Ambali debunks ‘malicious’ press reports Describing the reports as “malicious, misleading and unfounded”, the Vice-Chancellor said that the only issue raised by some Committee members while reviewing the institution's 2015 budget performance was that some sections of the 2015 budget report lacked detailed analysis of certain expenditure. He said that he had immediately directed the University's Bursary Department to provide the required details, which had been promptly submitted to the lawmakers.

Prof. Ambali noted that during his subsequent visit to the National Assembly, when he drew the attention of some members of the Committee to the malicious reports, the lawmakers expressed surprise, as, according to them, “nothing like that happened during the budget defence session.” “They even asked us to bring the copies of those newspapers so that they would react to it officially,” he said. T h e Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r explained that the University was not the only institution ordered by the

lawmakers to provide further clarifications and details during the budget defence. “They said they needed details of some of the bills we submitted and we are not the only university that such clarifications were demanded from,” he noted. Prof. Amabli said that “ e v e r y b o d y, i n c l u d i n g t h e legislators, knows Unilorin for prudence and accountability. We have all the records. All we did was to ask our Bursary Department to provide the details.”

‘Unilorin e-library for upgrading’ (Contd. from front page ) The Vice-Chancellor assured the team that the e-library would be upgraded and updated soon to give the students access to latest books and journals. He explained further that at the University of Ilorin, Senate meetings are conducted paperless, thereby saving cost and improving efficiency. Thanking the accreditation team for helping the University to ensure that the practical aspect of engineering is put in place, the ViceChancellor said, “Thank you for identifying areas where we are doing well and areas that need improvement. We are number one with room for improvement because we were recently adjudged to have the best Engineering Faculty in the country”. Prof. Ambali noted that the University employed qualified personnel to ensure that there would be quality hands when the present crop of experts leave the scene, stressing, however, that the dwindling national income is affecting the recruitment of qualified lecturers. He seized the occasion to thank the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its massive s u p p o r t f o r t h e U n i v e r s i t y,

particularly in the field of Engineering, assuring the COREN team that all the engineering equipment would be installed and put to proper use. The Vice-Chancellor praised the Technologists in the University, describing them as “precious human resources in the University that are critical to the Faculty of Engineering”. He added that the management does not hesitate to approve staff development for the Technologists. Earlier, while presenting a summary report of the accreditation visit, the COREN accreditation team leader, Engr. B. M. Adisa, stated that the environment of the new Departments of Computer Engineering, Food and Bioprocess Engineering and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, is conducive for learning. Engr. Adisa commended the cordial relationship between lecturers and students at the University of Ilorin, saying that the University has achieved greatly in accessing intervention fund that has been judiciously spent. He also commended the Faculty of Engineering for its desire to meet international standards and expanding engineering knowledge

in different engineering fields in the University. Engr. Adisa, who tasked the University to ensure that its library is updated, also called for the prompt installation of the engineering equipment supplied to the University. Urging the University management to extend its capacity building efforts to the technical staff, the Accreditation Team leader suggested that the funds allocated to the Departments should be increased. Other members of the COREN accreditation team were, Engr. Bala Abdulkadir, Engr. Prof. I. I. Eneh, Engr. Prof. J. O. Akinyemi, Engr. Prof. S. O. Jekayinfa, Mrs. D. S. Asa, Mr. Abdullahi M. Jega and Mr. Mohammed A. Hadizat. The Vice-Chancellor was joined by the Deputy Registrar (Council), Mrs M. A. A. Oladosu; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. A. Omotesho; the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Y. A. Jimoh; and the Principal Assistant Registrar in the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Mr. A. Sayuti.

Obafemi tasks Registry staff to embrace change (Contd. from front page) Dr. Awosusi, who is also a former Chairman of the Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), pointed out that for administrators to function in the University of the future, there is the need for training and re-training on the technology that would drive the system in which they work. He noted that one area in which administrators need training is on how to overcome resistance to change. According to Dr. Awosusi, “The challenges facing administrators of the now and which will create panic if not embarrassment for them in the University of the future, include rapidity of innovation in ICT, emergence of new jobs, stability of tenure, training, performance management, outsourcing, customer restlessness, innovations in events management to mention a few.” He stressed that the administrators, who are deficient in the use of basic ICT tools such as M i c r o s o f t E x c e l , Wo r d a n d PowerPoint, would be shocked by the University of the future, submitting that universities may not have room for secretaries in the nearest future. The Guest Speaker opined that there are great prospects in the University of the future for administrators who could hone their attitudinal, technical and communication skills, stressing that those who would work on their attitude would rule the future. “Attitude to the customers of our universities and the stakeholders will determine our relevance in the days to come”, Dr. Awosusi said, adding that “those with great positive attitude to work and to the system will reap the rewards of hard work directly or indirectly”. While recalling that writing and university education started from Africa, Dr Awosusi cautioned the old generation universities in Nigeria against complacency as he predicted

