VC thanks Ghanian President Prof. Ambali told the Ghanaian President that the Unilorin team was in Ghana to register the University's appreciation to him for attending the Anniversary and Convocation ceremonies of the University held last October. “We came to say thank you, Your Excellency, for attending our 40th Anniversary and 31st Convocation ceremonies”, the Vice-Chancellor told President Mahama, adding, “Your presence made the two events memorable, as it added colour to them”. Prof. Ambali added that “up till now, the whole country is still talking about the Anniversary Lecture you delivered on the occasion.” In his response, President Mahama thanked the Unilorin delegation, saying that it was a remarkable privilege for him to have been invited to the University's Founder's Day ceremony. The Ghanaian leader said that since his visit to

Nigeria last October, he had taken time to constantly monitor the progress of the University of Ilorin, saying that the University “stands out as a very distinguished centre of learning.” He also said, “Since then, I have been following developments at the school and I have become an honorary member of the institution, stressing that “we have created a partnership as I have become a part of Unilorin.” President Mahama, who was in company of the Majority Leader of the Ghanaian Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin, remarked that the invitation by the University of Ilorin “also gave me a good opportunity to visit my homeland, Offa after my last visit in 1981.” The Vice-Chancellor later presented some souvenirs to President Mahama, which included photo albums of the anniversary and convocation ceremonies as well as some traditional Nigerian cloths.

mpressed by collaboration between the University of Ilorin and Uka Tarsaida University (UTU), Bardoli, India, an Indian philanthropist in Nigeria, Mr Naranbai G. Patel, has pledged a donation of N25 million to support researchers at the University of Ilorin. This was contained in a letter written by Mr. Patel to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON). In the letter, a copy of which was made available to Unilorin Bulletin, Mr. Patel, a holder of the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), promised to redeem the pledge in five equal installments of N5 million over a period of five years. Expressing confidence in the ability and visionary skills of the University administration under the leadership of Prof. Ambali, the philanthropist said, “In line with my assurance of support of N5 million per year over a period of five years, I am enclosing herewith my cheque no 9844 drawn on GTB in

favour of University of Ilorin towards the payment of the first installment of N5 million”. It will be recalled that the University of Ilorin signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uka Tarsadia University, UTU, Bardoli, India in 2014 following which both institutions organised a joint conference in India. Again, both institutions collaborated on the Unilorin Tissue Culture laboratory, contributing researchers to work on studies at the laboratory. Also in 2015, Prof Ambali was at UTU, India, to deliver the University Public Lecture. The Director of the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), Prof. (Mrs.) A.T. Oladiji, whose Centre will utilise the fund on behalf of the University, disclosed that two researchers from the University of Ilorin recently visited UTU for research collaboration in Biotechnology.

55 new Unilorin medical doctors inducted (Contd. from front page) Prof. Ambali stated that the University of Ilorin has come of age in terms of producing highly qualified graduands who are always made to go through unblemished academic programmes that stand the test of time. The Vice-Chancellor added that the University would not rest on its oars but would continue to do everything possible to maintain and sustain its wellknown academic integrity in the interest of adding value to the society within which the University is domiciled. He disclosed that the University authority had embarked on various infrastructural projects at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) including the construction of a 6.5 km road network that links the Teaching Hospital with the University main campus. He explained that the link road would ease the transportation system on both campuses and also add more impetus to the University administration. Prof. Ambali pledged that the University would continue to evolve programmes and projects that will always place the institution high in the committee of ivory towers in the country, adding that he was convinced that the newly inducted doctors would continue to make the institution proud by their excellent expositions of their professional calling. In her lecture on the occasion, the Guest Speaker, Prof. (Mrs.) Kikelomo Osinusi of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Ibadan, canvassed for more female doctors in Nigeria in order to break some barriers created as a result of limited number of female practitioners in the country. Prof. Osinusi, whose lecture was titled "Rising Profile of Women in Medicine: Implications for Healthcare Delivery in the 21st Century", expressed hope that the more female doctors Nigeria produces the more effective the country's healthcare delivery service would be. The Guest Speaker hinted that available data revealed that Nigeria had just 39.5 per cent of female doctors in 2015 and described the scenario as improper considering the male to female ratio in the country today. Prof. Osinusi explained that if women have appreciable percentage in the medical profession, they would be in position to tackle some of the health related problems, adding that women have the advocacy power

to convince people to key into the country's health care system. Advising the graduands to rise to the challenges ahead and make the interest of their patients paramount in their minds, the Guest Speaker urged them to attach seriousness to their careers and cultivate the habit of developing themselves academically, adding that Medicine is a noble profession that needs life-long learning for them to continue to be relevant. In his welcome address, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Johnson, said that the choice of this year's topic was in response to the pleasant national trend in the gender distribution of undergraduate medical students, and a corresponding trend in those who are currently pursuing their (post graduate) residency careers in various medical specialties. Prof. Johnson urged the 55 inductees to seek career pathways and specialties of their choices, and remember the tradition of selfless service and excellence on which the College prides itself. The Provost described the Guest Speaker as a world renowned Paediatric and infectious disease expert, who he said is his mentor and role model since his residency training days. Administering the professional oath on the new medical doctors, the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Abdulmumeen Ibrahim, advised them to be humble and sincere with their profession, saying that he who humbles him/herself would be regarded as the best among them. Dr. Ibrahim, who was represented by the Director, Medical Service and Training, Kwara State Ministry of Health, Dr Zeenat Saad, also congratulated the parents and guardians on investing in their children and prayed God to crown their efforts. The event was attended by the University Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, the Chairman of the Kwara State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. A. Ayinla; the Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Oladosu; the immediate past Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. A. B. O. Omotoso; the husband of the Guest Speaker, Prof. A. Osinusi, as well as parents of graduands, among others.

