How Unilorin hopes to contribute to national dev. — Ambali Unilorin Bulletin recalls that the University had procured six units of ultra-modern milking machines in June last year to improve its dairy production activities and ensure hygienic production of milk. The machines, procured from Turkey, were distributed to the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture. The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that efforts were being intensified by the University authority to increase the herd size of cattle in its Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture to enable the community feel their impact. Prof. Ambali hinted further that the University had mandated all Faculties to “allow their various fields of studies reflect in the society by way of using the knowledge and skills acquired to have impact on the society within which we reside”. He said, "We have given all the academic Departments the directive to, as much as possible, identify areas where they can make positive impact on the community. We know what the Faculty of Agriculture can do to help farmers; the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine can reach out to Fulani herdsmen and through that we can solve the problem of encroachment." Prof. Ambali also pointed out that “it is expected of the Department of Religions to contribute to religious harmony and stability in Nigeria while the Faculty of Agriculture should leave no stone unturned in assisting government in formulating agricultural policies that will give Nigeria a window of opportunity to diversify her economy, using agriculture as a platform”. Speaking on the line-up of programmes of the University for 2016, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the Unilorin Renewable Energy Centre had been given a marching order towards ensuring that its research is geared towards addressing the energy problem within the campus and beyond. According to Prof. Ambali, the cardinal objective of the centre was not to focus only on providing solution to the energy problems within the campus but also to give the University's host communities the opportunity to enjoy relative stable power supply. He added that the centre has been empowered by the University to explore other ways to generate energy that will give birth to a more regular electricity supply to the campus and communities around the campus.

becomes fully operational this year, the center would contribute significantly to national development as efforts are being made by the centre to look for alternative ways to generate energy like wind, solar, hydro, instead of relying on gas and other existing sources of energy. Prof. Ambali disclosed that the University has now started enjoying a more stable power supply, saying that the report made available to him showed that the University campus recorded 90 per cent supply of electricity in October and November last year. He added that the University experienced just 22 hours of power outage in those two months. The Vice-Chancellor pledged that the University of Ilorin's success story in terms of power supply would be replicated in some of its adjoining communities. On the newly established Laboratory to Product (LABTOP) Centre, Prof. Ambali explained that the rationale behind its establishment was to come up with a ground plan of transforming various laboratory endeavours in the institution to meaningful products. He said that the centre is headed by a Professor, whose mandate is to go round all laboratories on campus and devise means through which these laboratory works could be converted to products that will be of great significance to the growth and development of the country. Answering questions on students' hostel accommodation that has become a matter of “survival of the fittest” as a result of the rapid increase in the number of new entrants, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the Federal Government had given the University financial backing to put up two additional hostel buildings, while various hostel projects, being executed by private developers, are at various stages of completion on the campus. Prof. Ambali disclosed that a private company, the Orange Group, based in Lagos, just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ilorin to build 5,000 bed-space hostel, adding that the project will commence by March this year and it is expected to be completed by September. The Vice-Chancellor stated that the University has given priority attention to entrepreneurial skills as this will empower students to be job creators after their graduation, pointing out that "tertiary education is meant to prepare students for rational thinking and good decision making".

The Vice-Chancellor maintained that when it

Our aim is to make life more bearable for students— SU President (Contd. from front page) The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the students' initiative was an evidence that “what we are teaching both within and outside the classrooms is working”, adding that the Students' Union Intervention Bus is a clear example of “how we can solve societal problem without raising dust.” Prof. Ambali also commended the transporter, saying that he has demonstrated that “the more endowed you are, the better for everybody around you”. The Vice-Chancellor, who recalled that Alhaji Olayiwola had earlier built a hostel on the campus, said that “the bus is an additional cap to the intervention you have made in tackling critical challenges facing our students.” Prof. Ambali assured the businessman that the University management would work out modalities on how to make the project viable so that he would not have any cause to regret his intervention. Earlier, the Sub-Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf, had appreciated the University Students' Union for “their foresight and visionary leadership”. Dr. Yusuf informed the Vice-Chancellor that apart from the 78-seater bus intervention scheme, “the students' leaders had gone a step further to contact some private entrepreneurs in Osun State for partnership in the

provision of transport facilities on campus”. The President of the Students' Union, Comrade Alao Idris, said that in its sustained bid to make life more bearable for the generality of the students of the University, the Students' Union Executive Council approached Alhaji Olayiwola, who had earlier been involved in solving the accommodation problem of the students. “So, given that he had provided hostel accommodation for a reasonable number of our students, we approached him and he promptly keyed-in into our proposal and the result is this 78-seater bus we have here today.” In his remarks, Alhaji Olayiwola, who is the Proprietor of El-Mubarak Hostel on the University campus, said that the first time he came to the campus with his daughter, who had just secured admission, he found out that there was accommodation problem, adding that right there and then he thought that he should do something about it by way of intervention. He said he was able to complete the hostel within four months, adding that it was in the course of building the hostel that the students' leaders discussed the possibility of partnering them in the area of transportation.