4

that the new generation private universities will overtake them in the next 20 years if the current trend continues. The Guest Speaker also noted that while old generation universities in Nigeria live in a world of selfsatisfaction, the private universities are investing in training and retraining of all their staff on minute details of everyday life in the University system. He also observed that many African universities with fewer resources are doing better than Nigerian universities because they are investing more in their education system and therefore appealed to the Nigerian government to increase its funding of the Nigeria universities in order for them to compete favourably with their contemporaries across the globe. He frowned at the system in the universities that believes in the w o r t h o f a c a d e m i c qualification/publications and experience calculated in terms of chronological age rather than in terms of “knowing how to do it”, which, he said, is the focus of the industry and the focus of the future. Dr. Awosusi recommended that the 360 approach should be put to use for the promotion of administrators in the universities, explaining that the approach allows super-ordinates, customers, peers, subordinates to assess and determine administrator's suitability for promotion. Earlier in his opening address, the Chairman of the occasion and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), enjoined all members of the University staff to take advantage of the opportunities for training and retraining provided by the University administration to develop themselves and the system. In the address, entitled “Deliver the Goods”, Prof. Ambali, who was with all the other Principal

Officers of the University, stated that the lecture topic is a wake-up call to the University's administrators to realise the imperative of embracing change. He called on the staff of the University to work together to deliver the goods of higher learning that would make Nigeria better. According to the ViceChancellor, “Without administrators on whose neck the progress and development of the University rests, nothing concrete can be achieved”. He said, “If we do right things and we do things right, we shall overcome the challenges, lift our university system to a higher pedestal and deliver the goods of higher learning to humanity”. Welcoming guests to the programme, the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, who is also the Chief Host, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, explained that the annual Registry Lecture “marks the successful culmination of a long dream” and thanked the ViceChancellor who, he said, gave the encouragement and financial backing to host the programme. Mr. Obafemi explained that the objective of the lecture is to serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas on current trends in the administration of higher education institutions. The Registrar stated that the last one year in the University of Ilorin witnessed unprecedented advancement in staff training and human capital development as a large number of staff in the University attended various conferences, seminars and workshops. Mr. Obafemi described the administrator as the custodian of the University rules, regulations, precedents, traditions, ethics and culture, adding that he provides direction and guides management and group activities and actions so that the objectives of the University are attained.

Unilorin alumni body pledges more support for alma mater By Fatima Abubakre

T

he University of Ilorin Alumni Association has restated its commitment to the development of the University especially in the area of infrastructure and maintenance of standards. The National President of the Association, Dr. (Mrs.) Rhoda Olape Oduwaiye, who made this known in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin last Thursday (February 18, 2016), also highlighted forward-looking plans by the body for the alma mater in order to tackle the challenge of accommodation on campus. She disclosed that the alumni body would soon commence the building of another hostel block to ease the accommodation challenges facing the students on campus. “The demand is very high, students live off campus where they are not very comfortable. Most students love our hostel because of the standard and we want the students to feel at home even while they are in school. Our major focus is to help provide accommodation in our own small way for the students”, she said. According to Dr. Oduwaye, the Alumni Association had also written to the University for a piece

Dr. (Mrs.) Oduwaiye of land where it intends to build an Alumni Centre, which will house a secretariat office for the Association, a Conference hall, an entrepreneurship centre, a business centre and a guest inn. She further disclosed that the body is working towards having a befitting vehicle to ease the movement and operations of the secretariat this year. She said, “The University researcher's lodge is a beautiful piece but it is a little above the means of many people. We want ours to be within the means of the people, say like five thousand naira per night.

People who come for conferences and parents who come to visit their wards and children in the University don't have to go to town to get hotels. We plan on having entrepreneurship centre where students and people from outside can come and learn different vocations and trades like fashion designing, painting and so on.” While admitting that funding was a crucial matter in implementation of projects, she said, “It is a big project but I know that with the support of all Alumni members in Nigeria and abroad, we are going to achieve it”. “Our major resources for now are through membership fee, but we are putting in place other sources of generating income. For instance we want to put a proposal for farming and the proceeds are going to yield money and it will take just one year. We will start with plants (grains) that will yield within a year and sell. We have so many great and good spirited Alumni members who are all over the world and when we reach them and they know that we are very committed and we have a project at hand, they will definitely contribute to the project.”

Unilorin holds first Registry Lecture series (Contd. from page 4) According to the Registrar, the administrator is expected to possess cutting-edge competencies to interpret regulations and advise management properly in the day-today running of the University to be able to achieve success. He said, “Unless the administrator is knowledgeable, well versed in his job and skilled in problem-solving, he cannot offer any useful advice”. Mr. Obafemi said that administrators who want to remain relevant in their job must embrace change, concluding that “there is no longer place to hide as the society is

continually on the drive to excellence and only the administrators who are open and receptive to new ideas will come out triumphant and unscathed”. In her goodwill message, a former Registrar of the University of Ibadan, Chief (Mrs.) Mojisola Ladipo, said she was elated to see that the Registry of the Nigerian universities has come of age. The renowned administrator charged the Registry staff in Nigerian universities to improve on their service delivery and be part of the glorious education landscape that

awaits Nigeria. Among the Registrars of some universities in attendance were, Mr. M. S. Ayeerien, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Dr. Daniel A. Rotimi, Landmark University, Omu Aran; Dr. Kehinde A. Adekeye, Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Abuja; Mr. Omololu Adegbenro, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State; and Mr. Mathew Odunlade Ayoola, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

LINES

Man: My wife is too good. She can talk on any subject for hours. Friend: Mine is better, she does not even need a subject to talk about.

