‘Unilorin equiping students with entrepreneurial skills’ Prof. Ambali was honoured along with the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed; the ViceChancellor of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malate, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah; the ViceChancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Prof. Ibrahim Taofeek; the Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu; and the Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Dr. Muftau Olatinwo. Receiving the Award, Prof. Ambali, who expressed his appreciation to the Institute, pledged his continued support for the Institute in its effort to drive marketing programmes in institutions of higher learning to their proper destinations. Earlier in his address at the Institute’s Annual Conference held at the University Main Auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor had said that the cardinal objective of the management of the University is to equip the students with entrepreneurial skills that will enable them become employers of labour rather than job seekers after their graduation. In the address, entitled “Zero to Hero”, Prof. Ambali commended the leadership of the NIMN for convening a conference mainly to bring students together with a view to bridging the gap between theory and practice. He then advised the students to see the conference as a golden opportunity to turn their dreams of life to reality. He disclosed that the essential roles of marketing in nation building informed the decision of the University of Ilorin to establish the Department of Marketing two years ago.

In his speech, the National President of the Institute, Mr. AbdulGaniyu Koledoye, described marketing as a universal profession that is needed in all human endeavours. Also in his welcome address, the Kwara State Branch Chairman of NIMN, Alhaji J. A. B. Bello, challenged students of Marketing to do their best in the development of the Institute. The Guest Speaker at the Conference, who is the Head of the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Prof. S. O. Otokiti, charged the three tiers of government in the country to pay adequate attention to promoting exports of the products of agro- industries in their future export policy. In his paper, entitled “Developmental Marketing of Non-Traditional Items in Nigeria: The Marketing Drama (The Case Study of Traditional and Nontraditional sector)”,Prof. Otokiti described the Nigeria’s marketing situation as slow, saying that “for Nigeria to be globally competitive, companies and marketers in the country will have to leap from cost to innovation, shun its conventional thinking, and develop some non-traditional products, services and markets”. He said, “Nigeria fell short of appropriate development framework through frequent change of policies, lack of clear strategic marketing development vision and mission, serious commitment to marketing policy implementation cum evaluation and control and inadequate operations at non-traditional non- business areas.”

Globacom official spells out benefits of ‘Unilorin CUG’ (Contd. from front page) Prof. Ijaiya, who commended the company for erecting a new base station to complement the existing one, enjoined the telecommunication service provider to continue to improve on its services. She said, “With that, we are more comfortable with this offer you are bringing”. She then assured the company that the University management would encourage students and staff members to key into the Unilorin CUG package, while urging Globacom to “try as much as possible to improve on your services to make it worth our while and once we have that confidence in your services, you can be sure that this MoU will be an active one”. Highlighting the benefits of the product earlier, Globacom’s Head of Public Sector Sales in Kwara State, Mr. Semiu Ishola, explained that subscribers within the Unilorin Closed User Group (CUG), on activation, would enjoy free 24-hour calls, irrespective of the location, eliminating day and night, call-conferencing, guaranteed ease of payment and serialised numbering. According to him, subscribers on the platform could reduce the amount of their call charges by up to 40 percent because of the unparalleled benefits of the product in addition to “making education easy and better by far.” Mr. Ishola also explained that the CUG would appeal not only to the top management staff but also to staff, students as well as their family members, saying that “based on the efforts of the Director of the COMSIT and the University management, we have been able to

come to terms to reduce the monthly service rental to N600.00.” He said, “You can call everybody free of charge for 24 hours in a day and 30 days in a month and it is not restricted to a particular location”. In his own remarks, the Director, Computer Services and Information Technology Directorate (COMSIT), Prof. M. I. Ahmed, who described the CUG as a “glorified Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)”, said that the essence of the platform is to ensure that students, staff and their families alike communicate on a network at a more affordable rate. Prof. Ahmed said, “This is the cheapest CUG you can find in Nigeria”, adding that the University of Ilorin was partnering Globacom because the network is the best in Nigeria when it comes to bandwidth. He noted that the University had already paid for 5,000 SIM cards in order to kick start the process, adding that potential subscribers should come forward to the COMSIT and obtain theirs for N600.00 and get the SIM registered free of charge. The COMSIT Director pointed out that the network is an offshoot of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed few months ago between the University and Globacom, as well as the scaling up of the University’s bandwidth. He said, “In the next three weeks, the fibre will be drawn from Ajasse-Ipo to the NOC here and this will now give us the access to provide internet to all students and staff in this University”.