Unilorin plans new motor park to ease transportation problem By Tajudeen Babamale

I

n a bid to alleviate the lingering transportation problem facing the students of the University of Ilorin, the management of the institution has said that another Motor Park would soon be constructed close to the University Main Gate. Disclosing this last Tuesday (January 5, 2016) when he visited the site for the proposed Park, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), noted that the move was to address the problem faced by the majority of the students while coming for lectures early in the morning as well as while going back to their various homes after lectures in the evening. Taxi cabs and buses coming into the University campus from town would discharge their passengers at the new park from where the commuter buses would now ferry the passengers into the old Park inside the campus. Prof. Ambali pointed out that apart from solving the persistent transportation problem on the campus, the new Park would also reduce over-speeding and reckless driving by some of the commercial drivers plying the University road. The Vice-Chancellor said that he had been having sleepless nights since the day he was told that some students used to trek to the main gate from the school area during the rush hour. He, however, directed the Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of Works as well as the Students' Union leadership to work out the modalities on an acceptable transport fare and some other logistics that would ensure the success of the plan. When speaking with Unilorin Bulletin after the inspection of the new park, the Director of Works of the University of Ilorin, Engr. Mobolaji Sani, said that clearing of the project site would start immediately. In his own remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho, noted that the plan to get another motor park came up following a very serious transportation challenge that befell the students in the last couple of weeks.

The immediate past Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho (middle), explaining a point to the ViceChancellor and members of his entourage during the visit to the site of the proposed motor park last Tuesday Prof. Omotesho described the resort by some students to trekking from the school park to the main gate as a very serious matter that needed urgent attention. According to the Dean, with the construction of the new park near the Main Gate, the University buses would no longer be going to Tanke to convey students. He said the commercial vehicles would now be bringing the students from Tanke while the University buses will be conveying the students to the old park inside the campus. Prof. Omotesho also pointed out that the available school buses might not be enough for this purpose but disclosed that ten more buses (five Coaster buses and five Hiace buses) would soon be added to the existing fleet. On his part, the President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union, Comrade Alao Idris, appreciated the management of the institution for having a listening ear especially on the challenges facing the students. He expressed happiness at the cordial relationship existing between the students' leadership and the management of the University, especially when it comes to giving priority attention to matters that concern the welfare of the students. Other senior University officials that joined the ViceChancellor on the new park site tour included the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the representative of the Bursar, Mr. Munirudeen Dere; the Director of Physical Planning, Engr. A. Adesiyun; the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf; the Deputy Director of Corporate affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, and the representative of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the University, Mr. Raufu Aliu.

Be responsible

I

n his well-known book, “History of Education in Nigeria” (1974), the late Minister of Education, Prof. Babs Fafunwa, conceived education as “the aggregate of all the processes by which a child or a young adult develops the abilities, attitudes and other forms of behavior which are of positive value to the society in which he lives”. There are scores of definitions that construe education in a similar light. The purpose of education, on the other hand, has proved to be a dicey subject. Scholars, practitioners, statesmen and virtually every group disagree on the purpose of education. While Eleanor Roosevelt wrote of “Good Citizenship: The Purpose of Education” in 1930, Dr Martin Luther King Jr wrote in a campus publication, “The Maroon Tiger”, in 1947 that the function or purpose of education is two-fold “the one is utility and the other is culture. Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.” While reviewing how various people have addressed the purpose of education, I did not find a single one in which the purpose of education is said to be "meal ticket". Unfortunately, to many Nigerians, that is the only purpose of higher education. This is why a lot of emphasis is placed on employment, not productivity. The priority that the University of Ilorin accords skills and entrepreneurship, as evident in the interventions of our visionary ViceChancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), is to orientate all students in this regard. There is no doubt that employment opportunities are crucial to the attainment of the purpose of education, which Jonathan Cohen says is “to support children in developing the skills, the knowledge, and the dispositions that will allow them to be responsible, contributing members to their community. Meaning, to be a good friend, to be a good mate, to be able to work, and to contribute to the well-being of the community.” Cohen did not stop there. He added that all education should aim to equip children and learners with CIVIC SKILLS which include respecting others, working collaboratively, acting in a way that is fair and just and being an active participant in the life of the community. In other words, the purpose of education is to develop

character, which the University of Ilorin prioritises over learning. There is need for a paradigm shift from the mentality of seeking jobs as the purpose or goal of higher education in Nigeria. The complaint that education is irrelevant if it cannot serve as a meal ticket is misplaced. Part of the purpose of education, especially university education today, is to make graduates job creators, not job seekers. The value and import of education should not be reduced to providing one just a meal ticket, an insult to education. One does not need to have a university degree to eat but to add value. Both in Nigeria and elsewhere, there are millions of people who live (therefore eat) without a university degree. What Martin Luther King warned against in 1947 should not be allowed to fester. “If we are not careful, our colleges will produce a group of close-minded, unscientific, illogical propagandists, consumed with immoral acts,” he wrote. This borders on irresponsibility. Like Dr King Jr in the same article, “I often wonder whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically. Even the press, the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths…Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from fiction.” If you ask me, the purpose of education is to be RESPONSIBLE - to God, to oneself and to the society at large. Education is dead in whoever is not responsible. Education is not just ability to speak English, any fool can speak a language if he is adequately exposed to it, and there are well educated people in other parts of the world who do not speak the Queen's language. Education is applying knowledge and that application is responsibility. The advantage the University of Ilorin has is that it is a responsible institution - to its students, staff, hosting community, its proprietor and the nation. This is why since its establishment, it has been adding what Fafunwa referred to as “positive value” to humanity. As a New Year begins, it is auspicious to resolve not only to be educated but also be responsible. Be responsible.
