‘Unilorin products are well brought up’ The Vice-Chancellor said that wherever they are, the Unilorin products have “always demonstrated that they graduated from this University not only in learning but also in sound character that matter. So, we can always give you that assurance that our students are well brought up. They have been properly moalded through the furnace of the University academically and morally”. He noted that the NYSC has remained relevant and significant to national life over the years, saying the Scheme had been bedeviled by challenges, in particular, the insurgency posed by the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-eastern part of the country. He, however, commended the NYSC for doing everything possible towards alleviating the suffering of the corps members and making life a bit comfortable for them. In his remarks, the Deputy Director, Mobilisation, NYSC Abuja, Mr. Abdulrasheed,

explained that the purpose of the visit was to educate the prospective corps members on what they need to know about the process of mobilisation to facilitate and guarantee a hitch-free process, especially with the deployment of online procedures in the mobilisation process. Speaking earlier, the Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs, Mrs. Kikelomo Sallee, said that the sensitisation was important in order to guarantee a hitch-free mobilisation exercise, which, in the past, was usually fraught with some challenges. Present on the occasion were the Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N.Y.S. Ijaiya; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Deputy Bursar, Mr. Munir Dere, the Deputy Registrar, Mr M. S. Adegoke, who represented the Registrar, and the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun.

Ambali receives Clean and Grean Award of Excellence The award, presented to Prof. Ambali in his office last Thursday (November 26, 2015), was in recognition of the superb environmental cleanliness and aesthetic beauty of the University campus. In his remarks before the presentation, the leader of the contractors, Mr. Nurudeen Ibrahim, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on the successful hosting of the just st th concluded 31 Convocation and 40 anniversary of the University. He said that the award was to recognise and appreciate the great job the Vice-Chancellor and his team have been doing and to encourage and challenge them to do more. Highlighting the various projects executed by the University administration under the leadership of Prof. Ambali, Mr. Ibrahim said, “Your giant strides and achievements have led us to present you with the Clean and Green Award. The Clean means that you have achieved and you are still achieving and by the special grace of Almighty Allah, you will still achieve more than what you have done so far. You have made the environment clean in terms of physical achievements, structures, staff welfare, provision of amenities for teaching and non-teaching staff. These shall forever remain evergreen in the minds of staff after you might have completed your tenure of administration as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.” Mr. Ibrahim, who commended Prof. Ambali's leadership style and simplicity, also expressed gratitude to the University management for the renewal of their

contract for the year 2015. In his response, the Vice-Chancellor expressed delight in receiving the Clean and Green Award, which he stated, “is for every one of us and that includes you.” Prof. Ambali explained that one of the cardinal aims behind the establishment of any University is community service. “And part of the responsibility of each and every one of us as staff, is to teach, to carry out research and to positively affect the community where we live. So, it is towards this that we zero in on making sure that the community participation in our activities is well enshrined and I am happy that you have keyed in very well; I am happy that you have been given another letter of award and that shows to demonstrate our appreciation for what you have been doing.” The Award presentation ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N.Y.S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. G.A. Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mr. M. Why Unilorin Archives and Documentation Centre was set up - Olaoye (Contd. from front page) In the Lecture, entitled “Critical Choice for Nigeria Universities: Muddling through or Establishing Records and Archives Management Programme,” the Guest Lecturer, who is also the Director, Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan, enjoined governments at all levels as well as the private sector, to accord priority to records management as an important corporate responsibility that will allow for the provision of accurate, timely and relevant information required for decision-making, which would result in better strategic planning for the country. Highlighting his contributions to his field of study, the scholar disclosed that findings from a study conducted by him on disaster planning revealed that “most of the places where we had fire disasters are places where people put fires deliberately to hide their malfeasance. When they have done something terrible, they put fire there and run away. They usually attack financial records...which means that if you can have proper record-keeping, then you can expose illegalities, corruption and all these other crimes can be easily exposed.” In this light, the don pointed out that “recordkeeping is an antidote to corruption”, maintaining that “transparency and accountability is part and parcel of proper records management.” Prof. Alegbeleye, who is also the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on the Management of Archives and Records Management in Nigeria, noted that Unilorin was one of the few institutions in the country with an established archival centre. He then commended the past and present management of the University for establishing the UADC, saying that, by so doing, Unilorin has complied with the National Archives Act of 1992, which requires that all public organisations above 25 years old must establish an archive, and the Freedom of Information Act of 2011 that requires public organisations to manage their records in order to ensure prompt access to them. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), represented at the occasion by the Deputy ViceChancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, explained that the importance of record-keeping and documentation cannot be overemphasized. Prof. Olatunji said, “If you throw away your history, you are indeed just going to be tossed up and down and you won't have a specific direction on how to move your community and humanity forward”. Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of the UADC, Prof. R.A. Olaoye, noted that the mission of the Centre is to preserve documents for posterity, adding that the haphazard storage and retrieval systems which

