Unilorin VC extols Emir’s virtues Dr. Sulu Gambari, who is also the Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, ascended the throne on November 11, 1995 to become the 11th Emir of Ilorin. In a congratulatory message, a copy of which was made available to Unilorin Bulletin, Prof. Ambali said that the past 20 years of the Emir's reign have “witnessed numerous socio-economic developments in Ilorin city in particular and in Kwara State in general”. He added that this has been made possible by Dr. Sulu Gambari's “administrative sagacity and people-friendliness”. The Vice-Chancellor, who extolled the virtues of the Emir, also expressed happiness that Dr. Sulu

Gambari's reign has been characterised by “peaceful coexistence of all inhabitants of the Kwara State capital regardless of tribe and creed”. Prof. Ambali particularly commended the Emir, who is the Chief Custodian of the University of Ilorin's host community, for his fatherly advice that has so far ensured harmonious relationship between the institution and members of its host community, saying this has helped in no small measures in advancing the University's commitment to its community service mandate. The Vice-Chancellor then prayed the Almighty Allah to grant the Emir many more years of peaceful reign to the benefit of humanity.

lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Mr. Oluwapelumi Adeyemi, has set a record at the University of Leeds, UK, where he is currently a Ph.D. student. He had the singular honour of being the first Ph.D student in the University's Faculty of Biological Sciences to deliver a lecture to a highly informed audience of university dons, prestigious scientists, scholars and students of the Faculty. Mr. Adeyemi's lecture, entitled “Poliomyelitis: Why do we need a new vaccine and how close are we to developing them?”, was co-presented with his supervisor, Prof. Nicola Stonehouse, a professor of Molecular Virology in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (SCMB). The lecturer told Unilorin Bulletin via an electronic mail that “the lecture covered my previous experience with polio immunisation programmes in

Nigeria and the ongoing international research on a novel polio vaccine being developed by a consortium of researchers from the University of Oxford, University of Reading, UK, the National Institute of Biological Studies and Controls, UK, John Innes Centre, UK, Harvard University, USA. The consortium is headed by Professors Dave Rowlands and Nicola Stonehouse of the University of Leeds, UK, where my research work has led to an important breakthrough in the project”. Mr. Adeyemi also disclosed further that the multi-faceted project is being sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as Rotary International. The Unilorin scholar, who was awarded the joint second prize of the Astbury Society for Structural and Molecular Biology, University of Leeds, was also honoured by the Rotary Club of Bradford, UK, in recognition of his ongoing research work on the novel polio vaccine.

Don seeks greater collaboration between varsities, research institutes (Contd. from front page) The Inaugural Lecturer noted that plant breeders remain the solution to tackling this challenge through the production of quality, high-yielding crops, saying, “Whatever the limitation may be, the plant breeder has a responsibility to model the genetic constitution of the crop to enhance its reproductive ability and ensure adequate food production for the survival of mankind.” Prof. Olaoye said, “For plant breeders to remain relevant in an agrarian society such as ours and to ensure survival of mankind worldwide, newer and more productive varieties must be made available for cultivation in relevant target ecologies”, adding that “achieving this objective requires commitments from the government and the private sector in funding plant breeding activities, including qualitative training programmes especially for emerging plant breeders and geneticists that will equip them to compete effectively with their counterparts both nationally and globally.” Highlighting his contributions to his field of study, the don, who is also a former Director of the Unilorin Sugar Research Institute (USRI), dwelt extensively on researches carried out by him and his colleagues on attributes determining sugar yields and breeding values of the local sugarcane genetic resources which have been useful in the selection index adopted in the identification of superior progenies from hybridization programme that hastened the process for use of varietal development in sugarcane as well as the improvement of maize. Prof. Olaoye disclosed that “even in the face of dwindling funds, the Institute had recorded many achievements through the dedication of the existing research associates”. He highlighted some contributions of the Institute to include, the training of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; executing consultancy services for the Nigerian sugar industries; attracting funds from external relevant agencies such as the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Abuja, to conduct research that addresses issues germane to the sugar industries as well as participating actively in the activities of the nationally coordinated research projects on sugarcane funded by the NSDC, Abuja. He further explained that presently, the USRI “is coordinating activities of the West African Sugarcane Development Project in the sugarcane growing ecologies of the southern Nigeria”, stating that “these activities have projected the image of the Institute beyond its base at the University of Ilorin and also outside the shores of Nigeria.” According to him, “Based on the performance of the Institute and its credibility through well conducted research and articulated reportage of its research activities, the NSDC is currently establishing a Sugarcane Bio-factory at the Institute's permanent site opposite the Agricultural and Rural Management