Unilorin Students' Union, LEAH Foundation collaborate to fight cancer By Fatima Abubakre

I

n a bid to ensure that more people, especially young women, are better informed on and join in the fight against cancer, the University of Ilorin Students’ Union, in collaboration with the LEAH Foundation, a pet project of the wife of the Governor of Kwara State, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, has organised the first Breast and Cervical Cancer Campaign on campus. The sensitisation programme, which provided free screening for breast and cervical cancer, took place at the University Auditorium last Tuesday, (November 17, 2015), was attended by the Kwara State First Lady, Mrs. Ahmed, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. W.B.R. Johnson, who represented, the ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho, resource persons, as well as staff and students of the institution. In her remarks, Mrs. Ahmed, whose Foundation is concerned with drawing the attention of women in Kwara State to the ravaging effect of breast and cervical cancer, narrated how three women, who had made significant impacts on her life, died of the ailment in the last four years. The Governor’s wife, who implored the young women to take advantage of the free screening exercise, further enjoined them to share what they have learnt with others around them, saying, “It is not about the fact that you have the money to spend; it is not how educated you are; it is about doing the right thing at the right time.” Mrs. Ahmed told the audience, “If you have seen a woman suffer from confirmed cancer, you will not pray such a death, not even for your enemy. Sisters, women, daughters, mothers, present here this afternoon, this is the time for us all to come together and fight the scourge that is bent on killing us.” Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), represented by Prof. Johnson, commended the Students’ Union Executive Committee for the initiative of putting forward a health-related discourse especially with the growing population of the female folks in tertiary institutions. He said, “Getting the girl child increasingly educated on matters that border on their health either on themselves or their children is like teaching the entire nation and it is one of the fundamental steps in the child survival strategy of this nation and indeed the world.” The Vice-Chancellor’s representative, who decried the alarming statistics of cancer in Nigeria, described cervical cancer as a “silent killer of women”. Enjoining the young ladies to go for regular screening, Prof. Johnson said, “90 percent of those who suffer from cervical cancer must have had the infection from the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)”. He, however, stressed that this could be prevented not only through vaccination but also through “screening at the

appropriate time.” In his own remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Omotesho, lauded the collaboration with the LEAH Foundation and commended Mrs. Ahmed for championing the welfare of women and children. “You are doing a very good job”, the Dean told the Governor’s wife, adding that “the Lord will continue to strengthen you and your Foundation will even live beyond you.” In his presentation, one of the Resource Persons and the Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Lagos, Dr. Femi Olaleye, explained that recent studies have shown that the number of cancer deaths in Nigeria was very high. The expert said that faith-based organisations, wealthy individuals and corporate organisations have a crucial role to play in raising people’s awareness on cancer screening, especially at the grassroots levels. He gave a logical guide on how to conduct a breast self examination as well as listing other ways through which the scourge can be avoided. Dr. Olaleye, who likened the death of women from cervical cancer to a travesty of justice and human rights of the women, noted that the fight against cancer is a collective responsibility which must be won, “because we can prevent it by simply asking them to do screening.” He maintained that “no one person can fight this war; you as students cannot do it alone, our Foundation cannot do it alone, the University cannot do it alone, we all need to do it together in order to win this war against cancer.” In the same vein, another Resource Person, Dr S. O. Agodirin, a Consultant and General Surgeon at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), disclosed that five to ten new cases of cancer were documented every week at the Hospital. He also highlighted some symptoms of cancer, stressing that early detection will help to promote better survival outcomes. Earlier in her welcome address, the VicePresident of the University of Ilorin Students’ Union, Miss Ummulkhaeri Imam-Lawal, said that the University is the first higher institution of learning in the country to host a campaign against breast and cervical cancer. She said, “As a Union that shoulders the responsibility of protecting the interest and welfare of our dear students, we found it pertinent to educate our members especially the females, on the severity of this deadly disease”. Expressing appreciation to the University management for the support garnered for the event, Miss Imam-Lawal also disclosed that the LEAH Cancer Club will be inaugurated in the University to further ensure the continuous realisation of the aims and objectives of the breast and cervical cancer awareness programme.

