Unilorin’s stability is our unique asset — Ambali Dr. Raheem said, “This is the continuation of the last executive. We are on the same page with the administration and we have made a choice against forces of destabilization. There is no fence to sit on. We believe in stability and we must actively maintain the momentum in place”. The ASUU Chairman, however, told the Vice-Chancellor that while the Union intends “to be as friendly as possible”, it “would also be as forceful as possible when it comes to members' welfare matters. Stressing that members of the Union should not be allowed to suffer, Dr. Raheem said that the Union would be rendered irrelevant if the welfare of members is treated with levity. He told the ViceChancellor, “When we ask for what is due to us, we may not insist on 100 percent, but we will push for and ensure that we get 99 percent”. The ASUU leader thanked the Vice-Chancellor for facilitating the purchase of land by some of the Union members, calling for expedited action on the physical allocation of the land to their respective owners whom he said have already got the Right of Occupancy. Dr. Raheem, who is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, also raised the issue of the “Hazard Allowance”, which he said is “the current song on campus”. He said that the Union wants a reassurance from the management that the allowance would be implemented once the 2016 Federal Budget is passed into law by the National Assembly. The Union leader thanked the University management for “normalising the promotion of academic staff” as he pleaded for the early release of the call for the next promotion exercise. He also tasked the University

management for the timely release of the Ways and Means, stating also that financial benefits attached to promotion should be promptly implemented. On the issue of partial accreditation for some courses, Dr. Raheem noted that it is not good enough, attributing it to shortage of facilities and personnel. He requested the administration to look into the payment of sundry allowances to non-MB;BS graduates teaching identical courses. “You promised to implement anything that will benefit us and we have no reason to doubt you”, he concluded. In his response, the ViceChancellor said he was pleased to know that the Union is on the same page with the administration, noting that the stability the University of Ilorin has enjoyed over the years has made the institution unique in the country. Prof. Ambali said, “Anyone that loves tertiary education in Nigeria and the University of Ilorin will do the best to sustain the stability asset the University possesses”, adding that “the stability we have should not be mortgaged for personal interest”. T h e Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r explained that the University has remained stable because it has been on the same page with the various unions on campus, stressing that the stability is leading to tangible investment in the area of alternative energy and construction of new hostels accommodation by wellmeaning private entrepreneurs. He said that the stability enjoyed by the University makes it easy to sell the institution to donors and sponsors. Assuring the Union that the University management would adequately reciprocate its cooperation, Prof. Ambali said, “The management is ready to cooperate with you and we will make your

work easier and apparent”. The Vice-Chancellor also promised to look into the land issue to see areas where the University administration could intervene. On the issue of the hazard allowance, Prof. Ambali said that this and other allowances had been included in the University's budget proposal and assured that they would be implemented once the 2016 budget is passed into law. The Vice-Chancellor said that the normalisation of the promotion exercise would be maintained, noting that the administration is happy to see people promoted because it positively impacts their performance on the job. He called on the Departments with partial accreditation to see themselves as the beneficiary of the various accreditation exercises and take positive steps to ensure that their programmes get full accreditation. Prof. Ambali then congratulated the newly elected ASUU Executive Council members on their election and wished them a successful tenure. Other ASUU officers on the visit were the Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Y. Lewu; the Assistant Secretary, Dr. Alex Akanmu; the Treasurer, Dr. R. Jimoh; the Financial Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Owolabi; and the Auditor, Dr. (Mrs.) Binta Ibraheem. The Vice-Chancellor was joined to receive the ASUU leaders by t h e D e p u t y Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel D. Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Bursar, Mr. Saka Abiodun Yusuf; the Deputy Director, Corporate Affair, Mr. Kunle Akogun; and the Principal Assistant Registrar in the Vice-Chancellor's Office; Mr. A. T

he University of Ilorin took the centre stage last Wednesday (March 9, 2016) at the Nigerian Universities Research and Development Fair (NURESDEF) holding at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, when the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Technology and Innovation, Prof Gabriel Ademola Olatunji, chaired the first sub-theme lecture of the occasion, titled, “Entrepreneurship, Society and Sustainable Development”. It was delivered by the Managing Director of Maxwels Consulting, Prince Chijioke Ofomata. In his remarks, Prof. Olatunji commended the National Universities Commission (NUC) for initiating the research and development exhibition, which he said, has brought a healthy competition among participating institutions. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor said, “All our exhibitions are industry focused which this topic aptly and timely addresses”, adding that “already, many of our universities, in compliance with the NUC's new vision, have entrepreneurial curricula”. In the lecture, Prince Ofomata, who is a trained Pharmacist, said that the Federal Government is working with other multilateral international agencies to deliver on the United Nations'