& Gum care, as integral as tooth care Don't neglect gums when it comes to taking care of your oral hygiene. Plaque gets accumulated not only in teeth but also in and around gums. Brush your teeth twice and rinse your mouth whenever you eat anything. Bleeding gums while brushing are indicative of infection. Brush around the gum margins with the help of an angled brush. Massage the gums tenderly with finger or soft tooth brush bristles.

A day with Oloyede

L

ast Thursday (February 18, 2016) will remain evergreen in the annals of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) as it was the day it held its 2016 Annual Lecture, delivered by our mercurial former ViceChancellor, Prof. Is-haq O. Oloyede (OFR). The venue was the auditorium of the fast-growing Kwara State University, under the transformational leadership of Prof. AbdulRasheed Na'Allah, an alumnus of the better by far University. Since I was opportune to serve in the Organising Committee of the 2012 NAL Lecture, hosted by the University and delivered by the late former ViceChancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Nur Alkali, I had assured myself that anytime I have the opportunity, I would join the NAL annual train. Not only the profundity of carefully selected topics, usually handled by outstanding lecturers, characterises NAL Annual Lectures, the vast array of academic irunmoles and intellectual iwins in the humanities that are seen there would not make one wish to miss such high-octane engagements. The 2016 lecture, entitled “Utilising Religion for National Integration and Development”, was as eyeopening as it was thought-provoking. There was no dull moment throughout the entire session as the tempo was heightened right from the beginning with the catalogue of textual evidence showing renewed anti-religious literature, which indicated that “this is not the best of times for religion”, as the lecturer put it. From Sam Harris' The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason to Richard Dawkins' The God of Delusion as well as Christopher Hitchen's God is Not Great: How Religions Poison Everything and Victor J. Stenger's God: The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows that God Does Not Exist, among others, we were told how religion is being viciously attacked even at the pseudo-intellectual terrain, a captivating antithesis for the subsequent thesis and synthesis of the discourse. However, despite the grim picture of unprecedented attacks on religion and its adherents, Prof. Oloyede, who is the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Inter-religious Council (NIREC), provided further evidence that religion will continue to dominate the lives of billions of people in the foreseeable future. As a matter of fact, he contended, the three epochs of life, birth, marriage and death, will always attract religious rites and practices. He then analysed with textual and video data how the religious are being manipulated by the irreligious to portray religion in bad light, despite the unanimity of opinions on the positivity of religious values. He especially condemned the systematic undermining of the study of

religion in Nigeria and decried a situation in which, at a time religious understanding is crucial, the policy makers have collapsed both Islamic Studies and Christian Religious Studies to mere topics in an unwieldy and omnibus subject called “Religion and Moral Values” at the three levels of Basic Education in Nigeria. Then, by illustrating and drawing attention to how religion can be used to promote national integration, advance character development, achieve economic benefits, deepen unity, establish justice and fairplay and generally enhance national development, Prof. Oloyede demonstrated, to the open-mouthed amazement of the electrified audience, how the politics and intrigues of just four countries account for the "religious" problems the world is facing. Besides, he emphasised how the values of religion are consistent with the values of good citizenship in terms of obedience to constituted authority, loyalty, kindness, honesty, justice, among others, while all forms of antisocial behaviour are inconsistent with religious teachings. "Armed robbery, cultism, gangsterism, prostitution, drug abuse, child abuse, human trafficking and drug trafficking are seriously condemned by religion," he stressed. That day with Prof. Oloyede on the podium was another opportunity of tapping from the native intelligence and intellectual repository of a man who symbolises the quality of education offered by the University of Ilorin as a foremost alumnus. Having seen it all, as Chairman of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU)/ Committee of Vice-Chancellors (CVC), Secretary General of the Association of West Africa Universities (AWAU), President of the Association of African Universities (AAU), and Board Member of both the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Association of Universities (IAU) at various times, the University of Ilorin can proudly assert anyday when all is said and done, the Oloyede phenomenon is its exclusive achievement. It was a day to remember. Congratulations to our new Professors! Though still subject to ratification, information emerged last week that the University of Ilorin has raised the bar further by promoting scores of academic staff to readership and professorial cadres. This is a very good development, a culture of rewarding excellence that the University should sustain. The Alma Mater congratulates all the newly promoted associate and full professors on their achievements while wishing them more wisdom and knowledge in the service of humanity!
