‘Why Nigerians were named happiest people on earth’ (Contd. from front page) Addressing participants at the Conference, themed “Dance and Change in Democratic Nigeria Society”, the don said that “dance could be used to celebrate social culture, raise democratic awareness and break down racial barriers”. She disclosed that the team spirit in dancing is the same kind of team spirit that is needed to promote democracy, adding that the team spirit and skills are embedded in our traditional dances. Prof. Ajayi-Soyinka frowned at the situation whereby dance is used merely for entertainment and advised that dance must have meaning and message that promote the change we seek in the country. She said, “Dance in Nigeria is merely about entertainment, but entertainment should not be a mere show”, adding that “the creativity, skill and team spirit should be appreciated and promoted”. According to the Theatre Arts scholar, “Dance exists in space just as democracy exists in space,” stressing that “the democratic space must be well utilised through constructive engagement”. The Keynote Speaker noted that Nigerians have groaned long enough under dictatorship and corrupt rule, pointing out that dance is an art of the people, by the people and for the people that could bring relief to the nation. She stated that the existence of dance in different forms in the country today is a huge milestone, admitting that the dance practitioners are taking their place while the nation is giving due recognition to dance. Prof. Ajayi-Soyinka, who was also a guest at the just concluded 31st Convocation and 40th Anniversary of the University, said that gone were the days when dance professionals in the country were treated with contempt. She added that individuals' rights must be respected if democracy would grow while advocating

the use of social media, just like it was done during the Arab Spring, to call elected officials to order. “There are several things distracting the elected officials in the country, the dance group should remind them through dance what they were elected to do”, she said. In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), thanked the association for choosing the University of Ilorin as the Conference venue. Prof. Ambali, who spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya, congratulated members of ADSPON on the establishment of the Association, adding that dance was one of the reasons that made Nigerians to be named the happiest people on earth. The Vice-Chancellor said, “In spite of our challenges, we have not forgotten how to dance. We appreciate dance as a people and our Performing Arts students will be better off by the conference”. In his own address, the National President of ADSPON, Prof. Chris Ugolo, said that the Association was a child of circumstance that came into being because it has to be. Prof. Ugolo explained that the decision to float the Association came up at a conference in Calabar in 2012, “where the need for dance scholars became apparent”. The President submitted that the University of Ilorin is very strategic for dance scholars because of its rich curriculum. Prof. Ugolo said that dance recognises and registers chance, noting that the association hopes to collaborate with culture institutions in the country to promote dance scholarship. He disclosed that the second edition of the association's journal would be presented during the Conference.

Unilorin ASUU to raise fund for IDPs By Mustafa Abubakar

M

embers of the University of Ilorin Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have pledged to donate one per cent of their November 2015 salaries to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North eastern part of the country, as part of the Union's humanitarian assistance. The Union's Chairman, Dr. A. A. Adeoye, disclosed this last Tuesday (October 27, 2015) in a chat with Unilorin Bulletin after the Union's Congress held at the Basement of the University Auditorium. Dr. Adeoye , who recalled that in 2011, the Union members had donated one per cent of their salaries to the victims of Haiti earthquake, said, “Unilorin ASUU members are merciful set of people who felt that their impact should be felt not only in the academic settings but also by those in need.” The Chairman further disclosed that the Union had recently completed the 14-Lock up shops with major facilities for the use of business-minded people in the community. He expressed his happiness over the 2014 professorial appointments and the just concluded 2015 promotion exercise, which he said was a good initiative in the right direction. He then urged the University management to continue to make members of the community to feel the better by far status. At the Congress, which drew many members of the union including founding members, a special interactive forum was held for newly employed lecturers where issues of interest to the academics and their impact on the University were discussed. Addressing members during the special interactive forum, the Chairman, in his speech, entitled “You cannot Walk alone in the Lecturing Profession”, charged the newly employed members of ASUU to see themselves as intellectual assets, a brand that must be positively creative, innovative and relentlessly proactive and to manage their time very well. Dr. Adeoye said, “As a newly recruited member of ASUU, please note that you are an intellectual asset. Therefore, manage your time very well, and move beyond the zero sum game of the nostalgia of nobody but of zero to hero. Although you are a proto-world in gestation, try to discover your new world in a galaxy. Certainly, the profession of lecturing is a noble one. You must, however, cross the border of uncertainty, halfeducation and ego tripping, to a new world in which you will return with new understanding. Note also that everybody will lick your hand of success, and like an abandoned leper, they will run away from your hand of failure. To succeed, rise and break through the limitations of your experience and essence to redefine your

