Unilorin MSSN holds Jihad Week

(Contd. from front page) The erudite scholar also urged the youths to maximise the benefit of the month of Ramadan through the recitation of the Holy-Quran, performance of Nawafils, giving Sadaqah and helping one another to achieve goodness. He added that for one to witness the month is a great opportunity. In his presentation, the Director, Darus-Salaf Islamic Centre, Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, Ustadh Qamardeen Bello, described the religion of Islam as distinctive, saying that it has come with verified proof. Speaking on the Theme: “In the Haven of Light”, Ustadh Qamardeen, said that Islam protects and preserves through the revelations of Quran and Sunnah. According to the Muslim cleric, “The distinctive nature of Islam protects and preserves. This can be seen in the cultural values and education, Islamic symbols and emblems, our history and the Sharia applications in the rulers and the leaders”. He said that the vastness, comprehension and universality of Islam has made things adequate and sufficient for the adherents, adding, that “the applicability and sustainability has also shown that it is a religion that is confirmed tested and trusted”.

While welcoming participants to the event, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, tasked the students to always bring out the beauty of Islam in them and not to be afraid in showing the bounties of Allah in them. Prof. Adeleke, who is also the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Muslim Community, pledged the continuous support and commitment of the Unilorin Muslim Community to the progress of the MSSN. While reviewing the journal, Albayyan (The Explanation), Dr. L. K. Mustapha of the Department of Mass-Communication, University of Ilorin, recommended the journal for all Muslim students on campus as it would help them in their quest for the Islamic ethical values. The journal, according to Dr. Mustapha, contains educative topics and columns that address salient issues that need clarification. Earlier in his opening remarks, the Amir (President) of Unilorin MSSN, Mallam Ahmad Adedoyin, a 400 Level student of Industrial Chemistry, lamented that the blueprint of Islam is fading from the hearts of its adherents and its long standing monument is falling into ruins, a situation he described as

a corollary of the sharp contrast between the path of the predecessors and the deviant path many have chosen to tread. In view of this, Adedoyin said that it has become incumbent on Muslim students “to proffer this humble service with hopes that it would be a moderate call that would be of immense benefit to the Ummah”, he said. The Amir appreciated the entire members of the Unilorin Muslim Community, the Central Executive Council members, and all members of the MSSN, who have worked tirelessly to make the programme a reality. Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of poems, launch of Al-Bayan magazine, presentation of gifts and awards to the winners of the Secondary School and Inter-Faculty Quiz Competitions, and Inter -Institution Oratory contest. Ekeh tasks NFF on spirit of sportsmanship By Sanni Muhammed Olaide

T

he Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been advised to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in order to move Nigeria Football and sports forward. The Chairman, University of Ilorin Sports Council, Prof Basil Ekeh, gave this advice penultimate Wednesday (June 1,2016) at the 2016 Vice-Chancellor's Sports Festival where students from the various Faculties and Academic Departments competed for laurels in Badminton, Tennis, Athletics, Taekwondo, Judo, Handball, Basketball, Scrabble, Chess, Ayo, Football, Volleyball and Table Tennis. Worried by the incessant infighting at the NFF headquarters, Prof. Ekeh urged football lovers to put Nigeria first. He noted that the 2016 edition of the Vice-Chancellor's Sports Festival was better organised than the previous ones, saying that this is a good indication that the University is preparing adequately for both the forthcoming West

African Universities Games (WAUG) and the Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA). Meanwhile, two Deputy ViceChancellors who graced the occasion counseled students on the need to embrace active sporty lifestyle even as they concentrate on their studies, noting that a healthy mind needs a healthy body to function optimally. While the Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic), Prof (Mrs.) Nike Ijaiya, encouraged students to be up and doing, concentrate on their studies and be law-abiding, her counterpart, the Deputy ViceChancellor (Management Services), P r o f Yu s u f A b d u l K a r e e m , appreciated the efforts of the organisers of the Sports Festival and urged the students to develop themselves intellectually, physically and mentally. Prof Ijaiya also expressed pleasant surprise at the turn out of students who came out in large numbers to support their Faculties. She further enjoined students to compete for laurels in coming editions

of the festival. In the football event, the Faculty of Engineering team, considered to be the underdogs before the games, defeated the Faculty of Education team in the finals to bag the coveted gold medal while the Faculty of Life Sciences team claimed 3rd spot after defeating the Faculty of Clinical Sciences team on penalties. Eloji Stephen from the Faculty of Education led all comers in 110metres men hurdles to become the fastest man on campus. Olamide Oladipo from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and Adesina Paul from the Faculty of Arts came second and third respectively. In the women’s 110metres hurdles, Osiagugor Babra, also from the Faculty of Education beat Otairu Mariam from the same Faculty and Ogbole Comfort from the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences to the second and third positions respectively.

