Kenyatta varsity hails existing MoU with Unilorin The student leaders from Nairobi, Kenya, who were led to the Vice-Chancellor's Office by the Director of Student Affairs of Kenyatta University, Dr. Edwin A. Gimode, were in the University of Ilorin on a four-day visit to understudy their Unilorin counterparts. According to the ViceChancellor, “Africans are known to be one another's brother's keeper. Taking care of one another is a heritage we have that is being envied and should not be lost”. Prof. Ambali told the Kenyan visitors that the University of Ilorin has a robust Students' Union, noting that the student body is given a free hand to determine what they want with little supervision. The Vice-Chancellor added that the University management supports the Students' Union's ideas and gives them freedom to actualise the ideas as part of the plan to make them good leaders of tomorrow. He pointed out that successive Students' Union leaderships have always adhered to their agenda. “The University of Ilorin”, according to Prof. Ambali, “has consistent academic calendar devoid of students' unrest because we dialogue with them”. He said that the continuous dialogue with the students is responsible for the University's smooth academic calendar. He stressed that the Students' Union election is transparent and conducted electronically as the students follow the spirit of collective responsibility. Pointing out that the Students' Union is a very crucial segment of the University community, Prof. Ambali explained that the University shields the Union from external influence that could make them derail from their primary objective. He said, “They need to be guided because we have all been students at some point

and we know how we think. We want them to learn from our mistakes”. Kenyan student leader hails Unilorin Students’ Union’s e-voting initiative (Contd. from front page) Mr. Werewere, who also lauded the infrastructural development and the sound transformational leadership of the University of Ilorin, said: “I am so happy to be here today to express our sincere gratitude for your hospitality and gracious welcome you gave us throughout this time that we have been here in Nigeria. It has been a very memorable time that we have in Nigeria to have cultural exchange, to learn from you what is being done in the University of Ilorin and to share with you and I believe in one way or the other, you have also learnt much from us from Kenyatta University.” According to him, as future leaders in Africa, there was a critical need for close contact and interaction between students across the continent in order to address the collective challenges confronting African countries. Mr. Werewere said, “If we have very close contacts and interactions at this level, then I believe even in the future, Kenya will be partnering Nigeria at greater levels because I believe whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve. So, this is just the beginning of our long leadership and it does not end in the University. The reason why we are here is to develop our capacity for the future.” The Kenyan Students' leader said further, “We have learnt a lot; the Unilorin Students' Union is structured in a way that it is very comprehensive, very inspiring. We have learnt a lot and we are going to borrow some key things and most impressive among them, is the e-voting. We felt it is very important and it is an achievement because it is very hard to find universities that practice that. Although I learnt there were challenges, I have also learnt that you have been able to overcome the challenges. Similarly in his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Dr. Edwine

4

The President of the Kenyatta University Students' Uassociation, Mr. Werewere, making his remarks at the luncheon Gimode, also acknowledged the warm reception accorded them by the University of Ilorin. Assuring that the hospitality was not taken for granted, Dr. Gimode said, “We are very thankful; I believe this visit will go a long way in making the MoU we have with the University of Ilorin stronger and more dynamic”. He expressed the hope that “before the end of this calendar year, we will receive a delegation from Ilorin in Nairobi; when that happens, we will be waiting for you. When you feel you will be able to come, let us just know and the rest will be on us.” Speaking earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Prof. A. E. Talabi, represented by the Sub-Dean, Dr. A. Yusuf, commended the role played by the former and present Directors of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu and Prof. M. O. Ibrahim, respectively, in the logistics support and for making the visit a success. He told the guests: “Whatever you have enjoyed here, it is nothing that is new but part of our own tradition. We have not done anything special for you but, indirectly, we are

telling other universities to continue to visit us and they will enjoy the same thing.” D r. Yu s u f , w h o a l s o commended the conduct of the students of both universities, espoused the values of cultural diplomacy, saying, “We must understand ourselves; it is only when we understand ourselves that we live in harmony.” Also in his remarks, the Director of CIE, Prof. Ibrahim, said that the Kenyatta University delegation was always welcomed to Unilorin. He called for the strengthening of the relationships between the two universities through academic collaboration and linkages. The President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union, Mr. Idris Alao, said that the visit of the Kenyan students offers an avenue for African students to interact. He expressed appreciation to the University authority for providing the platform to host the visiting Kenyatta University students. While praying for their safe return back to Kenya, Mr. Alao said, “We have been doing things almost in common as though they are part of the University of Ilorin; we also hope that very soon we will have the opportunity to return the visit.” Highlights of the luncheon, which climaxed the four-day visit, were the presentation of souvenirs by the Kenyatta University delegation to their hosts. Erratum The printer's devil struck on March 7, 2016, wreaking a subtle havoc on “The Podium” column. The second article under the column, titled “Kudos to Adeoye”, was somehow mutilated. For that reason, the article is hereby reproduced:

