‘A crop of dedicated staff, our cutting edge’ Prof. Ambali explained further, “We ensure that we give the best education deserved. In the last 15 years, we have never closed our doors to our students. We have a dedicated crop of both academic and non-teaching staff that take their jobs seriously. We try to work towards our mission by ensuring that we create the enabling environment conducive for teaching and learning, and we cherish very much that when you come to the University of Ilorin you will feel proud to belong to the academic environment. We also ensure that the maintenance culture that is lacking in some universities is well adhered to”. Pointing out that the University has zero tolerance to vices such as cultism, examination malpractices, indecent dressing, corruption, and laziness to work, among others, the Vice-Chancellor said, “We have a well-cultured system on ground that whoever is caught will face the disciplinary committee and if found guilty will be asked to go and that has also given us a unique picture of a university”. “We continue to sustain whatever we initiated”, Prof. Ambali disclosed, explaining that “in the last three years, we started a programme of empowering all our students with PC tablets. This was well received by all and even this year will not be a difference. In a couple of weeks to come we will be distributing another set of PC

tablets to our new students”. The Vice-Chancellor also told the Minister, “We also make sure that our staff abide by the rules of the game. We make sure that they know that the University belongs to them and that has been demonstrated. For instance, the University ASUU has built hostel for our students and constructed shopping mall for members of the University Community”. Prof. Ambali said that the University of Ilorin also has high regards for international scholarship. He said, “We have a number of MoUs with a number of international partners. We also have quite a number of international students. We also have a very good and robust research outfit. We also won a total of 10 research grant awards out of 22. The University of Ilorin is the first to attain such height in terms of research grants awards and among several other achievements and that has made the University of Ilorin truly the preferred choice”. Also with the Minister during the meeting were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Folasade Yemisi Esan, among other top ministry officials.

Embrace vocational skills, Ijaiya advises students By Oyetunde Opeyemi

T

he Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Nike Sidikat Ijaiya, has advised students of the institution to develop positive attitude towards vocational skills and entrepreneurship, describing it as a potent tool towards achieving self-fulfilment and self-sufficiency. Prof. Ijaiya, who gave the advice recently while speaking at the first "Omoluabi Vocational and Entrepreneurship Programme” organised by the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), Unilorin Chapter, also admonished students of the University to remain focused, dedicated and submissive to the directives of the school authority so as to become successful graduates that are worthy in learning and character. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor urged the students to cultivate the habit of thinking outside the box and not waiting for the country to prepare, make and bake the cake of national treasury for them, saying that they should use their God-given talents to hit the ground running and break the yoke of dependency. Prof. Ijaiya applauded the leadership of NAOSS, Unilorin Chapter for its initiative and foresight, being the first Association to organise such programme for its members on campus.

In his speech, the Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji, advised students to learn the proper act of applying the three Hs (Head, Heart and Hand) in Education and urged them to contribute positively towards boosting the nation's economy and their personal purse. Also in his comment, the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre, University of Ilorin, Dr. Umar Gunu, represented on the occasion by Dr S.O Akanbi, implored students to make use of whatever opportunity that comes their ways. In his own remarks, the Patron of NAOSS, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, who declared the programme open, commended the Association for its brilliant performance and charged them to continue to evolve programmes that will have positive impact on the lives of its members. Earlier in his address, the President of NAOSS, Unilorin Chapter, Comrade Olasupo Abideen Opeyemi, said that the programme was organised primarily to enlighten students on how to develop positive attitude towards vocational and entrepreneurship skills to enable them become job creators rather than job seekers after their graduation.

New Year resolutions (Contd. from back page) So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die. At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they thought that the King of Israel had hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack them. So, they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives. The four men with leprosy entered each of the tents in the camp, and they took much food and money as they could. But they were not selfish. They did not keep the good news to themselves. They went quickly to inform the gatekeepers what they had seen, and the gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace. The King confirmed the news. Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. So a seah of the finest flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a shekel, as the LORD had said.

Meanwhile, the King had put the aide that doubted Elijah when he made the prediction in charge of the gate. In the stampede to rush out for the goodies, the people trampled the aide in the gateway, and he died, just as the man of God had foretold. Oh. I have no more space! But let me quickly direct you to the resolutions you can make from this story. First, make a resolution that you will not procrastinate any longer this year. You will take necessary steps at the right time to bring the prosperity you aspire this year. The lepers did not, and they brought fortunes to themselves and the people around them. Second, resolve to be optimistic about your life. Have the belief that God is able to do super abundantly above all we can ask or even think. When we fail to believe the promises of God, we fail to experience the blessings of God whether for salvation or elevation we desire. Third, resolve to be selfless and be kind to people around you. Like our ViceChancellor has been doing, do your best to put smiles in the face of people around you. Once again, Happy New Year!