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030. According to the lecturer, the Goals are, an end to poverty in its entirety, an end to hunger, good health and well being for the citizens, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, expansion of industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduction in inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, preservation of life below water (that is aquatic life), preservation of life on land and peace, justice and strong institutions. Prince Ofomata then urged the NUC and the universities in the country to align academic curricula to be entrepreneurially driven, adding that teaching methods should change to teaching human brain instead of cramming and memorisation. “Local research should be undertaken on various ways our entrepreneurs and business activities can be practiced in sustainable and environmentally friendly ways”, he counselled. In his own remarks, the Director of Research and Innovation at the NUC, Dr S.B. Ramon-Yusuf, who represented the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, said, “Nigeria has so many bright policies. It is often the implementation that is

the problem. Mr. Ramon-Yusuf explained that “since you cannot teach what you don't have, Nigerian Universities cannot teach entrepreneurship programmes”. He therefore suggested that for effective and result oriented entrepreneurship programmes, there should be a paradigm shift that allows university academia to do sabbatical programmes at industries' Research and Development Departments while industrial captains are also allowed to come to education institutions to teach practicals and entrepreneurship. The NUC official said, “We need more robust industryuniversities linkages”, canvassing a situation where universities own big companies, introduce open field laboratories, where students and other interested people can frequent to 'fool around' because according to him, “it is this 'fooling around' that made the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) what it is today”. Dr. Rahmon-Yusuf made a case for a situation where each Faculty in the nation's universities can attend to the local needs of their immediate community, particularly the university. He said, for instance, that the Faculties of Agriculture should be able to feed the university's population.

Obafemi restates Unilorin's commitment to prudent management By Idris Alooma and Tajudeen Babamale

T

he Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, has restated the commitment of the institution's management to prudence, transparency and accountability, saying that these virtues have conferred certain uniqueness on the University among its peers in the country. Mr. Obafemi gave the assurance last Tuesday, (March 8, 2016) when he featured on “Oro t'on lo” a popular Yoruba interactive programme on Unilorin 89.3 FM radio station, The Registrar observed that the institution's weekly financial digest that is published weekly in the Unilorin Bulletin has allowed the staff as well as the students to be conversant with the financial transactions in the institution. According to Mr. Obafemi, this is not just about being open to the world but to demonstrate to students of the most patronized institution in the country how best to lead. He pointed out that this system has been acknowledged and commended by individuals and organisations across the country. While commenting on the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy introduced by the Federal Government, the Registrar explained that the policy has no negative effect on any government agencies once they have no skeleton in their cupboard. According to him, the TSA

does not come to hinder the programme of any government parastatals, rather it is to encourage more transparency and decency in running the affairs of the nation's treasury. On the upcoming National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for members of staff of the University of Ilorin, Mr. Obafemi urged the staff of the University to make the best out of the opportunity that is coming their way by participating in the exercise. The Registrar, who said that the two-day exercise is coming up between this Thursday and Friday (March 17 and 18), advised the members of staff who are yet to enroll for the scheme to do so, saying that, they have a lot to gain from the service. According to him, the NHIS serves as a social security arrangement that provides financial security to the citizens against unforeseen ill health, adding that staff will have to pay only 10% of the normal charges once they are on the scheme. On the ongoing First Semester examination, which has been adjudged as hitch-free by the students of the institution, the Registrar commended the students for making the institution proud. He said so far, no case of examination malpractices has been recorded. Mr. Obafemi said that the University management is committed to the welfare of both staff

and students as a way of encouraging the two categories of members of the University community to give their best in service to the University and have a conducive learning environment respectively. He promised the students, especially those living off-campus, that the new park will be ready before the commencement of the Second Semester. Commenting on the just concluded election of the University's Postgraduate Students' Association (POGSASS), the Registrar described the e-voting exercise as a huge success because it allowed eligible voters to exercise their franchise without any hassles. Mr. Obafemi advised the nation's electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt the evoting system in the next general election in the country “because it allows for a process that is so auditable, transparent and secure as it also helps reduce human error”. The Registrar expressed his optimism that some of the over 40 research woks showcased recently at the 2016 University of Ilorin Research and Exhibition Fair would win national awards. He said that the researchers, led by the Director of the Laboratory to Product Centre (LABTOP) of this University, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, are in Awka, Anambra state, for the national exhibition.