4

have led to poor management of vital records provided the catalyst for the establishment of the Centre. Prof. Olaoye said, “At present, we have in the archives, vital University records and documents of different titles well over one thousand. Also, there are collections of pictures of University Administrators, important personalities, events and heritage sites. We equally have in stock research projects from the University/ Faculties/Departments/Centres and Units. The project works cut across academic disciplines. In the same vein, we have been able to preserve our museum gallery, artefacts and materials of cultural value. It should be stated that we keep on intensifying our survey works to be able to acquire from communities outside the University, materials and documents of enduring archival value for preservation at our Centre.” In his goodwill message, the Governor of Kwara State, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Amina S. Ahmed, also stressed the importance of records management in an organisation especially in Nigerian universities. The Governor disclosed that he recently approved the establishment of a Committee on Personnel Data based systems development in Kwara State to ascertain the authenticity of all records of personnel in the State's civil service and identify the loopholes and shortcomings of the existing payroll system with the overall aim of upgrading the system to a modern one and to integrate the State's central data base to ensure reliable data registry for efficiency and effectiveness. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board of UADC, Prof. A.O. Adekunle, expressed appreciation to the management of the University, saying, “We need more of your support to take us to the next level…our Centre is ready to do more work for the University of Ilorin.” The event was attended by royal fathers including the Emir of Ilorin, represented by the Magaji Nda of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Soliu Woru Mohammed; the Elerin of Erin-Ile, Oba Ibrahim Ajibola; the Onipe of Ipe, Oba Mufutau Adebayo Lawal; the Onira of Ira, Oba Abdulwahab Oyewole Oyetoro; the Olojoku of Ojoku, Oba Abdulrasaq Afolabi; the Alagbeku of Agbeku, Oba Abdulazeez Agboola; the Olukotun of Ikotun-Ile, Oba (Dr) Abdulrasaq Adebayo Abioye and the Arigbamu of Agbamu, Oba Olusola Olaniyi Dare. Principal Officers of the University present at the occasion were the Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mr. M. S. Adegoke, and the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; Deans of Faculties, Directors, staff and students of the University.

& Replace toothbrushes frequently Change your toothbrush every couple of weeks as their bristles can become infested with bacteria and the moisture in toothbrushes serves as an ideal breeding ground for them over time. Frayed bristles are a clear indication that it is high time to get yourself a new toothbrush. Children's toothbrushes need to be changed more frequently, keeping in mind their lower immunity levels.

AWAU's confab, Unilorin's swagger

T

he third annual conference of the Association of West Africa Universities (AWAU), formed at the University of Ilorin, was held last week between November 22 and 26 at the Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Abuja, a university mentored by the better by far University. The theme of the conference was as thought-provoking as it was pungent: “Turbulence in University Education in West Africa: Quality, Mentorship and Access”. Apart from drawing participants from 11 countries, which are Benin Republic, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Turkey, it also attracted the participation of the crème-de-lacrème of the education stakeholders. The roll call was intimidating, showing the quality of the organisational acumen of the body. The Vice-Chairman is our amiable ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), and the Secretary-General is our dynamic immediate past ViceChancellor, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede (OFR). The opening ceremony last Monday was chaired by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, represented by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and keynote speakers included former Olusegun Obasanjo, ably represented by Prof. Peter Okebukola; former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, our own highly esteemed Prof. C. N. B. Tagoe. Ministers, Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, former Ministers of Education from Chad and Togo, the Secretary Generals of the Association of African Universities (AAU) and Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU) as well as the Executive Secretaries and representatives of NUC, NBTE, TEFFund, ECOWAS, among others, all graced the event. What was interesting throughout the entire conference was the regularity of reference to the University of Ilorin, the University many Vice-Chancellors openly declared they were looking up to. And the University of Ilorin too has swagger, let's say the truth. Everybody drank Unilorin Water, over 1,200 bottles of which were readily available to the participants. I could see how several dignitaries were admiring the bottles. Then, the Marco Polo bus and its Coaster companion, emblazoned with the name of the University, criss-crossed Abuja taking dignitaries to their hotels and elsewhere. Everywhere, it was Unilorin! Those of us from the University could not but feel proud because the feeling was electrifying, i.e. standing out among 256 West African

universities. I remember the recent online controversy generated by the graduates of the University of llorin who had this swagger all around them at the NYSC orientation camps. Some went to the camps with their ID cards and of course everyone wore the branded shirts on which the names of the graduands were inscribed. The bone of contention was the innocuous statement, “If you are not a student or alumnus of the better by far university, do yourself good by having one as a friend!” On the camps, graduates of the University told their colleagues of how they graduated within record time, how they would not rush home for their convocation and they showcased their state-of-the-art certificates immune to forgery. Then, they displayed their transcripts to graduates of other universities who might not even see their certificates in the next five years. So, they started to attract envy and bashing on social media by those who wished they were like them! At the conference, even presentations were not complete without some reference to the University and Mr Kehinde Olalusi, that vibrant young lecturer, dazzled the distinguished audience with his presentation, “Academic Mentoring and not Tormenting: A Discourse on Staff and Students of the Performing Arts Department, Unilorin”. It was simply superlative as another plus for the University that trained the don. Thumps up, Kenny! I think Unilorin, its students, alumni and staff have all the bragging rights because the University remains the one to beat in Nigeria, with accolades showered on it from all sides at all inter-university and international events. Nigeria today has 141 universities (40 Federal, 40 State and 61 Private) and 40 years after its establishment, the better by far University is the most recognisable. Little wonder it is the toast of all. The Unilorin's touch of excellence is everywhere and what is important is to keep the flag flying as the University is doing. I appreciate the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, for taking me along to participate in the conference and commend the Secretariat under the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oloyede, for a well-organised event. Two amazons of the University of Ilorin, the Director of the Centre for Research Develoment and In-house Training (CREDIT), Prof. Temidayo Oladiji, who administered the conference with élan, and the Director of the Linguistic Immersion Centre, Dr Elisabeth De Campos, who was the English-French translator, also added panache to one of the most successful conferences I have ever attended, where I also did my own little bit.
