Unilorin matriculates 11,057 new students Prof. Ambali told the 11,057 matriculating students that “the period between matriculation and graduation is short”. He counseled, “So, it is better you pick the race early so that you will reach your destination with success and happiness. In this regard, you should motivate and encourage yourselves. There is no one who can set a limit to your achievements except you”. The Vice-Chancellor, whose address was entitled, “Character and Learning”, further told the new students, “If you are target-driven and goaloriented, your average of four years in the University will lay a solid foundation for your future. Interestingly, the future is even now. Therefore, set your mind to excel and by the grace of God, excellence shall be yours”. He, however, pointed out that the University places a high premium on character “such that it even supercedes learning”, adding that “the University motto, “Probitas Doctrina”, or simply “character and learning”, emphasizes character because without character, all learning is futile”. Prof. Ambali, therefore, advised the fresh students to remain good ambassadors of their families and communities while also remaining steadfast and serious in carrying out their primary assignment, which is studying. The Vice Chancellor disclosed that a total number of 11,057 students were admitted by the institution this year out of the 103,000 candidates that applied to the University as First Choice in the 2015/2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME). “I felicitate with you and your parents that you are able to make it despite all the odds of the examinations”, Prof. Ambali told the new students, saying, “You passed the O' Level examinations and you succeeded in the U n i f i e d Te r t i a r y M a t r i c u l a t i o n Examinations and the post-UTME screening. May you continue to succeed in your future endeavours.” The Vice-Chancellor, however, enjoined the new students to ensure that they make positive marks as they journey through the University. He said, “This institution offers you several opportunities to distinguish yourselves academically and otherwise. Some of

Some of you will also become entrepreneurs, applying part of what you learn profitably even while still in training. In all these, hard work, diligence and determination are required”. Urging the students to “remember God”, Prof. Ambali told them, “If you put God first, other things will fall in place and your efforts will be blessed”. A major highlight of the ceremony was the administering of the Matriculating Oath on the new students by the Registrar of the University, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, who also advised them to always abide by the rules and regulations of the University. Mr. Obafemi urged the new students to accord utmost respect to all dos and don'ts of the University and ensure they eschew all forms of illicit acts while facing their study squarely in their own interest. The occasion was attended by all Principal Officers of the University as well as the Deans of the various Faculties and Directors of Academic and nonacademic units. Earlier in the week, a three-day orientation programme was held for the freshers. In their separate lectures during

the programme, the University Chaplain and Deputy Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin, Dr. A. Ogunkunle and Dr Nasir Abdulsalam, respectively advised the students to be religiously tolerant and see themselves as one so as to live happily and peacefully on campus. In his own speech, Mr. Leke Owolabi, who represented the Chairman of the University Dress Code Committee, advised the students to strictly abide by the laws of the University, warning that stringent action would be taken against any student that violates any of the University rules and regulations. Mr. Owolabi urged the students to shun all anti-social behaviour such as cultism, examination malpractices, k eep in g b ad co mp an y, jo in in g unregistered associations on campus, indecent dressing, and engaging in physical combat, among other illicit acts. With donation to IDPs, Unilorin blazes new trail – DG FEMA (Contd. from front page) Presenting a cheque for the amount to the Director General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Abuja, Mallam Abbas G. Idriss, last Tuesday (January 26, 2016), the Vice-Chairman of the Union, Dr. Lanre. Ajibade, who represented the Chairman, Dr. AbdurRasheed Adeoye, said that the contribution formed the bulk of the voluntary one per cent contribution from the University lecturers' November 2015 salaries. It would be recalled that the members of the Unilorin Chapter of ASUU had, at their last October Congress, unanimously agreed to donate one per cent of their November 2015 salaries to the IDPs in the country as part of the Union's humanitarian assistance. The ASUU Vice-Chairman said that the donation was not a one-man idea but a unanimous decision of all the members of the Union at the University “to assist those afflicted due to the Boko Haram insurgence”. Dr. Ajibade said, “On October 27 this year, we met at our congress and asked ourselves what can we do to assist the IDPs, those children without fathers and mothers, those women without husbands, and on that premise, we asked ourselves that can we donate one per cent of our November salaries for the IDP and unanimously, it was adopted. That was how we harvested the N3, 078, 092.91 we are donating today.” Pointing out that “this is not the first time the ASUU of the University of Ilorin will be doing this”, the ASUU leader disclosed that “in 2011 during the Tsunami earthquake in Haiti that rendered so many homeless, we donated one per cent of our salaries to the victims. But today’s donation is very significant to us. It is not from our check-off dues”. On what the Union has done in the past in terms of community services, the Vice-Chairman said that Unilorin ASUU is the first to build students' hostel, adding that it has also built a shopping mall for the use of the people of the University community. Receiving the cheque on behalf of the IDPs, the Director General, FCT Emergency Management

