of the virus, the citizens must take time to check and know their status regularly, get involved in counselling and interact with those who are infected to let them know that they can live with it like any other human being. In his opening remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. A. Sani, represented by the Head of the Department of Optometry and Vision Science, Prof. M.O. Oriowo, urged the students to value their body and be very cautious and protective. Prof. Sani said that the essence of the World AIDS Day programme is to teach students to desist from stigmatising anyone with such case. In their separate remarks, the President and the General Secretary of NAMS, the organisers of the event, Agbefawo Ahmad and Adesibikan Ololade, respectively, said that the aim of the programme was to proffer solution to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among the youths.

How to curtail threat of Global Warming - Don By Ishaq Babatunde

T

he Federal Government has been advised to establish a National Space Weather Programme with the mission of advancing space weather services that would stem the tide of the threat of Global Warming and Climate Change and associated health challenges. Professor Lawrence Babatunde Kolawole of the Department of Physical Sciences, Redeemer's University, Ede, Osun state, gave the advice last Thursday (December 3, 2015) while delivering a lecture at the 6th National Conference of the International Union of Radio Science-Nigeria (URSI-NG) held at the University of Ilorin Main Auditorium. In his lecture, entitled "Space Weather, Communication Systems and National Security", Prof. Kolawole expressed hope that the agency, when established, would assist and support the country to prepare for the technological, economic, security, and health impacts that may arise from extreme space weather events. The don, who was represented on the occasion by Prof. Dare Ajewole, also encouraged Nigerian universities and research institutes to focus their researches on aspects of Space Weather with a view to providing important and timely data to advance and support operational space weather services. He called on URSI-NG to perform an assessment of current space weather observing systems in Nigeria with a view to evaluating their ability to meet the national demands for Space Weather studies. In the second lecture, Prof. I. O. Owolabi of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, who spoke on the topic "Radiofrequency Spectrum Management and Applications: The Nigerian Perspective", underscored the importance of the radiofrequency spectrum and its properties in diverse applications. For better service delivery in the Nigerian environment, Prof. Owolabi stressed the need to explore some areas like spectrum management; radio refractivity, ducting and transhorizon propagation; rainfall attenuation; digital mapping; cellular mobile radio propagation; and digital electronics and signal processing. Earlier, in his key note address, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umaru Danbatta, who was

represented on the occasion by Engr. Yusuf Asaju, acknowledged that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a major role in national security, especially in the area of surveillance against physical assault to national sovereignty and information security to prevent hacking into vital government data. According to him, communication and information has impacted on other sectors like education (e-learning), commerce (e-banking, online shopping), inventory management, health care (virtual 3D), as well as governance (electronic card reader as used in the 2015 general elections). Prof. Danbatta commended the management of the University of Ilorin for ensuring optimal use of the ICT equipment provided for it by the NCC over the years. In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), who spoke through the former Dean, Faculty of Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, said that the University of Ilorin is the foremost among Nigerian universities in the appreciation, acquisition, and utilisation of ICT. The Vice Chancellor said that the theme of the conference, "Space Weather, Communication Systems and National Security" was apt and timely at this time when the nation is faced with challenges bordering on national security. Earlier in his welcome address, the President of URSI-NG, Prof. Isaac Adimula, said that the conference was poised to provide answers to various challenges from space weather, over congestion of the available spectrum, jamming of radio signals and security of information transmitted on radio and therefore suggest novel ways of advancing the cause of Radio Science. Shortly before the commencement of the Conference, the representatives of the NCC ViceChairman, in company of the leadership of URSI-NG visited the Vice-Chancellor in his office. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, who received the visitors on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, commended the leadership of NCC for considering the University of Ilorin in its ICT intervention. He pledged that the institution would make judicious use of the ICT items provided so as justify the purpose for which they were given.

