The Vice-Chancellor disclosed further that the collaboration would afford the students of the University of Ilorin ample opportunities to run their Masters and Ph.D programmes at UoB with subsidised fees. He said that they also stand the good chance to enjoy benefits from the wide coverage of professional accreditation. The Vice-Chancellor said that with this and many collaborative drives of the University with other institutions within and outside the country, staff and students of the University of Ilorin will be better positioned to etch their names in the global map as far as sound and qualitative education is concerned.

How to curb Islamophobia – Imam-Fulani By Mustafa Abubakar

A

Lecturer in the Department of Telecommunication Sciences, University of Ilorin, Mr. Y. O. Imam-Fulani, has urged Muslims in the country to remain steadfast, patient and tolerant in the face of the current wave of Islamophobia around the world. He said this attitude of patience and tolerance was exemplified by Prophet Muhammad during his life time when he was subjected to horrible insults and hate crimes. Mr. Imam-Fulani gave the advice last Wednesday (December 9, 2015) while delivering a lecture on “Combating Islamophobia” at the 2015/2016 (1436/1437AH) Orientation Week of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Ilorin Chapter. He described Islamophobia as “an unnecessary and groundless culture of fear of Muslims and Islam emanating from a conflict between Islam and Western civilizations during peace and wars and intensified in particular areas called 'frontier'”. The don said that agents of Islamophobia such as War, Media and Propaganda used by the Western civilization are used to bring down the distinct nature of Islam and mock the Prophet. “Islamophobia”, he explained, is “a contrived fear or prejudice fomented by the existing Eurocentric and Orientalist global power structure”. He said that the prejudice “is directed at a perceived or real Muslim through the maintenance and extension of existing disparities in economic, political, social and cultural relations, while rationalising the necessity to deploy violence as a tool to achieve "civilizational rehab" of the target communities (Muslim or otherwise)”. While proffering solutions to the phobia, Mr.

Imam-Fulani stressed the need to send greetings to the Prophet Muhammad, which is the main way Muslims demonstrate love for the Prophet, urging that protest against issue of mocking the prophet through any means be made more honourable since it is for the love of the Prophet. He added, “Do not engage in any form of protests that are condemned in Islam. This includes burning flags or other symbols that people hold in esteem or insulting other religious groups. Unfortunately, some newspapers have commissioned the drawing of anti-Semitic cartoons in protest of the offensive Danish ones. This is a disgusting form of retaliation that deserves absolute condemnation. Not only does this contradict Islamic rules of respect for others, it will neither help fight Islamophobia, nor elicit any understanding about why Muslims are upset about the Danish cartoons.” He, however, noted that not all media or nonMuslims support this type of insulting behavior. “Many have been at the forefront of condemning torture, bombing and occupation”, he said. Mr. Imam-Fulani pointed out that the leading cause for Islamophobia is usually misinformation or total lack of information based on the religion. “Unfortunately, Islamophobic people are not likely to be willing to educate themselves about their fears or spend time around any Islamic people. This feeling is somewhat understandable, as they do claim to be physically afraid of the Islamic people, but this attitude will likely lead to a worsening of their fear and not provide any situation for positive change”, he said. The event was witnessed by staff members of the University of Ilorin Muslim Community, as well as members of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Ilorin.

(Contd. from front page)

According to him, this also informed the introduction of the multipurpose Identification Card (Combo card) for both staff and students of the institution. Prof. Ambali disclosed that the feedback has been very encouraging as the iPad has really gone a long way in enhancing students' academic performance. He said, “Gone were the days when students were limited to outdated materials in the library, but with the introduction of the iPad and e-library, students and staff have golden opportunities to access current materials as they unfold around the globe. The Vice-Chancellor, however, commended the management of Verve for remembering the students of the institution with such monumental gifts and described the gesture as morale booster for recipients of the prize and potential winners in the coming Verve Card raffle draw. Prof. Ambali said that the University of Ilorin places high premium on Information and Communication Technology. No fewer than 12 students of the University received prizes ranging from 32-inch television sets, laptops, cash prizes and air time from Verve Company as compensations for activating and using their Unilorin Verve cards for transactions. Abdulrahman Muhammed, a 300 level student of the Faculty of Pharmacy won a Plasma TV set while Ige Oluwatosin, a 300 level student of the Department of