Agency (FEMA), Abuja, Mallam Abbas Idriss, commended the ASUU, for coming all the way from Ilorin “to identify with us and the IDPs within the FCT”, adding, “It is indeed a big effort from your own end to have taken that step and it is really gratifying to hear that Unilorin ASUU is really concerned about the IDPs and have taken it upon themselves to donate one per cent of their November, 2015 salaries to these unfortunate people.” Mallam Abbas said that the Agency always welcomes humanitarian efforts from members of the public towards making life a little more bearable for the IDPs, adding that FEMA, Abuja, is grateful for the support from the academic staff of the University of Ilorin. He said, “These internally displaced persons were like us before but they were displaced from their homes for no fault of theirs and today they lack so many things but we are happy with this kind of support that we are receiving today from the academic staff of the University of Ilorin.” The FEMA boss stated further, “I want to report that this is the first of its kind from the Nigerian universities and I am calling on other universities to emulate this gesture from the Unilorin ASUU. You don't have to bring money, you can bring clothes and medications; they are going to be useful for these people.” Promising that the money donated by the Unilorin ASUU will be judiciously used, Mallam Abbas said, “We are really very grateful and hope you will convey our appreciation to the entire academic community of the University of Ilorin. Let me also assure you that we are going to give you the full account of the way the money is spent at the end.” In her own remarks, the Head of Relief and Rehabilitation at FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Abuja, Mrs. Rachael Alikali, appreciated the wonderful gesture from the University of Ilorin ASUU and prayed that God would bless and replenish members of the Union abundantly.

Abdulkareem elected new DVC (Contd. from front page) He attended Offa Grammar School, Offa from 1969 to 1973 and Advanced Teachers' College (now Federal College of Education), Zaria from 1974 to 1977 for his NCE at which he had distinction in Mathematics and Physics. Prof. Abdulkareem also attended the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, from 1979 to 1981 where he obtained B. Ed. (Hons.) in Educational Management and Mathematics. Dr. Oni, who disclosed this last Tuesday (January 26, 2016) at a workshop on the adaptation of operational manual for the North Central Network, held at the University of Ilorin, said that the World Bank had noted the determination of the University towards the success of water research. The NWRI Director of Training explained that the Institute had not made good its financial commitment to the University of Ilorin because of its zero budget allocation last year. On the rationale for the workshop, Dr. Oni explained that it was to look into the 2015 operating manual in order to see how it could be domesticated in the University and fashion a new way to seek modern ways of operations. The NWRI Director pointed out that the workshop would help to define roles and operations, adding that it would also allow the Institute to understand the University's internal vision. He added that the workshop would enable the Institute to carry along relevant agencies and stakeholders in water research, while commending the University of Ilorin for “its usual cooperation”. Dr. Oni said, “NWRI is committed to the practical training of sector stakeholders to develop their capacities and equip them with skills for implementing integrated water resources management; it is also in pursuance of the Institute seeks to provide leadership and focus on the conduct of applied research; acquisition, analysis, storage and dissemination of water resources data and information in Nigeria.” In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who was represented at the workshop by the Deputy ViceChancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, described the

