Don canvasses herbal remedies for sexual dysfunctions In the Inaugural Lecture, entitled “Knocking Down the Barriers to Four O'clock Activities and Reproductive Inadequacies”, the don urged the government to “wake up to the health benefit and economic advantages of herbal medicines, set up guidelines and policies on the use of medicinal plants, and create a conducive environment by supporting research with grants that will involve industry-linkages”. Prof. Yakubu, who also canvassed a close rapport between modern health workers and traditional healers as well as relevant Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), urged the government to “develop our own traditional medical systems that should be appropriately t a g g e d N i g e r i a n Tr a d i t i o n a l Medicine”. While suggesting that herbal remedies should begin to carry proper warning labels that would enable consumers to know the contents of their remedies”, the inaugural lecturer pointed out that “unlabeled products on the shelf should be looked at with suspicion”. Prof. Yakubu also advocated the management and conservation of the nation's indigenous plants as well as commercialisation and exportation of its herbal remedies, adding that the teaching of general aspects of Traditional Medicine of Nigeria should be incorporated into the country's secondary school syllabus. While clarifying the title of his lecture said, “Four O'clock activity denotes early morning sex or early morning penile-vaginal intercourse”. He explained that

“although legitimate sex can be performed at any time of the day, the best time to have sexual intercourse is not in the dark night hours but early in the morning between 3am to 5am which typically is 4am, hence the term, Four O' Clock”. Prof. Yakubu recalled several divorce cases reported in the newspapers, tracing most of them to sexual inadequacies. He said, “Having sex first thing in the morning and a minimum of three to four times a week is not only good for love life, but also beneficial health-wise”. The benefits, according to him include: lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart attack by releasing oestrogen in women and protecting against heart diseases and prostate cancer; boosting the immune system by stimulating the body's first line of defense, immunoglobulin A, against cold and fever; regulating menstruation by influencing the levels of lutenizing hormones that controls menstrual period in women and help sleep better; releasing the feel-good chemical, oxytocin, that enhances closeness with ones' partner and makes people happier for a longer period of time and as a form of exercise, it reduces weight. Prof. Yakubu, who disclosed that he came to the field of Biochemistry by divine arrangement, further advocated that “couples and potential couples should be sensitised not to pretend when discussing sexual matters with their partners”, According to him, “the discourse on sexual and reproductive issues should no longer be regarded as a taboo, subject of controversy and extreme secrecy, since they are essential parts

of quality of life”. The Inaugural Lecturer said, “Sex is the most powerful creative force given to man. People should not play carelessly with this powerful force outside the bounds of marriage, if they do, it will destroy them and those close to them”. He added that “sexual and reproductive dysfunctions are common among men and women in the world, Nigeria inclusive, and as such, regular screening/check-ups by individuals is highly advocated”. Turning to his colleagues, fellow researchers, Prof. Yakubu stressed the need for “accurate and sufficient data on the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and reproductive dysfunction in Nigeria, as estimates of prevalence/occurrence are important in understanding the true burden of male and female sexual dysfunction and in identifying risk factors for prevention efforts”. He said, “The development of a compendium of indigenous plants with potential and clinical benefits for reproductive health is hereby advocated”. He stated further, “Clinical and representative studies should be encouraged in order to complete the evaluation of the potential effects of medicinal plants in the treatment of sexual and reproductive inadequacies of the males and females. It is also important for physicians knocking down sexual and reproductive inadequacies to have some knowledge about the medicinal plants whose relevant scientific investigations have been done and how to combine this therapy with the modern ones”.

‘Unilorin Lakeside to become hub for water sport’ ( Contd.from page3 ) Prof. Ambali, who was represented during the visit by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, expressed the optimism that very soon a student of the University would be representing the country at the global events. He then pledged the readiness of the institution's management to support the Rowing Federation in

Akoshile seeks better deal for Unilorin Renewable Energy Centre By Oyindamola Ajayi

T

he Director of the Unilorin Renewable Energy Centre (UREC), Prof. C. O. Akoshile, has urged the management of the University to assist the Centre in procuring solar concentrator for the conversion of thermal energy to electricity if the University's dream of generating renewable energy is to be realised. Prof. Akoshile stated this penultimate Thursday (September 22, 2016) while presenting the report of UREC team's visit to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and the South African Renewable Energy Technological Centre (SARETEC) to the ViceChancellor and his management team. The Professor of Physics stated that in order to make meaningful contributions in providing alternative means to power generation, UREC needs facilities that will be useful. Hence, there is need for the administration to assist in providing this avenue for the solar energy conversion. The Director explained the various facilities and renewable energy activities seen in SARETEC during his team's visit to South Africa, noting that this could also be

achieved by UREC. He stressed the need for cooperation between UREC and SARETEC. Prof. Akoshile explained that SARETEC is geared towards training, especially at technical level, adding that students and staff, that are willing to undergo technical training will benefit immensely from such a centre. The Director said, “SARETEC has given us the permission to bring in students at a reduced cost”, adding that “the certificate that will be given to students at the end of the training is not PhD or Masters but a Diploma and a maximum of Bachelors. So, the centre's intention is not to duplicate academic environment but to be able to provide energy in various forms”. Pointing out that UREC is poised to launch out forcefully, Prof. Akoshile said, “To achieve this, apart from the provision of an avenue for the solar concentrator thermal energy conversion to electricity, UREC also requires a meaningful take-off grant”. In his remarks, the ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), described the initiative as a good one, noting that raw materials for other sources of renewable energy, such as waste, are available to make the project a reality.