humanity”. The ASUU Chairman further admonished the new lecturers, “Let service and hard-work rule your world as you ultimately re-brand yourself. Be intellectually current and don't suffer from the poverty of the mind. Avoid dancing in a circle so as not to be caught in an unethical act of plagiarism. A few “self-appointed jurists” across the Faculties will provoke you deliberately, and the “small talk” that you are not their anointed candidate should not derail you. At a point in life, someone must be somebody's candidate. Since you are qualified for the position that you are currently occupying, do your work fearlessly.” He also warned them to be humble so as not to make enemies for themselves in the hierarchical lecturing profession, urging them to locate their selling points and be informed that there is a process that will lead to greatness. Dr. Adeoye disclosed further that at the University of Ilorin, the Union is moving on to sustain the system by breaking the barriers placed on the road. He, therefore, appealed to the supposedly aggrieved to kindly join the moving train by helping Unilorin, the pride of the Nigerian nation and the Union, the gatekeeper of that pride, to grow. Earlier in her address, the Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. (Mrs.) N.Y.S. Ijiaya, who represented the ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), lauded the Union on its quest to maintain the University's “better by far” status. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor said that the institution became the most subscribed University in Nigeria as a result of the commitment of the academic staff of the institution that are always on positive actions, which have resulted in making the University the best in the country. Prof.(Mrs.) Ijaiya charged the Union never to relent in its struggles to maintain the stability for which the University of Ilorin is known. The interactive section was attended by both old and new members of ASUU and presentations were made by various academics, among whom were the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi; the Director, Institute of Education, University of Ilorin, Prof. A.Y. Abdulkareem; the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. O. A. Omotesho; the immediate past Chairman of ASUU and former Dean of Law, University of Ilorin , Prof. Wahab Egbewole, and the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Albert Olayemi, among others.

Mr. Irewale, who is now an executive with Chevron, recalled that he was supervised by a doyen of Biochemistry, Prof. H.O.B. Oloyede, while Prof. A.T. Oladiji was his level adviser in his undergraduate days. In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. A. Sani, described Biochemistry as the foundation of life. Adeyemi makes case for higher admission quota for varsities By Idris Alooma and Tajudeen Babamale

O

ne of the pioneer staff members and retired Principal Assistant Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Chief Titus Agboola Adeyemi, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC), to allow universities in the country to admit as many candidates as they can in order to reduce the burden of admission seekers. Chief Adeyemi made the call penultimate Tuesday (October 20, 2015) while featuring on 'Oro to n lo', a popular Yoruba programme on Unilorin FM 89.3. The retired administrator, who served six former Vice-Chancellors consecutively as Confidential Secretary, observed that the current challenges being faced by thousands of admission seekers yearly can be drastically reduced if the government helps the institutions with adequate funding with which to improve the infrastructural development of the institutions. Chief Adeyemi, however, said that the University of Ilorin was tagged the centre for academic excellent

because of its stable and uninterrupted academic calendar, the visible discipline among its staff members and students, its violence-free status, its zero tolerance for cultism, the transparency of its past and present administrators and many more. Chief Adeyemi, who is also the Atunluse of OkeOdeland, Ifelodun Local Government area of Kwara Sate, congratulated the present administration of the University for maintaining the stability of the most subscribed institution in the country. He also acknowledged the past administrators of the University for setting a compact foundation that paved way for successful running by the present administration. While urging staff, students and well-wishers of the University to assist the management in prayers so as to get to the promised land, Chief Adeyemi noted that to be the best means a lot as other institutions would be working day and night to overthrow the leading horse.