Information and Communication Science won a laptop. Other students that won various prizes at the Unilorin @40 Verve Card Raffle draw included Kamali Azeez, Oguniyi Joseph, Mahmud Olarewaju, Ayilara Oluwashayo, Ifebude Abigail, and Olujide Taofeeq among others. Earlier in his address, the representative of Verve Company, Mr. Ugo Obasi, said that the idea of giving was to encourage students and staff to develop positive attitude towards the usage of Verve Card. He disclosed that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Verve is an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, saying that he graduated about 10 years ago from the Department of Computer Science with First Class Honour. He advised both staff and students of the University to take the bull by the horns and make use of the card within their reach, pledging that great rewards and advantages await those who use their cards optimally. The Verve representative, who gave kudos to the management of the University of Ilorin for always blazing the trail in the scheme of things, affirmed that Unilorin was the first tertiary institution in the country to partner Verve for the production of Combo cards for both staff and students. Mr. Obasi disclosed that the prizes presented to the winners were just a tip of the iceberg as more would be presented to potential winners by January next year.

Oladosu seeks Nigerians' suppor t for Buhari's anti-graft drive

By Ishaq Babatunde

T

he Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Oladosu, has urged Nigerians to support the ongoing efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to stamp out corruption in the country. Prof. Oladosu, who made the appeal in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin, said the only impediment to the country's progress is corruption and concerted efforts should be made to fight it to a stand-still. He said that corruption is the biggest scourge facing the country today, pointing out that if the government succeeds in stamping out the scourge, all other associated problems confronting the nation would become things of the past. The Professor of Arabic Education noted that Nigeria, as a nation, ought to have risen above its present level of development considering the enormous resources at its disposal.

Prof. Oladosu explained that the fight against corruption should be seen as a collective responsibility that requires the input of both the leaders and the led. He said that Nigerians are right-thinking human beings that can effectively separate the wheat from the chaff, adding that we don't need external forces before we do the right thing at the right time. Prof. Oladosu, who is also the former Director, Centre for Ilorin Studies, University of Ilorin, also called on various anti-corruption agencies in the country to take the bull by the horn and ensure that all animals are equal in the treatment and handling of corrupt men and women. He said that “the law is no respecter of persons”. The Chief Imam, therefore, called on Nigerians to support the present administration whole-heartedly so as to achieve its ultimate goal of bringing the country out of the wood.

& Gum care, as integral as tooth care Don't neglect gums when it comes to taking care of your oral hygiene. Plaque gets accumulated not only in teeth but also in and around gums. Brush your teeth twice and rinse your mouth whenever you eat anything. Bleeding gums while brushing are indicative of infection. Brush around the gum margins with the help of an angled brush. Massage the gums tenderly with finger or soft tooth brush bristles.

