‘Unilorin yet to release 2016/2017 admission cut-off marks’ For some time now, the ratio of admitted students to the number of applicants has been a serious concern to universities in the country, admission seekers and their parents. For instance, out of the more than 103, 000 candidates that applied to study in the University of Ilorin in the 2015/2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), only 11, 057 could be admitted due to the low admission quota granted the most subscribed university by the regulatory bodies. Fielding questions on the

radio programme, Prof. Ambali noted that the management of the University was seriously worried that most Nigerian youths cannot gain admission into their choice institutions due to the low carrying capacity of Nigerian universities. While commenting on the rumour that the University of Ilorin had released its cut-off marks for the 2016/2017 admission exercise, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that no institution in Nigeria will announce its cut-off mark until the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National

Universities Commission (NUC) determine the national cut-off marks. Prof. Ambali said that the University of Ilorin would only announce its cut-off marks after the meeting of all tertiary education institutions in the country with the NUC and JAMB. H e , h o w e v e r, w a r n e d desperate admission seekers to be wary of scammers, as the University of Ilorin's admission is not for sale. He said that the University management has devised a very stiff punishment for any of its staff that is caught engaging in such dirty deal.

NUC team commends Unilorin’s Biomedical Engineering Department “We need all the support because we are just starting”, the Vice-Chancellor said, adding that “we will give the Department all the support it needs” Speaking on the provision of books to the Department, Prof. Ambali noted that e-learning is what is in vogue now, and as such the University is investing in e-library to provide the best and up-to-date academic resources for the students. While receiving the two-man team earlier before the commencement of the verification exercise, the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy ViceChancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, pointed out that resource verification is an opportunity to cross-fertilise ideas. He stated that the University of Ilorin is pushing the frontiers of tertiary education in Nigeria despite the challenges by ensuring the continuity of standard. He disclosed that the University has been eager to start the course long ago before its eventual commencement four years ago, submitting that medicine would be anchored on engineering as it is already being done. The Vice-Chancellor told

members of the team, “Thank you for encouraging us. You have come to fire us on. We are contributing in our own little way to the advancement of knowledge in the country and we want people to come and see how we do it just as we also go out to learn best practices”. He reminded the NUC verification team that the Faculty of Engineering was some time ago adjudged to be the best in Africa. The NUC resource verification team leader, Prof. Goddy Chuba Okoye, expressed his delight to be visiting the university of choice, explaining that the resource verification is a national assignment for the continuous growth of tertiary education in Nigeria. Prof. Okoye, who was with Mrs. Clara Abu on the team, also acknowledged the fact that Biomedical Engineering is the future of medicine, noting that “there is nothing done in medicine that will not reflect engineering". He commended the University for commencing the course as he pointed out few areas where the University needs to make adjustments. “On the whole, I want to c o m m e n d t h e e ff o r t o f t h e

management of the University of Ilorin and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. You have done well for a start”, Prof. Okoye concluded. The Vice-Chancellor was joined at the courtesy visit by the D e p u t y Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Deputy Bursar, Mr. O. Unilorin loses ex-DVC (Contd. from front page)

According to the ViceChancellor, “Prof. Oladele was wellfocused, very just and resultoriented. He will be sorely missed by everybody within the University community especially those who worked very closely with him both at the Central Administration, the Office of the Deputy ViceChancellor (RTI) and the scientific community within and outside Nigeria.” In an emotion-laden voice, Prof. Ambali also described the late Prof. Oladele as “a very religious person, a caring family man and a good scientist.” The Vice-Chancellor then wished the late scientist eternal rest, adding, “We also pray Almighty God to give the family he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss while assuring them that we are with them in prayers.”

In his own reaction, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji described the death of his immediate past predecessor as “sudden and shocking”, recalling how close the two of them have been since the past 30 years or so. The DVC RTI, who prayed for the peaceful repose of Prof. Oladele's soul, said, “Prof. Oladele was wonderful, he was a gentleman, he never made trouble with anybody, …yesterday we were all shocked but that is the decision of God and all of us should take solace in God almighty that whatever He has designed and has ordained will come to pass.” On his part, the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, who described Prof. Oladele's demise as a great loss to the University, said his positive impacts will remain indelible in the minds of members of

the University community. He then prayed Almighty God to grant the departed soul peaceful repose and his family the fortitude to bear the loss. Born in Ilesha, Osun State on July 8, 1949, the late Prof. Oladele joined the services of the University of Ilorin in 1976 as a Graduate Assistant. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 1986 and became a Professor of Plant Biology in 1995. The late scholar delivered his Inaugural Lecture, entitled “The only one we have”, on November 7, 2002. He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI) on June 19, 2012. He is survived by his wife and children.

he Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, has lauded the University of Ilorin on its numerous achievements as a foremost citadel of higher learning in Nigeria. The Emir gave this commendation last Wednesday (April 30, 2016) while receiving a delegation of the National Executive Committee of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, led by the National Vice-President, Mr. Wale Fasakin. The delegation had on behalf of the National body paid a courtesy visit on the Chancellor to congratulate him on his appointment as Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and conferment with a honorary doctorate of the University during the last convocation ceremonies.