4

Training Institute (ARMTI), Ilorin”, he stated. Putting forward his recommendations, Prof. Olaoye stressed the need for greater collaboration between research institutes and relevant faculties in Nigerian Universities, saying that, “resources of the institutions can be pooled together to achieve greater success in teaching and solving common research problems.” He also called for the upgrade of existing facilities for research, pointing out that conscious efforts must be made to acquire “state of the art” equipment in our laboratories to carry out research especially in new areas of Plant Breeding and Genetics, including molecular techniques that aid faster understanding of genetic basis of quantitative traits.” The don lamented that “apart from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, it is doubtful if there is any laboratory in a Nigerian University or Institute that can effectively carry out research in this area”. Prof. Olaoye also implored the University administration to redeem its outstanding pledge to construct an earth dam at USRI for irrigation; equip the laboratories to carry out relevant quality analyses; increase the annual subvention to enable Research Associates conduct meaningful research and hire additional technical and field staff to complement the existing ones. In addition, the Inaugural Lecturer called for harmonization of courses in Genetics and Breeding for cross fertilization of ideas, saying, “A student who lacks the understanding of meiosis cannot grasp the concept of Mendelian inheritance, let alone the complicated cases of gene behaviour through molecular technique.” He stated that in order to bridge this gap and ensure competent plant breeders, courses in Basic and Quantitative Genetics should be restructured in line with modern trend in the discipline and made compulsory for potential students of Genetics and Breeding at the Postgraduate level, adding that graduate students in Plant Breeding and Genetics should not be restricted to courses offered in the Departments of their residency. The former USRI Director called for the restructuring of the Institute to attain its objectives, saying that “the number of Research Associates in the Institute has been greatly depleted and the majority of the remaining members are essentially “good brains with tired legs”. This, he maintained, “underscores the need to inject young academics into the system to have a blend of old with ideas and young ones with zeal and energy to execute the ideas.” Prof. Olaoye, therefore, urged “the University Administration to come to the aid of the Institute to sustain the present level of achievements, surpass it so as to achieve the stated objectives and visions of the founding fathers of the Institute.”

Unilorin may deploy drones for exams monitoring

By Fatima Abubakre

I

f the authorities of the University of Ilorin accede to suggestions by members of the institution's Drone Team, it is highly probable that the University will, in future, monitor examinations conducted within the campus with drones. The drones, developed by a team coordinated by Prof. Sulyman AbdulKareem of the Department of Chemical Engineering, added colours to the just th st concluded 40 anniversary/31 convocation ceremonies of the University. Other members of the Unilorin Drone Team include Dr. M.T. Yakubu of the Department of Biochemistry; Dr Babalola of the Department of Physics; Engineer Eric and Mr. Ahmed, both of the Department Electrical and Electronics Engineering. In separate interviews with Unilorin Bulletin last Thursday (November 12, 2015), the Co-ordinator of the team, Prof. AbdulKareem, and another key member of the team, Dr. Yakubu, said that drones can be used to monitor the conduct of examinations in future as well as general campus surveillance in conjunction with the security personnel”. According to Prof. AbdulKareem, “the use of drones has come to stay because where you don't want to endanger human life, a machine, which a drone is, can go there and still get the information you need”. He pointed out that “drones, rather than infringing on human rights, actually protect human rights because the man who wants to do evil and knows that a machine can remotely capture his act, will not likely do it”. The Unilorin Drone Team Coordinator, who is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, disclosed that some academic departments in the University have started showing interest in the use of the drone. He said, “I believe that apart from giving practical knowledge to those in Geography, Electrical Engineering and Physics, virtually any Department that may have a reason to capture events beyond what is in front of the camera, which has to be aerially covered, can use the drone.” Prof. AbdulKareem urged the University administration to challenge people to do more “because

there are lots of students who are eager to learn and who have ideas that they can put into practice if they have good supervision. He said, “I believe it is a matter of encouragement. Most Nigerian universities should be able to do wonderful things and make major breakthroughs”, noting that some students were coopted into the team to learn how to operate or fly the drones. The Drone Team Coordinator enjoined the newly appointed ministers especially for the areas of science and technology, “to see a need for us to selfdevelop, self-evolve, and self-emancipate as a nation”. He said, “For a long time now, we have relied on personnel from foreign countries to bail us out of every technical problem we get into, but the issue is that, we have so many Nigerians that are trained abroad that are here and even those who have not left the country that are equally talented that should be encouraged to do wonderful things for the nation.” Prof. AbdulKareem maintained that the new ministers “should see their appointments as a chance of working with the academics in the educational institutions to promote what will be good for the nation, to make the nation as a whole self-reliant on personnel that are available locally.” In the same vein, Dr. Yakubu said, “We can also use the drone to monitor what is happening on our borders; we have a very vast amount of land, and we can use it to track activities that are going on there. Invariably, we can use the drones to cover the entire University and in getting information to the appropriate quarters. ” The Biochemistry Lecturer, who urged the University to ensure that the use of drones on the campus remains functional and sustained, advised that “it should not only be used during the convocation as we did last time, but we should put it to all-round use on campus. Dr Yakubu said that drones can be used to monitor the conduct of examinations in future; we can use it for surveillance on the campus and when you look at all these, it will be of advantage to the whole University”, he stressed