New Year resolutions

T

he Podium is dedicating this first column in the Year 2016 to wish every member of the University of Ilorin Community a happy and prosperous year. The beginning of every Gregorian calendar, otherwise known as Western calendar, which is, of course, internationally the most widely- adopted civil calendar since it was introduced in 1582, is associated with many superstitions, myths, customs and traditions. It is the time to look forward wishing for a better year and greater prosperity. Besides, January, which marks the beginning of a new year, represents the fresh start of a new year after a period of remembrance of the passing year with a gratitude to God, Thus, this is the time for each and every one of us to give glory to God for preserving our lives throughout the last 365 days and for extending our lives to begin another count of 365 days of another year. It is His will, not ours. We enjoy this rare privilege as a result of His willful and infinite mercies. Alhamdullilahi. We give God the glory. We adore Him. We appreciate Him. Because the beginning of the New Year is associated with a myriad of superstitions and myths, we all usually like to begin it with a deep sense of purgation, purification and rejuvenation. This explains why, in some cultures, people begin the New Year by plunging themselves in water at the beach for purgation and purification. This also explains the sober and fervent prayer sessions many of us in this clime plunged ourselves into on the New Year Eve. Indeed, New Year signifies a renewal of life. Hence, at the beginning of the New Year, we all wear the spirit of celebration for the regeneration, while we desire to discard the old and worn out ways of life. We all aspire for a better life entwined with good luck, prosperity and favours. In some Western cultures, there is a superstition that a visit by a man with dark hair and eating anything in the shape of a ring like donuts and cabbage on the first day, which is seen as symptomatic of the remaining days of the year, herald a year with good luck and prosperity. In order to have a clean slate on which to start the New Year, people in times past in the Western cultures used to make sure they had all their borrowings cleared by the first day of a New Year. Those were the days before such complexities as credit buying. And this is the origination of the New Year resolutions. Therefore, New Year resolution is a resolve or aspiration to begin a year with a sense of newness in all its ramifications. It is a way of resolving to turn a new leaf in the New Year. In order to give the members of Unilorin

Community a tip of the New Year resolutions they can make, let me retell the story of four lepers narrated in the Bible- Kings 6: 24 to the end, and Kings 7: 1 to the end. The story is usually entitled “If we stay here, we will die; if we move, we will die”. At a point in time, Ben-Hadad, King of Aram, mobilised his entire army and marched up and laid siege to Samaria- the reason for which Elijah said was because of the high level of iniquities and disobedience of God's regulations by the people in the city. Thinking that the enemies were better equipped and reinforced coupled with the assurance that the wall around the city could sufficiently protect the people against enemies' invasion, the King of Samaria, Jeremiah, ordered that everybody should stay within the city. But the siege lasted longer than they expected, and the city soon began to suffer famine. There was a great famine in the city, so terrible that a donkey's head, which ordinarily the people would not eat, was being sold for 80 shekels of silver, and a quarter of a cab of seed pods for five shekels. A shekel then would be equivalent to N20,000 now. The famine got so terrible at a point that the people in the city turned into cannibals, arranging and exchanging their children for slaughter to provide the only option for food. Angered and depressed, the King of the city thought the disaster befalling the city was from God and he should not spare the life of the man of God-Elijah. But at the point of attempting to kill Elijah, Elijah, in comforting the King, announced the prompting revelation he got from God that “by this time of tomorrow, a seah of the finest flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria”. One of the aides of the King beside him was very pessimistic and mocked the revelation by saying to Elijah that “even if God opened the floodgate of Heaven, what you said could not happen- to sell two seah of barley for a shekel? Elijah responded by swearing that the aide would see it with his own eyes but he would not eat any of it. All this while, there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. Their own travails were so enormous that at a point they thought of the need to take a step. They knew they had a 50-50 chance of surviving if they could summon courage to go to the camps of the enemy to solicit succour. They said to one another, “Why stay here until we die? If we say, 'We'll go into the city'—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. (Contd. on page 11)