Ambali tasks youths on reading culture By Ishaq Babatunde

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has called on Nigerian youths to develop positive attitude towards the reading culture, and always champion community development projects so as to have a united, progressive and prosperous society. Prof. Ambali made the call on Sunday (March 27, 2016) while speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebration and public presentation of a book by The Pakata Patriots, Ilorin. The Vice-Chancellor, who was the Chairman of the occasion, pointed out that constant reading would widen the horizon of the readers and also serve as a potent tool for rapid national development. Prof. Ambali commended the people of Pakata for coming up with the book entitled ''Our Illustrious icons: A biography of Selected Prominent People of Pakata Area, Ilorin, 1831 to 2015",

which he described as “significant to all sons and daughters of Pakata and beyond”. He then urged the organisers to make the book available on the internet. In his sermon on the occasion, Sheikh Daud Abdulmajeed Alfa Nla admonished Kwara youths to be lawabiding and shun all acts that are inimical to the progress and development of the society. Reviewing the Book, the Director of Public Affairs, National Population Commission, Dr Isiaq Yahaya, noted that the 370-page book features the biographies of 70 people from Pakata area of Ilorin who have contributed significantly toward the propagation of Islam and the general development of the society. Earlier in his welcome address, the President of Pakata Patriots, Ilorin, Mallam Shehu Aliyu, said that the idea of the book was to immortalise some Pakata icons, who have contributed immensely to the development of the area. Mallam Aliyu explained that the motive was to comprehensively

show the whole world the calibre of human resources which Pakata has been blessed with, pointing out that those eminent forerunners in the book will serve as a mirror to the younger ones and shining models to the upcoming generations. Also in his speech, the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, pledged to name Oke Pakata LGEA School after the late Prof. Shehu Jimoh, an indigene of the area, in recognition of his valuable contributions to the society. The Governor, who spoke through the State Commissioner for Education, Engr. Musa Yeketi, explained that the decision to immortalise the late Prof. Jimoh became imperative in view of his landmark achievements in the education sector and community development in general. The governor also assured the people of Pakata and Kwara State in general of government's commitment to evolving projects and programmes that will have direct positive impact on the lives of the residents.

he Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), University of Ilorin has organised a send-forth ceremony in honour of its immediate past Director, Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, and three other Deputy Directors who had served in the Unit in recognition of their tremendous contributions to the Centre. The past Deputy Directors who were honoured alongside Prof. Oladiji (now Director, Central Research Laboratory), at a ceremony, which took place last Thursday (March 31, 2016) are: Prof. M.M. Akanbi, now Director, School of Preliminary Studies, Fufu; Dr U. Gunu, now Director, Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), and Dr. J.A Bamiduro. Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, commended the efforts of the immediate past Director of CREDIT, Prof. Oladiji, and her team for their contributions to the Centre. He specifically hailed Prof. Oladiji's humility and her attitude of “carrying people along” throughout her tenure at the Centre. While describing CREDIT and the RTI as Siamese twins, Prof. Olatunji enjoined both offices to work more closely together holistically in order to attain optimal results and record greater successes for the University. According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, “CREDIT is unique to RTI because of the

common objective of research, which they both share. CREDIT has come to stay; CREDIT will continue to grow and be a focal point of all ideas that will move this University forward” Prof. Olatunji also commended the other honourees “for the various contributions that they have made in their respective capacity as Deputy Directors that made Oladiji shine so brilliantly all over the campus”. Welcoming the new Director of CREDIT, Prof. B.S. Alabi, whom he described as “a very humble person”, Prof. Olatunji prayed God to grant the new Director “knowledge, wisdom and the understanding to elevate CREDIT to greater heights than you met it.” In his remarks, the Registrar, M r. E m m a n u e l O b a f e m i , appreciated the contributions of the Centre to the Registry Seminar, pointing out that the Registry has benefitted a lot from CREDIT. Mr. Obafemi noted that without CREDIT, there would be no successful training programme on campus, saying, “I appreciate CREDIT so much that I don't think I can do anything now without letting CREDIT know”. Speaking earlier, the new Director of CREDIT, Prof. Alabi, said that “the Centre has recorded a lot of achievements throughout her (Prof. Oladiji's) tenure and she didn't do it alone, you people have assisted her greatly; kudos to you all. I pray to Almighty God that you will also

