T

he management of the University of Ilorin has concluded arrangements with a private company, Origin Group to build additional 2,500 room-hostel with 5,000 bed-space capacity to ease the acute shortage of hostel accommodation on campus. Speaking during a meeting with representatives of the company in his office last Monday (December 21, 2015), the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), said that the idea of engaging private developers was principally to move a larger percentage of the students into the campus. Prof. Ambali explained that the University could only effectively and efficiently instill moral and academic discipline in its students if the students are within the confines of the campus. He maintained that Unilorin gives a priority attention to sound and qualitative education so that its students would be found worthy both in learning and character. The Vice-Chancellor added that this informed the University's plan to build another set of modern hostel accommodation under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement in the interest of the students. Prof. Ambali explained that the BOT arrangement was in line with the Federal Government's

standing rules that stipulate that developers can build, operate and transfer the ownership of the building to the University authority after 21 years of operation. The Vice-Chancellor, therefore, advised the management of Origin Group to be strategic in its approach and come up with standard structures that would stand the test of time. He urged the company not to compromise standard and endeavour to ensure that the project is completed and ready for use by September next year to enable students make use of the structure upon their resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session in October next year. In his comment, the Chief Executive Officer of Origin Group, Chief S. J. Samuel, explained that the cardinal objective of his company was identifying and solving problems in all aspects of human endeavours. He added that the company had decided to address the accommodation deficit at the University of Ilorin with the provision of 2,500 rooms with 5,000 bed spaces capacity. Chief Samuel disclosed that work would begin on the project by March next year and gave assurance that the project would be completed in September next year as requested by the school management.

Store your toothbrush in hygienic places Store your brush strategically: Not only brushing but also keeping the toothbrush germ free after use is equally important. After using rinse it thoroughly, leaving no paste or debris left and store it upright in an open holder. Keeping it away from other brushes and sink or toilet area will prevent the chances of cross infection.

How clever dad tricked his children to visit home for Christmas A man in Nigeria called his son in South Africa last week and said: “I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Dad, what are you talking about?'” the son screamed. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the father said. “We’re sick of each other and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in USA and tell her.” Frantically, the son called his sister, who exploded on the phone. “Like hell they’re getting divorced,” she shouted, “I’ll take care of this.” She called home immediately and screamed at her father: “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” , she said and hung up. The old man hung up his phone and turned to his wife: “I told you, it’s done! They are coming home for Christmas!”

Morakinyo tasks parents on love for children By Tajudeen Babamale he Chairman of the Unilorin Lakeside Resort Management Committee, Prof. Akintade Morakinyo, has advised parents and guardians to use the Yuletide season to show love and care to their children and wards. Prof. Merakinyo gave this advice in a chart with Unilorin Bulletin penultimate Saturday (December 19, 2015) during the 2015 End of the Year Children Fiesta held at the Unilorin Lakeside, University of Ilorin. The Professor of Plant Biology, who said that children are the most precious gift from God, however, observed that parents and guardians need to spend more time with their children because it is what they will remember in the future. He said, “The best that parents can give to their children is happiness during celebrations because that is what they will live to remember when they grow up. The only way children can be endeared to parents is for them to have good time with their parents during celebrations, taking them out, buying clothes for them and many other

lovely ways that is capable of making them happy”. Prof. Morakinyo who expressed appreciation to the management of the University of Ilorin for its interest in the Lakeside project, however, implored the authority not to give up in funding because a lot still need to be done to develop the resort to international standard where people from every part of the world can come to relax. The Children Fiesta witnessed large turnout of children from various schools in Ilorin and its environs. Highlights of the event include quiz competition, dance competition cutting of cake horse riding and canoe riding, among others. People and events that made Unilorin tick in 2015