ndoubtedly, the outgone Chairman of ASUU, Unilorin Chapter, Rasheed Adeoye, has really defined what Constructive Unionism means. He has, indeed, established the standard for Reasonable Unionism. In spite of the hazardous trying times he endured as the Chairman of ASUU, Unilorin Chapter, which he himself had described as “loathsome and awesome”, he recorded great and indelible achievements – surprisingly without any bloodletting and disruption of the system. The achievements are legion and amazing in their quality and quantity. In no particular order, I

should mention the ones that are extremely remarkable to me. Annual promotion of qualified members into professorial cadre, 2014 appointment into the professorial cadre and the special respite for a few committed individuals that deserved it, donation of 1% of November of academic staff salary to the IDPs, ASUU Shopping Mall, Purchase of Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus for Union activities, ASUU Hostels and host of others that space cannot permit me to list here. One will wonder how he was able to achieve this much in the environment of disunity, or within what he described as the “prevailing

situation of dual antagonism”. The simple answer for any agitated mind is that he and his Exco were just simply constructive. Unionism does not necessarily need to be disruptive. It does not mean that Adeoye was a stooge. No! Neither was he a passive conformist, but he was reasonable and calculated. He did not compromise with the Administration on issues that were of great interest to the members of the union he led. His success, to me, is a product of commitment to truth, respect for due process, respect for elders' advice, and, above all, desire for unity, reconciliation and integration. Congrats!

Responsible unionism as a calling

A

s I was sieving through my notes in preparation for this write-up last weekend, the philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the th 19 Century English jurist and social reformer, flashed through my mind. Of particular interest to me was the “fundamental axiom” of his “greatest happiness of the greatest number” dictum. And I quickly realised that the espousal of this philosophy by all stakeholders at the University of Ilorin, especially its workers and management, has been the critical factor responsible for the enduring peace, stability and giant strides being witnessed at the University. Nothing better demonstrates this commitment to ensuring the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people than the unity of purpose between the University management and the various staff unions. Joined like Siamese twins in a single-minded strive for excellent service delivery, it is not surprising that the Unilorin workforce and the University administration have continued to set good examples, in the country, on how to run a world-class university. And as I stated in a previous outing of Town & Gown, “the culture of conscientious leadership and supportive followership is so contagious at the University of Ilorin that sundry staff unions have invariably become partners in progress with the management as against the cat-and-mouse syndrome that often characterises the relationship between workers and managements in many universities in the country”. As the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), often says, the raison d'être of the University, any university, is the student populace, and, according to him, everything must be done to ensure that the students' interests are served at all times. In this regard, the recent reaffirmation of commitment to a stable academic calendar in the University by the local Chapter of the Academic Staff Union

of Universities (ASUU) is heartwarming. It is an unambiguous reassurance that the University is indeed poised for greater heights. The new ASUU Chairman, Dr. Usman Adebimpe Raheem, a veteran unionist from his student days, told the Vice-Chancellor during the maiden meeting of the new ASUU officials with the University management that “this is the continuation of the last executive. We are on the same page with the administration and we have made a choice against forces of destabilization. We believe in stability and we must actively maintain the momentum in place”. The ASUU Chairman, however, told the Vice-Chancellor that while the Union intends “to be as friendly as possible”, it “would also be as forceful as possible when it comes to members' welfare matters. For instance, he said, “When we ask for what is due to us, we may not insist on 100 percent, but we will push for and ensure that we get 99 percent”. And of course, the Vice-Chancellor assured the Union that its cooperation would be

adequately reciprocated, saying, “The management is ready to cooperate with you and we will make your work easier and apparent”. Indeed, the Unilorin Chapter of ASUU has continued to enthrall me each time I review its activities. It is the first university workers' union in the country to empathize with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with its recent donation of over N3 million to the unfortunate victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country. The Union had, earlier in 2011, made monetary donations to the victims of the Tsunami earthquake in Haiti. It should be noted that these donations were not from the Union's check-off dues but special contributions by members from their salaries. Also, Unilorin ASUU is the first university staff union in the country to build students' hostel in a move aimed at helping the University management to tackle the chronic accommodation challenges facing students on campus. No doubt, this is the hallmark of responsible unionism!

Prof. Abdulkareem's well-deserved appointment he recent appointment of the erudite Professor of Educational Management, Adedayo Yusuf Abdulkareem as the new Deputy ViceChancellor (Management Services) has been hailed across the University campus as a round peg in a round hole. Prof. Abdulkareem, who is the immediate past Director of the Institute of Education (IOE), University of Ilorin, is bringing into his new office a rich pedigree of commitment to service excellence. Feelers from his last duty post show that he is an astute manager of men and resources. Town & Gown heartily congratulates this man of letters and wishes him Allah's protection and guidance in his new assignment.

…To our brand new Profs, bravo! he University of Ilorin management has again demonstrated its commitment to acknowledging and rewarding excellence with the recent release of the promotion/appointments of 43 new Professors and 96 Readers. Like the Chief Imam of the University, Prof. A.G.A.S. Oladosu, said in his Juma'at Sermon last Friday (March 18, 2016), the attainment of the Professorial rank, though “ highly washable”, does not really call for frivolous celebrations. It is a call to higher duties, which must be discharged with the fear of the Almighty God. To the new eggheads, Town & Gown says bravo and more power to your elbows!