Unilorin to get befitting PG School building soon By Fatima Abubakre

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has reiterated his commitment to building a befitting Postgraduate School complex for the University, saying that it was long overdue. Prof. Ambali stated this last Wednesday (November 18, 2015) when he received members of the Board of the University of Ilorin Postgraduate School, led by the Dean, Prof. B. L. Yusuf, who visited him in his office. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the foundation has to be attractive, stable and strong enough to hold the rest of the Postgraduate School, which is the reason why more concentration has been devoted to undergraduate programmes over the years by the administration in order to preserve the quality of intakes. This, he observed, has made the International Association of Universities (IAU) to regard the University of Ilorin as a champion of postgraduate education in Africa. “There is no doubt that we are becoming more and more important not only nationally but at international level, so we have no choice than to support you to realise your dreams”, he added. Prof. Ambali, who also pointed out that the issue of funds was a major challenge, said the University management was working towards boosting its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), harnessing the resources and plantations on campus. “We shall continue to operate within our financial resources, just be rest assured that once our earnings increase, you will be part of the beneficiaries”, he said. The Vice-Chancellor, who endorsed the Board's request for a bus and a tricycle to ease the operations of the Postgraduate School, also noted that the Supervision Allowance is a priority. He explained, “That is our responsibility, because if some people have devoted their time and energy to supervise students, it is only fair that we don't allow their sweat to dry before we pay them.” He also pledged that the request for an upward review of the revolving fund set aside for academic operations within the PG School would also be looked into. In terms of admission, Prof. Ambali enjoined the Postgraduate School not to admit more students than they are able to cope with, in order not to lose our identity, quality and overburden our supervisors, saying, “I think you people have started on a good footing; you have set your targets and be rest assured that the management will support you to achieve your goals”. Earlier in his remarks, the Dean, Postgraduate School, Prof. Badmus Yusuf, who congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on the successful hosting of the 31st th Convocation and 40 Anniversary of the University,

6

stressed the need for a befitting Postgraduate School building. According to the Dean, the role of the Postgraduate School in the last 40 years of the University cannot be underestimated as it formed a major chapter in the movement of the University from glory to glory. Prof. Yusuf said, “Since I came on board almost four months ago, I have continued to maintain the standard that we met in the PG School, especially the continuous implementation of the Malete Declaration. We have continued to make efforts to forge ahead with the cooperation of the Board members and as a result, the Senate recently approved for us the BMAS, which will constitute the material for the prospectus for all higher degree students.” The don, who called for an increment in the revolving loan given to the Postgraduate School to N2 million from N1 million also stated that the Postgraduate Students' Logbook has been useful in tracking the progress of the students as well as monitoring the effectiveness of the supervisors. Prof. Yusuf said, “The Committee of Postgraduate Deans in Nigeria has always been commending the strides of the PG School here when they come to pay us a visit, they are always disappointed seeing us in the current building, which we occupy. When we go out, we are always hopeful that very soon we should be able to have a befitting building because of what we see even starting from the University of Ibadan here. This is why we want to appeal to you to give us a befitting new postgraduate building on a virgin land where we can have sufficient land mass for all that have in mind”. He noted that a committee set up for this purpose headed by Prof. Kolade Joseph had prepared a blueprint, which shall be forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor's Office, so that, “by the time we are doing the 2016 Convocation, it will be part of the projects that will be commissioned.” The Dean assured the Vice-Chancellor that “we will continue to do our very best; we are not going to relent in our efforts and we are not going to disappoint your expectations from the PG School.” Other members of the Board on the visit were the Secretary, Postgraduate School, Mrs. F.M. Olowoleni; Prof. Kolade Joseph; Dr. Issa, Bello, and Dr. Ajao. Joining the Vice-Chancellor to receive the Board members were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N.Y.S. Ijaiya; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr Joseph Omoniyi, and the Principal Assistant Registrar, Vice-Chancellor's Office, Mr. A. Sayuti.