succeed in the assignment that you are carrying out now …You have left indelible marks at CREDIT.” In her response, Prof. Oladiji, who expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve, thanked all those who had worked with her during her tenure as well as her successor who had deemed it fit to organise the send-forth programme. In his own remarks, a former Deputy Director of the Centre, who is now Director Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), Dr Gunu described CREDIT as a training ground in all ramifications. He said that the experience he garnered while at the Centre cannot be underestimated. “Today what is happening in TEC, is a reflection of what is happening in CREDIT and I am greatly humbled by this sendforth” he said. On his part, Dr. Bamiduro said working with Prof. Oladiji at CREDIT gave him the opportunity to improve on his skills as he gained relevant experiences through the training programmes organised for different categories of staff within the University. He advised members to keep the flag flying in line with the mission and vision of the Centre. Also in his remarks, another former Deputy Director of the Centre, Prof. Akanbi, recalled the excellent working relationship he had with Prof. Oladiji, who he described as “a lady full of lots of ideas and who sought to achieve so many things”.

Adieu! Oladele as I knew him “Man becomes discourse after his demise/ Be a good discourse for him who observes” – Arab poet

W

hen the text message of the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin Chapter, Dr Usman A. Raheem, hit my cell phone last Wednesday (March 30, 2016) afternoon, it was like a letter bomb. It partly read: “The Academic Staff Union of this great University announces with heavy heart the death of Prof. F. A. Oladele, former DVC and a committed member of the University community….” It was as if I was hit by a missile and I could feel my heart catch shock waves as my jaw dropped. Prof. Felix Ayotunde Oladele was a virtuous soul for whom everyone had utmost respect. Though we interacted mostly officially, I knew the late Professor of Plant Biology as a gentleman par excellence, a through-bred scholar, an award-winning PhD supervisor, an academic extraordinaire, a deep source of inspiration and the proverbial full tank that made the least noise. My first acquaintance with Prof. Oladele was between June 8 and 11, 2010 when the University organised a retreat for the revision of its Strategic Plan at Whispering Palms Resort, Badagry, Lagos. I served in two or three sub-committees during the exercise including the one on Environmental Policy with Prof. Oladele as Chairman. I found working with him very rewarding as his depth and humility struck a chord in me. My superlative impression of this magnetic personality would receive a seal of authority later in the year when the University inaugurated the Unilorin Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) on December 20, 2010. As part of his address on the occasion, the then Vice-Chancellor, the well-known Prof. Is-haq O. Oloyede (OFR), had said that “everyone should be a soldier in the war against corruption in the country because the consequence of corruption is an acid rain that wreaks havoc indiscriminately.” Now, the consequence of corruption he talked about is grinding us to a halt with long queues at filling stations, sky-rocketing prices of good and services and the entire mess some past vagabonds in power had made of the country. But lest I digress, the former Vice-Chancellor found no one to be his General in the “war against corruption” than a man of transparent honesty and unimpregnable integrity, Prof. Oladele. The appointment was thus an attestation of his character and quality as such a position required more than just academic qualification.

As a pioneer, Prof. Oladele laid a solid foundation for ACTU upon which his successor, Prof. A. O. Ogunlela, built such that when the former American Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Walter Carrington, came to deliver our 29th Convocation Lecture on Monday, October 21, 2013, ACTU reflected in his lecture. As I noted in “Carrington's tribute to Unilorin,” which appeared on this page on November 4, 2013, Ambassador Carrington said, “I congratulate you, Vice-Chancellor Ambali, for the University's Anti-Corruption and Monitoring Unit. Your address on the occasion of the Public Presentation of the ACTU Handbook two months ago is one of the best that I have read. With your indulgence, I would like to repeat a few of your words which cannot be heard too often….” In essence, ACTU attracted international attention and acclaim to the University. It was in acknowledgement of Prof. Oladele's personality that he received such a huge support of the University of Ilorin Senate when he was overwhelmingly elected Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the 226th meeting of Senate on Friday, May 25, 2012 consequent upon which he assumed office as DVC (Research Innovation and Technology) on June 19, 2012, a position he meritoriously occupied till 2014. Give it to him, Prof. Oladele had this conviviality and affableness around him that always made you feel secure. Always armed with a disarming smile, he would greet you with respect and tap your hand playfully in a friendly manner. The opening words of the University anthem, “In love, peace and harmony, we shall build the tower” actually characterised him as he was generally loving, peaceful and harmonious. He was so angelic in demeanor. It was such an icon, versatile scientist and academic role model that we lost last Wednesday. With Prof. Oladele's death, again, the academic world, nay humanity at large, has lost one its finest and brightest members. Yet, our consolation lies in the fact he lived well and he still continues to live in the hearts of several thousands of those he had positively influenced, including this writer. May the Almighty God give the family, the ViceChancellor, Prof. Abdul Ganiyu Ambali (OON), and the entire University community the fortitude to bear this huge loss. Adieu, Prof. Felix Ayotunde Oladele, the pure soul! May your gentle soul rest in peace!