Unilorin Students' Union holds leadership training summit By Fatima Abubakre

N

igerian students have been challenged on the need to make themselves relevant and be outstanding in whatever position they may find themselves in order to take their rightful position in the leadership of the society This was the crux of submissions by various speakers at the Leadership Training Programme organised by the University of Ilorin Students' Union last Tuesday (November 10, 2015), tagged “Redefining Student Leadership in the 21st Century.” The event, which took place at the University Auditorium, dwelt extensively on issues affecting the Nigerian youth and particularly their participation in the governance of the country. Welcoming participants to the training programme, the Students' Union President, Mr. Idris Alao, noted that much was expected from youths in Africa given the projection that the African youth will make up one-quarter of the world's population in the year 2025 and half of the world's population by 2040. In the light of this, he pointed out that “this is a call to action for all of us to bring and effect the much-needed change on our fatherland ahead of 2040.” According to the Students' Union President, “The complexities inherent in the world we live today had occasioned lots of changes in different aspects of our lives; from politics, to the economy, infrastructural development, social welfare and capacity building; all have assumed more dynamism in this century”. Alao pointed out that “the art of leadership has equally embraced those dynamics, and as such, leadership has become an art to learn and a profession to join”, adding that “within the context of student leadership; one can say it has gone beyond the conventional cliché of “aluta. Leadership is far beyond having an ordinary ambition to hold a political office. One thing that is central to leadership is the zeal to effect “change” and not just ordinary change but “positive change.” In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs and Chairman of the event, Prof. O.A. Omotesho, stressed that leadership is very crucial to the success of any organisation or institution. While enjoining the students to tap into the benefits of the programme, Prof. Omotesho observed that leadership is a very knotty issue in Nigeria, saying the personality of President Muhammadu Buhari alone “has changed a lot of ways; and the fear of the President is like the beginning of wisdom.” Among the resource persons at the training programme were the Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), University of Ilorin, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji; the CEO of D-Positive Image Consult, Mr. Nasir Abdulqadri; the CEO of Streetgist

6

App, Mr. Toyeeb Godo; CEO of Coins Communication Consult; Mr. Mustapha Muh'd Jamiu and the CEO of Heroes World Foundation, Mr. Mike Oladipo, among other distinguished youth leaders and entrepreneurs. In his presentation, entitled “Aloha Unionism: Strategising for Effective Conflict Management”, Dr. Adedimeji, who highlighted some hallmarks guiding leadership, said leadership is about love and leading by example. “It is love that will propel you to want to lead others; that is when you think of giving and not receiving. If you don't love the people, you do not have any business leading them”, he remarked, adding that “if you are not disciplined, you cannot be a leader.” He listed other basic principles to include, taking action, discipline, excellence, responsibility, service and sacrifice, honesty, integrity and planning. The CPSS Director, who also advanced some conflict management tips, explained that conflict is inevitable in interpersonal relationships. Distinguishing Aloha Unionism from Aluta, Dr Adedimeji said, the University of Ilorin Students' Union is making a profound ideological statement, through Aloha Unionism, which is built on the principles of perfection, love for the students and the University and peace, which is not negotiable. He described this brand of unionism as one that is progressive, constructive and positive, maintaining that “no longer will unionism be destructive and counterproductive as was witnessed last in this University in 2004…” The CEO of D-Positive Image Consult, Mr. Abdulqadri, in his submissions, said that leadership is about responsibility and service, noting that the youth had important roles to play in the society. He frowned at the proposed N5,000 monthly subvention for unemployed youths by the present administration, describing it as a palliative measure to further disempower unemployed youths who were likely to depend continuously on the aid without tasking the perception of their responsibilities towards themselves, the society and the nation. On his part, the CEO of Streetgist App, Mr. Godo, enjoined the participants to constantly challenge the status quo and think outside the box. The Spain-based Unilorin alumnus, who emphasised the importance of reading and access to information in order to achieve excellence, explained that the reason why many remain unsuccessful is “because they do not have access to great information.” He announced his plans to donate some books to students of the University. Panelists at the event included the former Ag. Head, Computer Science Department, Dr. R. G. Jimoh, a former Unilorin Students’ Union President, Dr Alex Akanmu of the Faculty of Education and Dr Badmus of the Faculty of Agriculture.

