Ambali restates Unilorin’s commitment to tripartite mandate The Professor of Veterinary Medicine said that the University of Ilorin would not lose sight of its mandate as an ivory tower that was established mainly to perform the tripartite functions of teaching, research and community development. Prof. Ambali pointed out that the establishment of UREC was informed by the University's effort to realise the third leg of the mandate, which is community service, to contribute its quota towards the progress and development of the community within which the University is domiciled. According to him, “the University of Ilorin, having attained success in the first two legs (teaching and research), could not but direct its searchlights to areas where the lives of members of the University’s host

community and their living conditions would be enhanced”. Prof Ambali thanked God that the frantic efforts of the University to improve academic standard and community development as well as inculcating the right values and character in the students had caught the attention of some distinguished organisations and agencies in terms of support and assistance in all aspects of the University programmes. While saying that the University of Ilorin could achieve whatever goal it sets its minds upon, the ViceChancellor urged all staff and students not to rest on their oars but continue to keep the fire of their commitment and dedication burning so as to take the University higher and higher in the years ahead.

The Annual Report quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, as explaining that the scholarship award was “basically to reward hard work and to serve as morale booster for the recipients while it will further motivate and encourage other students to strive hard to attain that great height”. Prof. Ambali commended the University scholars and advised other students to attach seriousness to their studies for them to be recipients of the award in the 2015/2016 academic session. The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the University of Ilorin is known for the best and pledged that his leadership would continue to do everything humanly possible not only to sustain the feat but also to consolidate on the existing achievements.

Ambali gives kudos to CILS (Contd. from front page) The LASU Professor of Arabic Studies also urged Islamic scholars in the country to close ranks, noting that some current practices are inimical to the long-run interest of the group. Also speaking on the occasion, which included the presentation of the Centre's second Book of Readings, “Ilorin as a Beacon of Learning and Culture in West Africa”, the Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Olanrewaju Shagaya, said, “Ilorin is the Centre of Islamic learning in Nigeria”. According to the Zanna of Ilorin, Markaz in Agege was built by Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory apart from Ansarul Islam institutions of Sheikh Kamaldeen AlAdabiya and other Islamic institutions by other eminent Ilorin scholars. He noted that these have given birth to many modern Ulamas of note across Nigeria particularly in Ilorin and the entire South Western part of the country. Alhaji Shagaya said, “The early settlers of Ilorin would not have envisaged the magnitude of development of Islamic knowledge, understanding, and use of the Holy Quran by present day indigenes”. He, however, cautioned against the use of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet for extraneous purposes. He said, “My reservation and fear, however, are the fact that some of these modern Ulamas embark on some spiritual activities, which appear not to be in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah. By this, I mean the use of the Quran for other purposes rather than for protection and guidance as ordained by our Holy Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon Him)”. The Chairman further eulogised Ilorin indigenes, saying, “The present Ilorin has developed from the reign of Abdulsalam in 1823 through to the reign of the present Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness, Mai Martaba, Dr. th Ibrahim Zulukarnaini Gambari (CFR), the 11 Emir of Ilorin whose reign has ushered in multi-dimensional developments, witnessing peace and harmony”. In his own address, entitled “Brighter Future”, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), again corroborated earlier speakers, noting that, “it was not by accident that when the first university was to be established in Nigeria, Ilorin came naturally to the mind of the colonial masters because there was no better place for an institution of learning than a town of scholars. If not for lack of pipeborne water and good electricity, Ilorin would have

hosted the first university”. He pointed out that “today, the city hosts the largest university by land mass and the most desired institution by admission applicants in the country”. Prof. Ambali, who was represented on the occasion by one of the Coordinators at the Centre and Dean, University of Ilorin Postgraduate School, Prof. Badmus Olanrewaju Yusuf, listed several Islamic scholars from the city and credited them with the impacts that Ilorin today is making at the vanguard of both Islamic and western education. The Vice-Chancellor said, “With many scholars of Ilorin extraction now combining both Islamic and Western education and creating works across disciplines throughout the country and beyond, the city has a bright future as the lighthouse of knowledge it has historically been”. Speaking further, he said, “I use this medium to encourage Ilorin sons and daughters and Nigerians at large to continue to hold knowledge and learning in high esteem because education is the ticket to a bright future”. Prof. Ambali expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Centre for Ilorin Studies, congratulating both the pioneer Director and Chief Imam of the University, Prof A.G.A.S. Oladosu, for laying a solid foundation for the Centre and the current Director and Chief Imam of Auchi, Prof. Z.I. Oseni for sustaining the tempo. Earlier, the Director of the Centre, Prof Oseni, had listed several achievements of the Centre, which include publication and presentation of Public Lectures; hosting of conferences in 2013 and 2014; and the presentation of the Centre's Book of Readings in December 2013 among others. He asked the University and interested members of the audience to help build a bigger office complex for the Centre because of plans to display “Ilorin Icons”-an ongoing project aimed at profiling contributions of notable Ilorin indigenes to national development. The occasion was witnessed by many dignitaries, including the wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr (Mrs) H.T. Ambali; the Mogaji-Nda of Ilorin, Alhaji Soliu Mohammed who represented the Emir; the President of the Ilorin Emirates Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Abdulhamid Adi; the first Grand Khadi of Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, Justice Abdulkadir Orire (rtd) and the current Grand Khadi, Justice S.O. Mohammed; the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad and many more.