Why we needed to celebrate

T

urning 40 is an opportunity to reflect. On milestone birthdays, people tend to take a long, hard look at their lives so far and look to the future. This is the essence of birthday celebration, particularly when one turns 40. Our Anniversary Lecturer, the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, emphasized this in the introduction of his lecture on Friday23rd October 2013. Justifiably, the questions of why we needed to celebrate our 40 years of existence might have bordered some minds. The ostentatious or quick emotional answer might just be that 40 years of age is not over the hill. It is not even the top of the hill, but, it is, indeed, all uphill. One can justify our celebration by telling the troubled minds that 'If you don't appreciate how remarkable it could be to climb to the zenith of a tall mountain, you could experiment with any sloppy top mountain around'. However, there are even myriads of better, clearer and much more concrete justifications. Over the last 40 years, Unilorin has grown in leaps and bounds. It has flown meteorically to a cruising altitude where it now spurts its perks, winners and heroes all over the land from far off, trailing the blaze for its contemporaries in Nigerian and global university system. It has grown from just a university college to a renowned citadel of learning that provides an enviable and fulsome or glowing reference point to the Nigerian university system. This is the main reason why we needed to celebrate. Unilorin has stridden fast and past its contemporaries. As a matter of fact, it has left its contemporaries far behind in its remarkable innovation, creativity and services to humanity. This is the main reason why we needed to celebrate. The Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria recently affirmed that the nation's tertiary institutions are increasingly decadent. The University System Study and Review conducted by the Academy, in conjunction with the National Universities Commission in 2012, identified various infractions embodying the Nigerian university system since the early 90s. Some of these infractions include examination malpractices, manipulation of internal examination processes, gratification and inducement to manipulate awards of marks and grades, sales of certificates, delay in the release of results, frequent strikes by staff and students, willful disruption of academic calendar, forceful sale of lecture notes, handouts and textbooks and non-release of certificates to graduates for many years after graduation, The study identified an horrendous or awful phenomenon called 'sorting' that defiles the academic integrity and sanctity of most Nigerian universities. As a two-way practice, sorting involves the students and lecturers who are academically corrupt. I believe it is against the backdrop of the above findings about Nigerian universities that the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, represented by his Deputy, said, in his goodwill message, on the occasion of our anniversary celebration, that Nigerian universities are bedeviled by academic corruption.

Providentially, Unilorin has gone through the hard process of change and renaissance that had revitalised, reenergised its system and cleaned it up of the filth that is tantamount to academic corruption characterising many universities in Nigeria today. This is the reason why we needed to celebrate. Ironically, Unilorin does not even have to wait till it attains 40 years like the paradoxical eagle in the story that Professor Omotesho, Dean of Student Affairs, captivatingly narrated during an interaction session organised last week by our visionary, reasonable and pragmatic ASUU headed by the sagacious and resilient unionist – Abdulrasheed Adeoye. The eagle in the story knew it could live up to 70 years, but it also knew it had to go through the hard process of plucking out its crooked beak and old heavy feathers in order for it to grow new sharp beak and light or invigorating feathers. Thanks to the visionary and purposefulness of the successive Vice-Chancellors that had one time or the other captained the sailing or flight of this University, our university had distinguished itself from the motley of pedestrian universities that stink to the heavens. From the first enthusiastic Principal/Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akinkungbe, to the present kindhearted, steadfast and aspiring Vice-Chancellor, Professor AbdualGaniyu Ambali, they have all contributed to the enviable and saintly status the university has attained in its 40 years. With strong determination, they have established a regime of good sense, which many concerned scholars are now advocating for the Nigerian university system, in order to improve academic integrity, excellence and growth in the system. This is the reason why we needed to celebrate. We are already far from the starting point where others are just about to start. We have already thought out of the box, and so we are distinct like a shining stellar in the space. This is the reason why we needed to celebrate. Forty years is a perfect age when creativity and common sense have been refined in one's life. As an institution, this is the age when we need to renew our resolve to do what we have been doing well in a much more dignified and committed manner. Celebration of our 40 years of existence has given us the opportunity to look back and give glory to God for what we have been able to achieve. However, it is equally an opportunity to look to the future with a more vigorous vision to attain a higher height. We need to continue to soar and soar like the rekindled eagle that has just been rejuvenated with new light feather and new sharp beak to conquer more preys. In our case, we need to conquer more grounds in the areas of cutting-edge research, innovations and advancements in enterprises or creativities. It is high time we designed a strategic 10 or 20 year plan with robust policies to implement the plan that will take us to the highest altitude from where we will not only seamlessly and effortlessly cruise, but from where we shall also shine, ignite and control the world like a colossus.
