Ambali visits Aregbesola, Ooni of Ife The University's management team, which included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi; and the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi, was in Osun State to felicitate with the new Ooni on his recent appointment and installation as well as to thank the Governor for honoring the University's invitation to its recent 40th anniversary and 31st convocation ceremonies. Governor Aregbesola, who described the University of Ilorin as “the only public university in Nigeria that has escaped the customary breaks in academic calendar”, noted that “the University is doing very well”. He said, “When a student enters your school, the fear of not completing his/her education on time is totally eliminated”. Pointing out that “this is Unilorin's most important contribution to sustaining a credible academic environment in the country”, the Governor told the ViceChancellor, “We commend those who have developed this seamless strategy and we also commend those of you who are sustaining it”. The Governor also commended the University's “commitment to modernisation and knowledge tradition” with the distribution of i-Pad tablets to all its students. He said, “I am very much impressed by your adoption of the latest easy-to-carry-about and easy-to-use IT device”. Ogbeni Aregbesola further noted, “That you have introduced and made compulsory the acquisition of this modern IT device by your students is a feat that must be seriously commended by those who genuinely want our nation to be at par with the best practices all over the world”. The Governor also commended the University for its successful migration to STM 4, which is the latest technology in internet access, saying, “With this, the University has broken the digital divide between the developed and developing world and I am enthused by your leap in that direction.” The Governor also expressed happiness that indigenes of Osun State constitute a substantial percentage of the staff and student population of the University. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor had congratulated the Governor on his re-election for a second term in office, saying this was a clear evidence of the people's confidence in him. Prof. Ambali disclosed that about 1, 400 of the newly admitted students of the institution are indigenes of Osun State. Pointing out that the state is also well represented on the University's staff list, he said, “In fact, one of my Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Olatunji, is a proud son of Osun State.” The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged Governor Aregbesola's contributions to educational development, especially the “Opon Imo” (i-Pad) initiative for secondary school students in the state. Prof. Ambali then reeled out some of the achievements of the University, which include the one-

student-one-iPad initiative; the upgrade of the University's classrooms to be IT compliant; upgrading of the internet connectivity on campus with the recent migration from STM 1 to STM 4; the operation of a paperless Senate; and a massive development of sundry plantations for teaching and research and for raising the University's internally generated revenue (IGR) base. Earlier at the Enuwa Palace of the Ooni of Ife, the royal father had commended the love and unity among the staff of the University of Ilorin, saying this was responsible for the stable academic calendar being enjoyed by the institution. Oba Ogunwusi said, “I see love from Ife spreading to Ilorin and among University of Ilorin staff. You are working as a family and your oneness is the reason behind your progress" . While thanking the Vice-Chancellor and the management team for the visit, Oba Ogunwusi promised to support the University of Ilorin in the area of the provision of hostel accomodation for the students. The royal father said,"I am in discussion on the accommodation problem. I am deeply concerned about the need and I will work with you". He described Ife as a land of love, stressing that it is the love that makes descendants of the town to be playing critical role in the development of the University of Ilorin. Oba Ogunwusi added that the Yorubas are a people blessed with rich tradition and culture. He thanked God for the wave of Unity among the Yoruba people, describing this as "a good development". In a show of his commitment to the provision of adequate hostel accommodation for students of the University of Ilorin, Oba Ogunwusi introduced one of his foreign friends, Mr. Laresh, an Indian and Managing Director of ML Construction Company to theViceChancellor and his team. ML is a leading supplier of building materials in Nigeria. In his own address, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the royal father on his ascension to the throne of his forefathers, praying that God will help him to achieve all his good plans for the Kingdom. Prof. Ambali explained that the purpose of the visit was to rejoice with the king on his recent installation, adding that it was also to show that the University of Ilorin greatly cherishes the monarch. "We cannot talk about University of Ilorin without talking about the language we speak. We appreciate you and we want you to continue to think of Ilorin as one of your brothers in diaspora”, Prof. Ambali submitted. Other top officials of the University on the ViceChancellor's entourage included the Deputy Bursar, Mr. Munirudeen Dere; the Director of the Advancement Centre, Dr. Jeleel Ojuade; the Deputy Director of the Advancement Centre, Dr. Lateef Onireti; and the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun.