Unilorin Ladies Circle seeks support for persons with special needs By Mustafa Abubakar

T

he President of the University of Ilorin Muslim Ladies Circle, Mrs. Hajarat Abdulwahab, has charged members of the Association to support Persons with Special Needs in the country. Mrs. Abdulwahab, who made the call penultimate Sunday (January 10, 2016) during the Maolud ceremony of the Association, held at the Kwara State School of Special Needs, Apata Yakuba, Ilorin, Kwara State, said that by so doing, members will be contributing to the efforts of the Association in supporting the needy as enjoined by Allah. The President disclosed that the Association, in its drive to assist the less privileged and students with special needs, recently donated some materials to the School of Special Needs. In her remarks, the Chairperson of the occasion, who is also the wife of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.) H. T. Ambali, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to always spend their wealth to improve the lives of the physically challenged in the society. Dr. (Mrs.) Ambali commended the efforts of the staff and management of the school for adequately taking care of both the pupils and students of the school. On why the programme was held in the school, Dr. (Mrs.) Ambali said that it was to give the students a sense of belonging, adding that “students of the school need special care and attention, let us show them love, let us give them care and let us always give them happiness”. In his lecture, Dr. A. Oladimeji of Al-Hikmah

University, Ilorin, urged Nigerians to always show appreciation to God for whatever mercy He (God) has shown to them. Dr. Oladimeji said, “Many received blessings and mercy from God, but they pretend as if nothing good has come to them. It is good that we should always show appreciation by thanking God for His provision". He said that holding the event at the premises of the Kwara State School of Special Needs was an indication that the University of Ilorin Muslim Ladies Circle never forgets the students and the school community. Appreciating the presence of everyone at the occasion, the Principal of the School, Hajia Fauziat Aroyehun, thanked the University of Ilorin Muslim Ladies Circle for the honour done to the school and prayed to Allah to continue to bless both the association and the members. While thanking the Kwara State Governor,Alhaji AbdulFatah Ahmed, and his wife for the various supports they have rendered to the school, Hajia Fauziat lamented that the school is battling with the challenge of electricity and inadequate potable water. She, therefore, called on other well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid. The highlight of the occasion was a Quiz competition among the students of Unilorin Secondary School; Government Day Secondary School, Adewole; Mandate Senior Secondary School; Muslim Model Secondary School and the School for Special Needs.

Unilorin holds researchers' exhibition next month

By Adeyinka Ademuyiwa rrangements have been concluded by the authorities of the University of Ilorin to hold the institution's first Researchers Exhibition in February. Disclosing this in a chat with Unilorin Bulletin last Tuesday (January 12, 2015), the Director of the University's Laboratory to Products (LABTOP) Centre, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, said that the event, which will be held annually, will hold at the University Multipurpose Hall. According to Prof. Abdulkareem, the Exhibition, which will attract many guests, including the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. S. E. Bogoro, is to showcase findings and research outputs of the University academics to the outside world. Prof Abdulkareem, who was until recently the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, said, “Already, all Deans, without any exception whatsoever, have been contacted, sensitised and mobilised to play active roles in the coming fair Some of them are even planning to do Facultybased fair prior to the February fair and we are supporting such initiative”. The Director said, “We shall partition the Multipurpose Hall into 15 sections, one for each Faculty to exhibit their previous research outputs, on-going researches and future research plans”. Making references to the United Nations Patent Convention along with recent modifications, to which Nigeria is already a signatory, the Professor of Chemical Engineering identified six categories of researches that can be patented. These, according to him, include process, machines, manufacture, composition of matter, designs, and hybrid plants. According to Prof. Abdulkareem, the process is the utilization of the force or elements of nature to effect useful change in material, environment or information while a machine is an assemblage of co-acting mechanical parts, which receives energy and transmit it to an object, or otherwise produce a useful result. “The responsibility on each researcher in this University is to go beyond presenting academic papers for promotion. We are raising the bar and expecting them 11 to patent their findings even if it is not physical products”, the Director said, adding that ideas and new research methodologies are as vital and interesting to development professionals as the products that emanate from them. He added that “patenting is not only for tangible products”, pointing out that “I made that clear wherever I