Fabulous Master plan

S

ince its inception, the University of Ilorin has been successively having purposive leaders, who are farsighted and committed to leaving indelible marks on the path of the progress of the University. The founding fathers of the University must be ceaselessly appreciated for their vision of building a campus like no other. They did not only acquire a massive and expanse of land that no other University in Africa or even beyond can boast of, they also bequeathed an ostentatious master plan, which their successors have been building on to actualize the founding fathers' inventive dreams and goals for the University. The splendid master plan builds in flexibility accommodates shifting academic priorities and economic realities. It has, therefore, incredibly served as a tool that has helped the successive leaders of this University to establish a continuing framework guiding the orderly growth and development of the campus within the charter of the University's timeless mission. Working within the extraordinary master plan, each of the successive leaders that had steered the ship of this University had exploited opportunities of enhancement that have been moving the University gradually to its present enviable position as the leading University in Nigeria. Evidently, the present leadership team, headed by the equally visionary Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdualGaniyu Ambali, has been reinvigorating the bequeathed superb master plan to achieve the mission of the University in a unique and memorable way. The Vice-Chancellor's ideas and ideals about providing world-class environment for learning, research and community service, to me, are transformative. The transformative ideas and ideals are built on the commitment to construct or revive, on the campus, a vital and appealing urban community that can attract and retain the best faculty, students and staff from anywhere in the world. His campus development strategy appears, to me, as an urban-design framework that is intended to establishing a network of efficient mobility system as well as integrating academic and residential life. These intentions ostensibly are all derived from overall objective of refreshing students' campus experience, which is vital to their success. It is indisputable that moving around the campus easily, comfortably, and safely is critical to the well-being of the campus community. Indeed, safe, efficient mobility helps ensure a vibrant academic setting, where connectivity and community integration enhance coherence and collaborative initiatives for learning and research. The transformative ideal of building efficient mobility system on the campus is, to me, so patently inherent in the present leadership's campus development strategies. The construction of the main road that connects the main campus with the College of Health Sciences in Oke Oyi is a fascinating accomplishment of this ideal. The road, which is near completion, will facilitate mobility between the main campus and the College with ease and within less than ten minutes without necessarily going through the stressful busy road in the town. The on-going construction of the dual- carriage road along the Bank Road, which is envisioned to complete a Ring Road, is also a piece of demonstrable evidence of the

commitment of the present administration to build a physical environment that is unique and memorable. According to the Director of Physical Planning Unit, Engr. Ademola Adesiyun, the Ring Road is envisioned to go through the Bank Road to join Tuyil Hostel from where it will go to Zamfara Hostel in order to link back to the Roundabout at the center of the academic area. The vision of the administration in respect of the Ring Road, according to Engr. Adesiyun, is to reduce the congestion, occasioned by students' movement, on the Block 1-10 Road. Interestingly, the administration is intending to reinstate the urban framework of campus development that will build more Ring Roads as the opportunities for growth expand. Although I am not an urban planner, I see this vision, from my layman perspective, as unique, sustainable-driven and memorable. The plan will not only make the University campus more beautiful, it will also make it function better. Besides, Prof. Ambali's administration needs to be commended for a commitment to the larger framework for creating optimum environment for learning and research. The ultra-modern lecturer, theaters, the like of the New SLT, springing up in all nooks and crannies of the campus, are evidence of this commitment. We need more of these though. The Researchers Lodge at the Lakeside is also an intriguing symbol of the administration's commitment to creating worldclass environment for research. Using Lodge to describe the facility is, to me, a misnomer because the so called lodge is a five star hotel. With just N20, 000, one can have the best luxury in a suite that cannot be obtained with less than N100, 000 in Nicon or Hilton. The personal facility tour I made to the Lodge last week was an eye - opener to some of the implicit transformative happenings on the campus, and which many of us don't know. Student success rates are, indeed, heavily influenced by residential and student-life programmes on campus. Ambali's administration, undoubtedly, acknowledges this and this is perhaps why it has plunged into action by embarking on the building of two relatively big hostels immediately the Federal Government lifted the ban on the involvement of universities in the construction of hostel accommodations. One of the hostels located around Abuja hostel will accommodate 250 students- 4 in a room, while the other located at the College of Health Sciences will accommodate 150 students- 2 in a room. The two hostels will soon be completed. Certainly, the administration recognizes the need for more of these hostels in order to accomplish optimally its desire to give the students a thrilling and supportive campus experience necessary for their success. Perhaps this is why the ViceChancellor is intensifying his efforts at concretizing benefitting partnerships with private investors. As this administration makes giant stride in enhancing the super master plan the founding fathers of this University foresightedly created, I recommend that it should make efforts at strengthening or reviving critical maintenance culture. It is through the efforts that its legacy and accomplishments in the areas of transformative campus development could be enduring.