NWRI assignment as a national assignment, stressing that water is life. He noted that for every space exploration, what is most critical is to find water in other planets because life cannot survive without water. He submitted that the University has made the best use of the resources provided by the NWRI. The Vice-Chancellor said, “Without proper planning as you are doing today, things will not work well. Thank you for confirming to us that we have done you proud. This University does not have a single abandoned project. We complete all projects and do an excellent job”. He charged participants to take maximum benefits of the workshop, noting that “there is the need to work harder in order to prove that we can compete with the advanced countries”. In her own address, the Director of the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT) Prof. (Mrs.) T. A. Oladiji, pointed out that the commitment of the NWRI is very commendable, noting that money is the least problem when people have good ideas. Prof. Oladiji disclosed that there are funding agencies seeking good ideas to fund, pleading with the participants to make useful contributions to the centre and their respective institutions. In a goodwill message, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Chuks Nbaike, charged the University of Ilorin to ensure that the operational guideline is fully adhered to. Mr. Nbaike commended the Vice-Chancellor for the good works he is doing in the University. “We have seen evidence of what you are doing. We are hundred per cent assured that things are moving fine here”, he said. Dr. Ojuade, who disclosed this last Tuesday (January 26, 2016) while featuring on a Yoruba current affairs programme, 'Oro t'onlo' on Unilorin 89.3 FM, said that the institution is adopting advocacy visits to philanthropists in order to move the institution forward because the allocation given to Nigerian universities by the Federal Government is not enough to meet the needs of an institution that is striving hard to be among the best in the world. The Performing Arts scholar pointed out that the institution's advocacy visits have “started yielding fruits, as several developmental projects, sponsored by some of those who have so far responded to our calls, have started springing up on the University campus while some others are expected in the coming months. Dr. Ojuade specifically disclosed that the courtesy visit by the University Principal Officers, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, to the Ooni of Ife penultimate Friday (January 22, 2016) has started yielding result as a philanthropist and friend of the Ooni pledged to donate solar lantern to the institution and its host community. institution in the country with hospital equipment worth millions of naira, a golf course, a polo club, and books for the University Library, among other things. The Director of the Advancement Centre, who described the Vice-Chancellor of the University, as a visionary leader who wants the best for the institution, noted that Prof. Ambali has plans to make the University of Ilorin one of the best in the world. He, however, stressed that funding has been the major constraint of the University administration. Dr. Ojuade disclosed that efforts are being intensified to have a shuttle train in the University in order to ease the transportation challenges in the institution. He said that the shuttle train will connect all the campuses of the institution. Dr. Ojuade disclosed that the University of Ilorin is set to host the World Universities Theatre Festival. According to him, the event is designed to promote drama, cinema and the Nigerian culture as well as to celebrate the University of Ilorin as a home of theatre. The don, however, frowned at the rate at which Nigerian theatre practitioners are promoting indecent dressings through their outlooks and movies. Dr. Ojuade also noted that indecent exposure of the female body is one of the causes of the incessant cases of rape and sexual harassment across the country. He charged parents and guardians to train their children and wards moral lessons for their bright future to be guaranteed.

44 get Linguistic Immersion Centre's proficiency certificate

F

orty-four foreign students have been awarded the Proficiency Certificate of the University of Ilorin Linguistic Immersion Centre after successfully completing their course of study at the Centre. At the colourful ceremony that took place penultimate Friday (January 22, 2016), the Director of the Centre, Dr. Elisabeth De Campos, expressed gratitude to all those that have always supported the Centre, especially the University of Ilorin management. Dr. De Campos specifically commended the wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Ambali, who went as far as following a management team of the Centre to the Republic of Benin for the recruitment exercise. She said that Dr. (Mrs.) Ambali “abandoned the luxury of her personal car to travel in the same bus with the students”. In his remarks on the occasion, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Abdussalam, expressed his appreciation for the students' choice of Nigeria for their

9

studies, noting that a successful linguistic immersion programme is a clear indication of the success of a university. The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Dr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Ambali, implored the awardees as well as the current students of the Centre to continue to always be good ambassadors of the University of Ilorin anywhere they find themselves, in their display of academic excellence, moral rectitude, social virtues and values. Dr. (Mrs.) Ambali also agreed with Prof. Abdussalam that one of the criteria for a good university, like Unilorin, is the presence of international students and staff. One of the students, Marie-Joel Hode, was presented a special merit award for outstanding performance in academic and constant readiness to serve the Centre's interest in other capacities.