I

t is time for stock-taking! At this twilight of the Year 2015 and the dawn of Year 2016, it's time to cast our minds back into the last 365 days. Time to review some of the landmark events that have defined our status as the nation's Number One University. And like the story of the proverbial dog meat that would remain incomplete until the pot used in cooking it is mentioned, our review will be incomplete if we don't match the landmarks with the “people behind the news”. So, naturally, the events and landmarks we will be talking about will be tied to the personalities that either initiated them or facilitated their attainments. Some of the events and landmarks include: the sustained leadership position of Unilorin among Nigerian universities; the excellent organisation of both the 31st Convocation and the 40th Anniversary; the innovative Registry seminar; the steady digitization of the University Library; the very innovative drone initiative; the excellent organisation of this year's post-UTME rd screening; the CCTV project; the successful hosting of the 3 U6 Conference; and the unrelenting physical development of the University campus. Prof. Ambali (Sustenance of excellence) All the achievements attributed to the University in 2015 could only be recorded with the excellent leadership and policy direction provided by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON). That the University of Ilorin has been able to sustain its pre-eminent position among Nigerian universities is largely due to Prof. Ambali's excellent visionary and inspirational leadership style. Prof. (Mrs.) Ijaiya (Unilorin @ 40 book) One of the major highlights of the 40th Anniversary was the presentation of the commemorative book: “Unilorin at 40: the Soaring Eagle”. The book, which was generally hailed as a worthy compendium, was produced by a Committee headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya, who is also its Editor-in-Chief. To be sure, the book will remain a formidable reference material for anybody who wants to know anything and everything about this great citadel of learning. Mr. Obafemi (The Registry Seminar) One of the innovative initiatives of the incumbent Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi, is the monthly Registry Seminar. He also introduced the monthly Office Technologists' Seminar for Secretaries. And it could be said with some degree of certainty that these twin seminar initiatives have really gone a long way in reinvigorating the University administrators, thereby ensuring better efficiency. Dr. Omoniyi (Library digitization) The University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi, has sustained the on-going digitization drive of the University Library, an initiative that will eventually make the Library accessible to users all over the world. No doubt, this will further enhance the global visibility of the University of Ilorin. Prof. Quadri (40th anniversary) The much talked-about success story of the University's

40th anniversary was mainly as a result of the excellent leadership direction provided by the Chairman of the organizing Committee, Prof. Y. A. Quadri. The energetic Professor of Islamic Studies, who I privately refer to as “The Encyclopaedia Unilorinana”, really proved his mettle with the excellent organisation of the anniversary events. Prof. Atteh (31st Convocation) For about five consecutive years now, Prof. Job Atteh has headed the Ceremonials Committee that is charged with the planning and organisation of our convocation ceremonies. And for five years, he has always made a wonderful success of the assignment. But the 31st Convocation this year was a head ahead of previous ones. Both in organisation and delivery, it was simply remarkable and it will continue to be the talk of the campus for some time to come. Prof. Ahmed (Post-UTME, CCTV project) The Computer Services and Information Technology Directorate (COMSIT) has, over the years, proved to be a very reliable unit in the University's strive towards technological advancement. Headed by Prof. Musa Ahmed, COMSIT has been largely credited with the excellent and hitch-free conduct of this year's Post-UTME screening. The Directorate is also putting measures in place to get the entire Unilorin campus covered by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) in a move that will seriously enhance campus security surveillance. Prof. AbdulKareem (Unilorin drones) One of the major attractions of the 31st Convocation/40th Anniversary was the showcasing of drones manufactured by a team of scientists coordinated by Prof. Sulayman AbdulKareem of the Department of Chemical Engineering. If fully developed, the drones could be used for general campus surveillance and especially for the monitoring of the conduct of examinations. Prof. (Mrs.) Oladiji (3rd U6 Conference) The general accolades that greeted the superb organisation of the 3rd International Conference of the U6 Consortium, hosted by the University of Ilorin early September 2015, gave the University another form of international endorsement. Delegates from the six U6 member-universities across five African countries were obviously satisfied and they couldn't hide their feelings. Kudos for the success should be given to the members of the Local Organising Committee, headed by Prof. (Mrs.) Temidayo Oladiji, who is also the Director, Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT). Engr. Adesiyun (Massive physical development) The Physical Planning Unit, under its Director, Engr. Ademola Adesiyun, has virtually turned the University campus to a virtual construction site. Faithfully carrying out the mandate of the University management, the Unit has meticulously supervised many projects such that the University records no abandoned project. It is on record that about 22 solid projects were commissioned during this year's convocation ceremony and many more are nearing completion.