Don canvasses regular physical exercise (Contd. from front page)

At the well-attended Lecture, the don said, “Wellness is wealth, peace, harmony – in short 'Heaven on Earth'. Wellness requires a strong body and 'soul'. To achieve complete control and harmony between body and soul, needs a high level of health and fitness”. According to Prof. Talabi, “the body, which consists of atoms, molecules, tissues, organs and system, can be likened to the house/the vehicle, while the soul represents the tenant/the driver”. He said, “I regard the soul/spirit as the real man and the body as the vehicle with which it operates. Without the soul (driver) the body (vehicle) is useless and cannot function, and without the body, the soul is not functional on earth”. The Inaugural Lecturer, who is also the immediate past Director of Sports, University of Ilorin, pointed out that “the relationship between the body and the soul is central to the level of well-being”, adding that “any abnormality in the soul or body affects the performance of the other and also ultimately determines the level of well-being. For the man (body & soul) to function and be well integrated, exercise is very important”. Prof. Talabi explained that exercise allows individuals to function effectively for a very long time especially during old age when one mostly is expected to be accorded with respect, control, and dignity. The don, therefore, canvassed sports education at all levels, saying that such education must start from the home, through the primary, to the tertiary levels of education. He expressed hope that this would go a long way in providing individuals a life worthy of living. Prof. Talabi said that exercise is a strong platform to assuage the poor state of the nation's economy, infrastructure, medical systems and personnel, pointing out that regular exercises will create an effective way of reducing the pressure on the economy and health care delivery system. He affirmed that good health and fitness is a foundation for a quality day and life, just as he said that the benefit of good health and fitness if experienced by the rulers and the masses will lead to economic boom for the individual and the nation. Prof. Talabi, who stated further that the slogan “Sports for all” should be encouraged at all levels of government as a means of national man-power development, pointed out that the World Economic Forum 2002 declared that only the fit and healthy people can provide a strong foundation for economic developments. He urged the management of the University of

4

Ilorin to initiate physical activity courses for all levels of students as a pre-requisite for graduation, adding that a simple “walk for life” programme at every level will raise the general status of students and better prepare them for future challenges. Prof. Talabi, who represented the University of Ibadan in Table Tennis at NUGA and WAUG games between 1970 and 1973, and later became the National Champion in Squash game between 1993 and 1995, also advocated the introduction of a course that will involve a walk to the gate and back, once a week, for all students of the University of Ilorin. He disclosed that he had been an exponent of this philosophy for long, adding, “Since I started practicing this philosophy, I have reduced to the barest minimum my use of any form of medicine, I have reduced my visit to hospitals to about one in five years and I am always loaded with energy and have never felt tired before going to bed, in the last 10 years.” The don said that “physical activity is the best medicine and more importantly it is easy to use, not expensive, cost effective, always available at any place and at all times, and can prevent almost all diseases, and can cure many ailments”. He advised all and sundry to “develop positive attitude towards regular exercise, proper nutrition, regular breathing, and regular intakes of copious amount of water”. According to Prof. Talabi, “Exercise scientists are unanimous that there is a difference between a person's chronological and physiological age. That is, a person can be 65years of age and yet have a physiological age of 45, while another one can be 35 years of age and look like an 80 year old person based on the person's fitness and health status”. He pointed out that a person can control his physiological age by a regular physical fitness programme, among others. He explained that a fit person enjoys better health and that in turn guarantees better wellness, as “he has the tendency of facing circumstances better and enjoying his life to the utmost without undue stress”. While quoting Prof. L. Emiola to buttress his point, the Inaugural Lecturer affirmed that “even if exercise does not add years to your life, it will definitely add life to your years”, adding that “you can never have 'paradise on earth' if you do not have peace of mind and you cannot have peace of mind if you do not enjoy superlative wellness”. Prof. Talabi suggested further that all students in

VC hails Unilorin students, as The Stewardship newspaper debuts By Olusegun Mokuolu