NUC okays Unilorin's Primary Education programme By Ishaq Babatunde

T

he National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the management of the University of Ilorin the go-ahead for its newly established Primary Education programme, having satisfied all necessary conditions needed for the successful take-off of the course. The NUC's nod came through its accreditation team that visited the University last Monday (December 14, 2015). Presenting her report at the end of the team's visit last Tuesday (December 15, 2015), the leader of the accreditation team, Prof. Julie Ibiam, commended the management of the University of Ilorin for putting in place all necessary requirements for the new programme. The accreditation team leader, who is a Professor of Childhood Education, Department of Primary Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, explained that the team visited the Department of Primary Education, the University Library, laboratories and other related places on campus, saying that what they found on ground had shown clearly that the University was indeed ready for the course. Prof. Ibiam disclosed that the team had examined the academic content, curriculum, physical structure of the Department, the admission modality, the laboratory and library facilities, among others. She advised the authority of the University to intensify efforts on things that would further give the Department a face-lift so as to be rated as one of the best in the country. In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), thanked the NUC team for painstakingly screening the Department without fear or favour. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research,

Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, explained that the University of Ilorin is very conscious of standard when it comes to research, teaching and community service. Prof. Olatunji described Primary Education as the foundation that must be given a proper attention and recognition to ensure that everything built on it stands on a good footing. He then pledged that the University would do everything possible to ensure that the institution sustains its leading role in terms of academic integrity. Earlier on Monday, the accreditation team was welcomed to the University by the Deputy ViceChancellor (RTI) on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali. The leader of the team, Prof. Ibiam, said the team was in the University of Ilorin to perform a national assignment given to them by the National Universities Commission as regards the accreditation of Primary Education, a new programme in the institution. She explained that the NUC representatives were not in the University to witch-hunt the authority of the institution but to look at what is on ground in the new Department. Prof. Ibiam, therefore, sought the cooperation and assistance of the University authority by providing the team with necessary information and enabling environment needed to carry out the exercise effectively and efficiently. In his response, Prof. Olatunji urged members of the accreditation team to feel free to conduct their exercise, pledging that the authority of the University would provide them with necessary materials, documents and necessary information they needed for the job.

We 'll support initiatives that prepare students for challenges - Ambali By Mustafa Abubakar

T

he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has restated the University's position to support any initiative aimed at preparing the students for the challenges of life. Prof. Ambali stated this last Thursday (December 17, 2015) while speaking at the official launch of the Repertoire initiative and exhibition organised by the Sqyground Africa in collaboration with the Federation of UNESCO Clubs of Nigeria held at the Unilorin Multipurpose Hall. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), Prof. J. S. Sadiku, said that the University is appreciative and supportive of the Repertoire initiative that is complimenting the efforts to achieve the objectives of making the students job creators and self-reliant. He said, “The University promises to continue to support any initiative of this nature that is aimed at preparing our students for the challenges of life. It is for all these purposes that we have incorporated entrepreneurship course that is compulsory for all our students in our curriculum. Prof. Ambali said that there is already a growing recognition that jobs have become scarce, and youth entrepreneurship has become an important strategy for integrating youth into labour markets, thereby addressing the unemployment challenges. In his address, the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), Dr. Umar Gunnu,

represented by Mr. Yusuf Abdullateef, said that the only way to improve the country is to empower youths, adding that the programme as organised will create such platform. In his speech, the President of the Federation of UNESCO Clubs of Nigeria (FUCN), Mr. John-Paul Usman, said that sustainable development provides environment, society and economy components, which Repertoire has carefully considered. Lamenting that we are living in a world that is increasingly marked by a growing interdependence in all areas of human activity, Mr. Usman said that the UNESCO Clubs have proved to be reliable and effective partners through which UNESCO creates awareness among the populace by mobilising and supporting initiatives of this nature. Also speaking, the CEO/Founder of the Project, who is a 400 level student of the Department of Information and Communication Science, Mr. Ibrahim Shittu, described the project as a digital platform meant to connect students' entrepreneurs across tertiary institutions in Nigeria using the identifying, testing, verifying, connecting and promoting strategies. A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Repertoire website and exhibitions by different University of Ilorin students entrepreneur groups such as Beta SMS Nigeria, Haddie Clothing, Smith Graphic, Amugold Group, Off Krents ,Bint Khidr Ventures, MED Photography, and Joseph Eric Clothings among others.