Purposeful leadership

S

ome three weeks ago, the topic of discussion on Good Morning Nigeria, a public broadcasting programme on the Nigerian Television Authority, was the state of infrastructural facilities in Nigerian universities. The discussants on the programme included the former NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Peter Okebukola, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nssuka , the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, and the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The consensus opinion among the discussants on the programme was that there was an alarming putrefaction of infrastructural facilities in Nigerian public universities, particularly in the so called first generation universities. Viewing the programme on that good morning ironically gave me some depression about the rapid rate at which some early universities that used to be the pride of Nigerian have become the shadow of themselves as a result of the decay in their physique, psyche and purpose. I believe that the discussion on the programme that day would have even given older colleagues that watched the programme a greater feeling of nostalgia and despondency. This is because they saw it and enjoyed it when it was good in the Nigeria forerunner universities. Meanwhile, there was also an agreement among the discussants on the programme that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has been a veritable redeemer or liberator, so to say, of the crumbling facilities in the Nigerian universities. Perhaps, without the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, many Nigerian universities would have remained habitats suitable for rats rather being the genuine citadels of learning. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was established as an intervention agency under the TETFund ACT - Tertiary Education Trust Fund(Establishment, etc) Act, 2011- with the purpose of disbursing, managing and monitoring the education tax to public tertiary institutions in Nigeria in order to improve their physical infrastructure for teaching and learning, instructional material and equipment, research and publication and academic staff training and development, Ironically, even with the TETfund, many Nigerian universities remain, to say the least, glorified secondary schools. This, according to popular opinion, is the reason why we have got only one or two Nigerian universities that had emerged on the list of 200 highly ranked universities in the world. Of course, the University of Ilorin has distinguished itself over the years from the crop of the Nigerian universities that remain stagnant and decaying in their infrastructural developments. This is also the reason why it has been ranked severally as one of the best universities in the world. The simple secret of the distinction of the University of Ilorin lies in the purposeful leadership that has been shaping the destiny of the University over the years. Indeed, the purposeful leadership trait has been in its record high since the beginning of the reign of our present Vice-Chancellor, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali. Thus, the University has been meteorically and stupendously transformed. A manifestation of this transformation is the purposeful developments along the Bank Road. A drive along this road will amaze someone that has not visited the University in

the last one year. The infrastructural developments along this road are the evidence of the judicious application of TETFund money, which many other Vice-chancellors divert for trivial and purposeless projects. The Central Research Laboratory on this road is a magnificent symbol of our Vice-Chancellor purposeful leadership. Other facilities that the Vice-Chancellor purposefully and prudently spent TETFund and other donor's money to put in place, and which will ever remain his enduring legacies, include the Central Animal House for Research, Lecture Theater for Science, Department of Optometry and Vision Science Building. Engineering Workshop, NLG Engineering Research Center, 200 Capacity Agric Laboratory, 300 Lecture Hall for Management Science and Green House for the Faculty of Agriculture. Like I have said, all the aforementioned infrastructural facilities are part of what make a University worth its name. And, they are, indeed, symbolic manifestation of the trait of purposeful leadership of Professor Ambali. Purposeful Leadership is the act of transforming dreams to reality in a way that helps others. Purposeful Leaders are Givers. They are Servant leaders. These leaders had a purpose derived from an inner vision. They had belief and conviction in their vision. Their vision benefited others who were inspired and who enthusiastically followed the leaders. Purposeful leaders are agents of change; they influence the actions and lives of others by bringing about either a direct or indirect change to individuals or organizations and societies. According to Warren Bennis, purposeful leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. Purposeful leaders understand that nothing happens until they make it happen. So, “the very essence of leadership is its purpose. And the purpose of leadership is to accomplish a task. That is what leadership does-and what it does is more important than what it is or how it works (Colonel Dandridge M. Malone). Wade Mayfield identified four basic qualities of purposeful leadership, which apparently characterize the reign of our ViceChancellor. The qualities include leadership (worthy of people's admiration), candour (being able to confront problems head on with transparency), tenacity (the unquenchable and strong desire to win, to excel, to do your best) and execution (taking a plan and putting a wheel on it). So, purposeful leaders, like Prof Amabakli, think, inspire, mobilize and empower. And this is where the Physical Planning Unit and its diligent, sincere, unassuming and visionary Director come into the feat or uniqueness of infrastructural developments in our University. Without the equal purposefulness of Engr. Ademola Adesiyun, Unilorin would not have been a shining star in the galaxy of Nigerian universities. As he proposes and designs in his visionary dreams, he finds the solace of a Vice-Chancellor that mobilizes and empowers adequately for the purpose of excellence and altruism. What an excellent combination? I just hope they will use the compatibility of their purposefulness to give us students' hostel accommodation, more classrooms and lecture theaters- -like the one my Faculty will soon have. Hurray to our VC and his Director of Physical Planning.