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has commended the students of the University for contributing to its development through positive thinking and action. Prof. Ambali, who gave the commendation in his office last Wednesday (January 20, 2016) while launching The Stewardship, a monthly newspaper initiated by the current Students' Union leadership led by Comrade Alao Idris, described it as a landmark achievement. The Vice-Chancellor expressed happiness that the students have transformed from being columnists with national dailies to producers of their own newspaper, noting that the development is the first of its kind in the University. Prof. Ambali told the students, “While students in other tertiary institutions are engaging in destructive activities, you are contributing to the development of the University through positive thinking and action”. Commending the Students' Union leaders for creating an environment that allows their colleagues to get the best out of their schooling, the Vice-Chancellor said, “I am moved by this achievement. People will continue to remember you for it. You did not request for money to do this and that shows that you are prudent, focused, accountable and ready to be saddled with responsibilities”. Prof. Ambali pointed out that the students' gesture would definitely go into their curriculum vitae,

adding that “this is a good entrepreneurial experience that will serve as a stepping stone onto greater things for you”. Describing the Students' Union leaders as a group to reckon with, the Vice-Chancellor admonished them to remain focused and not allow the newspaper to be hijacked for negative propaganda. He stressed that the purpose for establishing the Students' Union newspaper should be jealously guarded. Also on the occasion, members of the newly elected executive council members of the Kwara State Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) were presented to the Vice-Chancellor. Addressing the new JCC Executive Council members, led by a student of the University, Comrade Tajudeen Habeeb, the Vice-Chancellor tasked the students' body to emulate the students of the University of Ilorin. Prof. Ambali charged NANS to be skilled, disciplined and shy away from negative actions. “Create a good image for your universities”, he told them, adding that the good image of their universities would positively impact on their certificates. Earlier, the University of Ilorin Students' Union President, Comrade Idris Alao, explained that the students' newspaper was named after a weekly radio programme on Unilorin 89.3 FM radio, “The Stewardship”, also initiated by the Students' Union.

Ambali wins ‘Newswatch CEO of the Year’ award Other winners of the Newswatch Persons of the Year Award are the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, who has been named the “Overall Person of the Year”; the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, “Overall CEO of the Year”; the CEO of Channels Television, Mr. John Momoh, “CEO of the Year (Private Sector)”; the Director-General of the National Teachers' Institute, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, “Director-General of the Year”; the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, “Best New Governor”; and the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shettima, “Best Returned Governor”. In the letter of award dated January 4, 2016 and sent to the Vice-Chancellor, the Managing Director of the Newswatch magazine said, “I have the honour to inform you that our Editorial Board, Newswatch readers and our Newswatch Person of the Year 2015 Panel have adjudged you the winner of the NEWSWATCH PERSON OF THE YEAR award in the CEO OF THE YEAR (PUBLIC SECTOR) CATEGORY.” The award letter, a copy of which was made available to Unilorin Bulletin, further told Prof. Ambali, “This is on account of your tremendous achievements as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin. We note your innovative leadership and best practices within the

University as attested to by international rankings of the University of Ilorin as among the best in Nigeria in the past few years. “Locally, the University has become the leaders in research. Strike actions are anathema at Unilorin. It is the most sought after University in Nigeria by UTME candidates. Staff are happy, students are joyful. We congratulate sir, as these are no mean achievements”, the magazine management said. According to Newswatch, the nation's oldest news magazine founded in 1985, the Person of the Year Award was instituted yearly “to encourage leaders that are doing well”, adding that “the Awards were to recognise and reward persons and institutions in the public and private sectors who made positive impact on corporate and societal governance last year”. The magazine's management explained further that record of performance of each of the winners was the yardstick for the awards. It added that media awards, besides encouraging others to emulate the winners, were effective measures to prevent further degeneration of values in the society. Last year, 15 persons won the awards. The magazine's Editorial Board, however, disclosed that “only six distinguished leaders will be decorated for 2015 because we couldn't find those who meet the criteria for winning in the other categories.”