We will sustain Unilorin’s better by far status — DVC Prof. Olatunji disclosed this last Tuesday (December 1, 2015) while featuring on 'Oro to n lo', a Yoruba current affairs programme on Unilorin 89.3 FM. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor said that a pointer to the University's seriousness in realising this lofty goal was the successful manufacture of drone by a team of the University scientists led by Prof. S. A. Abdulkareem of the Department of Chemistry. According to Prof. Olatunji, the drone will be deployed for such functions as disaster management; security measure; weather monitoring; aerial imaging, and public safety. It will also take the pictures of crowd and towns, record events, dispatch letters, and give security reports of potential dangers on the campus. Prof. Olatunji disclosed that efforts are being made by the University management to ensure that in the next 10 years, products like Unilorin motor cars, Unilorin motorcycles, etc. will be in the Nigerian and African markets. It will be recalled that two sets of drones were d i s p l a y e d d uthr i n g t h e j u s t c o n c l u d e d 3 1 s t Convocation/40 Anniversary of the University to the admiration of the guests and members of the University community. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the drones were manufactured at the University of Ilorin with imported parts from abroad. The German-trained scientist disclosed that the management is doing everything possible to make sure that the University of Ilorin remains better by far not only in terms of academic excellence but also in research findings and discoveries. Prof. Olatunji also disclosed that the Unilorin Virology Centre is underway, pointing out that when completed, it will be saddled with the responsibility of conducting research into, identifying and combating new and existing diseases in the society. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor stressed further that on completion, the Virology Centre would drastically reduce foreign medical tourism by many Nigerian politicians and money bags. “It will help the institution in achieving its mandate of providing

community service through prevention and treatment of viral diseases”, he said. Prof. Olatunji also described the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) of the University as a world class resource with first class equipment courtesy of the commitment of the Vice-Chancellor of the nation's most patronised University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON). The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who commended the management of the University for making funds available for research, appealed to the Federal Government to make more funds available to tertiary institutions in the country to meet their needs. Prof. Olatunji described the choice of Prof. Isaac Adewole as the new Minister of Health as a wise decision, saying that the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan is the right man for the job. The Professor of Chemistry also urged academics never to shy away from politics, saying that the country will remain in the cesspool of poverty and underdevelopment if technocrats from the education sector prefer to be cowards. While commenting on the current fuel scarcity in the country, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor observed that until the government as well as other well-meaning Nigerians divert their attentions from crude oil to agriculture, the problem will continue to persist. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to make agriculture his priority and to encourage local farmers through soft loans. Prof. Olatunji however disclosed that the University administration has invested heavily on date palm plantation, oil palm plantation, Teak plantation, and Jatropha plantation, all of which will eventually boost the institution's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) on maturation. The Iree, Osun State born Prince said that the nation's diverse cultures, languages and values must be protected to prevent them from going extinct. He described culture as what everyone in the country must cherish and promote regardless of educational background

Technology needs committed culture to succeed- Aderounmu By Mustafa Abubakar

T

he President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Prof. G. A. Aderounmu, has said that without a committed culture it is difficult for technology to succeed in Africa. Prof. Aderounmu, who made the submission last Thursday (December 3, 2015) while delivering the 1st Public Lecture of Ilorin Business School (IBS), held at the University of Iloirin Multi-Purpose Hall, lamented that without dedicated technology only the most extraordinary culture can succeed. In his lecture, entitled “Developing Nigeria Universities through Industrial Collaborations”, the visiting Scholar of the University of Ghana Business School and Operations Department, Legon, Accra, said that in the knowledge age, universities and institutions of higher learning are the raw materials of economic development as coal mines were the raw materials of the industrial-age. Prof. Aderounmu, who was represented by a Fulbright Scholar and Professor of Information Security, Department of Computer Science, Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Prof. L. O. Babatope, described culture as “a big hurdle to be crossed before we can make the most of opportunities that technology and collaborative research provides”, adding that to cross the hurdle the use of innovative tools and creative thinking for teaching, learning and research must be of high priority. The don said, “We must also work the angles at dealing with the issues of lack of trust, ego-centricism and prejudices. Only then can we expect to make the most of our God-given potentials and endowment and translate them to meaningful productive dividends that can impact on our nation and the world at large positively.” He said that contact is of utmost importance in reducing prejudice and promoting a more tolerant and integrated society and as such is a prime mover in initiating and sustaining collaborations among competing agents, adding that if there is nothing to compare, there is no prejudice. Prof. Aderounmu said that Inter-tertiary Collaboration will promote seamless culture for graduates, provide research, evaluation, consultancy and

innovation relating to career development, improved graduate employability and leadership and codevelopment/co-delivery. To promote collaborations, the Guest Lecturer said that there must also be research centres, technology parks and incubators to facilitate collaboration between researchers and industry, and the sharing of research results. He also called for the creation of a one-stop-shop research website where both young and old academics would turn for information, advice, and guidance on research, is long overdue, to enable researchers learn about what has already been done in their areas of specialisation. Declaring the Lecture open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who congratulated the organizers, said that industries are the primary consumers of human and non-human products from Nigerian universities. He added that it is apparent that symbiotic relationship naturally exists between universities and industries towards achieving their separate objectives. The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Dean of Education, Prof. A. Adegoke, said, “Nigerian universities are currently facing a number of developmental challenges. It is hoped that the opportunity provided by this lecture will discuss and explore challenges that can be addressed within the sphere of industrial collaborates.” In her welcome address, the Director, Ilorin Business School, Prof. (Mrs) S. L. Adeyemi, said that the school was established in 2011 and became fully operational in October 2012 and moved to its present site in October 2014 from Sabo-Oke. She said that the University vision for establishing the school is to have a school that will be of an international standard that can compete with renowned business schools both in Nigeria and abroad. She expressed appreciation to the University management for the confidence reposed in her and the support the school enjoyed whenever there was need for it.