Unilorin Drama Village to become national tourist centre By Idris Alooma and Ishaq Babatunde

T

he Chairman of the University of Ilorin Drama Village and Lake Side Resort Management Board, Prof. Joseph Akintade Morakinyo, has said that the University was making efforts to make the Unilorin Drama Village a national tourist attraction centre. Prof. Morakinyo, who disclosed this last Tuesday (December 15, 2015) while featuring on a Unilorin 89.3FM weekly Yoruba current affairs programme 'Oro ton lo', said that efforts were in top gear by the institution to transform its Lake Side Resort into a reference point for Nollywood, Hollywood and the other entertainment industries. The Professor of Plant Biology, who explained that the Drama Village was designed to serve as a relaxation centre for both members of the University community and outsiders, promised that the village would be equipped with the state-of the-art recreational facilities for people to have maximum enjoyment while using it. Underscoring the importance of relaxation in

6

keeping the body fit, Prof. Morakinyo said that the essence of creating weekends by the colonial masters was principally to create an avenue for relaxation and recreation. He decried the attitude of some Nigerians who turn deaf ears to the utilisation of the weekend for pleasure, adding that such habit is the major cause of short life expectancy that is common in African countries. Prof. Morakinyo advised the Federal Government to pay utmost attention to tourism, saying that a country that attaches seriousness to tourism stands the chance of gaining two things- massive revenue generation and sound health of her citizenry. He disclosed that countries like Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and Venezuela generate enormous funds from tourism and encouraged the Federal Government to follow suit so as to boost the country's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) especially at this time when the price of crude oil is falling day by day in the international market.

Be unreasonable! (Dedicated to the newly admitted students)

T

he Institute of Corporate Administration (ICAD) held its 2015 Digital Entrepreneurship Summit on Saturday (October 31, 2015) at Kwara Hotel Limited, Ilorin, during which some staff of the University of Ilorin were admitted as Fellows and Members. As guest lecturer, I spoke on “Entrepreneurship Opportunities in the Digital Economy: A Communicative Approach”. During the interactive session, the point I made on the need to be unreasonable in the age of Digital Economy generated some heat. At that point, I used the Boiling Frog Theory to explain what was meant. At the end of the day, many people decided to be unreasonable, change and explore the entrepreneurship options available online and offline. The Boiling Frog Theory is basically an experiment. If you put a frog in a vessel of water and start heating the water, the frog adjusts its body temperature accordingly as the temperature of the water rises. The frog keeps on adjusting with increase in temperature until the water is about to reach the boiling point and it is no longer able to adjust anymore. At that point, the frog decides to jump out but is unable to do so because it has lost all its strength in adjusting with water temperature. Very soon, it dies. Actually, the background to the issue of being unreasonable is that in the year 1794, Thomas Paine wrote a book, “The Age of Reason”. It was all good to be reasonable. But in the year 1989, Charles Handy wrote another book, “The Age of Unreason”. Hence, it is no longer trendy to be “reasonable”. The difference between being reasonable, which Paine took pains to explain, and unreasonable, which came handy through Handy's book, was simply explained by the Irish Nobel Prize laureate, George Bernard Shaw. According to him, a reasonable man adapts himself to the world while the unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Now back to the theory, it is reasonable to say it was the boiling water that killed the frog. But what killed the frog was its inability to decide when to jump out. It requires some quality education to know when to jump out or confront a situation instead of just adjusting. In the digital economy of the 21st century, what you study does not actually matter; the world is interested in the excellence in you, what you have to offer.

Funke Akindele is an unreasonable young woman. She studied Law; she is a famous actress. Nkem Owoh is an unreasonable man. He studied Engineering at the University of Ilorin; he is a renowned actor. Dr SID trained as a doctor. An unreasonable man, he is a prominent musician. If these people were reasonable, they would practise what they studied by not “wasting” the investment, kill their talents and be anonymous. Listen, to be unreasonable is to be courageous in pursuing your dreams. Students dream and they need role models. The most unreasonable person in Nigeria today in my opinion is that man who will have my vote any day as future President of this country. His name is Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Look at him having the last laugh, the Lion Heart! Except you are unreasonable, how would you dare the all-powerful President of Nigeria and refuse to budge, despite all suffocating pressures? How would you jump from the party in power with all the privileges and lead an opposition campaign and believe you could unseat a “sitting” Nigerian President, something unprecedented? How would you risk your life because of principle and refuse to make peace with Mama Peace to enjoy your own peace? Being unreasonable would make you do all that. Unlike the frog, you jumped from the boiling water and today, everywhere you go, like MTN, you generate ripples. Even your enemies secretly admire you. Be unreasonable! Another unreasonable person I know is Ismaila Monsur Akolade, currently a Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos. He earlier spent 10 years at the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin. When he was to write his final exams, he just walked away. That was the last bridge to cross to be confined to a life of stethoscope, needles and syringes, which he never wanted. Today, the young man is making waves and I read with relish the interview he once grated “The Nation” newspaper. He is a campus celebrity, a social media aficionado, a potential First Class graduate, ruling his world like Glo and happy with himself now. Monsur, that admirably unreasonable young man who was inspired by “Three Idiots”, a movie! Better be inspired by idiots and excel than sit down and complain about your course or lament there is no job or opportunity! Be unreasonable!