School of Preliminary Studies to extend admission application period By Opeyemi Oyetunde

T

he new Director of the School of Preliminary Studies, University of Ilorin, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi, has disclosed that the school is considering the extension of the application period for admission to give opportunity to more candidates to be admitted for the remedial programmes for this 2015/2016 academic session. Prof. Akanbi, who disclosed this last Tuesday (January 19, 2016) while featuring on 'Oro t'onlo', a popular Yoruba current affairs programme on Unilorin 89.3 FM, said that the idea was to give those candidates that could not make the registration before the January 10 deadline an opportunity to be considered for the programme. Prof. Akanbi explained that the School of Preliminary Studies is a platform that creates an avenue for candidates to be admitted into the University of Ilorin, especially those students within the University catchment areas and those from educational

disadvantaged states. He added that the remedial programme is a stepping stone for students to achieve their dream of having University education, adding that remedial result has some advantages over the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), pointing out that the UTME is like a recharge card that cannot be loaded twice while the remedial result can be used twice by the candidate. The Director warned applicants into the preliminary programme of the institution that admission is strictly for the qualified candidates. He also noted that admission of any kind is not for sale at the University of Ilorin. Prof. Akanbi advised parents to always monitor the activities of their wards, charging students to always be focused in their education and avoid all anti-social vices.

Encomiums, as Computer Science fetes past heads By Mubarak Oladosu

T

he Head of the Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin, Prof. B.A. Oluwade, has commended the past heads of the Department, especially its founding father, Prof. J. A. Gbadeyan, saying that they laid the solid foundation on which current achievements are being built. Prof. Oluwade, who gave this commendation last Wednesday (January 20, 2016) at the New Year gettogether for staff members of the Department and their friends, noted that the Department has risen from a humble beginning under the Department of Mathematics to become an autonomous department that now admits students for Masters, M.Phil and Ph. D degrees. The don, who noted that Computer Science is about imputing data, processing it and getting an output, said that the get-together was similar as it was organised to look at the past, assess it in order to create an even brighter future in a non-formal interactive setting. In his tribute to the pioneer Head of the Department and current Dean of Communication and Information Science (CIS), Prof J. S. Sadiku, Dr. A. O. Ameen noted that Prof. Sadiku is a thorough administrator, who mentored his younger colleagues in many ways including administrative writing. Similarly, a student representative, Comrade Idris, paid tribute to another past Head of the Department, Dr P. B Shola, who he described as a mentor and motivator who impacts on the life of his students. In her tribute to the third honoree, Dr. R.G. Jimoh, who is the immediate past Head of the Department, Dr. (Mrs.) Abikoye, recalled she was Dr. Jimoh's classmate and described him as a young and intelligent goal-getter who does not believe that anything is impossible. In his remarks, the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Dr. L.A. Azeez, expressed his pleasant surprise at the many positive strides and milestones achieved by the Department of Computer Science over the years. Dr. Azeez noted that while unhealthy rivalry

characterises many academic departments, the departments in the Faculty of CIS look up to Computer Science because of the cooperation in the Department. He noted that Prof. Sadiku extends such cooperation to the Faculty as he bails-out to the Faculty from time to time when it is in financial distress. While responding to the tributes, Prof. Sadiku expressed his gratitude for the honour, saying that he did not expect such a big event. Prof. Sadiku recalled that the Department started on a rough note in 2004 because of inadequate resources, adding that it is God who deserved the glory while everyone else deserves appreciation for their sacrifices and cooperation. He underscored the invaluable role played by Prof. Gbadeyan towards carving out of the Department from the Department of Mathematics. In his own response, Dr. Jimoh noted that the system has a way of eventually rewarding all the efforts and sacrifices made as he appreciated his colleagues and superiors for their contributions to the success of his tenure in office while he was the Head of the Department. On his part, Prof. Gbadeyan disclosed that God had done many good things in his life and that the occasion was one of them. He recalled the undergraduate days of the likes of Dr. (Mrs.) Abikoye and Dr. Jimoh, noting that their giant strides made him a fulfilled academic. The doyen of Mathematics noted that at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he trained, there was a Department of Computer Science under the Faculty of Mathematics and that inspired him and Professors OluMichael and Ibeajugba to start the Computer Science programme in the Department of Mathematics. The event was attended by the Sub-Dean of Postgraduate School, Dr A. Isa; the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr.(Mrs.) S.S. Abdulbaqi; Dr. (Mrs.) M.A. Mabayoje, Dr. A. O. Babatunde, Mrs. Oyekunle and a host of other distinguished personalities.