Ex-DVC criticises FG's plan to import grass seedlings

By Fatima Abubakre

A

former Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. K. L. Ayorinde, has criticised the plan by the Federal Government to import grass seedlings for the proposed grazing reserves from Brazil, saying it is not in the best interest of the country. Prof. Ayorinde, who made this observation in a telephone interview with Unilorin Bulletin last Tuesday (March 8, 2016), said that the task of growing high valued grasses should be left to Agricultural Research Institutes and universities in the country, adding that doing otherwise could create additional burdens on the agric sector. The Professor of Crop Protection, however, endorsed the plan to establish grazing reserves in

the country, describing it as “a step in the right direction”. He said, “The government should look for ways of producing these things locally. We have many research institutes and we have many universities that we can give that burden to…we are in a hurry quite alright but we should hurry in the right direction. So, I don't think it is the best to be importing grass seedlings.” According to Prof. Ayorinde, patronizing and supporting the agriculture research institutes in the country will boost research and enhance local production “rather than wasting our resources on importation.” The former DVC also called on the Federal Government to empower small scale farmers as part

of measures to enhance food security in the country. He said, “Unless we go back to the land, that is when we can be food secure. We have to produce the food on our own, and it entails us providing the input to the farmers, encouraging the peasant farmers who are subsistence. I am not saying they shouldn't encourage the big farmers but the peasant farmers need these resources; the seeds, the fertilizers, the storage systems and if possible, a kind of buying back… the government buying back from them and giving them money to produce more. Until we are able to produce locally, we cannot be food secure. As long as we depend on importation from other countries to assist us, we are not just food secure we are also not secure politically.”

Be unreasonable!

(By popular demand this column, first published on December 21, 2015, is being repeated today)

T

he Institute of Corporate Administration (ICAD) held its 2015 Digital Entrepreneurship Summit on Saturday (October 31, 2015) at Kwara Hotels, Ilorin, during which some staff of the University of Ilorin were admitted as Fellows and Members. As guest lecturer, I spoke on “Entrepreneurship Opportunities in the Digital Economy: A Communicative Approach”. During the interactive session, the point I made on the need to be unreasonable in the age of Digital Economy generated some heat. At that point, I used the Boiling Frog Theory to explain what was meant. At the end of the day, many people decided to be unreasonable, change and explore the entrepreneurship options available online and offline. The Boiling Frog Theory is basically an experiment. If you put a frog in a vessel of water and start heating the water, the frog adjusts its body temperature accordingly as the temperature of the water rises. The frog keeps on adjusting with increase in temperature until the water is about to reach the boiling point and it is no longer able to adjust anymore. At that point, the frog decides to jump out but is unable to do so because it has lost all its strength in adjusting with water temperature. Very soon, it dies. Actually, the background to the issue of being unreasonable is that in the year 1794, Thomas Paine wrote a book, “The Age of Reason”. It was all good to be reasonable. But in the year 1989, Charles Handy wrote another book, “The Age of Unreason”. Hence, it is no longer trendy to be “reasonable”. The difference between being reasonable, which Paine took pains to explain, and unreasonable, which came handy through Handy's book, was simply explained by the Irish Nobel Prize laureate, George Bernard Shaw. According to him, a reasonable man adapts himself to the world while the unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Now back to the theory, it is reasonable to say it was the boiling water that killed the frog. But what killed the frog was its inability to decide when to jump out. It requires some quality education to know when to jump out or confront a situation instead of just adjusting. In the digital economy of the 21st century, what you study does not actually matter; the world is interested in the excellence in you, what you have to offer.

Funke Akindele is an unreasonable young woman. She studied Law; she is a famous actress. Nkem Owoh is an unreasonable man. He studied Engineering at the University of Ilorin; he is a renowned actor. Dr SID trained as a doctor. An unreasonable man, he is a prominent musician. If these people were reasonable, they would practise what they studied by not “wasting” the investment, kill their talents and be anonymous. Listen, to be unreasonable is to be courageous in pursuing your dreams. Students dream and they need role models. The most unreasonable person in Nigeria today in my opinion is that man who will have my vote any day as future President of this country. His name is Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Look at him having the last laugh, the Lion Heart! Except you are unreasonable, how would you dare the all-powerful President of Nigeria and refuse to budge, despite all suffocating pressures? How would you jump from the party in power with all the privileges and lead an opposition campaign and believe you could unseat a “sitting” Nigerian President, something unprecedented? How would you risk your life because of principle and refuse to make peace with Mama Peace to enjoy your own peace? Being unreasonable would make you do all that. Unlike the frog, you jumped from the boiling water and today, everywhere you go, like MTN, you generate ripples. Even your enemies secretly admire you. Be unreasonable! Another unreasonable person I know is Ismaila Monsur Akolade, currently a Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos. He earlier spent 10 years at the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin. When he was to write his final exams, he just walked away. That was the last bridge to cross to be confined to a life of stethoscope, needles and syringes, which he never wanted. Today, the young man is making waves and I read with relish the interview he once grated “The Nation” newspaper. He is a campus celebrity, a social media aficionado, a potential First Class graduate, ruling his world like Glo and happy with himself now. Monsur, that admirably unreasonable young man who was inspired by “Three Idiots”, a movie! Better be inspired by idiots and excel than sit down and complain about your course or lament there is no job or opportunity! Be unreasonable!