& Brush your teeth regularly to avoid tooth decay Bacteria present in the mouth converts leftover food particles on the teeth and between the teeth to acid. The combination of bacteria, acid and saliva forms plaque. This plaque dissolves the enamel on the tooth and forms holes called cavities. To avoid cavities brush your teeth after meals and before going to bed.

Ambali: A toast to our Midas @58

W

hen I posted a brief tribute on my facebook wall penultimate Sunday (November 29, 2015), gleefully announcing the birthday of our ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), the groundswell of “Likes” and complimentary remarks that post generated was heart-warming! Nearly everybody that cared to drop a comment had one good thing or another to say about the erudite Professor of Veterinary Medicine and, by extension, on the University that he has assiduously administered in the past three years. This, to me, was a reassuring testament to the massive admiration enjoyed by the nation's number one University and its Chief Executive Officer. It is not as if such outpouring of compliment came as a surprise, anyway. For, is our University not the toast of parents and students all over the country? Is it not the number one choice of most admission seekers for more than three years running? So, it is just natural that the chief driver of the Unilorin vision would receive such torrents of accolades. And what better time for such compliments than on the ViceChancellor's birthday? Writing in his 1993 book, “An Invented Life: Reflections on Leadership and Change”, American scholar of Leadership studies, Warren Bennis, explained that "a leader is not simply someone who experiences the personal exhilaration of being in charge. A leader is someone whose actions have the most profound consequences on other people's lives, forever and ever." In essence, leadership, according to Bennis, is the capacity to translate vision into reality. And this capacity has been amply demonstrated by our own Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali. Indeed, the determination to stamp his feet in the sands of time and make a positive difference in the lives of the people has hallmarked Prof. Ambali's entire life and especially his three-year old tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin. On the occasion of his 57th birthday this time last year, Town & Gown itemized some 57 milestones in the life and times of this astute administrator. And 365 days later, he has recorded many more landmark achievements that would marvel even the worst cynic. Suffice it to say at this point that the recent 40th anniversary and 31st convocation of the University were more than just the celebration of four decades of the University's

existence and 31st edition of the production of its graduates, as the two occasions were also used to showcase the achievements of the past three years of the Ambali Administration. The sheer success of the events in terms of their superb organisation and the bevy of personalities they were able to attract to the University, coupled with the commissioning of 22 projects, to round off the events, were all clear indicators of the administrative wizardry of the ViceChancellor and his management team. The commissioned projects included: the four-storey Faculty of Arts Complex; the new Senate Building; the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies Building; the Faculty of Education Lecture Hall; the Faculty of Science Phase IV; Faculty of Science Phase V; the Animal House Building; the Department of Optometry and Vision Science Building and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Workshops. Others were: the new Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall; the Faculty of Agriculture Laboratory; the Faculty of Management Sciences Lecture Hall; Access road to the Researchers' Village; Water and electricity supplies from the Main Campus to the College of Health Sciences; Six Sit-outs for students; the Medical Assessment Centre; Offices for the Physical Planning Unit; as well as a number of private hostels. Since he assumed the leadership of this University on th October 16, 2012, as the 9 Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali has not only sustained the legacy of excellence bequeathed to him by his predecessors, he has also greatly improved on it, bringing on new innovations that have invariably ingrained the University's name in the minds of those who desire quality and uninterrupted education. And like the proverbial Midas, Prof. Ambali has greatly turned the fortunes of the University around, winning laurels upon laurels for the nation's University of choice! Mr. Vice-Chancellor sir, Town & Gown admires and loves your energy, particularly the integrity you bring to your work, the joy you find in helping others and your enviable achievements in the field of academic excellence and purposeful leadership. Sir, as you turn 58, we pray Almighty Allah to grant you long life, continued tranquility, enduring sound health in a sound body, unceasing prosperity and above all, continued wisdom so that you may continue in your committed service to Him, the nation and humanity. Happy Birthday, sir!