Prof. Ambali then advised that the Director meet with people in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering and discuss with them on how to kickstart the project. In her own remarks, the D e p u t y Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya, pointed out that the project is one that needs a lot of learning, planning and commitment. She described the initiative as “a good project especially as this is a period in Nigeria where we have to look for other options for power generation”. On his part, the Deputy ViceChancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. G. A. Olatunji, thanked the University for the “marvellous opportunity”, saying, “We want to see something in Ilorin from the South African group through their assistance”. Other members of the management present at the presentation were the Registrar, Mr E. D. Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi; the Bursar, Mr Saka Yusuf Abiodun; and the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Talabi.

Peace Day in retrospect

P

enultimate Wednesday (September 21), the world commemorated the 2016 International Day of Peace, otherwise known as Peace Day, with various activities across the world. A creation of the United Nations General Assembly in 1982 by Resolution 36/67, Peace Day was first observed on September 21, 1982. In 2001, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 55/282 which formally declared September 21 the annual day for peace, devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among nations and peoples”. The theme for this year's Peace Day was “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”. In this respect, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, urged all: “Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality, to build a greener planet and make sure no one is left behind.” In furthering the philosophy behind Peace Day, itself being one of the most peaceful and stable universities in Nigeria, the University of Ilorin, through its Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, started to mark the Day last year with a public lecture that sensitised diverse stakeholders. This year, the Centre hosted the Chairman of Africa Peace Research and Education Association (AFREA), the African wing of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA), Dr Olufemi Oluniyi, to address the public, with a special focus on students and stakeholders in peace work like Peace December, Nigeria, Foundation for Peace Professionals (FPP) and Passion for Peace Initiative (PPI) at the venue of its Conflict Management Capacity Building Retreat in Ilorin. In his lecture, “The Imperatives of Peace and Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” Dr Oluniyi noted that Britain was not a country to be reckoned with some 500 years ago. However, as a result of opting for peace and avoiding war, Britain had a sustained 200 years of harmony that ushered in industrial revolution and phenomenal development. Therefore, “if Nigeria makes the choice for peace in 2016, it will reap the dividends of sustainable development,” he said. Dr Oluniyi, with insights from data on the US, Britain, Botwana as well as Sweden and other Scandinavian countries, used the forum to highlight four major areas that threaten peace and sustainable development in Nigeria. These, according to him, are the Niger Delta militancy, the rising incidence of kidnapping,

cultism and Boko Haram. To arrest restiveness in the Niger Delta, the scholar strongly supported the suggestion of former Governor Godswill Akpabio that the Federal Government should establish a major city in the region that will be a hub of commerce, industry and investment. He related the rise of kidnapping to the militancy in the region arguing that opportunities that a mega city would open up will drain kidnappers of their source of recruitment. On Boko Haram, after saying the problem “came with a fury in 2002, with fire in 2007 and with firestorm in 2007”, he suggested that multiple approaches are required to deal with it. He encouraged proper orientation of youths by religious bodies. He also urged universities to conduct research into cultism and banish the menace from our campuses. In essence, the imperatives of today are, according to the expert, that “Nigeria needs to embrace peace for itself and its behaviours towards its neighbours; prioritise its activities in order to excel at a critical area that can drive the other sectors; build a Federal City in the Niger Delta; find softer approaches to the problem of Boko Haram and conduct research into and burst cultism.” On his part, Professor Osisioma B. C. Nwolise of the University of Ibadan, who was a special guest on the occasion, drew attention to how traditional approaches can address some of the problems facing Nigeria today. He advocated the use of “Strategic Security Intelligence”, an office for which should be set up in the Office of the National Security Adviser to the President. While stressing the importance of security, he identified how Strategic Security Intelligence could have helped in identifying the exact location of the abducted Chibok girls citing various examples and how social justice would have helped Nigeria out of the woods. Though the International Day of Peace might have come and gone, the truth of the matter is that everyday is a peace day and Nigerians should be educated enough to always give peace a chance. As John F. Kennedy said, “Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.” Peace is also our collective responsibility because “if the human race wishes to have a prolonged and indefinite period of material prosperity, they have only got to behave in a peaceful and helpful way toward one another,” as Winston Churchill once stressed.