An armed robber broke into a house and found a couple indoors. Pointing the gun at the woman, he said, "I like to know the names of my victims before I kill them." "I am Elizabeth", said the woman. "Ooh I can't kill you, my mother's name is Elizabeth!" said the robber. "And you?", he asked the man, pointing the gun at his head. "My name is Roland, but all my friends call me Elizabeth, I swear!”

Unilorin @40: Echoes of a remarkable celebration

F

ive unforgettable days. Two memorable events. Two Presidents. Two State Governors. Two First Class Emirs. Three former Vice-Chancellors. About 42 ViceChancellors. Several Deputy Vice-Chancellors. A couple of Registrars. Two national theatre troupes and several renowned Nollywood artistes. And of course, a crème de la crème of the nation's media – print and electronics. What on earth could these personalities be doing at the same place on the same days and for palpably the same purpose? Dateline Ilorin: During the week of October 19 to October 23, 2015, the nation's Number One citadel of learning was agog with the double celebration of its 40 years of existence and the 31st edition of the convocation for the award of degrees to a new set of quality manpower it has just produced. And for this reason, the University of Ilorin rolled out the drums in understandable thanksgiving for the sustenance of excellence! For this reason too, Unilorin played host to an unprecedented number of quality guests who have come from all walks of life to celebrate with the University and identify with its eye-popping achievements that have stood it out among the 132 odd universities in the country. President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal, and his Ghanaian counterpart, President John Dramani Mahama, were the Star Guests and they were supported by the Governors of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, and his State of Osun counterpart, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, ably represented by his Deputy, Mrs. TitiLaoye-Tomori. The institution's new Chancellor and Emir of Katsina, HRH Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman and the Emir of Ilorin, HRH Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, added royal glamour to the festivity while the administrative machineries of no less than 42 universities in the country and two foreign ones – the University of Cape Coast, Ghana and Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical (A & M) University, USA - were momentarily relocated to Unilorin campus, as their ViceChancellors joined in the celebration of our Founder's Day on October 23! It was indeed five days of action-packed events, mostly celebratory, some acclamatory, some admonitory, some advisory, some reprobatory, some exhibitory, and some contributory. With four fun-filled performances, comprising three dramatic concerts and a film show, two keynote addresses – the 40th Anniversary Lecture by President Mahama of Ghana and the 31st Convocation Lecture by Prof. Jacob Oluponna of the Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA – a Presidential address by the Visitor, President Buhari; and two reunions – one bringing the pioneer staff of the University, including the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. Akinkugbe, face-to-face with the current staffers and the other bringing together the University alumni from far and wide – the entire celebration will remain a talk-of- the-town for some time to come. And to cap it all, some 22 newly completed projects were commissioned on the last day by the representative of President Buhari and President Mahama of Ghana.

The film show and dramat presentations were both fun and pithy, as they were all suffused with germane lessons about life and living. And all the lectures were loaded with policy statements and advices as well as insights into the government's policy direction. In the Convocation Lecture, entitled “Educational Reform and Nation Building in Nigeria”, Prof. Oluponna canvassed an urgent reform in the country's educational system in such a way as to guarantee the much-desired change and produce a well-informed citizenry for national development. According to the Nigerian-born Harvard University Professor, a reformed education system would guarantee good governance and social justice, reduce poverty, increase literacy and provide a skilled, disciplined and hardworking labour force. On his part, while delivering the Anniversary Lecture, entitled “Africa's Agenda 2063: Ending Poverty and Ensuring Prosperity in Africa”, the Ghanaian President John Mahama lamented that the much-celebrated independence of African countries from the European colonialists “did not somehow translate to freedom”. For, according to him, “true freedom is something most of our people still do not have”. He, however, said emphatically that “this must change; we must make a change!” To achieve the needed change, President Mahama called for collective responsibilities by Africans to “take charge of our own destinies and to keep working together”. It was, however, not lamentations galore, as the Ghanaian leader devoted a substantial portion of his lecture to pouring lavish encomiums on the University of Ilorin, whose “contributions to human development in the past 40 years”, he said, “has placed Nigeria and the African continent on the path of true progress”. In President Buhari's address, his representative, the SGF, reiterated the government's commitment “to create employment and other opportunities for our youths to thrive”. He, therefore, urged universities in the country to “key into the evolving ethical revolution, because without discipline, law and order, no society can make any progress.” The Visitor also commended the University of Ilorin on its academic stability, quality education and unprecedented infrastructural development. Acknowledging the distinction of Unilorin as “being the most stable and most peaceful among Federal universities in the country, President Buhari said, “Because of this, the University is one of the most sought-after universities by parents and students alike”. On his part, the University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), focused his two separate addresses – one for each of the two-day convocation – on elaborate admonition for the new graduates. Prof. Ambali advised them to step beyond the ordinary and put in extraordinary efforts in order to achieve extra-ordinary results. Wah ooo! What a memorable week! If an encore is possible anytime soon, I know many would ask for more. Now!