Dr.L.A.Azeez

Letter to our students

I

t is with great pleasure and respect I write this letter to all the students of the University of Ilorin, the better by far University. At the outset, I must disclose that I am motivated to send this missive of encouragement to you by my unalloyed love for you. I also need to let you know at the outset that our University cannot exist outside your existence. Our corporate existence as well as our corporate real or mirror image is flimsy or worthless without your existence. The purpose for which the University is existing and for which the academic and non-academic staff members of the University are existing is for your sake. I imagine with great fear the fate of the staff without you. So, you are the main reason for which we wake up in the morning and rush onto the campus. The campus 'bubbles' only when you are there, it becomes a serene but dull environment when you are not there. Let me even tell you a secret: some of us cannot live happily without seeing you, without standing before you pouring out on you what we think we know better than you. We spend most of our times with you, and thus, we get the most enduring joy from you. Importantly, I want to let you know that this University could not have been what it is today without you and your predecessors. We claim justifiably or deservedly to be the better by far University on the basis of our performances on all the indices of great academic institutions- teaching, research and community services. Our profile on all the tripartite mandates for which universities exist is enviably intimidating. We do not just brag or hype our performances; the concrete evidence and confirmation of our claims are manifested in the stability of our academic calendar, in the quality of teaching we give you and in the level of discipline we instill in you. Our motto - ProbitasDoctrine- is the demonstration of our objective of baking you thoroughly to become a paragon of both learning and character. The implementation of the strategies to achieve this objective has over the years culminated into our distinctive image and sobriquet of better by far. Our commitment to the objective over the years has made you all being very boastful of us as well as your alma mater. You have heard the kind of respect and enviable flattering your predecessors who had graduated got at NYSC camps. You have heard on several occasions how your seniors, who had left us, are making waves in everything they do. So, it is gratifying and prideful to be a student and alumnus of the University of Ilorin. It is undeniable that you go through a lot of inevitable hassles at the University of Ilorin. It is acknowledged that many of you trekked to town many times when transportation was chaotic. But I need to let you know that the management is also pained for seeing you going through this kind of stress. Most

times when the Vice Chancellor drove past you on the stretch of road to town, he often miserably wished he could jump down from his car to join you in the involuntary exercise. Because he is deeply embarrassed and distressed for seeing you going through all these difficulties, he is making frantic efforts to make life easier and much more comfortable for you. There are many strategies already in the pipeline that are meant to alleviate the hectic life you have to endure for your success. With all the efforts planned to make your lives easier and better, I believe you will be better assets for the University's glory and growth. There is no doubt that the public opinion about you is commendable and favourable. You are known to be well-behaved, well-dressed and serious-minded. Many times I have got visitors, including those from outside Ilorin, who passed good complimentary notes about you. They had told me several times that, from their observation, you are just great and amazing as students- better by far than the students in many other universities. Although outsiders assert that you are good (wellbehaved, well-dressed, disciplined and serious-minded), many of us, the insiders, know that you are not yet as good as the University want you to be. Many insiders, both the academic and non-academic members of staff, note that your reverence for elders is surprisingly low. They do not want you to be unnecessarily cringing and subservient to your lecturers and other staff members of the University, but they want you to uphold and manifest the good culture or value of respect for elders at the highest order because the value is the core of the moral excellence of Omoluabi the University is trying to build in you. Many of them have noticed that you don't have the culture of recoiling for respect, and not for fear, when you see them on the same line with you at banks and parks. Instead, you push them, provoke them, underrate/relegate them and pretend as if you don't see them while they are struggling with you to get a cab or to use ATMs. On the staircases too, you struggle with them and chest then out of the way for you to scramble past them, without any iota of respect for their position or roles as the people that live their lives for you. This, although, is a small frailty of morality, I don't want you to ignore it. Although nobody could be perfect in morality, I still believe that this small minus in your habits could rob off a large chunk from the great glory and image of the University. I want you to be complete in learning and character because it is only your completeness that can make the University to continuously flourish in its glory and greatness. God bless you. God bless the University of Ilorin. Sincerely Yours.