Geo-Scientist tasks Geology students on integrity By Mubarak Oladosu

T

he President of Dextol Global Geo-Physicals, Mr. Adeolu Aderoju, has asserted that to start a private geology firm, technical know-how, experience and integrity are enough even when there is no start-up capital. Mr. Aderoju made the assertion in a chart with Unilorin Bulletin penultimate Thutsday (June 2, 2016) shortly after delivering a lecture at the Special Practical Session for students in the Department of Geology, University of Ilorin. The Geo-Scientist, whose lecture centred on “Detection of Subsurface Water Using Electrical and Electro-magnetic Methods”, noted that “a prospective entrepreneur must be undeterred in the face of challenges and keep abreast of the latest in the field by attending seminars.” The lecture was delivered under the auspices of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Nigerian

Association of Petroleum Geologists. Speaking at the event, the Ag. Head of the Department of Geology, University of Ilorin, Dr. O.A. Adekeye, said that the objective of the special lecture was to train and develop undergraduate students of the Department in the area of technology and professionalism by matching theory with practical experience, which will be relevant after graduation. This, according to him, is in addition to the six months Industrial Training program, which students of the Department are exposed to. Dr. Adekeye noted that “the training would provide useful knowledge on the search for underground water and oil and gas exploration. It will also provide significant knowledge that will motivate students who hope to have their independent firms and do well like many alumni of the Department are doing”. The don said, “We should think of how to stand alone. You will enjoy this profession better. Some of

our former students collaborate to start. They rent equipment to dig bore hole. Many have private companies with little beginning and they now have rigs. Those in Agriculture also need this knowledge. Water is life, they can plan their irrigation. Those in Engineering too need it so that the road that they construct can last.” Also speaking at the event, the Coordinator of the AAPG Visiting Geo-Scientist Programme, Prof. S. O. Akande, noted that following his recommendation to AAPG, some African Universities, including two Nigerian universities, had benefitted from the AAPG Visiting Geo-Scientist lecture beginning with the University of Port-Harcourt in December 2015 and the University of Calabar in January 2016. He said that “the University of Ilorin, being a University that never shuts down, is benefiting from the June edition to replace the University of Ibadan, which is currently shut down”.

Alhaji Ore, who made the promise last Tuesday (June 7, 2016) while answering questions on a weekly current affairs programme, 'Oro t'onlo' on Unilorin 89.3 FM, noted that the University of Ilorin has a good name in the country and beyond, hence his Union would be ready to collaborate with the university authority in alleviating the menace of long queues of students at both the Challenge terminus and the University park.

Pointing out that the University of Ilorin is known for discipline, stable academic calendar and quality education, the Union leader enjoined the heads of other tertiary institutions in the country to visit Unilorin in order to under-study the secret behind its stability so that they can emulate the good virtues. The unionist appealed to the Federal Government to rehabilitate all federal roads in the country to reduce accidents on the highways and ensure security of lives and property. He opined that 75 per cent of the accidents that occur on Nigerian roads are caused by bad roads. Stressing that despite the increase in fuel pump price by the Federal Government, the Union had not increased the transport fare in

Kwara state, Alhaji Ore enjoined the NURTW members in the state to continue to be law-abiding and have the fear of Allah in all their activities. The union leader gave kudos to the members of the NURTW, Unilorin Route Chapter for their God-fearing, maturity and good behavior before, during and after the just concluded union's election in the University. Saying that there was no victor no vanquished, Alhaji Ore advised the newly elected executive committee members of the union to avoid the “winner takes all syndrome, be focused and continue with the existing mutual understanding among the members.

A

"has very rich cultural platform and, our language is unique", the don urged Igbomina youths to be passionate about Igbomina culture. ANUPA scribe hails Unilorin chapter By Adeyinka Ademuyiwa