The January obituaries

T

he month of January 2016 has come and gone but its memory will continue to linger because of the sour taste it left in our throats. At least, two tragedies befell us as a community. These were two obituaries which shook many of us to the foundations of our arteries. The University is mourning. To me, like many others with common ground in various ways, they were personal losses. It was first the death of Adedola Adepetu that drew a dagger into my heart. An alumna of the University, staff member of Unilorin 89.3 FM station till her death and 2010 graduate of the English Department, the late Miss Adepetu was a good ambassador of her Department at her beat. It was a ghastly motor accident that claimed the life of the vivacious young lady on Sunday, January 17. I had supervised the final year project of Adedola and had kept a tab on her progress, like some others, since she graduated. It was gratifying that she later joined the services of her alma mater in 2014 and she had since then carved a niche for herself among our OAPs (On-Air Personalities), with her recognisable voice and elan. Just two days before her unfortunate death, she had pinged to update me on an earlier discussion on her additional academic pursuit. Death snuffed life out of her at the most unexpected time. As if the tragedy was not devastating enough, death, the stalking terminator, still prowled on the University community. A week after, precisely on Sunday 24th of the month, the news hit us like a tornado that the dynamic Head of the Department of English, Dr Patrick Olajide Balogun, had answered the last call. A top University contact had called in the morning to ask after the late consummate scholar and a description of his house. After saying he was fine, I had an eerie feeling that something was amiss as the question was unsettling. A call to the Chairman of ASUU, Dr Abdur-Rasheed Adeoye, left me open-mouthed in petrifying disbelief. Incoherent and lachrymal, Dr Adeoye was an emotional wreck on the phone. My heart sank with a thud. The rest, as they say, is history. Since 2001 that we both joined the University, Dr Balogun had always struck me as a complete gentleman. A robust scholar, rigorous researcher, astute administrator, creative writer, literary critic, social activist, union leader, bridge builder and man of God, Dr Balogun wore many caps with admirable panache. He gave his best in all the various platforms he served with impressive finesse and

effectiveness. Academically humble and generally unobtrusive, even if avuncular, he was always a jolly good fellow to be with in his “archetypal” conviviality. As Secretary-General of ASUU at a point, we worked closely together on a crucial union project and I appreciated more the several glittering aspects of his life. He was a source of inspiration with his boundless energy, way of life and intellectual acumen. When he became the Head of the Department barely six months ago, the late don further revealed himself as a man of abundant vision. His plan included the organisation of an international conference, the publication of a book and the institutionalisation of a professional publishing arm of his Department. He hit the ground running by putting the machinery in place towards the actualisation of these goals. Dr Balogun touched the lives of everyone who was associated with him positively. He was an epitome of simplicity and paragon of humility. He belonged to that rare breed of scholars who would defer to and even “Sir” subordinates. It is an irony of life that straight trees don't last in the forest. The loss of good men like him is a loss to humanity, not just his family and other entities to which he was affiliated. As an academic giant, Associate Professor Balogun was a well-acclaimed expert in Oral Literature, Prose Fiction and Literary Criticism all of which he explored through modern literary theories especially his favourite Archetypal. A thorough-bred Unilorin alumnus, he was an active member of several academic and professional associations including the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), American Studies Association (ASA) and African Literature Association (ALA), among others. This writer commiserates with the family, especially his wife and colleague, Mrs Bamitale J. Balogun, the entire family, friends, colleagues in the Department, Faculty of Arts and University, associates, kin and compatriots and the entire Kogi collective. “Like toys we are in the hands of fate/ The Will will be wrought on its day or date”, I wrote long ago . The January obituaries are a jolting reminder that tomorrow is not certain and it is therefore imperative we seize the day and do good. Adieu, Adedola; bye, Dr Balogun! May God give all, especially their families, the fortitude to bear the painful losses!