A

go since I accepted this job”. The LABTOP Director explained that “ideas are patented and people pay royalties on them. The conditions to register a patent are that, it must be new, novel and useful; it must be beneficial to mankind and should be an improvement over previous ones. Each researcher must know we are in business to solve societal problems. So when you use methods that have not been used you should patent them”. On the process required to patent an item, Prof. Abdulkareem pointed out that it involves “a visit to the legal unit of the University with your work; the legal unit, upon receipt of such document would approach the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) and other relevant government agencies to register it; the researcher gets a unique number for the document and is asked to wait for between three months to six years for the agencies to work on the document, searching archives for any interferences; and when satisfied that there are no interference, the agency issues the researcher a patent which is for a lifetime”. Prof. Abdulkareem further disclosed that though the researcher gets the royalty, and will be credited as the inventor, he is expected to share the royalty with his research group if any, his Department, his Faculty, etc. “In this University, what has been approved is that researcher gets 30%, his research group takes 15%, Department gets 10%, Faculty gets 10%, this Centre gets 15% and the university gets 20%”, he further said, adding that “the researcher is not even paying a kobo to register the patent so really there is no loss in the process to the researcher”. He also disclosed that the Centre and some research groups in the University have commenced work in response to Prof Oyawoye's challenge to explore means of reducing the fruiting period of shea butter tree from the present 14 years.

People and events that made Unilorin tick in 2015 (2) (Contd. from December 28, 2015 edition) Due to space constraint, we could not conclude our review of the Year 2015 in the last outing of Town & Gown. But there were seceral other landmark events that equally defined and reaffirmed the preeminent status of the University of Ilorin in 2015. These included the discovery of new anti-malaria compounds by one of our own dons; the rapid internationalisation drive of the University; the sustenance of a peaceful campus devoid of unbridled aluta; the dogged sustenance of a unique clean and green environment, as well as the attraction of an unprecedented number of foreign dignitaries to our campus.

Prof. Obaleye (New anti-malaria compounds) One of the several research breakthroughs recorded at the University was the discovery of new anti-malaria compounds by a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Joshua Ayoola Obaleye. And with the recent establishment of the Centre for Laboratory to Product (LABTOP), the groundbreaking discovery by this STEP-B funded researcher will soon find its way to the country's pharmaceutical industry. Pr of. Ibrahim (champion of internationalisation drive) Building on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor, the Director of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim, continued, in the year under review, to facilitate students and staff exchange programmes with foreign institutions. Apart from promoting regional integration, this move has also placed the University of Ilorin on the global map of higher institutions of repute. Prof. Omotesho (chaperon of a virile student unionism) Through a combination of administrative acumen and sagacious leadership, the immediate past Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho, was able to lead the 30,000-strong student population of the University on the path

of sustained peaceful relationship with the school authorities. And as a result, the students have imbibed the spirit of aloa that encourages profitable engagement, as against destructive, unbridled aluta. Engr. Sanni (the clean and green apostle) There is no gainsaying the fact that apart from having one of the largest campuses in Africa, the University of Ilorin also has one of the cleanest in the continent. This has always been the unmistakable testimony of virtually every visitor to our campus. The University has creditably maintained its clean and lush-green environment in the year under review through the efforts of the Works Department under the Director, Engr. Mobolaji Sanni. Dr. Ojuade (man with extensive networks) It could be said without any fear of contradiction that the University played host to more high-net-worth guests in 2015 than in any other year. The visit of the Ghanaian President, Dr, John Dramani Mahama and several other global figures to Unilorin in 2015 was facilitated by the Director of the Unilorin Advancement Centre, Dr. Jeleel Ojuade. The Performing Arts scholar was also instrumental to the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several business leaders on construction of hostels and other beneficial partnerships.

Minister Daramola and the Unilorin spirit

T

he well-known Unilorin spirit of honesty, integrity, probity, accountability and openness was recently displayed by a great Unilorite, the newly appointed Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Prof. Claudius Daramola, when he, without any prompting from any quarters, returned the December 2015 salary credited to his account by the University's Bursary Department. Prof. Daramola, who, until his ministerial appointment last November, was a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, told newsmen in Akure penultimate Tuesday (January 9, 2016) that his decision to return the salary, was in keeping with “the on-going crusade against corruption and fraudulent acts by President (Muhammadu) Buhari”, adding, “I should do everything to support the exercise”. The Minister said, “In my own conviction, I believe taking the December salary from Unilorin, which was my last place of work, will be tantamount to fraudulent act of receiving

double salary; even though I have not received December salary as a minister, but I have to return the money as an agent of change and anti-corruption”. Even though Prof. Daramola attributed his action to the new wave of anti-corruption sweeping through the country, if he had not imbibed the Unilorin spirit, such line of action would have been a little difficult to take, given the pervasive “Nigerian mentality”. In a country where many would willingly partake in the sharing of funds allocated for national defence and divert same to private uses, it takes a super human to willingly part with money already paid into his account, especially when nobody is raising any eye brow! Town & Gown salutes the Honorable Minister for keeping alive the Unilorin spirit. With people like Prof. Daramola in the Federal Executive Council, there is yet hope for the restoration of our dear country!