T

he National Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA), Mrs. A.A. Oguntunde, has disclosed that the University of Ilorin Chapter of the Association is one of the best. Mrs. Oguntunde stated this last Thursday (June 9, 2016) while conducting elections into various offices of the Executive Committee of the local Chapter of ANUPA at the Old Senate Chambers of the University where Dr. (Mrs.) Folaranmi Modupe Olowoleni emerged as the new Chairman. The National Secretary, who was the Returning Officer at the elections said, “Unilorin Chapter is vibrant and active. It is one of the best Chapters of this Association. You should appreciate the out-going Executives for building such a virile professional group”. “What you are doing today (the elections) is statutorily correct. We are, as usual, going to a very serious business and will apply all the rules”, she stressed, lamenting that although ANUPA is 32 years old, “we are not chartered yet. We are working at that and need active branches like Unilorin branch to support what we are doing at the national level”. Earlier, in a brief welcome address, The Registrar of the University of Ilorin Mr Emmanuel D. Obafemi, who was the Chairman of Unilorin ANUPA prior to last

Thursday’s elections, expressed joy over the achievements of his team. Mr. Obafemi said, “It is my pleasure to stand before you today, a happy man. At last we are conducting elections. ANUPA has come of age. The text messages that I received make me a happy man because people are active and participating in this election. Before, people don't come out. We hardly form quorum. But today, this place is full” “I also appreciate all those who worked with me. In our handing over notes to the new team, we will address all issues of financial reports. And I hope the new Executive Committee will carry on where we left off”, he further said, adding, “This University takes ANUPA very serious. Other Universities around us are taking ANUPA serious too. You should therefore take your Association very serious” At the end of the elections, where 11 positions were filled, Dr (Mrs) Folaranmi Modupe Olowoleni, the Deputy Registrar/Secretary, Postgraduate School, was elected Chairman unopposed, having secured all the 79 available votes. Mr. Adelodun Mohammed Ajao, a Faculty Officer, also secured 79 votes to become the Vice-Chairman after Mr. Olumide Olajugba withdrew. Also elected were Mr. Toyin A. Bamigboye, Secretary (unopposed, Mr. Alabi Oluwatoyin Atiku, Assistant Secretary

(unopposed); Mr. Imman Adeyemi Sanni, Treasurer, who got 61votes to defeat Mrs. Saudu Simbiat, who secured 17 votes; Mr Suleiman Aliyu Dagbo, Financial Secretary ( u n o p p o s e d ) ; M r. The new ANUPA officers later took the oath of office administered on them by Mr A.A. Owolabi, from the Legal Unit. In her acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Dr. Olowoleni, said, “Today I feel humbled for the reason that no one is competing with me. When people expressed support saying I will win unopposed, I replied let me canvass for votes, let me campaign and do the needful. I am happy as things turned out. “Let me assure you all that with the cooperation of the Registrar, Mr Dada Obafemi, the National Training Officer, Mrs. R.A. Okojie, we will do our best. But there is no ANUPA without you. Success comes with a price -- our time. Nothing moves without money. We need to get chartered. We will lobby at Abuja. I welcome your ideas. We already have some plans but we want to trade ideas with you. So come to meetings”, she said.

& How To Begin An Exercise Routine

One of the most effective ways to begin an exercise routine is to start slow and build up. For example, incorporating a ten-minute walk into your daily routine delivers a good start. After a few weeks, you can increase the amount of time you walk to fifteen minutes and continue to build up from there. In addition to a slow start, selecting activities you enjoy, such as gardening, can help you ease moderate physical activity into your schedule. Some examples include slow biking, team tennis, dancing or raking leaves.

Eye

June 13, 2016

By Prof.J.F.A.Owoeye

Dear esteemed readers, you are all welcome to the maiden edition of this column in the University bulletin. The purpose is to enlighten you on your eyes, how it works, disease states and what you should do to keep the eyes functioning optimally. In the interim, feature articles will appear fortnightly in this bulletin under the above heading and readers would be free to ask questions by sending text messages to the mobile number provided below.

T

The structure of the eye

he eye, the main organ of sight, is not a completely spherical structure (even though it's often referred to as the eyeball). It is about 22-24mm in diameter. The eye has a number of parts, some of which are listed below (and shown in the diagram): Cornea - a clear, transparent part of the eye Conjunctiva - a thin membrane covering the inner part of the eyelids, the front of the eye, other than the cornea. rays and help us focus light on the back of the eye. The lens loss of transparency by the cornea, and the cornea bend (refract) light lens or vitreous are major causes of

blindness. These would be addressed in subsequent issues of the bulletin. Retina - lines the inside of the eyes. It's like the film of a photo camera. The retina consists of light sensitive cells which convert light into electrical impulses. The image of a properly focused object should fall on the retina to give a sharp, clear vision. Within the retina is an extra-sensitive area called the macula. It is responsible for the eyes' sharp vision. Optic nerve - this is located behind the eyes. It carries the electrical impulses from the retina to the brain where the image on the retina is processed, thus making us actually "see" with our brain. The eye is delicately and wonderfully made. The loss of its function is a major cause of socio-economic dislocation all over the world, often as a result of ignorance on the symptoms of an eye disease, what to do and where to seek help. Wouldn't you rather keep a date with us on this column? Keep your eyes healthy and keep the questions coming. *Prof. Owoeye, a Consultant Ophthalmologist, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), can be reached on: +234-81-69969576 (SMS ONLY), or through email: owoeye.jfa@unilorin.edu.ng or foluowoeye@gmail.com

Of research breakthroughs and official lethargy Last Monday (June 6, 2016), your weekly companion, Unilorin Bulletin reported the scientific breakthrough by Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, whose research endeavour has led to the discovery of a substance that could be used to rescue the environment of the country's oil producing areas from the menace of oil spillage and save their waters from perennial pollution. This is another invention from the stable of the Better-by-far institution, the University of Ilorin. According to the report, the invention, which was patented in 2005, “has the property of selectively picking up oil and organics and leaving the water intact." If faithfully deployed by the Federal Government, it is also capable of conserving substantial amount of foreign exchange for the country, thereby contributing to the muchneeded reflation of the nation's wonky economy. This feat by the renowned Professor of Chemical Engineering and immediate past Vice-Chancellor of AlHikmah University, Ilorin, is highly commendable and deserves the support of all relevant government agencies to ensure its prompt adoption as a major equipment for cleaning up the oil-soaked environment of the country's Niger Delta Region. Indeed, in saner climes, where concern for the people's welfare and interest of the national economy are uppermost in the minds of the leaders, Prof. Abdulkareem's 11-year old invention would have, by now, become a major instrument in the government's avowed determination to make the heavily polluted environment of the oil producing states a little more conducive for flora and fauna. Although Prof. Abdulkareem's invention was duly recognized and acknowledged by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 2005 with the conferment of the nation's “Best Researcher of the Year's Award” on him, it is quite disheartening that no serious effort had been made by government since then, until recently, to adopt this great scientific breakthrough that is capable of helping to douse part of the political tensions in the South-south as a result of government's neglect of the region's environmental welfare. The report that the Muhammadu Buhari administration is showing some interest towards adopting the product for its oil-spill clean-up campaign is, however, heart-warming. Feelers from the Office of the Vice President indicated that after years of foot-dragging, the Federal Government might have started giving serious consideration to the use of the local oil spill management product. This renewed enthusiasm on the part of the government should be commended by all lovers of this country. For, it is an indication of the Buhari government's commitment to the local content mantra. And apart from

satisfying our local needs at reasonable cost, the product also has the potential of becoming a veritable foreign exchange earner for the country. There are already indications that some African countries like Ghana and Sudan have already shown interest in embracing the product for oil spill management in their respective countries. This is one research breakthrough that should not be allowed to gather dust on the dingy shelf of some unwilling MDA official. All efforts should be geared towards making its adoption a reality, especially at this moment when the Federal Government is showing a renewed commitment towards tackling oil spillage in the country through the use of local resources. Town & Gown congratulates Prof. AbdulKareem on this ground-breaking discovery, which is capable of not only solving one of the nagging environmental challenges facing the country's oil producing areas but also catapulting Nigeria into the league of net foreign exchange earners from non-oil products. We also congratulate the management of the University of Ilorin for providing the enabling environment for researchers to operate, flourish and come up with useful innovations. To be sure, the glory of this innovation is as much for the researcher as it is for the University! Adieu, 'Prof. Digital Alhaji' The death, in the early hours of last Monday (June 6, 2016), of Mr. Yekeen Olanrewaju Abioye, the Kwara State Correspondent of The Union newspaper came as a rude shock to many of his colleagues. Fondly called “Professor” by his friends, the late Mr. Abioye would not miss any opportunity to pontifically introduce himself at media assignments as “Digital Alhaji”. The demise of this affable and hardworking journalist, with whom I had worked at the old Herald newspaper in the 90's, is a personal loss to me. The tour of journalistic duties had also taken both of us to Lagos and Port Harcourt at one time or the other. He was one of the media bulwarks of the University of Ilorin since I left journalism for the ivory tower. So, his death at this point in time is particularly painful. While commiserating with the family and professional colleagues of the late Mr. Abioye on this sad loss, Town & Gown urges all to take solace in the fact that the deceased did his best for humanity through the Pen profession. May the Almighty Allah grant his soul a peaceful repose and may He give his wife, children, relations and friends the fortitude to bear the loss. Adieu, my Digital Alhaji!
